Time Names Modern Warfare 2 The Best Game Of 2009

Last year, we knocked Time Magazine for their Top 10 Video Games list and this year...well, we're gonna do it again.

Time has named Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as the best game of 2009, which is certain to spark some controversy. There are those who say they only did it because it's also the most popular title, but if you read their description of the game, I'm leaning in another direction:

"Video games have something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you hop around the globe, chasing the front lines of globalized, asymmetrical combat, where not everybody wears uniforms, war isn't always declared, and the battlefield isn't clearly marked — battles rage through suburbs, airports and people's living rooms."

In reading between the lines, it seems like - surprise, surprise - Time wants to make a "statement" concerning the politics of Modern Warfare 2; i.e., the standard far-left media slant that embraces the "war touches us all" and "you never know who your enemy really is" ideals. Game-wise, I think we all know that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a lot better than #10 of 2009, and I think we all know that Time doesn't feel like employing real gamers. At this point, I'm thinking we should just turn our hopes to the Spike TV Awards, where the nominations are almost realistic.

The mainstream media hasn't caught up quite yet. I know Hollywood can't keep their big yaps shut (since when is anyone over there smart enough to lecture on world topics?) but let's not have it in gaming. Please?

Kinda predictable. With MW2, people will recognize it and say "oh yeah, that game". Uncharted 2 hasn't seen sales anywhere near that of MW2, even just among PS3 users.

I've played both these games, and I enjoyed both to great extent. Although due to the MP, I've been playing MW2 much longer now.

I don't have that much of a problem with MW2 being #1 with all things considered, but Uncharted 2 at 10 is a crime.

U2 isn't as addicting as a Call of Duty game but it's still great. I won't disagree though. It does feel as if it needs more. I still play it often though.

Have you played UC2 online? You can unload a clip into a guy's head and he doesn't die. Why do you think ND upped the damage in the multiplayer this past weekend? Or were you not there for that? They are getting a lot of complaints and those complaints are justified. ND is looking into improving the mp aspect of their top game and actually listening to their customers. I say good on them.

The last time I played Uncharted 2 online, you couldn't even chose what type of online mode you'd get to play.....very bizarre.

Anyways, ND is money. They'll get MP right someday.

this is the first time ND is making a game with online mp and the mp is really great, infinity ward has been making mp games for years and still their games are full of glitches and bugs even if they use the same multiplayer on every cod game they still don't fix the glitches,the game is still unbalanced and there are many guns and attachments that are overpowered for example akimbo 1887s,thermal scope, and heart beat sensor the game is not even fun anymore with all the campers and glitchers

i seriously doubt they played any of these games. Maybe they have the iphone and spend hours on the train and SWARM was one of their favorites. Or maybe their kids are addicted to Scribble Naughts and then they took the rest of the games by sales/popularity.

Assbackwards like all of their reporting. This doesn't surprise me. They are rarley accurate with anything they report. These people live in an alternate reality and see the world through a screwed point of view in just about all walks in life.

Lol Mackid I know. In my opinion U2 is GOTY and MW2 comes in second. I dont see how Killzone 2 is better than MW2. MW2 is just close to the real thing, tons and tons of weapons. The way you get delivered care packages, call in airstrikes, helicopters etc etc is just tight!

I really base it on the amount of time I get out of each game. I already have played MW2 more than U2. I have both platinum's, but the MP is really where the time killing is at. As great as U2 and KZ are online it doesn't match up to that COD formula.

I agree with mackid. I spent 13hrs on U2 but already have logged 17 on MW2 7hr campaign, 8hrs online, and 2hrs ops.

But Uncharted 2 is GOTY, hands down. Sales dont make a game better, they only do this to play it safe obviously if more people have the game the less backlash they hear. Look at GTAIV winning last year.

i think its kinda funny that you guys are acting like its a big deal. its not like Time is rating video games through the eye of a gamer. do you think they give two sh*ts about the game aspects that you all look for? hell no. its not like they are an authority on games. its not at all surprising.
a) MW2 does have a very well done story to anyone willing to follow every complexity that occurs in the campaign. besides, it did explore areas that most people are afraid to touch due to fear of the media and general public BS reactions. and this story is unfortunately not all that far-fetched.
b) of course Time will give MW2 extremely high regards after all of the hype and all of the sales numbers. it did have the advantage of multiplat sales and 360 players who, not getting to play epic games like UC2, think MW2 is the most amazing game of all time...
c) UC2 is PS3 exlusive, and as we all know, PS3 is still a minority out there.
d) again, Time doesn't give two sh*ts about the things that make UC2 so amazing. their criteria for best game is obviously going to be completely different from that of anyone here
e) do we really give two sh*ts about Time magazine and their opinion on video games? shoot, Ben might as well comprise a list of top ten farm innovations of 2009

According to the linked page (which is all I viewed), they are doing top 10 lists of virtually everything, so even Time are presenting it as more of a lark than a serious analysis.

But their while idea is stupid; if you're going to rank games (or whatever), do it right OR DON'T DO IT AT ALL.

Actually, i will add, games can make a statement about things and they have done, some way better than any cash cow could everr do it....Remember MGS?
Then you can take the mega artistic statement and look at Team Ico games....but that takes intelligence to read....so TIME would be stuck there so, they take something obvious and is an echo of 1000s of similar "statements" that came before it on that topic of illusion.

And to further add, this is, what, 5 other people's (TIME) opinion? That 5 VS the rest of us....

