PS3 Off To A Fast Holiday Start

The holiday season is always critical for video game manufacturers and most agreed that Sony had the definite edge heading into Black Friday. Well, so far, things are going quite well.

In looking around the Internet, one can see the PlayStation 3 is a hot-ticket item for holiday shoppers. As compiled by PS3Center, best seller lists for major retailers prove that consumers have responded to the top-notch games and those "It Only Does Everything" commercials. The 120GB PS3 bundle Amazon had, featuring inFamous and Killzone 2, used to be higher than #10 on Amazon's top seller list but it has dropped because they're now sold out. There are two Xbox 360 games in the top 10 for Amazon - Halo 3: ODST and Left 4 Dead 2 - but the console barely cracks the top 100, which signifies that the games aren't system sellers; those who already have the 360 are buying those two titles, that's all. As for PS3 games, even last year's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is in the top 25, which is more proof that we're seeing a lot of new PS3 owners; what would you buy if you just got the console? Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will take a prominent place on that list throughout the holiday season, too.

Oh, and the PS3 is also the more popular selection at both Best Buy and Wal-Mart right now (even though the Wii still has a slight lead at the latter retailer), while the 360 isn't really even close. So thus far, Sony should be pleased with the PS3's showing...now, it just needs to carry this popularity on through December.

According to some website and analysis, the 360 either outselling the Ps3 or will outsell the ps3 3:1, can someone show me whether they're wrong or right?

It may have. But I know for a fact the 360 isn't outselling the PS3 at a 3:1 ratio right now. The PS3 is selling better overall in the past few months, so of course that can't be true.

i am working at best buy right now in the gaming section. during my 10 hour shift, the 360 section had almost noone there while the wii and ps3 section had the most people. when they ask me what game i could suggest, the first thing that comes to mind was uncharted 2. The ps3 bundle we had sold out by the time i got there, the one with ratchet and clank acit and littlebigplanet was already sold out. even dragon age origins for ps3 was sold out while there was still a lot for 360. the only thing that we sold out on 360 is left for dead 2. I guess you can blame the crap 360 sales because the bundle sucks. sure it comes with 6 games but 6 crap games.

The Xbox did outsell the PS3 after the slim came out, that was only because Walmart have been giving out $100 gift cards for a $199 Xbox, that is only in US. Which is pretty pathetic. The PS2 didn't break $100 until it's 9th year. The Xbox with more advance technology broke that in it's 4th year.

No, what 360 has to spur that frenzy is garbage hardware. Doesn't make sense you say? Well everybody I know, and myself were Xbox ONLY players and went through multiple consoles, (I never owned a 360 that lasted longer than a year) so we all bought "backup" consoles, which, means more sales for MS.

Everybody I know, and myself are now PS3 (still using same PS3) ONLY owners, we've dumped off the 360 (over 1 year now) and couldn't be happier.

Somebody please explain why I keep hearing Xbox has all the best exclusives and PS3 has barelly any. I'm confused, as far as I'm aware of, the only exclusive Xbox has is Halo 3 and that's going to PC just like EVERY other Xbox "exclusive" game. So, really they aren't exclusives because they're on PC, correct?

1 last part, recently MS banned close to 1 million Live members' XBOX but not gamertags. So, you guy another console and there you go. I also read MS "TIMED" this banning to spur more sales. Plus, once you make a gamertag, it's there forever, MS will NOT delete it. We all cancled our Live memberships and the indian dudes on the phone all said the same thing, "we cannot delete gamertags" I call BS, MS just doesn't want to because it will bring down thier total live subscriber numbers. My opinion anyways

Sony f'ed up with the PSP making it hackable and you don't see them trying to fry you for it (even though it'd be a pretty tough endeavor). AND you might be on to something with the Gamertag count comment. I guess you gotta think like a crook (for a second) to see through it...

Yeah, i think that 3:1 comment came from someone from microsoft. The only way they'll get that now after seeing black friday/holiday is if they had a master switches that would red ring a percentage of consoles either forcing owners either to drop it or buy new ones. The conspiracy begins.

I saw that web article too. It was clearly fabricated. They didn't have any evidence to back it up. And everyone in the comments section suggested they were paid off by Microsoft or the article was written by a Microsoft employee or Xbot.

This is why I trust PSXextreme. They use evidence to find which console or game is most popular in retailers or downloads. Little to nothing is fabricated without letting the reader know if its clearly speculation on the writer's part.

