PSXE Poll Update: Next To Drake, Killzone 2 Is Top Dog
We can always count on our readers to make the correct choice. Oh, I know it's all personal preference when it comes to polls like this - well, it's some opinion, anyway - so there's really no "correct" answer, but...okay, there is.
We asked you to tell us what the best game of 2009 was, with the exception of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which is the easy choice for just about anyone who has played that unbelievable masterpiece. And as far as we're concerned, the FPS that remains unparalleled this generation is an easy pick for second place; Killzone 2 is just an amazing accomplishment the whole way 'round. Thankfully, most of you agree, although there was - not surprisingly - a strong Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 contingency, and a great many prefer the fantastic Assassin's Creed II. Perhaps what I found most interesting is the respectable showing Demon's Souls had in this poll; I get the distinct feeling that it would barely register at other sites, but I know for a fact that we have an abnormal number of RPG fans around here. But trust me, that's a good thing, and I don't have to explain why. ;)
So anyway, this week's poll addresses a significant issue for the holiday season: Sony's marketing campaign for the PS3. As most of you know, they've really pushed the system hard over the past few months and now that we're in December, we're wondering if you would call their ad blitz a success. Do you see more people interested in the PS3? Do you see an appropriate number of TV ads? Do you see retailers more interested in recommending the PS3 to customers? Has Blu-Ray proven to be a big enough draw? Take any and all factors into consideration and then vote away.

I see at least (usually more) one commercial every day on tv and I'm seeing the ps3 all over the Internet. I went to YouTube recently to watch some videos my friends recommended and I saw a big fat ps3 ad dead center and in your face. That's pretty huge in itself.

who wants to bet the VGA's will announce MW2 as game of the year over uncharted?
i personally hate MW2, it has no substance, its boring shooter where u run around in circles shooting each other without any teamwork or strategy. but meh
only my opinion.
Uncharted 2 deserves GotY
i do hope killzone wins something but we all know MW2 will take it
ahh well lets sit back and wait for the VGAs

They've done an amazing job
Just wish they'd market the games a bit better
Ratchet and Clank should have its own style of marketing. Shouldn't truly be marketed as a mature game. Should be marketed as both a fantasy game and a mature game (since it is both). So a Disney treatment (as much as I hate Disney, they really give you that fantasy feel) would be great
Oh, Demon's Souls is an amazing game. Truly one of the most compelling games I've played this gen.

assassins creed 2 > uncharted 2.
BLACK > killzone 2.
any day of the week.
uncharted 2 and killzone 2 are the 2 most over rated games in existence.
closely followed by GTAIV and halo 3.
i really dont see whats the big deal, especially with KZ2 it was so repetitive.
sit behind cover, pop, shoot move forward and occasionally change cover to avoid grenade.
thats it, rinse and repeat.
how about some enemy variety here please?
every enemy is the same, theres nothing forcing you to think or change your gameplay style.
uncharted 2 i can slightly understand because it had some kick a$$ action scenes but thats about it.
as far as im concerned BLACK is the best shooter ever released, and its going to be a long, long, long, long, long time till something comes in and replaces that.

Also, pretty much _all_ 'war-style' shooters kinda have to have a lot of cover and shooting - it's like criticising a racing game for making you drive all the time... The difference with KZ2 is that the AI combined with immersive graphics and sound really made it a top-notch experience and, in my opinion, the best FPS released on a Playstation console (I don't own a 360 or Wii, and wouldn't lower myself to playing a point-and-click shooting adventure on the PC).

Congrats for describing the strategy of every fps ever made; next you're going to tell us that there's fighting in fighting games.I could be wrong on this but I think you have confused black with half-life 2.

I WANT CHANGE!
i thought i expressed that quite clearly.
KZ2 is very good at copying and implementing the features other FPS have.
BUT THATS NOT WHAT I WANT.
as i said, and ill say it again i want another goldeneye.
that game came out and made everyone sh*t their pants because it changed so much in the genre.
WTF?
what do graphics have to do with gameplay?
just because it has fantastic graphics its automatically a fantastic game?
no, im sorry graphics are the LEAST! important aspect to games.
and ben how is KZ2 not repetitive?
every level is exactly the same.
take cover pop shoot move forward and occasionally move to a different cover to avoid incoming grenade.
thats it, thats the whole game.
how is that not repetitive?
every level is a repeat of the previous level.
i wanted KZ2 to be like gears 2.
every level feels different and you have different enemies.
you have the tickers which will come and force you out of cover because they will explode if they get to close.
than you have the enemies swinging grenades so you have to leave cover otherwise they will explode.
there are things, elements forcing you to re think your strategy.
you have to think in that game, you cant cover camp.
thats what i wanted from KZ2.
but hey, maybe KZ3 will bring that but i doubt it.
considering the flock thats following it they will probably just add some new skins, as in different environments and theres your "new game"
enjoy!
i know im sounding like a reviewer from IGN, but im sick of playing the same crap over and over again.
the shooter genre is so over saturated that i need something new.
something different.
I WANT, NO, I NEED CHANGE!

K2 was repetitive, it was just a jazzed up usual FPS and i can't believe people voted it but, then again, K2 was a victim of the hype machine and that's enough to blind folks.
U2, yeah, again, incredibly overrated in terms of the gameplay. It was almost hilarious. I mean, you die and then start back a second before you die...where the hell is the challenge there? I'm climbing things by just repeatedly pressing X, breezed through it in 2 days, no challenge...Its nothing new and again a victim of the hype machine. Having the best graphics and top motion capture and voice acting (albeit with a terrible script) isn't enough.
It was Demon's Souls the entire way. We hadn't seen anything like that in such a long time. It rekindled people's passion for gaming!

