FFXIII Hits 1 Million Sold Mark In Japan...On First Day!

No game will be breaking the new sales records set by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 any time soon, but certain titles will still prove more popular in Japan.

One of them isn't a surprise: it's Final Fantasy XIII, which just launched this week in Japan to throngs of excited role-playing fans. It's tough to pin down exact shipment numbers but the reports range between 1.6 and 2 million...and that's just in the first 24-hour period! That's an insanely high number for only one region and to top it all off, the Japanese portal for Yahoo is reporting that over 1 million copies have sold on that first day! At first, the translation went a little wonky and it said "100 million," which of course everyone knew wasn't true (there are only about half that many PS3s in the world, aren't there?), but 1 million is still pretty damn impressive. Now, I'm not sure if that's counting any import sales, because I know FFXIII has been the most imported title of the generation thus far. Either way, though, the Japanese have always adored FF and believe it or not, the US and Europe love it almost as much, so you should expect a similar explosion here. Well, you plan to pick it up when it first hits the store shelves, right?

As if anybody needs any reminding, Final Fantasy XIII is slated to be on store shelves in North America on March 9.

Yeah and that's not counting the bundles numbers, which I think they shipped around 200K, which should be all gone by now. The numbers for PS3 sales this week should also be interesting... Ah If only I spoke japanese, I'd have import this a long time ago...

Oh, to be young again and think a day (when FFXIII released) is a "long time ago."

;)

I'm guessing you are very young because we all know that when we are young the days are long and that the days grow shorter and pass faster as we grow older.

;)

good point darxed, the Lightning PS3 bundled w| FF13 also probably would give the game & the PS3 a boost. This is why I still consider FF13 an exclusive. It's not out 4 months before the 360's version, the 360 version will also only be available in NA.

Square said releasing this on the 360 was not a betrayal of Sony fans but a bonus to 360 fans. Knowing now that Square doesn't intend to gimp the US PS3 Version(uncompressed video and audio)makes me think of this as an exclusive too.

Jawnkee, they did say that they were keeping the PS3 and the 360 version as close to each other in quality as possible. And of course, this means that certain things were held back. Remember the first trailers for FFXIII? That battle system kicked ass. Ever notice that it was the battle system before they decided a 360 release? Then the battle system had to change to what it is today, surely because the 360 wouldn't have been able to make a battle system as awesome as that work. Still a great looking game, though. At least Versus XIII is going to kick more ass than it, though. Everyone knows that xD No Microsoft tie-downs. lol.

If that number is Japan only, that's between 25 and 33% of all PS3 owners in Japan buying it on day 1.

WOW. I wish PS3 owners elsewhere were so dedicated to their favorite games....

Youre right, thinking about it that way, that is a crazy number...

unless new system sales are somwhere in the 500,000 range, thats just a crazy attach rate for a game.

I just watched the opening scene to it. I felt like I was watching a xmas commercial for teenage SUPERPOWEREDNESS LIKE WHOAAAA OMG PARENTS SUCK AND ITS OK FOR GUYS TO BE GAY tv show.

Still though I got to admit ....... I want to play this game. There. I said it. Bite me. Why? The music. There is NO ONE BETTER IMO for game music than the people at SquareEnix, well World of Warcraft guys are good too. Dont believe me? The greatest music of any game in the world IMO belongs to ..... Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1.

End of Line.

I predict that this will sell like hotcakes in Europe too. The only place that FFXIII will sell close to the same amount on both platforms is the US, and that'll probably be a close race.

I like checking sales charts now, it's fun to make predictions and see the ebb and flow of sales.

now the true jrpg storm comes again reminding people about the good old time. -- this is the real gaming time, no more fps, no more so called motion control, no more "innovative but no fun" games, this is the start of reminding people what real games are, and where the real good games originated.

Very very true!!! Final Fantasy always seems to do that, doesn't it? lol. I love JRPGs, the only good RPGs come from Japan, though some lucky ones sprout from elsewhere. I wanna get a hold of End of Eternity, I think is what it's called. I got used to the Japanese name and then the new one came up and I forgot both of the names, lol.

Final Fantasy isn't set in Japan, so I see no reason why you think Japanese vocals are a propos. The characters don't even look Asian. If the English dub is good (like FFXII), there's no reason to prefer the Japanese one (unless you're Japanese, of course).

Yakuza, on the other hand...

Yesterday he delivered my stuff to me and my god, the back of his car was filled with more than 30 copies of FFXIII which made me drool but because it's in Japanese that's why I didn't bother ordering it from him.
