Final Fantasy XIV Classes: Early Details

So now that we know Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled to be on store shelves in the US and Europe on March 9, we shift our attention to the upcoming MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV.

We were recently alerted to the fact that the official FFXIV website has been updated with some critical information for all you online enthusiasts. The big question y'all always have is, "what class am I going to be?" Well, you will have the option of a Gladiator, Archer, Lancer, Pugilist, and Marauder and the site now boasts a few details on all these classes. The Gladiators and Archers are self-explanatory and if you're a fan of the franchise, you know exactly what a Lancer is (those heavily armored guys armed with long-reaching spears and poles). The Pugilists are basically melee attackers who come equipped with claws on their hands; they kinda remind us of Berzerkers in other RPGs. As for the Marauder, we know next to nothing just yet, but we figure some of you could hazard some intelligent guesses; right now, Square-Enix is calling it one of the "surprise classes" for the game. We still don't think we're seeing the full list, though, primarily because we're not seeing much in the way of magic-using classes. There always has to be a mage or two, right? I like my Human Mage in Dragon Age: Origins (just got the Arcane Warrior skill, woo-hoo!).

So of these classes, which would you be? Remember, when it comes to games like this, you're going to be stuck with your decision for quite a long time, so choose carefully...

I was expecting something bigger this morning regarding FFXIII. A release date, well... I sort of knew that already by looking at the TGS trailer. Regarding FFXIV, I can't wait to see the different classes for mages.

I have to go with Gladiator so far... of course I don't know if I'll have time or cash commitment for the game but it's fun to read about.

I would say archer, if their are lots of skills for that archer. If not I hope they have mages like in the first couple of FFs like red and black mages. If that happens, I so would choose a red mage.

(So, their are lots of ifs involved)

I was under the impression that in this game you can freely change class or did I misunderstand whatever the website was talking about

I'd say Pugilists would be the quick attackers, with high Spd. Med Atk. Low Def. With spells like Haste, Slow, Stop mabey some gravity spells?

Well, I'm pretty sure there is no actual "class system" perse, it's supposed to be dependent on what weapons you equip. If you equip a lance, you get lancer type abilities etc. Would be interesting for mages, if you equip a Fire rod or something you get fire related magics :D Sounds good to me.

Pugilists remind me of assassins from Shaiya. My class would be Lancer. Not that Ill be buying this game, then have to keep paying every month to play a game I already paid for. I'm sorry but to all you people who pay to play a game you already bought, I think you are suckers of the highest calibur. Or mabey youre the richest people on earth. Dunno, it's up to you how you spend your money though, take another chunk out of you monthly budget if ya want to. It really doesn't matter to me, it just shows that SE will only release exclusives for Sony that people have to keep paying money for.

Sorry this is off topic, but are you going to do a story about all of the modded 360 consoles that were banned this week? It would make my year cause it just happened to my ass of a roommate near the end of Dragon Age. HE......IS.....PISSED!!!!!!!

I would give this game a try if the game does not have subscription fees. Make the game like $20 bucks, or I ain't trying it.

So as someone new to this franchise (deep breaths and relax people), from checking out this game online from the link above, is this representative of what to expect from the game being released in March? I know the online game is number xiv and the one in March is xiii but will there be similarities? I'm real interested in trying the game in March and can't see myself paying a monthly sub for the online one. I'm just trying to build a picture in my mind of what to expect next year.

they will be similar because they are called final fantasy, but i think that is where that will end. almost every final fantasy is almost a new IP.

xiii will be centered around the story and is single player.

xiv is a mmo. basically it is World of warcraft in a final fantasy world.

i would say try xiii as it will be its own game and its own experience but xiv will probably not be for you as it will take a lot of time, attention and money.

The Agency supposedly comes out next year at some point. DC Universe Online should be out in a month or two at the least. I haven't found hardly anything on MARS so far.

im really intrigued about the agency and DC universe since im a massive DC comic fan.
mars while interesting im not really excited for, but sony needs to learn how to control their announcements.
enough of this announce a game than have nothing to say for 3 more years its getting annoying.
50 bucks says we wont hear a peep about agent till E3 2013

Thank goodness you didn't go into great detail over what a Gladiator is. Everyone knows it's a guy who fights to the death in an arena. Which by the way has got to be the worst class eeeeever!
