PS3 Firmware Update Delivers More Social Services

The rumor has been confirmed: Facebook and Twitter will soon become a fixture of your PlayStation 3.

As announced at the PlayStation Blog, firmware update v3.10 incorporates Facebook; as soon as you log into your PSN account, you will have access to the social service through the XMB. Basically, you'll have the option for your machine "to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity." In turn, this opens the doors for game developers, who can also use this new feature to allow you to have your progress automatically posted on your Facebook page. We've already seen something like this with Uncharted 2's Twitter functionality. Twitter compatibility is also included in this new firmware update, by the way, and they've also revamped the Photo folder and modified the Friends List "based on feedback we received after update 3.00." Oh, and you can choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB, too. When Sony says "It Only Does Everything," it's clear they want the PS3 to be the primary home entertainment hub, so expect to see more updates like these. Expect to see firmware update 3.10 "some time soon."

Personally, I've never understood the appeal of these social networking services but Sony taking advantage of their immense popularity makes perfect sense.

Wiiplay's are pesky little creatures, and the only known way to get rid of them is by spraying Wiiodorant at their feet until they're feet are sticky.
Wiiplay's do not like sticky stuff.
Sticky stuff gets stuck to stuff that is not yet sticky. (Such as their feet)
Wiiodorant does not kill the Wiiplay's, it only prevents them from moving for a short period of time. They will eventually realize that Wiiodorant tastes a lot like candy, and they will chew through the Wiiodorant.
The taste is rumored to taste excellent at first like Diet Coke, but it then has a funny aftertaste again like Diet Coke.
Wiiplay's are about the size of a 12 year old kid, and they carry Wii Nunchuks everywhere they go. Not as dangerous as the Boom-64-Rang they used to carry in the 1990's, but it is still very bad.
Do not be fooled into their cute and cuddly eyes, that is how they control your mind.
They make you suffer a fate worse than death; Playing every single mini game on the Wii.
They may be small and cute, but they are!

I love how sony is always coming out with new updates, they're always greatly improving the PS3!

The facebook thing sounds fu**ing sweet but i hope it's veryvery customizable, I sortof want my friends on facebook to know how im doing in my games but at the same time i dont want to be spamming my friends' news feeds

This is terrific news! I can't wait to check it out. Facebook and Twitter aren't "stalker sites" if you use them for friends and family like it's supposed to be used for.

This update is a great addition to what the PS3 can already do, hope we get the update asap so I can check out all the other changes as well. Keep it up Sony!

If your having trouble syncing your trophies, try doing it by comparing trophies with someone, it worked for me.

Why are you getting errors? Did you reformat your drive or something? I only saw "errors" when I was re-adding my files to my repaired system. Once you get past that, it's all golden.

fix the trophy sync, you're not shittin'. i don't get error messages just the % bar ALWAYS stops at 59% and just sits there for about 3 min then shoots up to 100%. why is this? when i used to own a xbox the achievments didn't do anything like this, they never had to be synced, what does MS do differently than sony?

Its a server load issue. If you just keep trying it will sync. I've had to attempt 2 times in a row since release of MW2 for it to work for me.

@Mysterio:

Some things MS just does better and some things Sony does better. Its a pain for some to have to "manually sync" trophies, but you get used to it.

Honestly I prefer not having it automatic. When I'm racing a friend to a platinum trophy, it's nice to hide my progress - this way they think I'm further away than reality. :)

I actually believe it has something to do with Modern Warfare 2. They screwed up the trophies in their game and had to quickly release a patch. Ever since I started playing MW2 I have only successfully synced once. What a pain... maybe they'll fix it when they give us the new firmware.

Since the Facebook thing is simply allowing the PS3 to update your Facebook account with new trophies as you get them, why is twitter so difficult to understand? All they're doing is generating s simple newsfeed based on your trophy acquisition, if you can do it for Facebook, you can do it for Twitter. After Naughty Dog (a FIRST PARTY) studio implemented something similar in-game with Uncharted 2, it was perhaps merely a matter of time...Naughty Dog always has a good handle on upcoming firmware features.

what happened to the hype of the dynamic themes ?? I find that more appealing than something I can always do in a more comfortable way on my lap .

I would get more excited if they put in the store the dynamic theme of Demon's Souls than any of this worthless crap.

i'm glad they're fixing the friends list design. it was an eyesore the first time i saw it. but i might end up missing it since it grew on me. i know i'll be taking advantage of the new the photo assortment option and the ability to change the colors. it could be even cooler to let us choose different designs 4 it too.

on a side note, i have a feeling that a lot of developers aren't going to use the ability to post game-specific content on facebook. it seems that if developers are given options, they usually choose not to use them. so far, i've yet to see them add new avatars. I'M STILL WAITING ON THAT!!!!

i PRAY that they don't add cross game chat. its bad enough that noisy kids are starting to infect psn; the last thing i want is one of my friends' annoying friends joining my party (YES, you can set it to invite only, but sometimes the people your friends invite BECOME nuisances and they might want them to stay) >:P

