Devs Standing Firm On Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Rules

Naughty Dog hates quitters. They just didn't like the fact that players could leave online matches in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and not have to suffer any consequences.

Therefore, they implemented a new - and very strict - rule in order to deal with the problem: if you quit, you'll be fined $40,000. Now, you do get one free pass so feel free to drop the match in frustration when you first start playing. But every time after that, it's gonna cost you and a lot of gamers are none too happy about this policy, which unfortunately doesn't work to 100% functionality. The problem is, if you suddenly lose your Internet connection, or the power goes out, or the console freezes up, or whatever, it will be treated as a "quit," and you'll lose $40k. Obviously, this has caused a few irate gamers to speak up but according to Examiner, Naughty Dog ain't budging on their stance. Said Arne Meyer:

"Currently we’re confident we’ve made the right decision regarding penalties for leaving the match—remember you don’t get docked any cash for the FIRST time. We’re keeping a close eye on in-game stats and forums and we will make adjustments if and when we feel they are warranted."

Well, at least they're keeping an eye on things and if you make a big enough stink about it, they might return your lost money. They're also not ignoring the complaints; they're simply standing by their decision and there will be no backing out. So what do you say? Too strict? Or is this the best way to deal with the quitters who can have negative effects on a match?

It is about time there was real penalties in an online game for dropping out of a match before it is done. Bravo.

Sucks for people with crap connections, but again, if your connection sucks, online gaming is a pipedream in any form.

it doesnt take that much work to get nat 2. guides are even online. If you know this info and not do anything about it then you deserve the penalty. Dont screw up my gaming experience because you're too lazy to do it right. This is not aimed at you by the way.

Maybe the ND devs were playing online and were getting shafted by cheaters so they became jaded and put this rule in place.

That's a problem in most online multi-player team based games. I'm not sure that there is a good solution except profiling user quit patterns and penalizing people based on their actions and pattern.

Shouldn't there be a simple way to differentiate between a network error and someone simply choosing the "quit" option?

...I guess a player could just turn off the console or exit the game entirely and it would probably register the same as a network error would.

Hmm...

Or pull the plug from the modem to the Router, lag switch style. It's been tried in many games, but gives the cheaters a really easy way to create lag for their own benefit.

Not really. I know people who simply turn off their PS3 or quit the game to XMB which would cause a network time-out that could look like a network failure.

Kudos for Naughty Dog in sticking with their decision. The "irate fans" are almost always the cheaters who want to rank up fast, or who want to have great k/d ratios for bragging rights.

I wish more games would do this. Also, I wish there was a way for a server to detect people using glitching techniques or switches to help them cheat. Soooo annoying!

Speaking as an irate gamer who got penalized, I have to disagree completely because I am neither a cheater nor someone who has ranked up quickly. My 'sin' was to have the game glitch on me and lock up leaving no alternative but quitting. Of course that was when you got the penalty even on your very first 'quit'. But, it's not much fun to lose your rank and score because of a game or network glitch. It's all very well to be righteous about cheaters, but NG are being too draconian. At least a 3 strikes and your out policy would allow a small number of software or network glitch quits before a penalty occurs. If someone is cheating, they'll quit a darn sight more than three times.

I like the idea in theory. Quitters are the worst, especially in a game like MW2 where an entire team can bounce and leave one guy against six others. Not fun!

Perhaps this is the beginning of a system that will analyze players quitting habits over a period of time to determine who the quitters really are so adequate punishment can be laid down on them.

I've already been fined the 40 grand, and I think it sucks. In the middle of a game, I had to go help my daughter with something. Life happens. And plenty of things in life will enterfere with you trying to play a video game. I don't know about anyone else, but it takes me a decent amount of time to rack up $40,000.

Loosing $40,000 after it took you an hour or more to earn it, especially if you only play a couple hours a week, will make you seriously reconsider whether or not you want to bother playing a game any more.

How do you know if you have been docked the $40,000? Does it alert you the next time you log in that you have been docked, or do you guys keep an eagle eye on how much you have earned, and you know right away you have been docked?

I play it quite a bit, but to be honest, I would not notice being docked money unless I was alerted to the fact.

I have dropped out a few times. Never in the middle of a game, but when it is setting up the game, and it is looking for players, or just loading settings before the match begins, and like Troy, I have kids, and I have had to quit the game to attend to them.

