Square-Enix To Announce A Game "Everyone Has Requested"

I'm not entirely sure why Square-Enix is doing this to me. Perhaps it's because I didn't buy Final Fantasy XI, thereby breaking my vow of buying "every FF game." Maybe that got back to them and being the bitter, vindictive, hateful people they are, they've decided to torture me for all eternity.

The rumor that Final Fantasy VII will be remade for the PlayStation 3 may very well be the longest running rumor in the history of video games (unless you count Duke Nukem Forever, which proved to exist but eventually fizzled out) and just when you think all hope has disappeared... According to RPG Land citing a Gamega interview with Square-Enix's Tetsuya Nomura, he'll be announcing a brand new title in 2010 and it has been "requested by fans" and even by members of the press he meets "all over the world." The quote, featuring broken translation, reads as follows:

"I can just say, that indeed, whereas I'm still working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Agito XIII and a little later on The 3rd Birthday (this year), we will announce other games this year and which one is terribly waited from everyone and often 'REQUESTED' by fans and even of the press crew that I meet all over the world."

Now, we could assume this is Kingdom Hearts III, which many have pined for over the last few years. It actually could be any number of things, but when he says it's a game that has been requested by both fans and the press, we're all inclined to believe he's talking about a FFVII remake. After all, whenever Nomura and other S-E executives are interviewed, this question almost always pops up. It's almost too painful to even consider the possibility because I just know they're gonna break my heart all over again. But hey, I suppose I can start hoping again... 'bracing'

Just about a minute ago I finished my digital copy of FFVIII on my psp. I started playing FF games when I was kid with the NES but I think VIII (yes 8) is my all time favorite by a long shot. Now that I'm playing, what ..10 years from when it came out? I understand everything and can follow the story much better and really appreciate everything they did with that game. It was leaps and bounds ahead of VII (imo of course, but ...come on, just on graphics alone it's leaps and bounds prettier, still holds up on the little psp screen)

Anyways, I'm not the biggest fan of VII today but when it released it blew me away. Now, a remake with much better graphics, story scenes, music and SFX, translation, extras? I would definitely be interested in seeing how they do that. Even though I'm a tad over saturated in FFVII stuff lately, aren't we all?

That's the beauty of the FF series. Everyone has a favorite for their own reasons. Everyone gets an attachment to certain characters and stories at a certain time in their lives. It's great :D

That is what is great about the FF games. Many of us have found an installment that touched our hearts and minds. Every version has been fun (minus FFX-2 in my opinion) with a compelling story and solid gameplay.

I enjoy them all (again, minus FFX-2). FFX is still probably my favorite, but it in no way makes it 'better' than any of the others.

FF8 was good, but can't be better than VII, just can't be. Final Fantasy VII wasn't even fully finished when it was released and look at it, it became one of the biggest titles in the line up. It's got story within the story. It's compelling and the Materia system was just awesome, I would LOVE play it all over again as a PS3 remake. It's a whole lot better than getting a damn grid system where everyone ends up being exactly the same in the end. Where's the individuality in that? Where's the fun? Especially when a character is supposed to be someone who uses White Magic (Yuna) and then uses black magic or vice versa (Lulu). Beside from that, the game is just an immortal story from the iconic villain with a God disorder to the lead protagonist who has no idea who the hell he really is, but in the end, he's cool with that, lol. Hell, in Dissidia, Cloud admitted to be being scared as hell, the most scared character in Dissidia, he just knows how to keep all of it to himself and seem calm about it, lol. But yeah, FF8 would be my second runner up. Imagine an FF8 remake...PS3 Final Fantasy VIII. Damn, I've started a new one, lol. Actually, not sure how this would go, but what if they remade the first Final Fantasy? That would be kind of awkword in a way, but at the same time, it would be a complete surprise and might even turn out better than any other remake out there. lol. Why not remake FF1? lol xD

LOL, I don't you've played it tho, right world? So not much to criticize about without being a little hypocritical =P KH is a great game whether it has disney characters or not. The gameplay is nice and fluid and the story is pretty...well i wouldn't say it's great but it's entertaining. Though individually...I never really cared for goofy myself, LOL.

