Devs Standing Firm On Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Rules
Naughty Dog hates quitters. They just didn't like the fact that players could leave online matches in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and not have to suffer any consequences.
Therefore, they implemented a new - and very strict - rule in order to deal with the problem: if you quit, you'll be fined $40,000. Now, you do get one free pass so feel free to drop the match in frustration when you first start playing. But every time after that, it's gonna cost you and a lot of gamers are none too happy about this policy, which unfortunately doesn't work to 100% functionality. The problem is, if you suddenly lose your Internet connection, or the power goes out, or the console freezes up, or whatever, it will be treated as a "quit," and you'll lose $40k. Obviously, this has caused a few irate gamers to speak up but according to Examiner, Naughty Dog ain't budging on their stance. Said Arne Meyer:
"Currently we’re confident we’ve made the right decision regarding penalties for leaving the match—remember you don’t get docked any cash for the FIRST time. We’re keeping a close eye on in-game stats and forums and we will make adjustments if and when we feel they are warranted."
Well, at least they're keeping an eye on things and if you make a big enough stink about it, they might return your lost money. They're also not ignoring the complaints; they're simply standing by their decision and there will be no backing out. So what do you say? Too strict? Or is this the best way to deal with the quitters who can have negative effects on a match?

I wish more games would do this. Also, I wish there was a way for a server to detect people using glitching techniques or switches to help them cheat. Soooo annoying!

Perhaps this is the beginning of a system that will analyze players quitting habits over a period of time to determine who the quitters really are so adequate punishment can be laid down on them.

Loosing $40,000 after it took you an hour or more to earn it, especially if you only play a couple hours a week, will make you seriously reconsider whether or not you want to bother playing a game any more.

I play it quite a bit, but to be honest, I would not notice being docked money unless I was alerted to the fact.
I have dropped out a few times. Never in the middle of a game, but when it is setting up the game, and it is looking for players, or just loading settings before the match begins, and like Troy, I have kids, and I have had to quit the game to attend to them.
Do you get docked only if you are in the middle of a game, or how about you have to bow out even before guns are drawn so to speak?

By the way I can play MW2 and KZ2 with no problems online.
So they have to reconsider this penalty system its taking me out of the game!

Next time maybe I will take a potshot at someone who does that, or accidentally toss a grenade when they're standing next to a bad guy....oopsie.

If you're going to impose a painful penalty, then you must take some measures to ensure you're not hurting gamers who have done no wrong, because those are the gamers who will get annoyed and not come back. NG seems awfully righteous and pious about this, but not very considerate.

I agree with high, they should if they can figure out away to make the system recognize freeze ups. I do like the idea in general though. I've never had any lagging issues online with U2. I really do hate it when people start to quit the match. If too many quit the match ends or were stuck with uneven teams.
I've noticed a great majority leave because they suck. They take off halfway into the match, and when I look at their score they don't have any kills and massive deaths. THOSE people should be punished. Not people like High who have had freeze ups in the past.

I propose a 3 strike limit per week and a griefing system so we can help police ourselves. As much as I love U2, this will deter me from playing online much.

In MW2 it just counts as a loss and u dont get you match bonus, so what! You constantly switch hosts which is a nice addition, but 75% of the time you just get kicked from the game! Also if your winning people constantly leave and even though the number of people playing is huge, its hard to fill a room, when u have a party of 4!
Great job naughty dog!

heres why i think its great! MW2 is horrible with disconnects and people quitting! if a team is losing half that team always quits, then its rtediculously hard to fill that room back up! ive waited in a lobby for 5 min, waiting b4 and it never fills, people join then wait 5 sec. leave and its a constant hassle. second even though it counts asa loss people dont care, something else needs to be enforced! Lastly the whole switching hosts in UC2 works great but in MW2 its horrible. It might be oke if your by yourself but 75% of the time if im in a party one of us will get kicked from the game while its switching hosts. the servers in MW2 are awful. in fact i havnt evperienced worse servers in awhile (operation flashpoint was the worst ever by far though). The game is absolutely awesome and will have me coming back for a blot longer than MW or a lot of other games but the servers are terrible!
Something like this needed to be done, and i congradulate naughty dog for the effort to stop this completely annoying and uncalled for non sense of quitting!

i mean seriously consoles play up, 4 times just today my ps3 has frozen on my while playing assassins creed 2.
4 times in less than 3 hours.
thank god they did not have that in the beta otherwise i would of not played a single game and would of been on the forums telling ND off.
how can they do this for something thats so common and easy to happen?
i mean jesus christ i cant turn on my ps3 once without the net dropping out, its as regular as me eating or going to sleep.
its a normal part of my everyday life now, swearing at my ps3 because it keeps dropping the connection.
ive lost allot of respect for ND because of this.
sorry guys you now slip from #4 to # 20 now.

I haven't played online yet with UC2 but it sounds fun, but I agree, every once in awhile I lose connection for some reason, I thought it was more due to the servers cuz I never lose connection when I'm browsin the internet..

That said, I agree with others here who argue that their stance IS a bit draconian. There are so many things that can happen when you are playing the PS3 online that might appear as if you had quit even if you had not:
(1) losing your internet connection
(2) some glitch kicking you out of PSN sign, which would kick you out of the game as well
(3) the game or the PS3 glitching, necessitating rebooting the PS3
(4) power failure
There are probably several other reasons as well, but the crux of my argument is that, there are several things that can make it appear as if you have left the game without any wilful participation on your part.
In my opinion, if ND are to take such extreme steps, then they should go the extra mile and patch in some code or something which would enable them to differentiate between a normal quit or a manual PSN sign-out (which would be deliberate), and an abrupt sign-off or loss in connection or something (which would be out of the gamer's hands). Granted, the potential will exist for some gamers to just pull the plug on their PS3 or internet connection, but, in my opinion, the percentage of people who will endure the hassle of reconnecting or rebooting for just exiting a losing game will be considerably less.

but i have to!' ive never quit while playing... so the other night this happend, i was dropped from a game it cut me 40k i wasnt so mad but when it cut my level.. i was irrate! then it happened agian i went from 35 to lvl 33 almost. I put alot of time into getting those levels and if it is to happen agian I probably will consider not playing it anymore. ND is gonna lose alot of peeps online on U2 i think because i hear of many people having this problem time to time. They definitly need a way to detect lost connections cuz its pointless to lose your skill level from somthing out of your control.....

Sucks for people with crap connections, but again, if your connection sucks, online gaming is a pipedream in any form.
