Demon's Souls Could Sell A Quarter Million This Year

We always enjoy seeing excellent titles sell well but sometimes, developers aren't appropriately rewarded for their efforts.

Some were concerned Atlus and From Software simply weren't receiving the recognition they deserve, that the stellar Demon's Souls would flop at retail due to its niche hardcore RPG appeal. But the game has scored so well and become so beloved by that admittedly niche crowd, that EEDAR is now predicting one of the year's best could sell around 250,000 copies before the year is out. This according to PS3Center; it has been reported that Demon's Souls managed to sell 150,000 copies in October alone, which - perhaps surprisingly - means it outsold the likes of multiplatform titles like Brutal Legend and Borderlands. EEDAR's Jesse Divnich makes the quarter-million 2009 prediction and says the title is "a tremendous accomplishment." This bodes well for the fans who are calling for a sequel, and we remind you of game director's Hidetaka Miyazaki's comment where he says he would "welcome the chance" to make an even better game if he had the opportunity. And what RPG fan wouldn't desire this?

It's just another example of the gamers stepping up and allowing a great developer like From Software to reap the rewards of producing one of the generation's best.

I've enjoyed it thus far. It brings back an old school sense of 'hard' yet not impossible levels that despite frustration, do give a nice sense of enjoyment/reward when you get past them.

this is the best JRPG on PS3 this gen, it will take the crown until FF13 comes out, even then, its unique feeling and game play and originality can not be replaced.

I don't like Final Fantasy but I know allot of people do, but you cant really compare a turnbased RPG to and Action RPG even though Demon Soul's is really deep, they are not the same kind of game's.

absolutely, everything about it is great except the fact that after hours of getting nowhere you literally want to hang yourself.

Yeah Demon's souls isn't THAT hard. It makes you try, but you definitely don't have to hang yourself to beat it. It's called "trying". I think I need to start reciting "The little engine that could" to some people around here.

250,000 for the rest of this year? That's it? It deserves to have Uncharted 2's numbers. Difference is, one game is finished in one sitting, the other isn't. 250,000 is way too low for a game this good.

gamers of this days don't want challenges Byakko .

a shame because the game its excellent but I still got impressed with the sales I think it would sell less than that .

I found that if a level seemed 'hard' I was doing it wrong.
Mantas shooting you? Put on thief's ring.
Red Dragon an issue? kill it from the first tower.
Getting pissed with 1-2? go to 2-1.
Too many people mobbing? snipe some off first.
Not to say the game was easy, it wasn't, but I think 'hardest game ever' reviews were vastly overstated.

I am thrilled to see sells were so high, well deserved.

Yeah I've been coddled by modern gaming in my old age, and I like a challenge, but it just wasn't doable. I understand and give them props for wanting to create a big sense of accomplishment, but there is a reason some titles are niche and I prefer a game to start off reasonable and get harder as you go along, not t'other way round.

@World Ends

I believe you missed out big this time cuz I remembered you said sold it out on ebay or sth.

For me, I spent first 5 hours to just go through the first level, and I was actually worse off by playing it cuz I lost all souls, and broke my sword and did not repair it and did not have souls to repair it. it was really frustrating. and then i re-start new again and with the learned experience, i made some progress by beating the first boss, then the 5 worlds opened up and you can freely choose to go anywhere;

And then, I spend two whole days to just try to beat the Tower Knight boss, and died like 30+ times, this was really really frustrating. and i almost decided to give up just like you did, but then i went online and looked up on youtube to see how others beat it. then i managed to beat it, and it gave me the feeling of satisfaction like no other.

ever since that, i leveled up, and progressed well, and now i am at soul level 60 and at Level 5-2 and I believe I did not die many times since the second boss and I think I am close to beat the game.

so in short, i believe the game is hardest and most frustrating for the first two levels. after that, you are used to the system and learned from your failure, and the game became the most addictive one in recent memories.

such is from my own experience, hope it is not too late for you to pick it up again.

I haven't read much on it, I'm dying for an RPG, but from the trailer reviews, it feels like a Western RPG MMO. I play the games for the story. I've heard that if you can get through the first couple hours, you'll love it. I hesitated a bit after hearing that.

Let's clarify one thing. Demon's Souls sold about 150k during the entire month of October. Borderlands was released on October 20 and sold more than DS but did not sell over 150k of the PS3 version. Not sure why they bothered with that comparison.

And how is it that DS can sell 150k in October alone but predictions are only 250k for the year?

I'm a few levels away from the platinum. :)

Without a doubt, the most rewarding game I've played... and also probably one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

I'm thrilled to see this is doing so well. It's well deserved.

Few levels? I take it you maxed out the weapons, did all the world events, and made all the unique weapons? Platinum takes about 80 hours in this game without getting help with the farming. I've platinumed both the Asian and NA versions. The Asian I got help getting the pure bladestone and used the soul glitch. The NA version I got without the help from any Blue Phantoms for items or boss battles, save the NG+ Flamelurker, (until I finally realized he is weak to magic and the purple flame shield almost renders him lame) and did it by myself in 87 hours.

I need two more miracles and the blade stone trophy.

I have to admit, I did have help with a few of the items. Without the help and my low luck... it probably would have taken me a really, really, really long time.

Good to hear. Hopefully this holiday season, they make that number and even exceed it. I'm still trying to find a copy. I'd like this game for December.

finally finished it and feel like i'm coming back from a war. that is, i can resume domestic affairs. for those that found the game too hard, use the co-op mode in soul form. you will figure out the levels and bosses this way, while earning souls to level up. When you are ready for the boss on your own, get into human form and step on two blue gylphs. good luck and godspeed!

But I can't believe Destructoid didn't give a proper review score for this. Because the game was too hard for the reviewer and he didn't want to finish it. The readers there praised him too =[

I'm happy for Demon's Souls!