And if you could not find anything to like about KZ2, as said before, can't you leave it at not being a fan of the genre.
And although KZ2 had a lot of hype about it, U2 was not even on the radar up until a month before release.
Both games have a level of immersion unattained previously by any other game, including Gears.

For it to be like Mirror's Edge?
Nothing is original imo, Killzone 2 just took everything to the next level instead of being original.
Same goes for Gears because it did what Killswitch couldn't.
And then comes Uncharted which put puzzle, platforming and shooting together.
Like Axe99 said, what you said is like saying there's only driving in racing games.
So you expect in Gran Turismo 6 you can get off your car and shoot the spectators like you did in GTA?
Lotusflow3r
Monday, December 07, 2009 @ 11:13:08 AM
but, that was the point im making. He's made it clearer for me.
As i said, they are just jazzed up affairs whilst there were true innovations this year that worked and provided better and newer experiences overall and deserve better success and recognition.
The problem is just that people can't take change all too often. If K2 completely innovated and FPS wasn't a worn out genre this year and did more than just take FPS games a tad higher, then by all means make it game of the year...but it didn't, it's just an extension of whats all over this gen.

i want a game to come out and bring something i have never seen before.
i want another golden eye or a new half life or a new BLACK.
those came out and raised the bar, added something to the genre that has now become essential to the genre.
i guess you can blame both the hype train, sony and GG themselves.
excuse me for expecting something special when sony touted it as the second coming of christ at E3 when they first announced it.
than GG spend 5 years making the game, when that much time and effort are put into something i expect it to be mind blowing.
and then you had the media doing the same, tooting their horns like we had a new goldeneye on our hands.
as i have said many times i wish the game journalists would just shut up and preview games.
you look at all of my favorite games of late. 99.99% of them were low hype games.
inFAMOUS.
assassins creed 2.
batman AA.
rainbow six vegas.
xmen origins wolverine.
ninja gaiden 2
ghost recon advanced war fighter 2.
BLACK i had no idea was coming out, i went into EB one day and saw it, picked it up and was cleaning my house for the next 3 weeks.
all games that had very little hype, and all games where reviewers were saying this could be good but it could also be a disaster.
so KZ2 was always set for disaster, the only way they could of avoided that is bring something new to the genre.
but they dident.
when a crappy no name game like rouge warrior comes in and does what KZ2 did, people would be sh*tting their pants because people were not expecting it to be any good.
but when a game like KZ2 comes out you since its suppose to be a "halo killer" you expect it to bring something new, to raise the bar for FPS.
you expect it to be the standard, the bar all FPS after it should be aiming for.
as far as im concerned the bar for FPS is still BLACK and probably always will be because criterion dont look interested in doing another black.
and by the time half life 2 epp 3 is out my great gran kids will have great gran kids.

To be honest, I love them all to bits but the only one that has comes closest to wrecking my marriage and making me lose my job is Assassins Creed 2.
The others I would play for a couple of hours then go to bed happy after a good dose of adrenaline.
Assassins Creed 2 is different. 5 hours, six hours. Oh my God! It was like the kids, the house, the wife, the job, all didn't matter.
I'm 20 hours in and I just want more. The addictive nature is so much higher than the others. I haven't been this drawn in by a game for a good number of years!
I'm going to have to finish the main story quick and then trade the game in.
Sorry, it's just too dangerous!
Hence, I voted for Assassins Creed 2 (the widow maker).

But the Sony advertisements are still not seen here in NZ so it's not that much better.
I can see it's working great for US and maybe EU.
BUT people are starting to buy Xbox 360's here.
I've seen some price cut PS3's in TV ads though. Goooood.

As far as ____________, play KZ2 on elite and tell me its not the most intense, hard fought battle you have ever played. I was gripping my controller twice as hard and was mentally exhausted after getting through it. I'm really starting to think you have no idea WTF you are talking about. The enemies aren't diverse enough? That's like saying a WWII game doesn't have enough diversity because they are always fighting the same soldiers. It's a war game, genius.
FYI, there are over 13 different Helghast. You can't stay in cover too long because you will get flanked quickly. They also continue to push up on you which keeps the battle extremely intense.
I got to hand it to you though, you posted that utter garbage and got a ton of responses. Congratulations on being the schmuck of the comments section.
My choice was Demon's Souls. No game immersed me in it's universe like that one since Oblivion.
After having finished UC2, I still would have voted for DS. But, I understand why you did the poll the way you did. UC2 would have won hands down and we wouldn't have had a good representation of the second place game.

that means you have to fight the same enemies from level 1 to level 20?
i dont know about you but i need to feel the game change, ramp up as i pass through it.
if im doing the same sh*t on level 20 as i was on level 1 to me its not a good game.
simple as that.
how hard is it, to put new enemies in every 3 levels or so?
seriously, not rocket science.
and the difficulty in KZ2 is cheap.
instead of making it harder because your fighting enemies who are smarter or tougher its harder because they have rocket launchers.
like the final battle.
you and ricco with a sniper or machiene gun.
V 10 enemies with rocket launchers.
who do you thinks going to win?
that level would be piss easy if you had a rocket launcher to get them, or if you could take one out while the other was reloading.
but you cant.
every single time i pop out and kill one, the other blows me up with his launcher.
