Poll Suggests Majority Of Gamers Want PS4 Over New Xbox
Obviously, this is all a long ways off - thankfully - but one poll suggests that far more gamers would be interested in the new PlayStation rather than the new Xbox...twice as many more, in fact.
This from TechRadar's latest poll, which finds that most just want a pen that's also a flying car. ...see, that's what you get for putting a joke in as an option; it will always win just because that's how the Internet works. But in second place was the PS4, with nearly twice as many votes as the next Xbox machine; 35% of all the votes cast were for next-gen video game consoles, too. Of course, only 4% wanted the next Wii but then again, I think that's about the percentage of people who want a Wii now. Okay, as the sales numbers indicate, that isn't true but when it comes to actual gamers, it's absolutely true. Apple owned the fourth spot behind the new Xbox with the Apple Tablet and next iPhone but overall, it seems most of the avid industry fanatics are most interested in what Sony has in store for us in the next generation. We've heard some early details pertaining to the PS4, which some analysts believe might land in 2012, although Sony continues to emphasize their 10-year lifespan plan for the current PS3. Of course, you can always keep the PS3 going with the PS4 out; just look at the PS2... It just doesn't die.
But anyway, this sort of proves that the PlayStation brand has forced its way back into the limelight, and this is good news for the PS3. The longer "PlayStation" stays in that limelight, the more popular the PS3 (and ensuing interest for the PS4) will become, obviously.

if my ps3 can give me uncharted 2 i wana see what my ps4 could give me.
i dont want any new systems coming out for at least another 3 years, and i doubt they will be out any earlier than that.
both sony and M$ have not squeezed as much cash out of them as they can.
and if they were considering releasing new systems why would they bother with the new motion controllers, and 3D compatible FW update?
if a PS4 was coming out soon, sony would of not announced either of those and held them off for a launch accessory for the PS4.
because if they released them for the ps3, people would say meh im not buying a PS4, a ps3 can also do those things.
when your releasing a new system you need to have as many things exclusive to that system as possible, to entice people to buy it.
if 99.99% of the things the PS4 can do, the PS3 can than why would you buy it?

On its first year it delivered the goods
On its second we got MGS4, LBP, R3, etc.
------------
If you're talking 'bout popularity and sales, yes now it's when it's picking up. The ps3-only quality has been there since the beginning.

PowerXcell 8xi - a mor recent version of the CPU in the PS3, made by IBM for their high performance systems. It has been enhanced to perform mathematics more quickly. There are three kinds of math done on a CPU, Integer, Single Precision floating point and Double Precision floating point. Floating point math is important in physics, audio and graphics work. The Cell in the PS3 is really good at Single precision FP work, but not so good at Double Precision. The PowerXCell processor is an improved Cell that's much, much better at Double Precision, and a bit better at Single Precision without sacrificing any other performance.
Ray Tracing - Graphics technique where the image is constructed by tracing the path of light from the light source in a scene as it bounces off and interacts with the surfaces in the scene. It uses a lot of physics and is very math intensive. But, it produces far better looking graphics. The effects in movies are all done using ray tracing.
SPE - Synergistic Processing Elements - the part of the Cell that handles the floating point math. There are 7 active SPEs on the PS3, they are each effectively a processor core.
Power7 - the most recent version of the PowerPC processor from IBM, it will be *very* powerful, and *very* quick. The Cell has an older version of the PowerPC as it's main processing core.
Larabee is Intel's first attempt at a lot of simple cores on one chip, they are using an older Pentium core design that has been simplified and modified for working in parallel with others. Larabee had up to 48 of these simpler cores on it. But Larabee is a prototype, and is not going into production, they will be doing a slightly more refined design.

You can find much of this (and it's almost all correct information) at the Wikipedia.

IMO the PS3 was a failure this life cycle, at least compared to the PS2. Price point is the ONLY REASON it is losing to the XBOX and Nintendo Wii and, IMO, the only reason that the WII has sold so much. Had the ps3 been 299 from the beginning it would be on top. Period. Instead of the gimmmick that is Wii.
You can yack all you want about how the PS3 cost 800 bucks to make and blah blah blah. It cost the PS3 this generation.
If they DO come out with a high priced PS4 hardly ANYONE WILL BUY IT and I believe it will be over for Sony.
End of Line.

As Rod Serling used to tell us....
Please don't attempt to adjust your system, there is nothing wrong with it.
Contary to your thinking, because although the PS3 was originally expensive, it was never a failure, it isn't a failure in our present day, nor will it ever be a failure in our future's future either.
Sony's in it to win it over the long haul!
And win it all, it will.
Just as history has already shown us from the last two console generations, in which BOTH the PS1 & the PS2 reined supreme over all other pretenders of the crown.

As for a $450 initial cost for a notional PS4 in two or three years, that would be 25% less than the initial cost of the PS3 after 5 years of inflation. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me actually.
You don't get something for nothing folks. You could have paid $400 for an Xbox360 Pro and have purchase at least one replacement already, how would that cost stack up against the original $600 PS3? Not to forget the included BluRay player which would represent an additional cost. Let's not re-do the whole cost/value for money argument shall we, it was a dumb argument three years ago, and even more pointless now.

We're talking about Joe Blow and his missus who, even now, aren't buying the cheaper Slim in Wii like numbers and if they see a higher price point they just DON'T look into what it represents or care how muchj it cost to make-they'd say why bother when the other consoles are so much less money wouldn't they?
I fear that Sony may well have failed to learn anything from the way the PS3 prise was seen by the masses too-they just released some details about their survey about the costs for PSN Premium. And those osts look EXORBITANT even next to Live and approach close to the $100 per year mark!! When they cannot make the actual online gaming part of it I fear they're totally out of touch and wonder just where they do their market research. Sweden or Norway where a beer costs a tenner?
No, Sony gear is way overpriced in many cases(look at the disaster of the Go!)from Bravias(which aren't the best TVs around by a long, long way. In fact my Bravia has been easily the worst and most expendive HDTV I've owned-and I jhave ive in all)to PSP to Vaios and though the PS3 is a different case given it's production costs I worry that Sony just don't know anymore what people are prepared to pay for things-and those prices aren't dependent on anything but that arbitrary number in the heads of Mr and Mrs average. Sony just don't seem that in touch with what the average consumer believes is a fair enough price for things.

The models don't need to be more complex, but the textures and lighting could be more consistently good, which more power would allow. And I don't think those upgrades would result in much more work (unlike modeling and animation).
Wouldn't you like to see Uncharted 4 run in 1080p with 4x AA at a smooth 120 FPS?
Eye-gasm.

The PS2 sold more than 140 million units which is nearly 5 times as many than the 360, so does everybody have 4 or 5 PS2s? I mean really, everybody has a 360? Everybody? Really?

I was one of those who really wanted a launch 60 gigger, but due to most of my money being tied up elsewhere for the last couple years, I couldn't afford to get it till earlier this year.
And I actully wound up paying $605 for my used 60gb after taxes & 2 extra 1 year warranties.
And I don't regret itone (except for my long wait to get one, that is).
