Bungie's First PS3 Game Will Make A Big Splash In 2010

Bungie and PlayStation owners don't really mix, simply because the studio hasn't produced a game for a Sony platform since Oni way back in 2001.  Ever since, they've been on Microsoft's side.

As you all know, Bungie is responsible for the insanely popular Halo franchise, which is essentially the series that put the Microsoft Xbox on the map way back in 2001. Since then, every new release has sparked a new interest in either the Xbox or Xbox 360 and the most recent entry, Halo 3: ODST, created another FPS feeding frenzy amongst the faithful. However, we've known that Bungie has separated from Microsoft and since that announcement, we've wondered if the team will stick with Xbox exclusivity with their next project or be more practical and go multiplatform. Well, if the information heard on the most recent edition of the HipHopGamerShow is accurate, Bungie has been preparing their secret game for a little while now. This would have to be the case if their first PS3 game will debut next year. We sincerely doubt it'll be exclusive - unless Bungie really wants revenge on MS, or something - but the mere fact that it'll arrive on the PS3 at all is big news.

Another Halo, it will not be; Microsoft has a stranglehold on that franchise, I think. But whatever it is, it'll be intriguing for two reasons: 1. we'll get to see how Bungie handles the PS3, and 2. we'll see if they're capable of producing a quality title that doesn't say "Halo" on the box. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

It is quite ironic that before Microsoft bought them Bungie was known for making Mac games. And Halo was not initially intended to be an Xbox game at all.

Kevadu - Maybe that's why the original HALO came out for Macs, even though it was via MacSoft.

Also, keep in mind the first ~5000 Xbox 360 development units were PowerMac G5s, so maybe they needed some Mac-savvy people.

Yes - Marathon! What a great game for its time. The box set was wonderful. I was so disappointed when Halo went to M$. As a big time Mac user, I was always waiting for a GOOD game to come out. I had waited three years for Halo and then.......M$ :(

There is no question that Bungie can make a great game. Their concepts are creative and fresh, but they are going to have to catch up on the PS3 architecture. Let's hope they have already done this.

wait, something doesnt make sense. So naughty dog sharing information on how to develop PS3 games for the PS3 to a studio that broke free of microsoft, is a good thing for microsoft? Naughty dog is teaching other developers to develop for the ps3 and the ps3 architecture, its not like microsoft is going to start making games for the ps3.

they probally spilt because MS probz wanted them to just continue making halo games, as thats such a huge cash cow for them, while bungie probz wanted to branch out and make other franchises which MS probz didnt allow them to do, and since this game wont say halo on the box, they need to maximise profits so decided a multiplat game was the way to go, to reach the wider audience.... on saying that i know for a fact that there will be a sticker on the box saying from the people that brought you halo....

no they split because they wanted to keep the team together and so did Microsoft... Microsoft gets first dibs on any publishing rights so it's highly unlikely, though possible, that they will make a PS3 game. And they most certainlly will never make an exclusive

Probably not as they are not with Microsoft anymore and honestly I think it was their ad campaigning and shoving those games down the throats of gamers with Humvees and Master Chiefs and Mountain Dew and well, everything possible.

After Bungie broke away I am sure the Microsoft money machine disappeared too so when they put out these games they will have to rely on their inherent merits instead of a hype train of unstoppable magnitude.

IIRC Microsoft owns the Halo IP rights. Again IIRC Bungie split from Microsoft because they wanted to work on something besides Halo and wanted more freedom than they could get under the MS umbrella.

Either way, whatever they are working on for PS3 is unlikely to be Halo based.

Ben-

You really need to stop using HHG as a source. It doesn't matter if this bit is true, what matters is that about 70%-80% of everything else he puts on that site is junk with "LOOK AT ME" titles that don't even follow the article at times.

Look up the articles he posted on N4G for example (not a good example but it works). Very few people even try to think he knows just what the hell he's talking about. To make things worse he NEVERS defends his articles. Iv only seen him post on about 3 of his articles in total.