I wouldnt like that, the materia system would have to be scrapped i that would suck. Refining materia on each character is one of the best part of ff7, imo.
I'd be happy with just a plain remake of FF7 in HD. No extras, no changes, just the FF7 everyone loves.

Sony published FF7 in the US, idk what that implies for future remakes.
You have to remember, even the original FF7 wasnt exclusive, it was released for Windows.

Yes it's a nice collector's item now. It sells for more than the PS version does. Seen one go for over $200. And the re-released Platinum Edition, in a square box, goes for around $150 or so. And seen the combo of FFVII and FFVIII PC versions go for almost $500. I have both PC versions but I'm not getting rid of them. With the graphic upgrades it looked better than the jagged edge fest on the PS version. But I have the PS versions as well.

FF7 did wonders for the ps1 back in the 90s, Im sure a remake would have the same effect on the ps3. Though for all we know this could end up being some wii or ds exclusive.

But seeing as the FF7 digital copy on the psn has been in the top 10 ever since it was released. Hopefully if it really is FF7 remake then it is exclusive to playstation3.

If it were done right, an FFVII remake could very well be the biggest thing to hit the PS3. I've deliberated over this possibility with several of my friends and we've all come up with things we'd like to see in a remake, as well as a do/don't or two:

1. The only change that could be made to the story would be the inclusion of elements introduced in FFVII: DoC and FFVII: CC. Even so, they'd have to be delicate changes as the story is already enthralling enough.

2. Possibly an updated battle system. Maybe not so much action-oriented, but something along the lines of XII. Even then, I wouldn't complain if it was left the organic ATB.

3. Bonus dungeon. I firmly believe every RPG should contain a dungeon that will either make or break the person attempting it. Something I really wouldn't mind is a chance to actually fight Diamond Weapon (the weapon who gets its head blown off).

4. Materia Fusion. I loved this part of CC and would love to see it somehow incorporated into a VII remake. Maybe it's just me...

5. One new limit break for each character. Sure, Omnislash is amazing... but I think it could be topped.

Those are just a couple things that would be awesome, in my opinion. That being said, I would just love to play the game with updated graphics and better translation.

meh, aren't there three future Final Fantasy's announced? 13, VS, & 14 (although I think it's being developed by other developers). I'd much rather a Kingdom Hearts 3, they made one for the DS, they can't just let that go to waste.

I'll keep my finger crossed for Final Fantasy VII, but i agree with Wolf on this one. I have a feeling it will be Kingdom Hearts 3, always has had high praise, and a strong fan base, one of the many reasons to make a third installment.

I'll still keep my hope on Final Fantasy VII though!

God help me I tried to play KH and KHII because of the FF characters in them but I just couldn't, it was unplayable.

I hope to high facking crap it's an FFVII remake, but there is one big problem with that which needs to be cleared up. Hit the poll here:

Uhmm... remake<new game

Remaking seven involves more then just graphical boosts I mean they'd have to "upgrade" the battle system, and personally I'd expect a bit of extra content after all it is a remake of a game that's been out for how long now?

But if we're talking about remakes Shadow of the Colossus>FFVII I mean Team ICO said it themselves there were Colossus missing and we're cut from the game for various reasons like being over powered, or not having enough variety. With the PS3 not only would SotC look absolutely stunning but they could add on those new colossus and let's not forget SotC was originally meant to be a multiplayer game and now that studios are a lot more familiar with online gaming it's always a possibility. Not saying that SotC single player was bad because it was awesome but a sweet co-op on top of that would just make my life.

