We are a bit too old for that game. I do not run into work and yell "First"! My wife would really hate if I played that game in bed too... LOL

I have not done the upgrade and am glad. I always wait a day or two to see what issues pop up first.

yea i had no problems with assassin's creed 2 the first couple of nights i played... but after updating, the game froze on me twice last night... i blame the firmware bug but, it could just be a common one... we'll see how many times it freezes tonight :D...

also, fifty-seventh!!

Yeah I hope it doesn't happen.
How about we just don't play games until Sony releases a patch? That's what I'm doing.
I figure if I don't use the Blu-ray drive, it can't fail, right? (Please say right)

My friend has been having trouble connecting to the PlayStation Network since 3.10 arrived, could it also cause that problem?
Oh and Ben, very nice work maintaining this website. :) It's my favourite PlayStation website on the entire interweb! (Besides playstation.com)

Had the update since the night of it's release. Been playing Uncharted 2 and(yes yes)MW2 Spec Ops online since. No issues with my slim. Haven't updated my 60gb yet.

I know! Haha I never said the multiplayer wasn't addicting. I just said they rarely offer anything new. I was pleasently surprised at some of the new features in MW2. I take back some of my sckepticism. With that said, I'll be done in a week and back to my regular gaming.

Playing with a pal online has helped. A lot! We average about 12 to 15 stars a night. Little more then halfway done. We should be able to knock it out in a week.

Man, with EVERY firmware update there's a "FIRMWARE UPDATE X.XX BRICKED/BROKE MY PS3" thread. Come on, man. EVERY time? I'm not saying that none of them are legit, but the vast majority have to be user error.

For the record, I've got a launch 60GB. I've downloaded and installed every firmware update straight from the internet to my PS3, and I've never seen so much as a hiccup. Not meaning that I've never had problems with my PS3 (I can't launch BUZZ while I'm downloading the GoWIII demo, a couple random freeses, etc.), but never anything that seems like it was related to the firmware updates.

at what point do you suppose there is even an opportunity for user error? you tell it to download and it does its thing. installs... restarts and boom, it either worked perfectly or messed something up. update 2.40 bricked a LOT of consoles, including my original 60gb. after the install and restart, the wavy background showed up but nothing else appeared. there was nothing that could be done

its probably not user error. but the user can reinstall the update and that could pose a fix for the problem. it has for me many times. i made it through 2.40 but even i didnt i wouldnt blame it all on the update.

electronics come and go when they please, and the 60 GB models ran extremely hot. I think melting point was like 90 degrees on the ps3 and i know my 60gb was up there. the thing sounded like a 18 wheeler coming down the highway! i loved my 60gb model, but besides not having B/C my 80 gb is much more preffered! i dont care bout the memory card slots cus most my stuff is on an ext. HDD or flash drive, and my t.v. has memory card slots so...

point is anytime there is a little problem, its the updates fault. i bet if for some reason your ps3 didnt work tomorrow it'd be the updates fault! even if its something tiny as the game freezing, o forbid it! I may be lucky but i have never had a serious problem with any updates, i can handle it freezing on me a couple times, cus most games auto save every 5 sec. now days, and so what you have to turn it off, (i let it sit for a few) then turn it back on. and it sounds like 90% of the comments on here havnt had problems either.

Same thing here Troy, my launch PS3 still going strong and I have downloaded every update as soon as it was available. The only time I have ever had freezes of any sort, I was playing EA sports games!

i wont lie though it did freeze once right aftre the update but not to the extent in this article. and i wasnt able to look at my profile. kept saying error. but i was able to compare my trophies with a friend, and once i did that it fixed my problem lol so...

ayways no major complaints and if Sony is aware of it whats the big deal? it will be fixed soon!

in the entire time i have had my ps3 i have only had a few problems with it. 2 or 3 freezes with fallout 3 though i played that for a couple hundred hours. maybe one or 2 other games but nothing ever from a firmware update. my dual shock was being stupid for a while after that one but thats about it.

one time HOME did an update and i had to delete it and reinstall cuz it screwed up. it happens.

i need to go find something wooden to knock on.

