PS3 Enjoys Another Strong Month

PlayStation 3 sales spiked big time in September due to the long-awaited $100 price drop and the introduction of the new Slim model. But the question was, could it maintain that momentum through October and beyond?

Initial estimates from GameStop said the system had indeed had another great month (due in large part to the tremendous Uncharted 2: Among Thieves) and now, the report is that PS3 sales were up 70% in North America last month. According to MCVUK, the PS3 saw that 70% increase in a year-over-year comparison and on top of which, there were more downloads from the PSN than in any other month of the PS3's existence. To date, there have been 650 million content downloads and a total registered user number of 31 million. Said EEDAR's Jesse Divnich:

"Many believe a console race is a 100-meter dash, but it’s really a marathon. PS3’s growth in recent months is a perfect example of how a new low price along with upcoming innovative, exclusive titles such as MAG, Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III, will act as large catalysts for driving the PS3’s install base even higher. Add in the robust offerings on the PlayStation Network and there’s no doubt that PS3’s success will continue well throughout 2010, and beyond."

The holidays are here and it's time for consumers to start spending on gifts. And with the PlayStation 3 in such an enviable position, we'd like to think Sony will continue this push to the top, especially with all that exclusive software on the horizon. God of War III heads our most anticipated list; that's for damn sure.

I wish I could play the GoW3 demo I keep getting an error when I try to install it. I remember 6 months ago when everyone (myself included) was like "Sony what are you doing!" but they had a business plan and it seems to be working, with that said nowadays I think you'd be hard pressed to find a console in a more envious position.

I agree with you but they need to keep aggressive with their marketing. The new PS3 ads are fabulous and not at all creepy. They deliver you the whole idea in a couple of seconds while also delivering a good sense of humor. Marketing can do wonders!!

Looking good Sony. Just don't let it go to your head. Keep the modest attitude and keep the games and features coming.

Though, more gaming related features in firmware updates is more desired than the likes of news tickers and Facebook/Twitter integration.

Good to see they've got the momentum and fuel (2010 Q1 exclusives) to keep going into next year. Though there's not much known about the 2nd half of 2010 I'm sure E3 will amaze us like it did this past year and thus keep the Sony train going.

I think sony would keep this going at least till april. Somehow it feels like sony planned this out, lower the ps3 price and at the same time big exclusives are coming out month after month. Given that sony is mostly after the long term gains, this must be what they were planning when they kept postponing/denying the price cut.

FaceBook! Twitter! Firefox! Safari! Whatever!! Let them load the PS3 with everything it can handle! Imagine a fully featured music player! Equalizer.. Everything! Same with the Video player! Total communications solution.. Cross game chat.. Maybe even a picture in picture video in game chat setup! It can and probably will happen! A better browser! Netflix on the XMB! Coming soon! As long as SONY makes the XMB customizable to the point where if you don't want or need a feature you can disable or uninstall it then all will be satisfied! It is not an impossible or even improbable task. Time will tell! New features implemented is all about BRAND recognition! Let our presence be known! Especially over the social networks! How many who know nothing ot the PS3 will become curious when they begin 2 see the PlayStation Network Logo splattered all over FaceBook or whatever other network that is used! Let the Love spread! PS3 is a tank! And as far as I see the other do not have amour piercing software or HARDWARE! There strength is in numbers! And our numbers are adding up!PlayStation can Dominate! The Generals just have to get the strategies right! Say what you will! This is WAR! And the opposition plays dirty! SONY knows this! The GIANT has AWAKENED!!!

Man, PS3 really is hitting stride. I like how this guy avoided "console war" and called it a "console race," that entertains me.

Look at 2010, there is almost nothing coming for the box (Unless someone finishes Alan Wake) and we've got GOWIII, GT5, WKC, Heavy Rain, all these add up to an xmas PS3 purchase for disenfranchised bots so the season and next year belong to Sony.

i love my PS3. its almost like a family member to me. proud owner of a 300 gig b/c 4 usb and memory card readers that i use quite often.

i actually run 2 stereo systems off my ps3. got to love that multi-channel output.

as far as i am concerned they can go back to giving us new firmware more often. i want more features on my ps3. i like that this is not the same machine that i bought and i get this stuff for free.

I would have liked to have seen EEDAR define what "PS3's continued success well throughout 2010 and beyond" in North America would look like.

Would a continued 70% year over year sales increase be expected? Would any amount of increase over last years sales be enough to be considered sucessful? Does it's successfulness depend upon consistantly outselling the 360? (something it has done the last two months) Or does it's success (that they have do doubt will continue) have nothing to do with sales at all and is simply referring to a steady stream of AAA software and PSN offerings?

I would guess that they are referring to sales because they talk about driving up the install base but without defining what would be a success there is no way to evaluate if it does.

It is good. I've had mine for almost 2 months and using a swiffer, it looks like it just came out of the box. Its extremely quiet in my super hot room. When i borrowed my friends ps3(fat), when my room gets to a unbearable temperature, the second fan turns on but the slim is still quiet. The only thing that bugs me is that it freezes sometimes and i gotta turn the ps3 on and off, but i think thats due to overheating.

Some of you may have remember some of my earlier posts about where I thought the PS3 would be; with this news adding to my previous assumptions that I think between June - September 2010 period, the PS3 versus XFlop race will be over.

One concern is Natal; you never know what M$ have up their sleeves; but I don't see it happening... I think the PS3 has very very strong momentum now... it cannot be stopped.

As was stated above; and again, I have stated this a few times too; Sony need to keep those FIRMWARE upgrades coming along; with nice features to make the PS3 the ultimate home system.

Everything should be available from the XMB, I shouldn't have to go to my desktop or laptop to get my media. I want the browser to be plumped out; and I want all regions to enjoy what PSN in total has to offer...

Sony is still a ways off and some... it is up to them... they have the next 12 months to go all out...

Let's see if they really are awake or not...

...and don't forget in the distance... the Wii HD looooooommmss!

I said it before & I'll say it again.... the Playstation brand is the real-deal triple threat.

The first Playstation wound up all alone at the top of the console's heap.

The Playstation 2 wound up all alone at the top of the console heap.

And by the time the Playstation 3 is done too, it WILL join it's older sibling's right up there up at the top of "Mount Everest" too.

The Playstation brand, will be the only true triple-threat 3-peat'er of the gaming world!