Halo ODST is one example. Even though the PS3 is showing high popularity right now, Ben et al all agreed that Halo was even more popular and rightfully so. While I personally do not like Halo games, I still respect its popularity and its excellent use of Live services. It's the main reason I got a 360 and Halo 3 just so I could enjoy some friendly competition with friends.

Anyway, the website claiming 360 outselling PS3 3:1 is taken from 1 retailer, 1 RETAILER!!! Yeah, that's really accurate!!!

Amazon is the most popular online purchase site, so I go by what is popular with them. And if they say the PS3 is more popular, then PS3 is popular. Other websites claiming otherwise are either Microsoft fanboys scared of accepting the truth, or are actual MS employees writing it to try and defend their slowly dying console.

If the EB sales are anything to go by, MS realises their console offers nothing compared to PS3 and so are offering 5 free games with their console to try and beat the competition. To the trained eye, this comes across as desperate, and the 5 games aren't even that good compared to the 2 free games (or tech) offered by Sony.

Xbox 360 Elite + Lego Batman + Pure + Bioshock + Mass Effect + Splinter Cell Double Agent = $449

PS3 120 GB + NFS Underground + Battlefield Bad Company = $499

PS3 250GB + Play TV / Assassin's Creed 2 / Uncharted 2 + NFS Underground + Battlefield Bad Company = $599

Remember this is Australia prices. Now, given, the 120 gig PS3 deal isn't the best, Mass Effect and Bioshock are clearly effective system sellers, but Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed 2 or Play TV are enough to sell the 250 gig PS3, and those are literally flying out the door this christmas.

I prefer your Black Friday PS3 deals. Our ones here for christmas aren't great right now, but they will be changing every few weeks leading to christmas. Will let you know if the PS3 deals improve at all.

Let me relate a story I posted in another news article here:

I was browsing the games in a GameStop a few Saturdays ago when I overheard him talking to another customer. Actually, I heard the customer first, repeating so "You're saying Msft over Sony." The kid said something back that I can't recall, and I tried to ignore him (as I normally do). But, then he said something I couldn't ignore; and I felt like I was back in 2006 again.

"When Sony gets any good exclusive games, then I'll give them a chance. And I own a PS3."

Like, every Xbot who is an Xbot doesn't claim he owns a PS3 so they don't look like an Xbot!

Well, I was stunned; I couldn't ignore him anymore, so I interjected "Are you kidding me?"

To which he replied, "When Sony gets 10 good exclusive PS3 games I'll take them seriously."

Well, after that it wasn't pretty as I told him to stop talking out of his ass and I and another customer put him in his place, quickly listing the Ps3's good, exclusive franchises.

By the way, when I mentioned Gran Turismo, he replied, "Isn't Gran Turismo coming to the 360?"

You can't make this stupidity up. Seriously, where do they get this crap?

actually i think its the other way around... ps3 is outselling the 360 3:1... i work at walmart and on friday alone the ps3 sold about 80 systems while the 360 barely sold 20... I think this christmas belongs to sony

Brought my PS3 Slim to the shop I bought it. Yesterday evening showed the Red screen of death! And this after just 3 months! First PS3 fat didn't read any disks after 1,5 year. I'm a big and loyal fan of all Sony consoles but this is just absurd. Hope it will be fixed before Christmas.

Its pretty funny how much people dont know about the ps3. When i was talking to them they didnt know about netflix, ps3 web browser, easy hard drive replacement, and the psn store. would've thought they would do some sort of research if they're buying something 299 bucks. I also got asked what a good game was to give to their 14 year old grand daughter. My mind just went blank trying to think of a game. hell i can tell them what game a guy would want easy but game for girls. luckily i passed by littlebigplanet and suggested that. i could've said uncharted 2 but i dont really know what 14 year olds are into. Most of the 14 year olds i encounter are online with mw2 trying to act tough.

Kinda notice how the ratings systems doesnt work at all during the holidays. this kid was trying to have his mom buy him the modern warfare 2 360bundle and i know he wasnt close to 18. I guess the phrase "thats all i want for christmas" just beats the rating system.

that came up too. the guy was asking if we had wired controllers because he didnt want the standard wireless controllers because he didnt want to keep buyin batteries. In a tone that tells him you're a moron, i told him if he wanted to have a wired controller to just use a recharge cable to make it wired.

I talked my friend into getting one, but the second I went to Amazon to confirm there were the KZ2 and inFamous bundles online they were already sold out. He's still getting a PS3 though.

if you look at the ps3 bundles everywhere vs. 360 bundles, no matter how many games you get with 360, its like microsoft gave up until they release a new 360 with natal. and even the people i know that want to try natal and that milo thing just want to test out how much they can mess with the game.

theres no comparison. Sony has amazing bundles. Arkham asylum + dark knight blu-ray, god of war collection, infamous + killzone 2, little big planet + ice age blu ray, plus any unique bundles store can think of.