my 60gb refurb that Sony replaced my original 60gb with due to the 2.40 update bricking is now experiencing this freezing. at least i backed everything up first this time. and its not it totally killed the system like 2.40. it still does everything just fine for me except for playing disc-based games. hopefully they issue a fix soon

you can reinstall the update. that ussually takes care of the problem. i reinstalled an update for KZ2 because that game would freeze in a certain spot. after i reinstalled it ran fine! there are things the user can do!

i have tried multiple things, but reinstalling the update is not an option. it says something like, "the system has the latest software and is up-to-date."
i even ran a full reset of the hdd hoping that it might do something, but no. because the problem is the firmware update, there is really nothing that can be done until sony issues a fix. the system now has 3.10 on it and thus thinks its up-to-date, and when i tried reloading 3.01 on it via flash drive, it says there is no applicable update data because its older.

firmware, i dont rememeber what update KZ2 was on at that time, but it wasnt long after launch. i remember specifically going to system settings and updating. i wish i knew the update but i dont. it could have been that myabe there was a new update at the time and i got this whole thing wrong but im just trying to offer some advice. IDK honestly anymore, but i can tell you for sure that it wasnt an update or patch for the game!

anyways i also had a PS3 die on me, 60 gb model. but since then my 80gb has posed no problems through and through!

EDIT: i just went to see for your sake if i could re-install this update and your right no can do... well on the bright side im sure Sony will have a fix for those who are having issues, in no time!

oh ok. i'm betting that it was a new update. i remember a few where there would be a required update like 2.80 or something, and then a day or two later a non-required one would come out as 2.81 for those people who had minor problems. it must have been something like that because its always told me that the system software is up-to-date when i try to redownload any updates.

no problems for me, but im still disappointed with the upgrade. Although im not all that into facebook, I was expecting its integration with the ps3 to be better than what 3.1 offered.
Sony needs to address our wants and stop bullshitting with meaningless upgrades.

I play online once in a blue moon. I'm a solo gamer for the most part so staying offline is O.K. with me until they rectify this issue. I avoid downloading updates in case of incidents like this.

You gotta have a couple games to play online, like a racer, a fighter, a shooter, or LBP. It's good on the wallet, too, especially when money is tight. You won't feel the need to run out and get a new game every time you finish an sp campaign.

No, I don't "gotta" have any online games. I feel that online play is crap because I get no story, which is crucial to "my" gameplay. All you multi-player aficionados can have your online and enjoy it, more power to you. But please refrain from telling those of us who prefer solo play that we are missing something, we're not. That's akin to telling us to get a root canal because we're missing something there.

Well, I have installed the latest firmware 3.10, but I have no Facebook icon on my XMB. I did get the BBC iPlayer icon though...

I have no freezing issues at the moment... using an original 60GB fat PS3!

Yea I had a couple of MW2 freezes, it usually happened when My Online stats were loading up and simultaneously I pressed the PS button to check friends online, messages etc, then bam! it froze. Its happened like 2 or 3 times so far.

Knock on wood, I've never had issues with my 60gig original. I had to buy a new controller once, because it kept on diconnecting (guess it was getting old). What I'm curious to know about those with problematic or bricked ps3's, besides the sku, are things like their download habits, gameplay habits, and the climate they live in.

yes your absolutely correct. Sony will work with you if you call them and the techs are pretty knowledgable, and even the worst person ive talked to worked me through my issue so...

updates are essential, and Sony didnt just do this update for facebook theres lots of little things to be fixed as well that you may now know about. updates are improvements even if there is little set backs. Sony will end up working this out though so there is no reason to complain. if this is an issue it will be resolved shortly.

its pretty subjective to say that an update bricked your system. Especially since its been a couple days now. if that were too happen like some people say 2.40 did, sometimes thats just life and not the update.

in my mind im sure there is something in an update that could possibly ruin a system. but for the most part updates are improvents and patches, and in no way would or should intentionally ruin a system.

i agree. i had to go through the whole 2.40 complete bricking of my system, but Sony was amazingly helpful. at first they said it would be $250 to fix because it was out of warranty. but after i found out that it was so wide-spread that Sony actually pulled the update, i called back and they said they would fix/replace it for free regardless of the warranty. that was pretty awesome. i sent in my bricked 60gb and they quickly sent a refurbed 60gb within a week, free shipping and all. compared to that, this is just a minor hiccup though. at least the system boots up properly.
anyway, from someone who has now had to deal with 2 issues stemming from firmware updates, i agree with you about people whining. its not like Sony caused these issues on purpose, and they have always been very helpful when i've run into these issues.
though it is a bit frustrating, i'm just gonna have to patiently wait it out

If you were smart you would purchase the extended warranty then you would have nothing to complain about and it costs less than a refurbished PS3 from Sony, so its worth it!