I actually like what MW2 did in the 360 version. You can have cross game chat until you try to join a ranked match. Then you are force to use the in-game chat. Sony could do something like that. I hate seeing my friends online and not being able to chat with them until they're in the game. We should be able to talk while using the XMB.

less worry about online functionality and more worry about the XMB please.
theres so many things they could add features wise to the XMB to make my life much easier, like a COPY ALL function.
i seriously can not believe its not there, if i want to copy my save files i have to select them one by one.
why cant i just go COPY ALL?
there getting sidetracked on this crap, less worry about online features who 99% of people wont use and more about things that come inline with our games.
the ps3 is a gaming console after all is it not?
i think sony has forgotten that.
i did not spend 1K on release for my ps3 so i can use facebook on it thats what my pc is for.
i spent 1K on release for my ps3 so i can buy games.

Well Jawknee there are some telltale signs I've seen that point to cross game chat in the near future (the option on MW2 being the most recent) They might finally come with that. Another thing I really look forward to on Sony's updates is all the things you find in them that they DONT tell you about. Its like finding easter eggs back in the day for me. LOL

i cant wait to till they integrate Netflix. I have been using it all week and so far its great. i dont mind running the disc but a Netflix icon in the XMB would be nice.

As for the voice chat, i dont care too much for it. Its a great addition for those who use it though and it will finally shut the Xbots up about cross game voice chat.

Seriously, i cant really think of anything else besides the Netflix integration that Sony can do to make the PS3 better. Its a fantastic system as is. But like you said, hopefully Sony has some surprises up their sleeve.

I used to same the same thing about facebook B Dukat, then I joined and, for the most part, has been pretty cool. I've re-connected with several people who would have otherwise been lost to me. In the end, these sites are only good as the people in your friend's list. The PS3 integration could be save some wear and tear on the laptop.

The PR for Netflix said they are working closely with Sony to integrate the service into the firmware and should be releasing in the early part of next year. But, in the meantime it is not all the bad to just pop the disc in and watch your instant queue that way. I mean if you are watching your movies then there is no real reason to have a game sitting in the drive anyway right?

Whilst this is a good thing to some; I still feel Sony should be looking at getting "universal" access to the main areas that would make PSN really good... like movie downloads, music video service, Netflix etc... At the moment my system is hobbled here in Singapore... can't do much with it other than play games. I am locked out of all the international services :)

The update that came with TEKKEN 6, Was it 3.3 or something? Ruined my FIFA 10!! The Blu-ray has no stratches whatsoever but freezes everytime i play with a buddy. Uncharted 1 and 2 are exceptable, as they only freeze @ one portion of the game.

Are you sure? As I also have Fifa 10 and Tekken 6 but I haven't gone back to Fifa in a while. My bro has been playing the Fifa offline though I don't think he's had any problems.

Most of my friends on Facebook doesn`t have any intrest in games. So I will have to turn of this Trophy update on Face.

It would be cool if Sony could implement Trophy update in PSN, and let my friends there see it.

Yeah, quite sure. My buddy and i rebooted the system 5 times! Only when you play multiplayer. . . Reset to default hey? What do i lose? Don't think uncharted freezing is also from the firmware update, as it is always @ the same place, and only hapPens 1ce

They should really give you the ability to delete some of this rubbish off the XMB. It's bad enough having the PSN store popping up all over the place, but now I'll have Facebook and freakin' Twitter to click through every time I want to do something.

This is such a waste of what they can do with it. If people are that sad that they need to go on Facebook and Twitter on the PS3, we have a browser...we don't need it on the XMB.

ANYWAY, little off topic...Ben, I recently made a new account with my current email address, but it won't let me sign in because it says it hasn't been verified yet...but I havn't recieved the verification email. I've quadruple checked my boxes, but nothing. And it won't let me create a new one with the same email address. Wondering if you could help at all?

If it's anything like the Facebook app on the 360, it's nothing special. The 360 version can't play movies or anything like that which is a bummer. Sure, it's neat and all to do a quick check up but I really don't see myself spending much time with it. If I want to fart around with Facebook, I'll stick with a PC.

That makes no sense whatsoever. If you want to play online, you'll download the firmware update. That's more or less the only alternative for you.

Besides, of course it's optional, you have to configure your Facebook account, and Sony isn't going to make it mandatory that you hand over third party account details to your PS3.

I find it a bit odd that so many people complain about features that they are adding to the PS3. If you don't like the feature don't use it, if you do like the feature use it. It's like the people who went crazy because the store icon was in three separate places. Is it really that big of a deal to just not worry about something?

If you are not going to use the Facebook integration then what does it matter if it is there in the first place? Just don't put in your information, and in the matter it is certain that this will be an optional service to use since not everyone PS3 owner in the world is also on Facebook.

Just stop all the incessant whining about added feature that you don't want to use and just don't use them.
