Heavy Rain: Playable Demo, Future Episodes Confirmed
We know a lot of you are looking forward to Heavy Rain and we've got good news: despite the branching storylines contributing to the longevity of the experience, Quantic Dream will give you more reasons to keep the game.
In other words, no trading it in once you complete it. According to what executive producer Guillaume de Fondaumiere told Joystiq, more episodes will be on the way after the game launches in February. But first of all, Fondaumiere talks about the difficulty of promoting a game such as this, simply because "it's difficult for people to understand what it is unless they experience it." This is why the developers plan to give the audience a playable demo at some point, so they can "see and experience for themselves how different and unique this experience is." And is he worried about the possibility that a demo might show the unconventional gameplay to a host of unsatisfied gamers? Nope. He says the control scheme is "quite intuitive" and he's "not too concerned" about the reception. As for his final words:
"Buy the game, don't sell it. Keep it to yourself. You'll need it to continue and experience more episodes in the months following the launch of the game."
That's a plenty good indication that Quantic is already working on DLC, which at this point, may be ready to go not long after the game's release. We're so psyched about this game, it's hard to put it into words...but let's just say that we honestly hope the market will permit such an innovative title to succeed. If that is to happen, some gamers who aren't totally convinced will just have to take a chance. Do everyone a favor and at least play that demo when it comes out!

What the hell's up with that? Unless there is some storage issues that kinda stuff should be added to the game -before- release. I mean come on. DLC is something they should be thinking about months after release.

And I'm particularly excited to hear that Quantic Dream will be taking advantage of downloadable content capabilities, since they'll surely utilize it to expound plot and further character development (which has been an oft missed opportunity thus far).

Am I the only one that thinks this looks like a dull walking/talking simulator? It seems the developers would be more interested in making a movie than an actual game with gameplay. And the box cover is basically folder paper!.....zzzzzzzzzzz....I don't know, man.
I love all kinds of games, so I hope I'm wrong. But I fear the people who are a little disappointed over UC2 sales, are gonna have to break out the Prozac to get over this one.

All joking aside though you are right. The industry screams for innovation and then something wholly different hits the radar and people are whining about it. I mean it's like people are basically saying, "We want innovative games that challenge the way we think about games but we don't want them to branch out too far from what we like, well actually we just want some FPS games that have better guns and graphics and an innovative cover system."

as for all ppl who don't know what to expect from this game, my recommendation is, go play fahrenheit(indigo prophecy).. it should be like that.. minus some superficial beings and weird qte action sequences. this time around they are really doing it good.

I can't wait for Heavy Rain, I just hope Sony advertises the hell out of it so people are actually aware of it's existance. I have a bad feeling the reviews will be rather mixed. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love it (never played IP)
but I'm also pretty sure some people are just gonna hate it. Kinda like SotC with some people.

While buying this game, i know that it is extremely innovative, and thanks to the article on this site, we also know that "innovation can fail" ;)
Anyway, the point is, those who buy this game should approach it with an open mind. I am pretty sure it'll be generally fantastic, but there might also be a few odd balls here and there. Quite a few things in the game would be different to anything we've seen or played before. And some of these features might be frustrating or not quite how we expected them to be, coz its never been tried before.
Just allow this game the freedom to frustrate you from time to time - it'll be worth it for the sheer innovation it brings to the table.

That's pretty offensive to films. Suggesting that a films depth is often shallow when compared to a novel is itself a shallow comment. Yes the global tyrant of Hollywood produces the biggest films but also by far the worst films. Look at any film by Godard, Bunuel, Lynch, early Scorsese and tell me these films are not art and "deep". The fact is modern video games have replaced 1920's pulp. There are nameless, spewing out the same experiences with different settings.
It is true that video games can offer more, and in some circumstances art can be pulled from pulp. In pulp fiction "Do androids dream of electric sheep" created Blade Runner and in Video Games we have the likes of Final Fantasy 7. However one advantage I think video games have over films is their length, and that intern puts them in a category similar to a television show. If television shows can create the modern American novel (The Wire) comparable to Dickens and Dostoevsky then video games can equally fill this criteria.
This is what I want from Video Games and perhaps Heavy Rain is another stepping stone toward this goal. Games have the length of a novel and have the freedom of direction like no other TV show. Creating something "deep" is not just simply creating an interesting story and characters it is the transformation from low culture pulp to high culture. It is the ability to distinguish itself from the masses and have the creative/auteur ability to say something, whether it delves in politics, psychoanalysis, society or philosophy is irrelevant, but it must say something.
Don't get me wrong I love playing as mindless marine killing aliens but if Video Games wants to be taken seriously it must have more. I really hope Heavy Rain succeeds in this or at least allows other creators to produce similar games.