I bet my hard earned cash on KH3 but want FFVII in HD with Trophies. And why are ppl talking about non-squeenix games for the remake? Lol. I'd love a new ZOE and SoTC but those are two different companies altogether. I do remember something in a interview with Hideo regarding ZOE 3 though so cross your fingers and maybe it'll be out before Duke Nukem.

ohhhhhh my god, let it be ff7, they could do so much for it. keep the game as is, but with amazing graphics, stunning cutscenes, updated materia system (but not toooo updated) but also add even more brand new side quests scattered throughout the world. more summon materia, ohhh i could go on 4eva.

Anyway, here is a list of what i really like to see in the new FF7
1. Better graphics
2. The same battle system but I'd like it to be more complicated, e.g. more weapons, more capabilities, more limit breaks, more summons etc...
3. maybe mixing materias like FF7CC...
4. and changing clothes up to five items including the weapon so each item has the maximum of five slots or six if you want to combine materia
5. voices
6. same story but in depth that links all the previous entries after FF7 and more revelations to the story
7. more comedy, more drama and strong feelings, something to show that videogames aren't just plain games; they are an Art
8. longer game and more optional dungeons and bosses and mini games and story related missions
9. more riddles
10. and don't give us the option of changing the names of the characters because we really like them the way they are (so that it doesn't affect the in-game conversations where the name is cut like in some games)
11. the final boss,, make him stronger..at least put him at the same level as the main character or more when he fights(like 110lvl if i reach him at 100lvl) ...so finishing the game becomes a challenge.
12. I really like the breaking of the damage and health limit 9999...so we want that in FF7...99999 or 999999 or 7x9s hehe...and make the final blow the strongest in each combo please
13. offer something more after beating the game with a "save" and counts of beating the game...like "look! I've finished it 7 times hehe"
14. Finally, make Cloud stronger both in appearance and in character, he is the hero after all

well yeah options are nice ,but, in audible conversations between the characters ,if the names are changed, how can they say them? I vaguely remember this game where the characters talk but omit the changed names in conversations...it wasn't professional imo
I can though suggest this, they can add the option of nicknaming the characters. For example, Cid (The destruction bringer)lol

Sony holds publishing rights for final fantasy VII. But we don't know whether its the name or the actual game.

I always hear people saying that nomura favors the playstation brand. Does anyone have any proof of that?

At banky, the franchise is already multiplatform. There are two or three kingdom hearts games on nintendo platforms and there is one for mobile.

vagrant story?? It's always been one of my favorite RPGs of all time and all I want is it to be made with better graphics and maybe voice overs will be acceptable. Even a prequel or sequel will be fine.

Final Fantasy Versus 14!!! Lmao

To be realistic here =D, I'm banking on an FF7 Remake, or KH3. One of those two.

Unless it's a nintendo exclusive game (which they've been releasing more of recently, to little to moderate demand) or an XBOX exclusive (of which there is very little demand for a lot of their releases), then whatever, I'll be fine lol =P

Come on KHIII, a FFVII remake would obviously aswell be awesome but I dont see how it could be better than the original, graphics obviously but everything else... meh(play it just for that scene with tifas boobs jiggling :p). Either would be awesome!

The possibility of a FFVII remake gives me mixed feelings, although I would love to see one.

My question is how should they approach the story?

1. Exact remake, word for word.
2. Remake with updated script/voice acting.

I personally feel they need to go the route of updating the script. At least provide better translation. Advent Children really helped the story grow up and the image it painted of Cloud would be lost if they did a simple 'graphic upgrade' with the sub-par script of 1990's video games.

Next is how to approach the battle system. Should it remain the same or should it receive some tweaks?

How would die-hard fans perceive the changes? I myself would welcome minor adjustments, but may frown upon a complete overhaul.

What do you guys think?

Tweaking anything minor would be fine, and of course fixing mistakes in the game would be great...

... but if they go too far on a complete overhaul, it would probably not be well received.

For improvements, all they really need to do is update the graphics, slightly adjust the script, include voice acting, and fix any glitches found in the original game.

