Car Reviews on PSXE? What Do You Think?

UPDATE: Just so we're clear, guys, I only intend to do this ONCE a week. This will not replace any of the work I do now, or have an affect on our daily operations at PSXE. -Arnold K.

Howdy, folks. Arnold here. Instead of doing a poll, which I felt is a bit informal. So I decided to poll you guys formally, by using the comments section below. As many of you may know, I'm a gearhead...and sometimes, you've probably seen this in my reviews of racing games, my automotive passion happens to get the best of me. For a long time I've wanted to put my thoughts on cars into writing, and lately I've noticed there's a number of you who also enjoy cars quite a bit, or at least, enjoy racing games. So I figured, why not write car reviews and post them as editorials?

What do you guys think? I have access to a lot of high-end vehicles, so having consistent content shouldn't be a problem. I'd also be able to take requests for reviews, as well, provided you guys don't ask me to review a Ferrari or Bugatti.  Sound off in the comments below.

Kind of a random subject matter for a Playstation site, but it wouldn't bother me seeing them on here from time to time.

If you throw some hot chicks in with it, I'm cool. Otherwise it's gonna be a big, testosterone- filled, sausage fest on here. You might as well throw in weightlifting supplement and fishing/ hunting reviews and we can all circle jerk together.

Sorry Arnold but that would be a little awkward.

People on this site can barely afford all the new games coming out how can we afford a brand new 370Z or my dream car a DeLorean, and possibly the new Camaro, of course.

I too am a gearhead and car enthusiast but I come here for games, and go to car sites for car stuff.

Don't ruin this site.

I'm not going to ruin it. But to counter your point, a lot of people who read car mags and sites can't afford 90% of the cars in them - they're just fun to read. These reviews would be once a week, at most, and I'd even find ways to tie them into videogames.

Are you two retarded??? He's isn't reviewing the high-end cars for you to go out and buy! He's a car fanatic and just wants you to read insightful reviews of bad-ass cars so you know more about them and how they drive. Pretty simple to understand that. Gees. I think we should clarify that the focus of the site certainly wouldn't change. This would just be a personal piece from Arnold that would pop up once every other week or something.

It'd be similar to personal editorials I've done in the past that got such a huge amount of attention. But games, of course, will always remain the primary focus. We're not going to start posting car news, for instance. :)

I have no problem with it, personally. As far as I can see it's your site (as in Ben, Arnold, John et al @PSX). But as you pointed out Ben, you have always had personal editorial pieces as well as specifically targeted editorials, so why not. On the other hand I do understand the sensitivity after all we don't really want PSX showing up in google searches made by petrol heads, it could lead to a misconception that PSX has changed focus.

Then again if you're even half as funny as Clarkson is, then I say get to reviewing...

For starters, I love this website. Now while I do not agree with everything written, this place provides me all that I want for my PS3 news, reviews, and speculations. I would go as far to say that I wouldn't mind seeing even more content (Yes, Ben and Arnold. I want more postings!!).

Which brings me to my point.

I would welcome car reviews without any second thoughts. Why? I love cars. Gran Turismo is my favorite game. Heck, take a look at my name, that will tell you where my loyalties lie. I still go to Joystiq/Autoblog from time to time to read up on gaming and cars.

PSXE became my PS3 home when PS3fanboy went away, so all your auto reviews would do is take another step in becoming my one stop website for gaming and cars.

I wouldn't mind a 'car of the week' article informing us of the pros/cons of a vehicle.

People have a choice within each article whether they want to read it or not, so if cars isn't their taste then they should just skip the article.

Gamer lifestyle site? So what's the big difference if they don't add that stuff here? Do you suffer from some psychological malaise forcing you to impulsively click on every article you don't want to hear about, read through it, and then continue to dwell on it, until everyone's life is as miserable as yours? And if it's a conscientious decision, do you actually think you will win any hearts or consideration by your tone? And if not, what the hell are you even doing here?

You have apoint Aftab, we all have a choice in what we read on this site. But you miss Gold's point.

The point is that this is a site dedicated to the single topic of video games. That is why we're all here. I'm sure we all make the decision every day which articles we choose to read and which we pass over. But, aside from the editorials, they are all well within the subject matter this site is dedicated to.

By adding in articles about cars, you're fundamentally changing the purpose of the site from the sharing of information and discussion on video games to the sharing of information and discussion of video game AND cars.