Do you get docked only if you are in the middle of a game, or how about you have to bow out even before guns are drawn so to speak?

I am having some problems with this game online sometimes when the game start i cant move the character, it freeze up and i can do anything. i see the others players moving and they can kill me but i cant do anything. Sometimes i get a connection error message or sometimes i have to quit. I get the 40,000 penalty because of a glitch with the game and on top of that i cant rank up, that is frustrating. I have checked my connection, i have deleted the update data and installed again but its the same. Any body else having this problem?
By the way I can play MW2 and KZ2 with no problems online.
So they have to reconsider this penalty system its taking me out of the game!

The problem is the dorks that don't revive team mates. I played with one the other night, after being left hanging around for 10 minutes twice in the same game, I got annoyed enough to start taking potshots. Yes, I know I was left hanging, the dork was within a hands reach of me but made no attempt to revive me and was level 20-odd, so there's no way he didn't know how to revive.

Next time maybe I will take a potshot at someone who does that, or accidentally toss a grenade when they're standing next to a bad guy....oopsie.

It's too strict because it doesn't grant any grace in the case of a network or game failure. I've had the game lock up in a multi-player session and all I could do was quit. It's the one and only time I have ever quit, and I got a penalty for it.

If you're going to impose a painful penalty, then you must take some measures to ensure you're not hurting gamers who have done no wrong, because those are the gamers who will get annoyed and not come back. NG seems awfully righteous and pious about this, but not very considerate.

I agree with high, they should if they can figure out away to make the system recognize freeze ups. I do like the idea in general though. I've never had any lagging issues online with U2. I really do hate it when people start to quit the match. If too many quit the match ends or were stuck with uneven teams.

I've noticed a great majority leave because they suck. They take off halfway into the match, and when I look at their score they don't have any kills and massive deaths. THOSE people should be punished. Not people like High who have had freeze ups in the past.

While I love idea of penalizing the lousy quitters, ND really needs to be a little more flexible. I'd never bail on a game, but the other day I had a network error 10 seconds into a co-op game that booted everyone. So if that happens again I'm gonna drop a level?! It's not just the virtual money as many have pointed out. It's the leveling up to unlock extra stuff that I'm worried about.

I propose a 3 strike limit per week and a griefing system so we can help police ourselves. As much as I love U2, this will deter me from playing online much.

In MW2 it just counts as a loss and u dont get you match bonus, so what! You constantly switch hosts which is a nice addition, but 75% of the time you just get kicked from the game! Also if your winning people constantly leave and even though the number of people playing is huge, its hard to fill a room, when u have a party of 4!

Ive never quit a match but I have been disconnected before a couple of times, and to loose $40k is not fair to the players who have spent night and day into UC2 multiplayer who get disconnected and loose a good portion of their cash. Their has to be a better way to do this, if this happens to me over connection issues I will probably just stick with KZ2 & MW2 multiplayer.

it depends how you look at it? i understand 40k is alot but im sure maybe they'll figure some way to count in disconnects.

heres why i think its great! MW2 is horrible with disconnects and people quitting! if a team is losing half that team always quits, then its rtediculously hard to fill that room back up! ive waited in a lobby for 5 min, waiting b4 and it never fills, people join then wait 5 sec. leave and its a constant hassle. second even though it counts asa loss people dont care, something else needs to be enforced! Lastly the whole switching hosts in UC2 works great but in MW2 its horrible. It might be oke if your by yourself but 75% of the time if im in a party one of us will get kicked from the game while its switching hosts. the servers in MW2 are awful. in fact i havnt evperienced worse servers in awhile (operation flashpoint was the worst ever by far though). The game is absolutely awesome and will have me coming back for a blot longer than MW or a lot of other games but the servers are terrible!

Something like this needed to be done, and i congradulate naughty dog for the effort to stop this completely annoying and uncalled for non sense of quitting!

Damn how could Naughty Dog not think of a way to help people with Disconnects.