And of course trophy support would be awesome.

They overhauled the script for Final Fantasy Tactics and did a phenomenal job. The new dialogue is far superior to the old.

I believe they could do just as good of a job if they overhauled the language for FFVII. Not only that, but having all spoken dialogue would be a major advantage to a remake.

Man, I leave the table for a few days and I come back to THIS :) I've said this before, and I'll say it again -- FF VII deserves a remake more than any other game out there, in my most humble of opinions. When you consider Square-Enix has been steadily remaking all of the FFs, it stands to reason that of course they would re-make the most cherished chapter of them all (the most cherished for most of us, anyway.) I really dunno when it would happen. But 2010 sounds like a reasonable time to announce it. After XIII launches in the US, why not? It may be a ways away yet, but there's not a doubt in my mind the greatest game world ever made is going to get its due in a full-on, PS3-powered remake. I will hardly care if it comes out on 360 as well, but MARK MY WORDS, PSX NATION -- eventually, we will get our remake. And it will be DIVINE playing it with our wireless Dualshocks, our HD sets and our collective appreciation ;)

I've played through FFVII more than a few times already since the whole FFVII remake thing has been around and everytime I get to a certain part, I always think to myself 'I wanna see this in PS3 graphics so bad!'. Imagine the Gold Saucer, the meteor floating in the sky, and the infamous scene where Sephiroth plummets down and kills Aerith. I could keep going on about all the different things I would love to see in the graphics capable from the PS3, like being able to see Knights of the Round and roaming the world map (on a Chocobo or riding the Highwind no less), and fighting the legendary Weapons. Hell, if I were to be able to play a PS3 version of FFVII and went to the Gold Saucer and lost ALL of my Gil or Tickets (though I always have enough Gil to get the lifetime pass, lol), I wouldn't care because I would be looking at my favorite game of all time remastered in high definition. I wanna get my ass kicked by Sephiroth in High Definition, lol.

Okay so first of all, this news is probably the best in gaming news so far. I'm happy at whatever Tetsuya Nomura throws at me, as long as it’s PS3/360. Second I noticed that most of you are saying that these games aren't going multi-platform and it will stay exclusive, I think that’s true... but for Japan ONLY, but I think its most definitely going multi-platform in Europe and the U.S, because there are over 20.66 million units sold in the U.S and 13.92 in Europe, exceeding the PS3 sales in those two regions. That’s why FFXIII went multi-platform in the U.S. Also square-enix has been giving a lot of love to the Xbox 360 this generation when it comes to the JRPGs. So I think these two projects will go multi-platform. Now I know what you are all going to say that FFVII was published by Sony... but you also got to notice that Eidos published the PC version of FFVII therefore it’s not an exclusive, and Sony doesn't have the rights to it. Also when the PS3 first came out a lot of PS2 fans migrated to the Xbox 360 because they couldn't deal with the ridiculous price. Finally correct me if I'm wrong but just because Tetsuya Nomura is in love with the PS3, he can't stop it from going multi-platform because I don't think he has to the power to do so. Please if your going to comment put up and arguable debate, and don't just blindly run off your mouth about how I'm wrong without it giving a proper reason. Thanks guys :)

PS: He said he is working on 2 projects so... it could be both KH3 and FFVII remake, just pray to god it goes on either PS3/360, nothing else.

I DO know that Kingdom Hearts III wont be going on anything other than the PS3, the first and second one were PS2 exclusives and they even remade the GBA Chain of Memories game onto the PS2, I own it and it's really fun. I also believe that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would have to be a PS3 exclusive mainly because when they did the tech demo for the PS3, they were experimenting with the PS3 capabilities. Hell, it was probably just a slap together job. But I do know that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is going to have a release date announced sometime this year. They never said when, though ;)

I really hope we will see one day FFT on the ps3 but i would nt mind if it was ff7 remake or vagrant story 2 (i m dreaming ,i know) .