Once you begin to include other off-topic information you are fundamentally changing not only the content, but the functionality and the community of this site.

First of all, I don't appreciate the insults. I haven't done a personal editorial in probably a YEAR, and the ONLY editorials I've done since have always had gaming as a central focus. If you'd like me to point you to pieces from Roger Ebert that were his own opinion on various film topics, I'd be more than happy to do that. That's what EDITORIALS are. DON'T tell me how to do my job again.

Secondly, I don't think all of you are getting what we're asking. You're not going to see car articles mixed with gaming articles. We're talking about a few editorial pieces MAYBE a couple times a month. NOTHING else would change. Furthermore, are we all forgetting that a lot of video games use...um...CARS? Don't you think we'd make that tie-in every now and then?

All these, "no, I don't want a car site" responses are ludicrous. PLEASE understand the concept.

First off, I mean no disrespect Ben.

But, maybe I need a little clarification on the purpose of the car reviews. Arnold only said he'd like to write a weekly car review because of his personal interest. Nowhere in his post does he suggest he's going to write a video game related car review. If his reviews have a direct relation to video gaming then it is certainly appropriate content for a video game site.

But if they are just "car reviews", what place do they have on this site? And I truly mean that in a non-confrontational sort of way. How, in your mind, does the concept of car reviews fit into the scope of PSXE?

If you guys have aplan that makes sense I'll support it fully. And please understand all of us who are saying "no, I don't want a car site" are responding to Arnold's post as we understand it because he asked us to and truly have the best interests of PSXE in mind. If we misunderstand the purpose then please excuse us and clarify. Suggesting that I'm being ludicrous is personally offensive.

@ Ben and Arnold: It seems as if everyone here is only going nuts because you are calling them "car reviews". I bet they wouldn't bat an eye if you just did a few editorials a month on cars. As long as it is an editorial, no one seems to mind, unless they are just assholes. Really, your car reviews will technically be just THAT...editorials. Go for it.

Doosharm: Well, first of all, I was telling JohnnyGold not to insult me. I don't need people lecturing me on how to do my job.

And you have to remember, this isn't a newspaper. It's a website with a fully functional interactive community. It's a very different venue and because we choose to make it feel more like a family, we'd like to think we're capable of talking about different things every once in a great while. Nothing about the game focus will ever change and you won't be seeing less content because of Arnold's occasional car review.

But comments are huge for us. People contributing is huge. The games are here to stay but we'd like the human aspect of the entire endeavor to shine through.

Ben: I know you were aiming at Johnny, but since I agreed with some of his statements wanted to make it clear I wasn't also trying to offend.

But you're right, this isn't a newspaper that covers a wide variety of topics, its a website with a very specific topic:

"PSX Extreme is a video game website that covers Sony Playstation news 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

It is our mutual interest and enjoyment in all things PS related that brings us all together at this location. It is the basis of the family relationship you talk about.

It's not that I think your game coverage will suffer because of Arnold's car reviews, its just that the topic of cars is so completely unrelated to PS news that the only place it belongs on this website is the "off-topic" section of the forums or on an "About the author" page where you talk about what cars you like.

If you want to have a weekly editorial on cars in games, I'm all for it. If you want to compare a car in GT5 with its real life counterpart, do it. If you want to talk about which was the cooler car: Sweettooth or Spyhunter, go ahead. But if you want to just give a review of a real life car with little or no relation to video gaming it just doesn't fit into the scope of this site as you guys described it.

But Arnold asked for opinions so I gave mine. And the only reason I've been so vocal about it is because I don't understand the reasoning behind it but somehow it makes so much sense to other people, as if a feature about cars was the obvious next move for you guys.

But in the end I don't really care. I don't think it fits in but I'm not going to complain if its there. I don't get it, but whatever. The bottom line is I like this site, I like the writers, and I like the community. When the posts start rolling in I'll politely skip over them and not make a fuss.

I think that you can, and should, try your hand at car reviews. You're good at writing your articles, and say you have the resources to do this.

But...
(huh, huh, I wrote "But", huh, huh...)

Besides the point that this website seems best left to revolve around gaming, I've JUST taken on a new little 2010 "Bundle of Joy". Knowing how I feel about that car gets me thinking of this:

Cars can be a VERY personal thing. Games, sure, okay, but CARS, cars are like "the other woman". Their about: your method of transportation, racing for pinkslips, car shows, cruisin' at night, gettin' lucky, having a responsibilty.