Apart from the MW2 pack, MS only has indiana jones lego and Madasgar. On DVD.

I don't give two craps about your orientation, your politics, your faith or whether you support guns or not. WTF, man? You're normally the voice of reason.

1. The image isn't an example of pedophilia: there's no sex and the kiss isn't an unwelcome sexual advance by an adult on a minor, but an unwelcome political act by a (fictional) teenager on an adult.
2. The "Censored" bar covers the kiss completely.
3. Sweedie agreed to change it if the admins asked him to do so, but they didn't ask.

I think it was an excellent solution in the face of unreasonable requests. It might be a good idea to change it completely, in order to placate the few who are upset, but most of those who were complaining accepted the modification as adequate.

No contest, Sony is going to blow everyone else out the water this holiday season as well.
I would not be surprised if they outsold the Wii as well.
The great games just keep on coming and the beginning of the year looks like another win for Sony... Is almost like MS just don't know what to do anymore, there are no exclusives coming to the Xbox360 big enough to fight off what Sony is bringing these days.
Just hope I get a bigger bonus from my company this year, will need it for all the great games coming in the beginning of next year :)

Yeah, I know. Buying a replacement somehow seems easier to some people than having to buy a new system just to play the same games with some gimmicky add-on. I dunno, I just have a feeling that the worm may finally turn, and all the sheeple who purchase d multiple Xbox360s might finally balk at yet another re-purchase.

While doing some Black Friday shopping yesterday morning, I saw only 1....I mean ONE....kid that had a Xbox. At Walmart, Best Buy, and a GameStop I went to...All I saw was PS3s, a couple of Wiis, and A LOT of DSis in people's stacked shopping carts.

I predict the Wii outsells the PS3 by a small %, like 10%-15% at the most. The 360 drags behind just like its video game line-ups.

I was just at our local Walmart and they are getting peoples names and numbers to give them a call when they get the next shipment of PS3 in, Nice to see that.. They are fully stocked with 360's though LOL.
The 2 items that are outsold and hot are the PS3's and Nintendo DS's I can pretty much find everyother console like a Wii or 360 and PSP.

Good News!

What would i buy if i was just getting my PS3 now? I grew up on both the Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto series' as a lot of people probably would have, so coming into this generation they were the absolute must have for me. However thanks to the Grand Theft Auto delay I was able to finance a console before either of them released, but there was no way i was going to let Metal Gear Solid 4 be released with out me playing it immediately!

BTW, speaking of 360's I've been needing one to put into my collection, so I finally broke down & headed over to GameStop to buy a cheap used "Elite" model.

But WTF, GS won't sell any used 360 systems with the hard drive still attached.
You have to buy the HD separately(I'm guessing it has something to do with GS not being able to wipe the drive clean and/or reformatting it).

Now with the added cost to the Elite from having to also buy a hard drive too, it comes out almost the same as buying the Elite brand NEW.
So because of all the RROD nightmares that others have had, I decided to just buy it new for the extra 3 year warranty that comes with it.

Now while I was there, I noticed that they just got the new Limited Edition 250 GB COD Modern Warfare2 360 bundle for $499.99, and besides having the an extra 130 GB's, thr console is COD MW2 skinned, & also comes with both the MW2 game & a TWO controllers.

Well, the game & extra contoller are built into the extra $100 price(no pulling the wool over my eyes,LOL), but I liked the idea of having that extra 130GB's for free. And since there were only 2 left that weren't already on someone's pre-order "hold", I snatched one of the remaining 2 up right then.

Well, long story short, my $499.99 250GB 360 bundle was dead right out of the box.
Once I put any disc inside, the gears started grinding so bad, & chattering so loud, it sounded like someone threw a dozen marbles into a rotating clothes dryer(it wasn't effecting the discs or the gameplay though, thank goodness).

I quickly boxed it up & ran back to replace it before the last one was gone(because once sold out, then tough luck, cause once that lot was gone, they're gone for good with no more arriving).

Anyways, compared to the first one, this 2nd one works fine(I guess), but I have noticed that every single time I put any kind of disc in to the machine, that the fan kicks into a very high speed & the humm it makes sure sounds way way louder than my 60GB PS3.

