Square-Enix Not Ruling Out FFXIII DLC For Western Regions

So now that we know Final Fantasy XIII is less than four months away, Western RPG aficionados have circled that March 9 date on their calendars. They're probably seeking more info, too, which is where we come in.

Downloadable content has become a staple in this generation; past RPGs like Fallout 3 have benefited greatly from significantly large digital expansions. However, according to CVG, producer Yoshinori Kitase says the team isn't planning to release any DLC for FFXIII...well, in Japan, anyway. The interesting part about his comment is that, due to Square-Enix's thirst for learning more about Western tastes in an effort to appeal to a wider audience, they're clearly not ruling out DLC for Western territories. Said Kitase:

"Unfortunately, it has been decided that no DL contents will be available for the Japanese version due out in December, while no decision has been made for the overseas versions."

When asked if he feels any pressure to add DLC to FFXIII, simply because everyone else has jumped on the downloadable bandwagon, Kitase followed up with this:

"I do not feel any pressure. We intend to ensure that Final Fantasy titles we produce will be highly appreciated worldwide. Hence we always expose ourselves to inspirations from western products in attempts to digest and apply them for Final Fantasy."

It almost seems as if Square-Enix is approaching the Western release of FFXIII as an experiment. They may bide their time and see if the fans demand additional content, or if they're happy with the game as is; this is more a matter of "feeling us out," you know? That's how I'm interpreting these statements, anyway.

I wonder how long they'll take to develop it if it is a route they indeed want to go. I'm still debating this title.

The first FFXIII biting the dust? You think Versus and Agito will follow? lol

You just don't like the characters, I still think it will be mesmerizing. If it isn't I'll send you a video of me eating my hat.

I think we should get exclusice dlc for brand loyalty, FF7 started on playstation and it should have stayed here, I dont care how awesome it is because IF I buy it I'll play it knowing it would've been better exclusive, we all know theres things that the xbox just cant do.

I don't know why im thinking about this, but why do you think previous ps1 FF's games don't let you visit towns and places as soon as switching to the last cd? well, I know everybody knows that's due to the ending cg movies in the endings. Those take lots of space and thus the devs. have to give up something. FFX, X-2, and XII were different, they came in one cd only. Hence, gamers could visit any place at any point during the stories unlike previous FF's. My main concern is that SE is trying to deliver the exact same game on both the PS3 and XBOX 360. Obviously, the 360 will come out in more than 2 cd's and Im afraid this will cause a backlash and greatly affect the PS3 version. Sorry for deviating the purpose of this blog. I just wanted to share this.

I can't imagine what kind of DLC will they make. It's not like a shooters game where you can constantly keep adding maps to extend replayability. At most it'll probably be different clothes and weapons.

It would probably be some sort of new weapons, or "Weapons" if you will.

As this is the first game I've ever preordered I hope they give something neat to the preorderers too. Maybe a stylin outfit for that Vanilla milkshake girl or Squall's gunblade for Lightning :)

Squeeeeenix: We had to cut out content for the American version since it's also releasing on the 360 and we want both versions to be equal.

So here, this is the extra content we couldn't fit in those DVDs

LOL...Is S-E becoming retarded?! I'm starting to think they are doing these things just for shock factor. Why else would you:

-Say, "We want to appeal to Western audiences more."
-See the Western RPG developers plan strong DLC schedules for their games
-Then say, "They have no plans for DLC."

Look, S-E just give me my game and I'll be happy. And what would make me even happier is if S-E drops FF13 and puts all efforts into the other FF titles. Like uh..IDK...Versus...Agito...FF14...*sighs*

Just make SOME damn progress on Versus is all I ask, those other ones I don't care about. Make the PS3 exclusive with all available efforts and stop putting out crap on the side for once! With the Versus team free to get to work instead of being pulled off their game to make a worthless port they should get movin' there hasn't been a peep about Versus in ages except that someone saw a gameplay video that wasn't even actual gameplay.

Oww c'mon Square-Enix. Final Fantasy never needed DLC.

They've been making full game experiences for years and the 1st time it comes to Xbox 360 there's a 'possiblity'?

Oh the irony. I guess it's not all bad.

Square Enix wants to give Microsoft an exclusive game if there weren't so many loyal Sony fans. I doubt Microsoft's check book will expire anytime soon to give Sony any exclusive item.

The whole point of exclusive item is to steal sales from Sony version of FFXIII. It's not like pokemon where they want you to buy both PS3 and Xbox versions so you can trade items. I doubt there are anything for PS3.

well thats kinda a massive screw you to their fans in JP if we get extra content and they dont.
but theres so many things they could do for DLC, with shooters its normally just new maps for MP but RPGs open up a massive world of possibilities like what borderlands or fallout 3 did.
i only wish shooters would go down that route, i would love a new SP level for KZ2 or uncharted 2.

OK ____ can you tell me how they would add a level onto SP in games like UC2 and KZ2? Once you beat the game in SP you get to the end. Are you suggesting they add dlc and say "You thought that was the last level but then you gave us $9.99 and then this happened!" lol

Now I have always thought that eventually when games get more advanced this gen, we'll get to the point where instead of sequels to a game they start adding dlc in stuff until they can't anymore. (Not to be confused with lazy dev's who half heartedly make a game then charge more for stuff that should've already been in there. I'm looking at you Capcom for that RE5 BS.)

easy you could make it a prequel, do what PoP did with their epilogue.
or you could use a different character maybe use chloe for uncharted 2 or even flyn.
show the part where they find the ships.
same thing for KZ2, they could have a mission leading up to the first drop.
or right at the end, where the game finishes, have a massive fight out there.

DLC? DLC? DLC??!?!?!?!!?
Since when the heck does a FF game needs DLC?

What kind of JRPG needs DLC?
Extra costume? Extra Dungeon? Extra weapon? Extraa Character? Extra Story?

Don't tell me this is gonna be the next Borderland, where the DLC is announced even when the game isn't out yet.

Ok, looking at my comment I realized I was a bit over the line.
But FF needing DLC?
Seriously? This ain't FPS or RPG like Fallout 3.
I don't see any other JRPG having any DLC.

And even if there's DLC for international version instead of Japan version, is this a way to treat the roots of the popularity of FF?