What seems more "moving"? A girl in a bikini holding a copy of God Of War, or the same girl in front of a car (any car) that's been waxed, taken care of, and blaring a great song...(we're talking the car, not the girl).

Again, I think you should try it, but keep in mind the crap you might have to endure from people, as well as irate automaker publicists, if you give negative comments on their "Bundle of Joy"...

I'm going to be honest, that's not what people came here for, however id rather that then 360 articles *cough*TheSixthAxis.com *cough*.

I remembered when they said that adding 360 content wouldn't create a divide in their focus, user base, and feel of the site, but it did, and now they are nothing but a bunch of pretentious @ssh0les.

I think that if one would like to do car reviews then they should do it in the proper channels, not piggybacking off of the success of another community.

I do encourage much success and growth in writing car reviews and if you did put that content in the right places with your writing talents I know you will prosper well from it.

That's my honest opinion, its your site, but a site is nothing without users.

Hmm.. Interesting! I'm also a fellow gearhead. I think car reviews are OK.. What would you decide to do with these reviews? I wouldn't imagine you'll be posting any performance figures achieved first-hand, correct? I think a lot of what car reviews offer are massively redundant. There's a very fine line between a narrative car review and a enticingly exciting car review. I ran a car site waaaay back when I was young and bored. I used it as an excuse to script and brag about my html/dhtml skills that were strictly scripted through notepad.. haha.. I'd say be aware of what you're getting yourself involved into. It's easy to overlook the content.

Just some feedback!

But seriously, if you love cars you'd love this kind of editorial.

God I'd love to hear what a Viper in real life feels/drives like. I mean GT gives you a great feel, but that's going at 100+ mph most of the time. Would be cool to know what it's like INSIDE, outside, how the car takes corners in every day life, how it compares to other cars of its class, etc.

Anyway, It'd be awesome!

I've spent quite a bit of time working on fellow road racers cars and doing my share of it when the money bags swell with enough to spare for hobbies.. You'll be surprised! People are willing to let you at least hitch a ride with them! You don't need to have a car, but it helps to gain a respectful reputation with fellow racers or to show up with a car club if you have friends/family/relatives who are into racing.

if youve got a car that your stoked about or one that hits you the wrong way, i dont see why not. Just saying "i feel like reviewing this car" seems a bit, idk, a little unfocused for a videogame site.

i think itd be cool if you would do "Arnolds Weekly Car Review" alongside bens, and just choose two or three and tell us what you like, what you didnt like, and what we should stay away from, in brief. might be the best format to pursue.

Prolly right down the middle. I don't really read the "personal insight" articles with the dating stuff and all that. While I do like fast cars, not sure I would like them mixed up with my gaming news. Maybe a seperate "lifestyle" section with life thoughts about gaming and dating and car rreviews. As it is this is a gaming site.

But either way I don't think it's a big deal.

It's your site mate, I wouldn't mind something extra to read. Just have a clear label for the headline so those less interested can simply pass by.

However, if by "access to a lot of high-end vehicles" is code for you doing some kind of Gone in 60 Seconds carjacking exploits, I think this site should immediately shift focus to coverage of said exploits. That'd be sweet :)

while I have no interest in cars and find it a bit unussual to put on a site dedicated to playstation, I say go for it. I can always skip over those articles the same way I skip the ones that do concern video games but doesn't interest me. now maybe I would suggest keeping it seperate from the playstation articles, but it's your website man. However, after reading other's thoughts, I believe now this can be a great opportunity to learn about it. yes, to learn about cars!

So, please Arnold proceed with it.

While I feel you certainly have a right to write about whatever you wish here at PSXE, I don't feel that subject matter unrelated to games is appropriate.

I agree with JohnnyGold that you guys should give yourselves each a blog page within this site where you are free to discuss any subjects you wish. Clearly there is an existing audience for it (lots of positive replies here and lots of feedback to Ben's personal posts.) But I typically skip over such posts as they are very rarely related to why I come here. You could still write them, still make the accessible to the readers of this site, and still get feedback on them, al while keeping a nice gap between the actual content of this site and a blog. In that way those of us in the PSXE community who aren't gear heads won't have to worry about a sudden rush of new members who are only interested in the car articles. Its our love of games that bring us together here... I don't want people who don't give a crap about games getting mixed in and ruining that.

So, If you want to do it, I support you. I would just prefer if it was kept distinctly separate.