It's just that people that act like that really get on my nerves. It's like he's screaming "look at me, Im great, I have shiny things" all the time.

After re-readind this its making look like a racist. I hope Im not one, it's just my cousin acts almost the same way. I hate that a**hole. So that might be influencing my opinion of HHG.

Depends if it is multi-plat or not. If they were going PS3 exclusive, graphics would have a chance to be top notch. It will likely be multi-plat, therefor, graphics seem to sink to the lowest common denominator which will be the XBOX 360 capabilities.

I tink bungie made a great Halo. I dont think the franchise is as good as the hype! But Ill be honest I lovedthe first Halo when it first came out!

As for Bungie this means yeah they can make great games, but they were never bright and shiny games, and remind me of a saturday morning cartoon (halo in particular). I dont know if they can make the PS3 shine, and just the fact itll most likely be multiplat, says they wont do the PS3 justice anyways! If they were dedicated and spent time developing for the PS3 solely instead of working from the 360 over then i think they may have a chance. Otherwise all i see is a game that gameplay wise could be great, but graphics wise will probably be mediocre at best. I have never imagined bungie being the dev. that makes a game a graphical dream, but we'll see what happens.

Considering the facts that I don't see Epic making anymore exclusive titles for 360 outside of the Gears of War series and that Bioware is now owned by EA and their games will most likely all be going multi-platform after Mass Effect 2, if Bungie goes to work on a PS3 title, Microsoft will have nothing to keep their 360 alive. NOTHING!

The only reason that PS3's sales are inferior to the 360's sales is because the 360 had a year head start on the PS3. The PS3 is a much more powerful system with a lesser breakdown rate. I think after seeing Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 run on the PS3 this year, developers that aren't exclusive with Microsoft are going to be changing their minds on which system to develop for. It was only a matter of time before the PS3 KO'ed the 360.

im just wondering what the microsoft count is all about. i know that they only count units shipped but do they also count replacement 360? aside from having a 1 year head start, they are only about 7 million ahead of the ps3 which was a much higher price point. something tells me that this lead is made up of about 20% system sold, 30% still sitting in stores, and 50% replacements. although replacement might be higher. I wouldnt be surprised if sony already passed microsoft with total units SOLD.

This entire article rests on a rumor and speculation site, HHG, so a healthy dose of grain salt required. That said, the PS3 is selling like hot cakes now and I'm sure Bungie likes money. Money is money, so wether they actually make a multi-plat game or someone is starting rumors, to spur microsoft to show up at Bungie's door with bag-load of 360-exclusive cash is anyone's guess.

I'll beleive it when I see it.

i think they deserve a tad bit more respect, until they produce a crap game on the ps3, am gunner look forward to see what they can do.

What is so special about Bungie that they need my respect? Anyhow When I look Bungie all I see is just another average developer; not even Halo is special.

I dont understand why there are so many people who refuse to even look in HipHopGamers direction.
There is nothing wrong with his news or him.
Sure they are rumors... but he also reports on other things. And of course, as Ben said, plenty of what he says comes true.
Just think about this... his rumors hold more ground than the majority of rumors that pop up constantly on the internet, mainly because of the speculation of what is going on with the developers and such in the industry.
That and he doesnt seem to fall off of the face of the earth when what he says doesnt come true like so many other rumor starters.

It's mainly because most of gaming population is white males who still harbour ill will and/or racist stereotypes against black people. Not saying all gamers racist, but I know most probably wouldn't consider taking a "flashy" black man's wisdom on gaming seriously. Flashy as in flaunting behavior and use of slang.

Take this post from Chewy102 a few lines up for example:

"You guys see some of those HHG shows he makes every sunday? It's rare to find something in them that makes it worth the time.

He may be right at times but the way he acts and how he presents his articles makes him look like an ass to me. I try to keep an open mind to the ways of others. It's just that people that act like that really get on my nerves. It's like he's screaming "look at me, Im great, I have shiny things" all the time.