Well on the brightside, Metacritic (which I trust a lot more on this subject) has released their GotY list with Uncharted 2 at the top, and announced the PS3 of the platform as the year. Who cares about Time's hype list when we have some solid reviews to go off of?

all these modern shooters, war games, if they stop making even a single more title for the entire industry, i believe many gamers like me, will not miss or think of them for a bit, let alone become the best games of the year.

such is the stringent reality of the essense of these games -- the least favorable genre with an unfortunate popularity and wrong-headed direction of the game industry.

many 10 or 20 years ago, people will ask and laugh rediculously, (when gaming was in its golden era), whats FPS ?

They obviously used the sales figures, no surprise. Same way the PS3 is platform of the year just by sales. Metacritic won't care if PS3's Bayonetta is inferior to 360's, its sales they looking at.

Obviously, TIME Magazine does not know what "TIME IT IS"! That's it. I'm canceling my subscription. Not a paid subscription mind you. Got is free via a survey. Seriously though. When I do read it I will actually take a moment to email them regarding the futile attempt to create a best video games list. The mag is just a few steps ahead of a gossip column as far as I am concerned but many people do not see it this way. Its high time Video Game Entertainment gets the respect that it deserves. If a picture is worth a thousand words. And a painting is art. Music.. Dialogue.. At these things put together. Can someone tell me, When will the amount of time an effort taken to create a video game equate to a respectable medium?

how about we get some people with actual balls to actually throw an opinion against COD MW2 instead of kissing major butt. Let's hope we see some cojones at the spike TV awards, at least Interactive Achievement awards are generally spot on, so i think.

For me, Game Of The Year is either Uncharted 2 or Assassin's Creed 2. Killzone for best FPS. I had Modern Warfare 2, bought it for the campaign, beat it, sold it. I don't like playing FPS that use POWER UPS, ruins the fun. If I shoot you in the back 5 times you should DIE, not turn around and have a chance to shoot back. I prefer realism, preferbly the Rainbow Six games.

This list blows harder than Mega-Maid.

FTA: "the struggle between good and evil rages on with Batman: Arkham Asylum, which picks up right where Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight left off."

Batman: AA is a fantastic game, but it has NOTHING to do with any film, and IMO is so much better for it.

DJ Hero at #3? I haven't played the game, I'm sure it's fun, but #3, really???

They make a good case for Uncharted 2, especially that jab at the last Indy movie, but 2 spots below Halo 3: the spinoff?

Maybe they should have spent a little more TIME on this list.

1) Modern Warfare 2 because it's the best game of 2009

2) Batman AA because it's the highest rated superhero game ever

3) DJ Hero because it's innovative

4) Borderlands because it rivals Fallout 3

5) ...........

8) Halo ODST because it's HALO so it have to make the list!

9) Assasin's Creed II because it looked the same

10) Uncharted 2 because it lack originality

No 1 starting from the bottom is more like it.

Oh wow cool, they left out Left 4 Dead 2, Street Fighter IV, inFamous, Killzone 2.

I wouldn't be surprise if MW2 were to win many GOTY award like MGS4 did.
It's just the name CoD that get the score, not the game and I'm not buying a CoD game unless they make the single player longer.

and we are surprised why?
ive never agreed with GOTY awards, never.
07 went to oblivion or MW.
08 went to left for dead or GTAIV.
09 will go to MW2 or L4D2.
none of the games that deserve the title ever do.
id put exclusive of the year as inFAMOUS.
and multiplat of the year as assassins creed 2, with honorable mention of batman AA.
batman was good, but assassins creed 2 was much better.
i was expecting nothing out of batman and got allot so that was impressive.
but i was expecting everything out of assassins creed 2 and it still somehow managed to blow me out of the water.
so that was more impressive.
come to think of it, AC2 is the only game this year that has exceed my expectations.
o, that and infamous.

Dude, no, just no. Ok? Infamous should get game of the year period. not best exclusive, just game of the year. I haven't played U2 but it sounds as though it's the fantastic gfx that has everyone struck. Gfx are part of the immersiveness (word? lol) of a game but it takes alot more than gfx to deserve GOTY. Now remember I'm basing this on what I've read from many of you. The story is probably way better than U1. But meh we'll see.

I'm not mad at Infinity Ward. No matter how much I hate to love MW2...I understand why it deserves GOTY although it is pretty much an exact replica of MW1 with some new elements like: new guns, and a new but same short ass story. Uncharted 2 has shown us so much. It was greatness. The best visual experience I have ever had in a game before. Not to mention very enjoyable (We can thank Chloe for that one). However, it like some people have said, lacked originality. Although its competitor, MW2, also lacked originality, it was expected of it. In order for MW2 to maintain its former glory it needed to be clone with slightly disfigured features. And that's exactly what it became. I applaud Naughty Dog. But the Modern Warfare franchise is delicately molded by greedy GOTY rendering geniuses. Visual Game of the Year goes to UC2 easily. But most Addictive Game of the Year goes undoubtedly to MW2.

Last time i thought about Time my country had a lovely front issue on our youth issues, which was just pathetic considering the murders that go on in the US all the time, not bashing btw. Modern Warfare 2 is probally the worst game i bought that has come out this year, a disgrace to COD4. Uncharted 2 is HANDS-DOWN GOTY.

simply put MW2 is GOY in sales. Magazines like TIME will make that GOY every year, despite a games technical achievements.

I will sau this, im enjoying MW2 a lot and ive more than got my moneys worth out of it! But compared to Uncharted 2 well... Nothing really comes close!
