PSXE Poll Update: Spike VGA Awards Did It Right

Wow, the Spike TV Video Game Awards have come a long way in seven years.

It's what may very well be called the Academy Awards of gaming (despite many who will claim the AIAS awards are more prestigious and meaningful) and this year, we have to admit that we agree with many of the nominations and victors. Heck, it almost seems as if they were chosen by - 'gasp' - gamers! We wanted to see what you thought and not surprisingly, the vast majority believe that at the very least, they got a lot right. After all, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves nailed down Game of the Year, as well as Best PS3 Game and Best Graphics. It lost out to Assassin's Creed II in the Best Action/Adventure category, but it nailed that victory the following week during the G4TV Best of 2009 awards. We have yet to give out our awards - we kinda wait until the end of the year, you know - but it goes without saying that Uncharted 2 will be in the running in multiple categories. There are other VGA 2009 nominations I'm sure some of you agree with, so let's hope we continue to see this kind of accuracy in the future.

For now, we want to know what you think is the most under-appreciated game of the year. Note I didn't say "underrated;" that means something else: if it's underrated, you think critics didn't give it a fair shake but if it's under-appreciated, it means the gaming public didn't respond well enough; i.e, sales, word-of-mouth, general perceived popularity, etc. Is it the niche Demon's Souls? Is it inFamous or Killzone 2, which seem to have declined quickly in popularity as 2009 advanced? is it a downloadable gem like Shatter? Let us know.

I'd say Infamous or Killzone 2
But clearly, Demon's Souls is one of this year's best games

Heck, there hasn't been a game like this one ever...(correct me if I'm wrong though). Phantasy Star is the closest thing I could think of

But still, the whole Demon's Souls system is amazing!

Implaying through demon's souls now and it's hard to put it down, that game just sucks you in.

I started playing ACII this past week and it is addictive as hell. I can see why they gave it the action/adventure win. Mostly for the 'adventure' aspect I would think. Although as good as it is, I do wonder just how great it would have been if Ubisoft had dumped the DVD gimp effect.

If they made it exclusive, they probably could have made the game weeks longer. ACII has kept me from work for 3 days straight.

I feel the most under-appreciated games of the year are inFamous and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The most over-appreciated game of the year is...well, why waste my breath?!

Yeah I don't understand how a game can win Game of the Year but lose in its own genre category. Just does not make any sense.

Do sales not factor into appreciation? Because, I was under the impression Killzone 2 sold well. My vote goes to Demon's Souls, I guess.

Agreed.

Killzone 2 sold 2.13 million, with a 91 Metacritic score.

Infamous sold 1.18 million, with a 85 Metacritic score.

Demon's Souls .48 million, with a 89 Metacritic score.

The underappreciated game is obviously Demon's Souls with no close second among those three.

Demon's Souls is one of the games that makes me proud of being a gamer. It is simply AMAZING.

Demon's Souls shows what games are about, unlike those over-hyped games such as Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3

I'd say Killzone 2. Now I hate FPS games, but I hear from nearly everybody here about how great it is and that it's better than MW2. So I figure it's under appreciated due to the hyped up juggernaut of MW2. I swear even the shooter fans at work won't give it a go because they won't play anything but MW2.

On another note, I just finished AC2 tonight. I had no interest in the game but something made me pick it up and I loved it (still think Batman's better though). I may actually get platinum out a game for the first time. Just need 4 more. 2 (feathers and cape) will just require time to find which ones I'm missing (wow that will be tedious). Sweeper is a pain the patooty, I can't seem to pull it off but I think some diligence will get me there. Unfortunately, I missed Flyswatter and there's nothing else I can do other than play it again (at least up to that point), which might be more work than it's worth. Wish we could redo missions.

I could see that logic, but Killzone 2 came out almost a year before mw2 and was never in it's shadow.

Again, Demon's Souls is one of the games I'm really appreciating and deserves a lot more praise. While others were playing Modern Warfare 2, I was roaming the beautiful, but dangerous landscape of Boletaria.

Infamous is not getting much love anywhere and that's probably because it came out earlier this year and remained in the shadows of the games that came out this Fall. -_-

Have to give it to Infamous that game got no press at all, Hell most people who are getting their first ps3 don't even know about it. And while Killzone is kinda being shadowed by MW2 right now, it is still getting some advertisement. And for those of you who think Demon's Souls should get it, the game was never expected to go big outside of Japan so we can't be too surprised when it doesn't get any press.

Most under-appreciated game of 2009 is inFAMOUS. my favorite game this year behind Uncharted 2 and Spirit Tracks. I ran through that game so many times. It was fun in so many ways. I usually hate open world games but for some reason this did it for me. Second I'd say Killzone 2. Graphics and sound area amazing and it's not talked about enough.

infamous should of got GOTY.
its the only game ive played that met my expectations than exceeded them.
the climbing mechanic in the game is brilliant, it would of taken sucker punch a hell of allot of time to program every single building to be climbable.
that would of been really tedious and i really appreciate that they went through and did it.
what they say is true, its the little things that count.
thats the main disappointment about assassins creed 2, besides the combat, the buildings are awkward to climb.
im constantly climbing a tall tower, or really large building and have to go all the way around it to climb up.
like i start on the south side, climb up 2 steps, than move 2 steps to the left than climb 2 steps.
none of that stuffing around in infamous, just jump up and climb.
no screwing around, that really comes in handy when you have a million and one people trying to kill you.

Most under appreciated game is UC2.

It received universal acclaim and given 2 months already UC2 has yet to sell 2million.

If that's not under appreciated then I might as well list down games like ZOE and SoTC.

it really annoys me that Uncharted 2 won goty but didnt win in its own category in those awards. How does that even happen? It deserved all the awards it got, and ND worked really hard to get where they're at with the franchise. Regardless im just excited that the game and ND got what they deserved in the end which was the prestigious honor of GOTY! Congrats again to ND!

other than that the show was ok. i did however hate the musical performances they had as well.

As for most underappreciated game i gotta say KZ2. So many people are stuck on MW2 that they look past all other shooters! thats great for MW and that franchise but its horrible for gaming in general because other great games like KZ2 are looked past! infamous was great but i dont think that game was underappreciated because it was an excellent game but for the type of game it is, there was a lot of stiff competition this year! I do believe however that a lot more people passed on it than really should have! Its a tough choice but i gotta say KZ2 was the most underappreciated game this year! it deserves far more than what it got, and Guerrilla Games in my opinion showed us what FPS can look like at the top of the game!

If Demons Souls didn't get anything then it wasn't right was it.

Awards are based off of commercialism. They don't mean nothin...and nor does a review...the latter literally being a kind of recommendation if its in the correct hands (otherwise its probably paid for by the man or full of propaganda)

The more arthouse lovers or, rather, ones with a brain just sit back and laugh at everything falling...whilst everyone else follows the in trend of being spoon fed warm diarrhea.

What it is.

I'm only going to say this once:

The "arthouse lovers" are comprised of 98% posers with elitist syndromes who believe they can "see" things other people can't, and 2% actual art appreciators. THINKING you have a brain and actually HAVING one are two very different things, something this group has never been able to figure out...because they're not very bright.

And no major critic is getting paid by "the man" and not a one I've read is "full of propaganda." There are no conspiracy theories, here.

I posted once before that I thought Sony dropped the ball on ads for UC2 and the sales represent that, the same thing happened with KZ2. They started a couple of weeks, maybe a month, before release then you really never see anything else on them. You might see a system ad that shows them in the back ground, but that's it. Granted ads for the system has increased 10x over, but nothing really dominate for the exclusives.