After re-readind this its making look like a racist. I hope Im not one, it's just my cousin acts almost the same way. I hate that a**hole. So that might be influencing my opinion of HHG."

Now Chewy is what I consider a Class A Hater, and a closet racist. I imagine him being the sort of guy who you'd hear in a pregame lobby in MW2 makin BLACK jokes and racist remarks.

He clearly doesn't like HHG because the guy likes to flaunt and show-off. So what? Can you discredit him because he talks and acts different? This is clearly a sign that although we have a black president, the world still wants the black man to change their ways.

I'm getting off topic, but their are a few people who look at what matters...and thats the news. Ben and Arnold are wise and right to look past the person and get what really matters. I respect them for that. Ive even heard one of them...I forgot which one...say they hate Rap music. But still they go to a primarily rap website to get news to educate the world.

Ben and Arnold are very professional. Chewy is a judgemental racist. I personally love HHG, because its more my style. But I'll admit that PSX is my favorite destination because their news is more truth based and less rumor based. Trying to discredit a source because of the way they talk and act is just plain wrong, (Chewy). More times than not HHG is right.

Its all about tastes Thugnificent. Me and you would probably enjoy HHG more than other members who don't like hip hop, because we like Hip Hop. (I base that on your Screen name, I like Boondocks also)

hhg has some pretty cool insights onto the world of gaming. His style and delivery may not be for everyone, and at times he sounds like he forgot what the hell he was just talking about, but over all, his ideas and energy gets me pumped up about the games he's shilling. And that right there is the whole point of his show.

Whoa Wizard, those are some harsh accusations. I don't see how Chewy's comment could have been taken as racist at all. I think he made a valid argument, although he should have backed it up. But just calling him racist like that is uncalled for.

HHG is an entertainer as well as a "journalist" and he has more sway then most of the people that run even the bigger blogs. It probably wont be long before he's sitting with the Kotaku guys and the Destructoid guys talking it up on gametrailers

Yeah, Oni was HORRIBLE. That just reminds me how great the internet is, I would never buy a game like that now because all it takes is a minute of research and you can get a sense of a games quality from all the online gaming resources.

Hopefully the Bungie game will be good but since it will most likely be multi-plat, I won't expect anything too mind-blowing (lookin' at you Uncharted 2)

no will be able to see if bungie can create a quality game full stop, i only liked the first halo everything after that was crap.
never say never, but i wont hold my breath on a bungie game coming to the ps3.
i would buy it, if it looked good, but the day a bungie game is running in my ps3 is the day my hair turns pink and i take up ballet lessons.
just cant see it happening there making far, far, far to much money for M$ there not going to let them go easily.
just like IW and activision, rumors say IW is looking to get away from them but well theres no way in hell activision are going to sit there and let it go by.
sure they cant force them to stay, but they can make their life a living hell and try to persuade them or should i say blackmail them.

Thank you 556pineapple for being honest. For all you xbox 360 haters...I can't blame you. But please, don't dock a previous exclusive developer. Halo is over hyped, however; it isn't a bad game. It is a good FPS that simply didn't change much after 3 installments. Does ODST count? Naaah. Let's just wait and see if Bungie can deliver a good non-Halo package. A developer who escapes Microsoft's grasp to discover and reveal their true talent deserves a chance at the very least.

Some people might dislike Oni, but there has been nothing yet that has come close to its gameplay.
It is 8 years old but I still play it only because of its combat system, the gunplay was good (keeping in mind it wasn't meant to dominate ),and I really like the laser aiming recticle, its far better than the aiming systems (where the camera moves to the right of the player) most 3rd person shooters employ these days. Animations were really well done too, the fighters looked really good doing their thing. It was unique and I loved it. Halo did nothing new for a FPS and the first time I played it I really felt the hype was unjustified. Oni was just an unpolished diamond. I wish bungie does another Oni, but a lot better with takedowns, multiple throws, nonlinear level design with stealth element, combat almost as deep as fighting games, ala gta IV ragdoll physics, and almost the same gunplay, and of course multiplayer, not another one of those fps'es.