Sony is helpful. My friend for instance on his PS3 his blu-ray drive went out, it was out of warranty and some how they hooked him up withheavenly sword and he didnt even send his PS3 to them he just bought a slim. Some poeple wont have that luck but it helps to go over allthe problems with Sony, they are there to help!

I wish I had a PS3 to update!! Since my fatty 60gig launch died, I've had 2 more PS3's die at my hands. When mine died, my brother in-law sent his brand new PS3 80gig fatty.(he was in the Army so he thought he was gunna be able to use it but got denied) Took it right from the box, hooked it up and.... DOA yellowed on me same as my launch 60gig! Then to make that even more f'd up, my girlfriends kids dad brought his over his 60gig fatty and....dead.

Coincidence?............. Maybe!?
But f me.....3 of them!!!
No f'n way!

Now I sit waiting for another new slim to be delivered.
The fourth PS3 and thinking of having someone else hook it up cuz.........if it dies on me........I don't know, maybe I'll jump off the roof head first into a thumb tack!!!!!

It could have something to do with your power grid. How many circuits run in your apartment/home? Is your wiring old? grounds outlets?

I've spent a bit of time working on PCs on the side. Common issue is burnt PSU (power supply units) due to irregularities in the electrical fields, especially due to inconsistant power output & poor grounds. The easiest fix? A juicy surge protector that handles at least what your PS3 outputs for approx 20 minutes.

Ill download an update any day of the week. they do not bother me because they have no hidden agenda.

updates are not out to get us, they are put out by Sony to make our experience better. if you have a problem with the update reinstall it, call sony. dont just sit there and complain. there may not be alot sony can do for you on the phone but it may help u get past an error, which could potentially cause more problems.

if your skeptical of an update i dont know what to say to you because they are essential. and they are especially needed to play online.

I upgraded my 60GB model yesterday and played Uncharted 2 for about 4 hours and I haven't had a problem yet. Right now I'm watching the Killers live DVD and still no problems.

This is quite an incredible predicament many unfortunately face. I can't imagine how so many may have a bug with this firmware while others sail smoothly. The hardware & software is the same amongst us all, hence the results shouldn't be able to differ? Perhaps some may experience line packet corruption in some firmware upgrade issues.

I, for one, have always had games crash on me since I bought my PS3, especially GTAIV... That game seems like it was meant to. Regardless of firmware, it'll dump on me sometimes during startup and other times half hour or longer into gaming.

I work way too often to really sit there and play games, so for it to crash during those 8-20hrs/mo i do play games, it really kills. Especially for the price of this frickin system when I purchased the newer(older now? haha.. ughh) 80gb non slim unit for $400..

Who knows. I was so use to blaming M$ for my gaming crashes (was strictly a PC gamer prior to my PS3), but now am getting sick of pointing fingers in every frickin direction. Ugh..

My slim froze up once after I updated. It happened when I tried to launch GOW Collection from the recently played games menu in What's New. I've had no other problems and I did send in the bug report because I know it is helpful to Sony.

Have you noticed the God of War collection gives your blue Ray drive a workout? My slim makes a lot of noise when the blue Ray drive is doing it's thing. On some games more then others. You notice that Tes?

Haven't really noticed anything different with GOW collection. I've been playing with surround sound which may have been drowning out the sound of my drive. As far as I can tell it's doing fine, but if that changes I will let you know.

The sound is freaking great. I played the E3 demo for gow3 too for the first time. Lol that game is going to be epic.

Updated my b/c compatible 80GB. First couple times I tried to download the update it only got to about 3% before the connection timed out or something. Had never happened to me before but I figured the update had just gone live and a few million people were doing the same as me. Waited half an hour and tried again, downloaded and updated fine.

No glitches, lag or errors. If anything the XMB seemed a fraction more responsive. Haven't put in a game or blu-ray movie, but the Netflix disc works fine.

The only times my PS3 ever freezes is when I'm using the web browser. I love having it available but I feel it doesn't manage its memory allocation very well.

