Call Of Duty Series Rakes In $3 Billion

Oh, Mario. If only you could've known way back in the '80s that the word "billion" would be used to describe anything in the world of video games...

Today, Activision Blizzard has announced that the insanely popular and critically revered Call of Duty franchise has topped $3 billion in retail sales worldwide, "according to The NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal Activision estimates." Since the original launched, total sales have reached 55 million units and as you all know, the recently released Modern Warfare 2 broke just about every major sales record in the first day or two (4.7 million units in 24 hours, $550 million in five days, etc.). Said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

This is great and all, but has anyone considered the amount of pressure that now rests on Treyarch's shoulders for next year's Call of Duty iteration? We say they came through in fine fashion back in 2008 with what is arguably the best WWII shooter ever, but it's clear the new game won't have the same setting. Perhaps they saw just how crazy popular a new idea can be but either way, they have some gigantic shoes to fill... Anyway, it's obvious that Activision and Kotick have struck gold; lots and lots and lots of it.  And you can bet they wanna find more.

Well, add me to the list of CoD:MW2 buyers. I didn't have a choice if I wanted to save $10. I gave Bobby a lot of money this month.

Treyarch are better developers IMO W@W didn't seem to have anywhere near the amount of issues in the online portion as MW or MW2. I'm not saying that all the games aren't great I'm just saying you can see who isn't getting Micro$. Treyarch are blatantly less "console biased" to the point where IW just look like a bunch of 360 fanboys with their timed map packs, etc.

When I had COD: WaW, Treyarch were definitely a little more biased to the Xbox side. They gave them some benefits first.

i like IW CoD games a lot more than treyarch's, mainly cuz CoD3 was such a let down. But IW are the ones always accused of being in favor of the 360, not treyarch.

Comparing Treyarch to IW, is like comparing apples to apples. They're both quality developers. Treyarch just got stuck with the now very tired WWII theme. I'm looking forward to their next project in a new setting.

Oh....and if Mario wills, let him send a few fireballs Kotick's way.

Just like the Administrator seems to, I too worship at the alter of Mario.

Well, the best thing that could happen to Kotex, is that the dumb-ass sold all those shares "BEFORE" this $3 billion announcement, & not after it.

I hope he's keeps kicking himself in the butt, till all of his hemorrhoids explode!

I think IW should get the CoD titles every two years. Its their baby imo. Let Treyarch put their talents to something else, would be great more than likely and give them a chance to step away from IW's shadow

this is why im really worried about the industry.
its only a matter of time till developers wake up and smell the coffee and say.
hey we can release a crappy short 5 hour game and it will sell millions.
why are we busting our a$$ creating a 10 times better game, when it probably wont sell as well.
instead of releasing a new IP lets just mooch off a well known series.
and that ladies and gentleman will be the death of gaming.
and thanks to all the idiots that flock in and salve at the mouth every time IW walk in the door.
thanks guys, thanks to you we probably wont see another uncharted 2 caliber game ever again.

Well i bought the game and played a bit of the campaigne... but i put it down cuz i seemed to be glued to uncharted pretty badly... It is an awesome FPS though
