New FFXIII Info Includes Weapon, Mission Details

Now that we've worked our way through the box art controversy, what say we talk about what really matters? I.e., the game?

More info and details have come to light concerning the gameplay of Final Fantasy XIII and once again, we emerge from this brief learning process more excited than ever. As summarized over at Kotowari, the world of FFXIII will be both deep and innovative in its own little way. Weapons can be customized, each character uses a certain class of weapon, you'll need raw material for the aforementioned customization, and a weapon "levels up" over time. Once it reaches a certain level, it becomes a "Key Item;" essentially, it will then be a piece of material needed for an even better weapon. At least, that's how I'm understanding the weapon breakdown. Another interesting tidbit comes in the Accessories section; it seems there will only be three base stats for each character (Attack Power, Magic Power, and HP...although doesn't there need to be MP?), and the rest of your character's abilities will be dictated by the accessories they wear. Yeah, I've seen something like this before.

Lastly, you've got the extra missions, which has you tackling a certain monster roaming about the dangerous plains. One example shown is that tremendously large Cactuar (ah, cactuars), although early on, many targets will be mostly common monsters. To me, all of this sounds like yet another fresh take on a Final Fantasy gameplay mechanic and yet...it still seems like vintage FF. How do they do that?

I would like the equipped weapons and clothes to be shown on the battle screen. I have seen (if any) RPG do that, limited weapons, but never seen armors. It doesn't get me excited when i spend all this time hunting an armor, only to look the same on screen.

I suggest playing Dragon Age. Armor, weapons, ect... that are equipped are shown.

Lot's of WRPGs do that. Also, check out some of the trailers of Resonance of Fate (you might have to look for End of Eternity) that show off its extensively detailed clothing customization options, which will appear both in-game and in the cutscenes.

I like that only the weapon in hand changes in Final Fantasy titles.

Another RPG that show the change armor in on screen is DragonQuest VIII.

Anyone else with the PS3 version unable to see gloves or boots?

Gloves and boots show up on the PS3 version as well, everything does. Your helmet and gloves just disappear on the cutscenes so you can see your faces and hands if you need to make gestures or handle anything.

JRPG are more story driven. The essence of the game are the cutscenes more than gameplay. So the cutscenes will most likely be prerendered. Their clothes, i doubt, will change in battle, to be consistent with the cutscenes.

There better be some kind of mini-game. How do you go from the brilliant Blitzball of FFX to NOTHING in FFXII?

If the only side-missions in FFXIII are hunting pallette-swap monsters a la FFXII, then Square Enix really HAS gotten lazy.

I didn't care much for Blitzball either. In fact I was annoyed that it required so much play to get Wakkas ultimate weapon.

The card game in VIII was the most entertaining mini game to date in a Final Fantasy game.

BOTH Blitzball and the Triple Triad Card game were totally awesome. Granted, it took longer to get into Blitzball but once I did, it was SO much fun.

The Card game from VIII might still be the best, though.

This sounds awesome! I agree with godsman that hopefully the equiped armor/robes/clothes or accesories will in some way be shown visibly on screen.

Another tidbit floating around the web is that the main story alone will take 50+ hours!!! How great is that? But would we reallyexpect anything less??? I don't think so.

I refuse to buy a game with some sexed up tart on the front cover showing a bunch of unnecessary skin.

Now where did I put my copy of DOA:Beach Volleyball?

Anyway on to a more serious note, I would like to see them have Weapons in this game and what they will be like. And, I mean Weapons as in Emerald or Ruby and Ultimate and the like. Also, I would hope they are planning on adding some good in depth mini games as Arvis said. Maybe a return of a type of card game, which was not my favourite minigame was quite in depth when you got into it.

On the fence with this one since I have never played a Final Fantasy game before.

Fallout 3 was the first RPG type of game I played. I then bought Sacred 2, and am now playing Dragon Age.

I love the exploring, leveling up, customization, and choices in each of these games.

If Final Fantasy XIII is like this, consider me sold.

If you're just now getting into RPG's this isn't a title to be on the fence about. Go ahead and commit. I've played almost all of them, (the 12 main and several others) and while some of them weren't my favorite games, even those were well worth buying and playing (usually more than once).

I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you like a good story and strong characters, JRPGs always have much deeper stories and more complex characters than WRPGs. Also the battles are far more intense and exciting.

Nice. The whole weapons that can only be used by certain characters is going back to their roots. Its nice to see. I remember on the special edition dvd for FFXII they said FFXIII was to be the title that brought FF back to their roots. What with the whole crystal thing and what not. Weapon customization? soooo badass, no longer will I have to play through the gawd awful FFXII wishing my weapon had some sort of elemental or status effect. If I want a certain one, I'll put it on my weapon myself. *NODS*

All info on FF is welcome, but I'm a little disappointed because I hated never being able to find that last item in FFVIII to upgrade my weapon, it was a massive pain in the ass because you didn't know where to look for it. It was left up to fate whether you had it or not. So myweapons were always weak.