90% of multiplayer games like R2 don't count disconnects as quits.
How can you sync a 'Quit' or other statistics if the game servers are cut off from your account?

thank god i did not bother with the online otherwise id be really pissed.
i mean seriously consoles play up, 4 times just today my ps3 has frozen on my while playing assassins creed 2.
4 times in less than 3 hours.
thank god they did not have that in the beta otherwise i would of not played a single game and would of been on the forums telling ND off.
how can they do this for something thats so common and easy to happen?
i mean jesus christ i cant turn on my ps3 once without the net dropping out, its as regular as me eating or going to sleep.
its a normal part of my everyday life now, swearing at my ps3 because it keeps dropping the connection.
ive lost allot of respect for ND because of this.
sorry guys you now slip from #4 to # 20 now.

When I first read the article I thought they were fining individuals $40,000 of REAL money! LOL

I haven't played online yet with UC2 but it sounds fun, but I agree, every once in awhile I lose connection for some reason, I thought it was more due to the servers cuz I never lose connection when I'm browsin the internet..

its called online multiplayer, and you dont go into a game unless you have the time.

next you'll be complaining that you can't pause multiplayer too right? :P

I think my son had the best recommendation for this.
How about no money deducted, no rank change...just a 5 minute timeout.....
Or maybe 10 minute timeout, where you could not join another online game for 5 minutes

I remember when this was first announced, I think the penalty was $100,000! I've thought alot about this. Sure, it sucks that some innocent people may get penalized but I think this weeds out more bad people than good. Maybe they could support some kind of appeal process with the recorded games option? I'm not sure what could be done with systems that freeze because I don't think there is a way for Naughty Dog to tell that on there end. But ya I think maybe, as someone already mentioned, maybe a 3-strikes approach over 1 time would be better. I could've swore they said the penalty only happened if one left the game alot in a short period of time. I play online alot and the system seems to work fine to me. I don't know, but when it comes to people that disconnect alot from there ip, they need to take some personal responsibility. If online gaming is important then get a good ip for it. On another note in regards to people on psn over xbl, people need to stop with those stupid biased judgments. I own both a ps3 and a 360 and the vulgor, rude, immature, and disturbingly racist people are rampant on both networks! I'll gladly deal with any penalty that may come if it means one less person like that. Very interesting how people get all irate over a $40K penalty, but there's nothing being done about the disturbing vulgor and racist behavior of many playing online games on these networks!

Who says nothing happens to those who use vulgar or abusive language? Sony has permanently banned PS3 game systems and users for such offenses in Home and online games, and continues to do so.

Oh, to the posting above mine. I beleave there is a wait period inplemented before you receive a money penalty that makes it take longer for you to join another match.

I applaud ND for their stance in penalizing gamers for quitting.

That said, I agree with others here who argue that their stance IS a bit draconian. There are so many things that can happen when you are playing the PS3 online that might appear as if you had quit even if you had not:
(1) losing your internet connection
(2) some glitch kicking you out of PSN sign, which would kick you out of the game as well
(3) the game or the PS3 glitching, necessitating rebooting the PS3
(4) power failure
There are probably several other reasons as well, but the crux of my argument is that, there are several things that can make it appear as if you have left the game without any wilful participation on your part.

In my opinion, if ND are to take such extreme steps, then they should go the extra mile and patch in some code or something which would enable them to differentiate between a normal quit or a manual PSN sign-out (which would be deliberate), and an abrupt sign-off or loss in connection or something (which would be out of the gamer's hands). Granted, the potential will exist for some gamers to just pull the plug on their PS3 or internet connection, but, in my opinion, the percentage of people who will endure the hassle of reconnecting or rebooting for just exiting a losing game will be considerably less.

every so often i get dropped from a game, 'its because i use a router and connect wireless'
but i have to!' ive never quit while playing... so the other night this happend, i was dropped from a game it cut me 40k i wasnt so mad but when it cut my level.. i was irrate! then it happened agian i went from 35 to lvl 33 almost. I put alot of time into getting those levels and if it is to happen agian I probably will consider not playing it anymore. ND is gonna lose alot of peeps online on U2 i think because i hear of many people having this problem time to time. They definitly need a way to detect lost connections cuz its pointless to lose your skill level from somthing out of your control.....

I use to dislike quitters but with MP likes this i'll just take the 40K hit. I just can't accept it like everyone else. To me it completely unbalances the game when you make it take exactly 23 bullets to kill an enemy and then put a shotgun, hammer and pistole on the map and allow others one hit kills. Just give the option to play only one hit kill games. I really get irate when I shoot someone a so many times and they just keep running or hide behind something. Main reason why I mostly play co-op which needs new maps fellas.