But another part of me wants to say, "Why oh why would you be writing about cars when there is so much more PS content to write about?" How about updates on the best stuff available on the PSN? I mean they update it every week with a ton of stuff that never gets mentioned here. Or what about guides written by you guys for certain games? Not like entire walk-throughs, but just let us know how you did it. I know that may help people with RPGs, like how did you build your team, etc. Or even do the same thing with Gran Turismo... "Here's how I customized X car for Y race and I get first place every time." Those are the kind of features I'd like to see come before general real-life car information.

But again, it's your site so you can do whatever you want. The only way I would get upset about it is if it changed the community for the worse. Which, I hope, you guys would notice and fix yourselves before it ever became a problem anyway.

I agree that it's your site, so you should do whatever you want, but since you asked for input...

Personally, I have no interest in car reviews, even if they're connected to games in some way, and won't be reading them.

I'm with those who would prefer that psxextreme only contain content about gaming, and only PlayStation gaming at that. FWIW, I voted against expanding to include the XboxNerds site when you asked, but I simply ignored it when it appeared and can do the same for any car content.

If Arnold has an itch he needs to scratch, he should scratch it and see what the response is.

Sorry, no time to read all the comments above so if someone said this I apologize, how about reviewing your cars and then comparing them to the cars in GT5? Marry the two into a game-meets-life special feature. Or open a section for personal hobbies aside from games and just call it your "go nuts" section. Or that gamer lifestyle thing Johnny mentioned.

I agree, something along the lines of comparing them or relating them to videogames somehow. I'm not sure how often you could do this, but just thinking about rating cars on this site might bring negative backlash like "this score is unreliable, how can a VG site provide realistic reviews on cars?" type of response. I think PSXE members would agree that the reviews are real and objective but "others" may not.

were you thinking of implementing the same rating system? 10/10?

Absolutely not! Reviewing cars? What's next? Ben going to review gym equipment? No offense guys but I think your time is better spent on what this site is dedicated to. Wouldn't your time be better spent writing more game reviews? Or finding more news stories? Why not have editorials on where we can find bargains on games?

Yes, but people don't seem to understand that writing about cars is bad for the same reasons as writing about gym equipment. The only difference is that more people here seem to enjoy cars.

Why not then open it up to politics and sports like Ultimadream suggests?

Of course I understand that Arnold is interested in specifically writing about cars and is looking for a home for such articles but it stands to reason that car articles are as appropriate here as articles about sports, politics, or gym equipment.

Either make a direct tie-in with video games in each article or create a new home as many others have suggested. If the crew behind PSXE created a site dedicated to gamer lifestyle like many others suggested I would bookmark it and check it daily just as I do this one. Just leave this site as it is.

What separates this site from others is that you guys give glimpses into who you are, and what you like. These car reviews would be doing exactly that, and I'm all for it.

Hmm, I dunno =
Shinji from Crunchyroll.com decided one day to add a Cars section to the site, which was completely unfitting as the site was more dedicated to anime and Asian dramas. Now that Cars section doesn't even exist anymore [but tbh, Crunchyroll sucks nowadays anyway].

As for PSXE, it'll probably work considering it'll all be in editorials. Those interested in the subject will of course take their time to read these articles and those who come here to read about gaming will probably stay within their grounds, whilst also taking a glance from time to time.

Go ahead. It's worth a try and it isn't going to kill the site. As for me, I'm more of a motorcycle person =P

I don't know anything about cars but I do like that we are all part of a COMMUNITY and if cars are something others in this community are into, then I sure as hell have no problem with it. The fact that Arnold wants to share his passion of cars with the people of this site, instead of just going to a dedicated car site, displays to me that he holds the opinions of the members in here with high regard. And as a community, we should encourage more of this. This isn't just a gaming site, it's a place where we all come to share as a collective our common interests, ok mainly and namely that is computer games, but it's nice to have a refreshing break from time to time too.

Obviously it is random for a Playstation site, but I believe that both Ben and Arnold would enjoy doing it. Therefore, I think they should do it. I mean they obviously bust their asses getting all these articles, editorials, reviews, previews, etc. up for us that reviewing a car for us could be a nice break for them. Guarantee you all that the happier they are with their work, the happier we will be on the receiving end of their work.