So does anyone here with a 360 too, know if this is the "norm" for these 360s????
And there's no "rumble" to the controllers too??? In this time & age, WTF is up with that.....SERIOUSLY???

A good friend of mine decided to buy an xbox so he could play online with some guys from our school. It literally died within a half hour of being turned on.
We were sitting in a room with three other xbox owners, all of whom just laughed it off as he and another friend drove off to gamestop to replace it.

I, in the meantime, continued playing COD MW2 on my PS3.

yeah, all 360 controllers have rumble. Try turning it on from the settings menu of the game. If not then your controllers are screwed. And its pretty loud fan too. sony sent me a refurbished ps3 and its pretty loud now but my 360 still kicks my ps3s ass when it comes to noise.

yeah I gave in when dead rising came out, on lucky number 4 and have not played the thing since fable 2 came out.

yeah all 360's are loud as hell and your controllers should have vibration (almost said dualshock) make sure you don't put it on carpet or all the plastic inside will melt and don't ever touch the thing if there is a disk in it or it will scratch the living hell out of it.

I wass amazed at teh stock that Bestbuys had at my local store in Mesquite Tx at 4 am they had 3 pallets full and 1 of the 360s at 1pm when i went back they had 1 palet left of the ps3 bundles.. at 5 my sister was at walmart picking up a ps3 bundle i asked here to get for my kids and she said that there was a line for ps3's dsi's and 360's the dsiline had a hundred or more in it. the ps3 line had around the same and the 360 had 3 for real 3 people in line for that crappy bundle.. lol I am so glad Sony is having a great week to bad that wally world isnt counted in the npd numbers my stoer had 100 of the bundled ps3 and was sold out before 6.30 and the 3 pallets at bestbuys really shows how serious sony is on getting this unit to us americans. not only is the systems selling well but of what i saw a lot of triple a tiles where out of stock as-well. and blue-ray movies went even better at 10.00 bucks each at wally world. I can't believe this BS on xbox out selling 3to 1 crap it's more lickly the other way around on what i have seen.. My friend at gamestop told me the ps3 was selling better then xboxes by 2-1 on Friday.

How will Natal affect PS3?

From what I see, the machine MIGHT attract casual gamers like the Wii did.

Especially family that doesn't game like there's no tomorrow.

i dont see a big impact on the ps3 since its also getting motion technology. but mainly that microsoft probably wont be selling natal cheap. I mean the draw of the wii was that its a new way to play and its cheap. sure, natal is a new way to play but they still have to buy a 360 and a hard drive (im assuming that a hard drive will be required for natal since online games require hard drives and natal isnt just a regular camera), so arcade wont work, that price point is pretty tough for casual players.

well the ps3 motion control won't be cheap either, firs you will need to spend $40 on the ps eye then if the dual shock 3 is any indication on how much the ps3 wand will cost than two of those will set you back $120 so overall you will need $160 to play motion games on ps3 (still cheaper than rock band the beatles)

Natal is a code name for a project that will produce at most an augmented Xbox360. Can you imagine how many gamers will want to rush out and buy yet another new Xbox360 just to get optional 3D motion sensing/control?

I'd also bet that there will be an add on for existing Xbox360s. As for how it will impact PS3, I think it will have as lasting an impact on PS3 as the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 had on Jupiter. There were immediate visible impacts that lasted for some months before vanishing without a trace.

Sony motion controls are planned to be released several months before Natal. It's just that MS is spending more $ on advertising and promoting it.

If Sony promote Eyepet, the camera and the new Motion Controls (Sphere is it? Ben, do you know if it's officially been called Sphere or was that just a rumour?), then I believe the PS3 will see an even bigger boom from the casual market.

People watch a lot of TV and parents read a lot of newspapers, so those are the 2 best mediums to advertise these things.

I just hope Sony get there product out there and advertised before the Natal hype takes over. Natal looks pretty good, but I trust Sony's E3 on-stage demo more than I trust MS's pre-rendered Natal video. Their on-stage demo sucked compared to PS3's motion controls demo. I guess they're relying on Sony's old strategy of "be patient and watch what it'll do 2 years from now". (waits for the thumbs down for that last comment, but please remember that it was true 2 years ago.)

As in....I'm a gaming "COLLECTOR"
(13 consoles, 4 handhelds, 1481 games so far)

Besides them, and over a period of time, I'm also gonna pick up a new black PS2 Slim, a new silver Ps2 slim, a "USED" Wii, and my old Intellivision & Colecovision consoles again soon too.
And then probably a another PS3, but this time it will be a 250GB Slim, theme-skinned bundle when I see one I like.
