PSN Newsletter Confirms FFVIII Is "Coming Soon"

Final Fantasy VIII is maybe the only entry in the legendary role-playing franchise that exists on a love/hate relationship with the fans. You either think it's one of the best entries...or one of the worst.

Either way, it's finally scheduled to come to the PlayStation Network in digital download form so you can play it on your PS3 or PSP. This one has already been on the Japanese Store since September and we know it'll be hitting Europe at some point but due to some sort of testing issue, we still don't have a launch date. On the other hand, US gamers can rejoice because SCEA was good enough to clue us in via their latest PSN newsletter. You may have received it as well and if so, you probably didn't miss it: right there under the "Coming Soon" section, you will find the PS1 classic, Final Fantasy VIII (it's right below "District 9"). We don't have a solidified date but just to know it's on the way is a plus and besides, if it's in the "Coming Soon" part of the newsletter, it can't be far off. Typically, products that appear in that section of the newsletter are only a few weeks off, so keep an eye on the PSN for the rest of this month. If you never had the opportunity to play FFVIII back in the good ol' PS1 days, you really don't know what you're missing. Although it was a little unorthodox as far as FFs go, it still boasted one of the best storylines ever.

And am I the only one that says this game still features one of the best intros and endings in history? I hope not.

FFVIII is the only game which I played multiple times but could never finish. Not because it's a horrible game, but I love the story so much, I just couldn't bear to watch it end. I still don't know what happens afterwards....

The ending remains one of the best ever. It's just awesome.

I promise you it's not sad. It's very, very rewarding...

I loved final fantasy VIII. i was thinking of replaying it again since i have the old ps1 disc. I have VII, VIII, and IX but havent gone back to play yet because of the recent games. I have the 60gb ps3 and was wondering if the disc swap thing works well with the ps3. because with the ps1 you just open the lid but since its running on the ps3, i want to know if theres any difference.

The intro was great, I'm a little fuzzy on the ending....except for the hand-held camera thing.

What this game did have was the card game...that was an awesome mini-game. The hunts/marks are still the most fun side-quests...but this mini-game was great. I don't want to start anything, but it was much better than blitzball - but I only say that cause I sucked at blitzball.

Not my favorite but not the worst. If it's listed with District 9 under coming soon me thinks it will be here before the end of the year. District 9 ships Dec 29th from Amazon I think.

It's about time too. I have been wanting to replay this one.

You can use remote play to play the PS1 disc. It works on my 60gb. Havent tried on my slim. I just replayed final fantasy ix on my psp using remote play. The button inputs lag though and it doesn't look as good as having te digital copy on your memory stick in the psp.

FF8 was boring to me. Oh look. Let us have teenagers saving the world because adults are stupid. HEY let us have kids who dress up like 90210 losers fight and save the world! HEEEEEEY! Lets have it where a guy with a GUN SWORD (LOL) kills hundreds of soldiers while they all unload on him!!! YAAAAY!!!!

Sigh.

BTW. I DID love the opening scene where they dance. I thought she was rather cute the way she made him dance with her. Reminded me of a girl I dated LONG AGO in me old youth.

Maybe I will get this game and finally beat it. Probably not.

Modern Warfare for me. I like blowing up stuff. Heh.

Then when FF8 came out, I say the commerical for it and the FMVs were mesmerizing. I rode my bike to the Blockbuster up the street to rent it. There was one copy left. I took it home and was hooked on FFs ever since.

Still have my original copy and it works great, although the discs don't stay in the case so well, a couple of them kinda fall out when you open it up.

Beating Omega Weapon is still the most awesome thing I've ever done in a FF game. :D

Using a combination of certain skills (Defend, Revive) and then just Lionhearting him as many times as you can seemed to be the best way. Hoping for Selphie to get a The End is a waste of time.

I remember I beat Omega weapon 2st try. The 1st try, He did some attack that did 9999 damage to all my characters. So I trained hard on that island that had all the hard monsters on it. I got all my characters pass lvl 95 (expect for selphie), bought a lot of x-potions, fought the monster for about 10-15 minutes. I barely won. But it was one of the most rewarding moments I had in gaming. Didn't have the same luck on FF7 or FF9, though. Never could beat that Emerald Weapon or Ozma.

I played this on my PC and I love it, but as time goes on I realized FFVIII is different from most RPG.

That it doesn't have MP and it's not about level grinding if you're stuck.

I pretty much use GF attack 95% of the time though since it's the strongest and it cost nothing, not to mention you're being protected while summoning.

I wonder when will we see another FF that allows you to summon GF/Eidolon/Aeon without limit?

how is enemies match your level a con? doesnt that make the game more challenging? I would rather have stonger opponents rather than weak ass ones with every random encounter. Well, i guess i can see it being a problem if you're just level grinding but having a strong enemy kinda makes if fun for me.

I think they did that so there would hardly be any grinding. The closest thing to grinding is spending some extra time drawing out spells from enemies, but I never had a problem with that.

I also agree as the best ff of its time, loved the lion heart, but far as i kno alot of pple get stuck on the 4th disk and cant beat it or give up seems to be the reason everyone dont finish it. right???? But i beat it, i wasnt able to beat all monsters on the 4th disk tho.

this is the best FF game, and 2nd best is FF10, followed by ff4. great news. and Squall Rinoa couple is the best FF couple imo.

I agree!!! It still has the best opening and ending sequence in a game. It still has the best combat in all FF (Although, FFXIII is looking to really impress in combat). I love the limit breaks. This is really the best FF game there is. And the story is really touching. I've been waiting for this to arrive PSN. I hope Legend of Legaia, and Xenogears follow. I so love having "Ra-Serus". :D

Final Fantasy VIII is my second favorite game in the series... awesome characters and combat system...dont understand why ppl hated FFVIII and loved FFIX, when clearly FFIX was the weakest one outta the whole series... I mean it was good but compared to all the other Final Fantasies i played at the time, it was the worst one

FFVIII was always my favorite. Don't get me wrong, FFVII is great, but I actually played FFVII first.

Gonna get it when it get's here...

I won't be picking it up I don't think. I don't have a PSP so it's not like I can bring the game with me. But I still have my old PS1 disks. Guess I'll be stuck in front of the TV this winter break. ^_^;

It was a great FF, but like a few others, I couldn't bear the finish the game! Not because I hated it, but because it was so good, I didn't want it to end. ><; Maybe I'll finish it this time around.

FFVIII was, and remains, my favorite FF. Sure, VII had an impressive storyline... but VIII caught my attention just a little better. I own it on the PSone, but I imagine I'll buy it on the PSN regardless. Very excited.

Final Fantasy VIII was available on the Japanese PSN for months now. They even decked out their PSN with Final Fantasy VIII, complete with Galbadia Garden in the background. The download page had Rinoa falling into Squalls arms. The American PSN probably wont do anything for it, lol. Lazy bastards.
