Biggest PSN Download Ever Clocks In At 8-10GB
Those of you "in the know" have likely heard about Record of Agarest War, but perhaps you didn't know that when it arrives in North America, it will only be available as a digital download off the PSN.
That's hardly earth-shattering news but here's the kicker: according to Siliconera citing an Aksys administrator, this is going to be the single biggest downloadable game to date. And as a direct result, it's going to beg the question: just how far away are we from this seemingly inevitable switch to all-digital in the future? This is what we've heard about the Agarest War download:
"I asked around, and it looks like the final size is going to be somewhere around 8-10 gigs. It sounds like a lot, I know, but I’ve been downloading the debug ROMs at home to take the load off our office internet, and they only take a few hours–I usually start them when I leave for work, and they’re done by lunch. My internet connection is nothing special either–about 500 kb/s on a good day.
So there you have it. 8-10 gigs. We should a more solid number closer to release."
Now, if you still have a 20GB or 40GB machine (or even the old 60GB), this is ridiculously huge download. And the more you really think about it, the more you start to realize that many games could fit the 8-10GB margin...and publishers may want to take advantage sooner than you might think. The question is, are people really willing to wait for such a huge download? Is that something people want to do...? It'll be interesting to find out, that's for sure.

Sidenote; that is one provocative image. What is this game even about?

Releasing a title on physical media costs money. I am speculating the publisher/developer would rather not make that large of an investment on a new IP with the risk of development and production costs exceeding estimated profits.
Logical decision on their part, although potentially limiting their customer base due to bandwidth restrictions and hard drive space.
If the game receives well as a downloadable title, I would not be surprised if it gets released on Bluray down the line. At least the sequel (if one gets developed) should hit retail outlets.

If this title does well I would hope to see a slew of Japanese and perhaps even Korean titles that wouldn't normally get a localization due to the costs involved in re-dubbing. Most games are built with all text in specific files so that many languages are supported by the same game engine. This makes localization of the text in a game much easier if all you are trying to do is a simple translation. With such translation of the game's own subtitles and menus and other text the game may sell well enough to justify a sales niche and treatment as a download title. But that market may not be large enough to justify the cost of the total localization and re-dubbing of the game.
I don't think that BluRay publication of games like this is on the cards unless the downloadable titles start selling in enough numbers to justify the costs of production and re-dubbing in English.

if yakuza 3 was to mysteriously appear on the PSN network i would download it without any hesitation.
but thats the problem, the smallest PS3 game i have seen is 15GBs and thats virtual tennis think its called.
most PS3 games are roughly 20GBs so barely anyone is going to be able to download them. times not really a problem just leave it on over night, its bandwidth that would be the major issue.

As far as all digital media, nope. The market is determined by the consumer, not by wide-eyed executives who see increased profits by eliminating physical media. People aren't going to run out and buy new consoles with multi-terabyte hard drives, or spend an extra hundred to upgrade their current drive. And another hundred for an external drive to backup their current drive before they replace it. And deal with formatting stuff to Fat 32, and worry about all the other technical questions that come up when you start modifying a console. And they're not going to wait for hours on end for something to download when they could run down to the store and buy it in one-tenth the time, or give up their option of selling or trading in their games. Not to mention they'll never be able to get something on sale again, unless Sony decides to reduce the price after the game has been out for a while. Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Some retailer bought 5,000 copies and now they can't get rid of them? Ha, forget about it.

The picture gets worse for folks further away from the CO than me and on cable, congested neighborhoods could lead so longer download times too. The networking technology for better speed is there, but it costs a medium sized fortune to upgrade the entire nation, so it'll take time.