I think at the end of the day, these two passions, Games and Cars, are something most of us can relate to and I would love to read about it.
Go for it Arnold! if anything, this new segment might bring people who are into cars into the hobby of gaming and vice versa. Will bring new readers to our community and strengthen and expand it.
Lets take a vote!!
All in favor say YEA!

Of course he'll review the 350Z, seeing as how he OWNS one.

I could chime in because I DID own one, but oh well. :)

never liked the 350Z its ugly and its far to much of a bling bling car, to much of a show off car.
whats wrong with the S2000?
its a popper coupe, something small light and nimble, and has a better ride height and better driving position.
the 350Z is a cross between normal saloon car and a go cart, it does not know what it wants to be.
copes should be low, nimble and compact the 350Z is neither of those.
not me just saying that either, Jeremy from top gear has always said that about them.

The 350Z is actually the perfect size and has the right focus. It's not tiny like a Miata or an S2000 because neither was the Z32 300ZX (or any Z-car, for that matter), nor the Supras, Mitsu 3000GT, and so forth. The S2000 is a different type of car, it's more for the Miata owner who wants a bit more power.

Ultimately, the S2K is overpriced for a car that offers less of everything. For one, the ugly and barren interior is hard to live with, as are the lack of creature comforts. It's far too small, as my 6'1 frame does not fit into it. Having driven my friend's S20000 a few times, all I did was complain about how cramped the interior was.

And then, I complained about how slow the car was. "Oh, but you have to rev it to 9000, dude" (an exaggeration, I know). So what is this then, a sports car or a Super Saiyan? I shouldn't have to run a car to its limits to get some life out of it. I don't want to wait for the 'V-tack' to kick in. If this is a track car, why didn't Honda design it with a motor that has low-end and mid-end grunt? A flexible powerband is crucial for a car with a chassis like the S2000's - it needs to enter the apex with power on tap, so that it can use that power immediately at the exit. The S2000 is not a car that can do that, you have to constantly string the car, and worry about the rear-end giving out since you're in a lower-gear, spinning near redline for power. Is it balanced? Sure is. And does it have, what in my opinion is the very best 6-speed transmission in the whole world? A bullet proof motor? Yep. Yep. But refined it isn't. Comfortable it isn't. Practical? Even less practical than a 350Z is. And driving it around town is just awful.

As a track car, the S2K is great, but it makes a terrible daily driver. Though, again, it does have the best 6-speed transmission of any car I've ever driven.

but thats the whole point of Vtech.
revving the guts out of the thing is the S2000s swan song.
could use with a little more power but than what car couldent?
and yea its not a practical car because its a coupe, its to small to fit anything in to.
its not suppose to be a every day car, coupes are not suppose to be every day cars.
there meant for weekends when its just you, no wife, no kids just you and the machine.
though your right about the interior, honda have never been good at interior.
well the only company that is, is alpha romeo those cars are car pornography!
next car i want to get is a 147GTA but thats a long, long, long way off :(

ewwwhewwhewwww, The only thing I like aboot Sony is the consoles. I would never buy a Sony LCD TV or Surround Sound, Its all aboot Samsung or Toshiba for LCD. Last I heard Sony TVs aren't even in the top 10 and if you put a Toshiba beside a Sony then you would know why. Hell I like Samsungs pic quality, but even they pale in comparison to Toshibas fantastic picture quality. For audio its Harmon Kardon.

That would be cool, especially if you posted them on sundays, since they are a little thin on new articles. It's usually only Ben's Week in Review that day, maybe one or two other articles. It would be interesting, and I think it's a good opportunity for you Arnold. Go for it, you only get one chance at stuff like this, and it's very obvious that cars are your passion.

I have no problem with it, Arnold. I'm not much of a gearhead so, personally, I wouldn't want to read your car editorials. HOWEVER, if that's the case, I'll just skip it and not read it and move on to the next PS3 article. I have no problem with it being there, though.

Arnold, why not try one article and see what happens in a non-game related specific section of the site.

Personally I come to this site for video game related content. I goto to other sources for var info and even then I'm not really interested in the finer details. (Top Gear being a perfect case in point.)

The shift review is a perfect example. It was an ok game, not really a sim at all and Grid was superior in pretty much every aspect. But the shift review went off into as tangent by digressing into stat heaven.

In all honesty, I really dont think car reviews fit, and I worry you will pitch the review at a level not really suitable to your community base.

But it appears the article wasnt really courting opinion, it was just preparing the community for the inevitable.

As a final point, the ps3 articles are great keep up this good work.