I also have the 80GB PS3, and It felt as though the update took forever to download.
Once the update completed, I noticed that there was a lot of lag on most games.
I tried playing COD4 online and it was virtually unplayable, as some of the characters appeared to literally skip from place to place.
And once I thought I had the guy cornered, he vanished and somehow reappeared behind me shooting me with bad silver things!
But it wasn't just COD4, it was every game!

But after an hour or two the lag was gone.

Has anyone else experienced this before?
(I can still connect, unlike my friend)

Again it might have been the mob of users trying to update at the same time and overwhelming certain servers. Sucks if that affected online games though. Glad it cleared up.

Another reason why firmware updates should not be mandatory to go online, can't sony do some prelaunch testing using all sku's?

But yeah, I agree. We should at least be able to access our friends list and chat if we don't want to install an update.
But wasn't there a few updates that were not mandatory?

I always wait a week before I update my 60gb, just to see what bugs I don't want. So untill its fixed or untill I see a ratio report I'm staying at 3.02 or 3.05 whatever I have now.
I have no need for FACEBOOK and JUNK.

Updated my 60 GB PS3 and UC2 locked up on my the first time ever today.
Also I cannot link/update my trophies -> Error(Somewirednumber).
What is FAR more annoying is the fact that the new video store has all the movies only dubbed to german! WTF?!! I want the OV not the cheap crap version of a million dollar movie!!

Assassin's Creed 2 froze on me last night, but my PS3 didn't give me the chance to report and I just figured it happened. I didn't link it to the firmware update. I am glad its not because it was overheating.

You know! I`ve been having my 60 gb PS3 since launch, and I have never had any serious problem with it. Yeah, maybe some freeze here and there, but nothing serious.

You can really tell that Sony gives their heart and soul into making GREAT products. Hence, the reason I love them <3

hahaha everyone said the same thing about 3.00 and 3.01. well, I downloaded 3.01 (hesitantly) and nothing strang ever happened. Just to be safe, I'll waite a while and see if they release a patch. But if they don't, I'll probably download 3.10.

I've got an update from Playstation Customer Service Rep. Mark. Mark pretty much just told me that, while they have been receiving a lot of calls recently from people with this problem, it is not the firmware update that caused it. He said that it is mostly older systems, and their blu-ray drives are simply failing due to life expectancy.
Alas, we are boned. no fix-it update will be made since its supposedly not the firmware that caused it. its just a little hard to believe that its pure coincidence for my drive to fail on its own immediately after this update, having shown no signs of it whatsoever before hand. and apparently i'm far from alone.
Oh well, i guess i will be without my ps3 for a long time. $150 bucks is hard to come by for a starving university student. ugh :(

The only game that froze on me since the update was "Uncharted 2" but my 40gb PS3 had froze couple of times on me before the update but I did get that report the problem thing popped up when the browser crashed on me.

I noticed that Viddler wasn't working as well as it used to work even before the latest update. Perhaps that's what you're experiencing. Or not.

I upgraded to FW 3.10.

Also viewed the new Star Trek move and played Assassins Creed II and have had no freezing issues.

I have the 80 GB (now upgraded to 320 GB) backwards compatible PS3 (Motorstorm issue PS3).

when i said this before, i just did it for sh*ts and giggles but this is completley embarrassing and PATHETIC!
seriously how can they get away with this?
if i was working for a company and constantly update after update was releasing gimped software i would be fired on the spot.
sony, for once can you release a firmware update so i dont have to worry about what part of my ps3 is going to stop working next?
once, just once thats all i ask.
and now ever since i updated to FW 3.10 my DS3 keeps un sync from the system, im constantly having to plug it in via USB and re sync it.
i mean once every blue moon ok thats fine, its software after all things go wrong i understand that.
BUT EVERY SINGLE FU**ING TIME!
can someone please hurry up and come out with some custom firmware so i dont have to worry about this?

I updated my dad's 40 GB for him the other night, but haven't played any disc games on it yet. He was playing flOw when I saw him this morning, but that's not on disc.

I didn't get the chance to update my launch system, as it's currently defunct.

Nope updated nicely, downloaded my Gow 3 demo and play'n ever since fine. I never worry about updates I have little people in my home to worry more about with it, man the finger prints from my 1 year old daughter is gross i clean the ps3 6 times a day due to little fingers.
