Sony's Holiday Gift: "Perfect Additions To Your PS3"
When one is a PlayStation 3 owner, it can be awfully difficult to select a proper set of accessories and games. After all, there's just so much to choose from.
Ah, but here's Sony to the rescue; it even says, in big red letters, "Perfect Additions To Your PS3 System." This appears to be the first of many such packages you will find on store shelves in the future, and they're destined to be big draws for the holiday season. If you skip on over to Amazon, you will find this attractive little bundle that should appeal to all new PS3 owners. For only $58.99, you receive a Dual Shock 3 controller and a copy of one of the first top-notch exclusive titles, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Essentially, because controllers typically retail for $54.99, you're nabbing the game for a mere $4. As a frame of reference, Drake's Fortune is a Greatest Hit and normally holds a new price tag of $29.99 so this is a solid deal. Stay on the lookout for more of these special packages, which hopefully don't exist for the sole purpose of the holiday season.
They may also want to try connecting a game like Killzone 2 or SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation to the Sony Bluetooth headset, or something like that. And I'm sure you all have some ideas, too...

This is what I found over the various sites I researched.....
The majority of the older PS3's have YLOD'ed from overheating.
The PS3(& yes, the 360 too)used a different kind of solder that is now known to be seriously deficient, which has caused a breakdown in this deficient solder. IE: all the reflow repair work now being done to make up most of the refurbs.
And that IS the main reason you "SHOULD NEVER" stand any older PS3's in a upright position because the melting solder also runs right down that upright board & fries everything else too along with it.
Some secondary causes were disc drives failing.
A few other miscellaneous causes were failures of the fan or power supply
And for those that say that their older PS3's have never YLOD'ed, that's great & I'm totally happy for you, but just remember one thing, that just because the YLOD hasn't hit you, doesn't mean that it can't or won't either(and I hope it never does).
FYI, I've already had to replace my 60gigger due to the disc drive starting to go bad(grinding when inserting or ejecting a disc, & not acknowleging that I inserted a disc into it 3/4's of the time).
Thank goodness I was smart enough to buy a 1 year extended warranty with it from Gamestop.
Anyway, here's a un-official list of failed PS3's on Playstation's own board, & it seems that it's mostly the older 60 giggers, with a small sprinkling of other GB models...

<<<<<Maybe you should try taking better care of your PS3.....just a thought.>>>>>
WTF are you smoking????
Since the original PS3's have cost us $600 or even more, I find it hard to believe that most people wouldn't also take excellent care of their PS3's too.
And they're still getting YLOD's, and through no fault of their own.
So I call "bullsh*t" on that worthless statement(and we want some change back from your 2 cent sentence).......just a thought bouncing right back at'cha!

I myself would probably send it back to sony to repair. Pay the $$
There is sites like ps-pros.com that offer to fix systems as well.

On Black Friday Amazon had UC1 for $14.99 and Radio Shack had the DS3 for $29.99.
I just bought inFamous for $25.77 today on Amazon's Lightning Deal. AC2 is only $39.99 on Amazon also.
Sorry if it sounds like I am a salesman. I wish Ben would add a section on the side where we could list all the deals that we come across.

Yeah, I guess you're right but I'm not so sure that our mods have the time to hunt all the deals down.
And if it's only imput'ed by the readers ourselves, unfortunately I think that there are still that 1% that won't put em in there where it's supposed to go, & they'll just will stick em in to any other threads they want due to laziness or whatever(the forum also bares this out too).

Nahh just useful 411 on the dealio.
Anyways, I would never jinx your sh*t, unless you kept forgetting to flush.
@SnipeySnake,
I meant DO NOT leave it in a standing up position due to the chance of solder melt.
Always lay it nice & flat so that if the solder does happen to melt a bit, it will only puddle in that one spot, and won't run down the motherboard causing a more damage from standing straight up.
(FYI, this same info above goes for the 360 owners too)
@Fane1024
Question: Do I really care what anyone thinks about me?
ANSWER: There's not a damned thing anyone can do about it anyway, so........"F*CK NO!!!!!!

From your comment, it seems you missed my point. I just meant that you seem to be posting replies to the next post down from the one to which you are actually responding. And it was meant as a joke.
The last thing I would do is take a cheap shot at the head of a motorcycle club. ;)

You name it; R2, U2, MW2, FP. It's ridiculously rare when I meet another person with a headset (let alone a good one like the PS3 b/t) I know I'm not alone either because the other person invariably says something like: "Wow! Somebody with a PS3 AND a headset, holy crap, you're the first person I've talked to in X months!"

When you use "CANNED AIR", you're actually blowing that same dust you're seeing, right back "INTO" your console, & also all throughout it's inner workings as well.
Also, a jet of powerful "COMPRESSOR AIR" can cause problems to the laser too, maybe even setting it out of it's alignment by a hair till it decides to fail because of it.(I can't prove it but it only makes sense that either of these 2 scenario's were probably one of those very same reasons that some have gotten their disc drive failures).
What you actually need to do to suck the dust "OUT & AWAY" from your consoles!!!!!!!!
So if you want to clean the vents the correct way, use the brush attachment on your vacuum, or a cheap small hand vac(just make sure it's powerful enough) which will loosen the dust and at the same time your vac will suck it away.
(And besides, even if that weren't the caseg.......
isn't your "PRECIOUS" worth a few added moments of your affections?????)

whats the point of that extra controller?
there is barely any games that support offline co-op bar sport games.
i remember ever since killzone came out every time my cuz game over we would spend days playing nothing buy multiplayer in killzone.
just me and him against the bots.
he was so excited to come over and try out killzone 2 with me and continue the tradition, but surprise surprise KZ2 does not have split screen MP.
same with resistance fall of man, me and my cuz finished that game like 20 times and again he was dying to come over and continue the traditions with resistance 2.
than was so disappointed when he found out we cant.
what is the point of a system being able to have 7 controllers connected at one time when 99.9999999999999% of the games dont support 2 let alone 7.
thats one of the things sony needs to pull their finger out and get organized on.
it only does everything except PS2 BC and co-operative games.
