Naughty Dog Not "Itching" For New Hardware

We all know that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was a rip-roaring success in the eyes of gamers and critics alike, but how do the developers feel about the experience? Well, not surprisingly, they're satisfied with the effort.

In a lengthy G4 interview with Naughty Dog co-founder Evan Wells, we get the inside scoop on how the studio feels about every aspect of the multiplayer, how the ideas for the sequel first came about, the decision to opt for a linear adventure, the difficulty in creating puzzles and the ending, and much more. Feel free to read it all - it's well worth your time - but we'd like to point you to the question of new hardware. G4 asked Wells if he was more comfortable with the PS3 and if he was "itching" to try some new hardware, to which Wells replied:

"We're pretty comfortable with the PS3, and we made a very big advancement between the first game and the second game, we're really tapping into the Cell processor, but there's more there. The first game, it was idle about 70% of the time, which we rectified for the sequel, and now it's at least busy 100% of the time, but it's still not fully-optimized code. I mean, in order to get to that 100%, it was more about making sure the pipeline was filled, and we weren't running into one of the processors becoming idle because there wasn't a job ready for it. But now we have to go into all of those routines and optimize them so we that can get even more done using that Cell processor. It really feels that sometimes it's this bottomless pit of processing power, you find the right kind of job for it and it can just churn through those things so fast, which really helps with a lot of our rendering and post-processing effects.

So yes, we're getting comfortable. No, we're not itching for new hardware. I would love to keep working on the PlayStation [3] for 5 or 6 more years...I think there's still a lot to get out of it. We're not really feeling limited by the hardware, it's more about the hours of the day and how quickly we want to get the next game out."

Naughty Dog has spoken about their work with the PS3 in the past, and they've continually said they're happy with the console. This latest statement only proves that this particular team certainly plans to keep Sony's machine as a primary focus for future projects. Wells also spoke about what he was "most proud of," and that includes "the accomplishment of the team" and his favorite gameplay portion: the train.

...when we started we said we wanted to create these set piece moments, and a train was sort of a classic experience in these stories. But we wanted to do it differently than most people had done trains before where the train is actually static, so all of your movesets and enemies and AI and everything works because you're traditionally are not playing on moving geometry -- you'll just move the background and that creates the feeling that you're on a train. But you can only go on a straight line. You can't go around turns and bends and up hills, and we wanted to really capture that feeling that you're on the roof of the train and you see it curling around the mountainside up ahead, or you're in one car and the car in front of you is oscillating back and forth, making you adjust your aim. We knew that it was going to be a huge technology effort, and we're going to have to rewrite all of our systems for the AI, for the hero, for the physics...everything was going to have to be revamped. It took a long time to get all of that working, and it was basically the very last level in the game we finished."

Doesn't that make you want to be a developer? Who wants to sign on for Uncharted 3? Hmm...maybe they'll be hiring for it.

definetely, & seeing that Uncharted 2 was released less than 2 years after Uncharted, makes me wonder what Naughty Dog can do with 2-3 years of development. Not that they need it, I don't see how they can improve on Uncharted 2.

your rgith we havnt seen anything yet out of the PS3, but what does that say about Naughty Dog? These guys truly are what developers should be. thats not taking away from other devs, like Santa Monica, polyphony, or Guerilla, etc... But these guys truly are always looking for ways to improve on every aspect not just gameplay! Naughty Dog has truly became my favorite developer, after I played Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, and heard some of there statements regarding it, but this truly solidifies it!

... and then theres Valve, who say the ps3 is too hard to code for.
According to wikipedia Valve has 2.5 times the employees as ND (250 vs 100). Its just amazing how much a small company like ND can do while the big guys cant do anything worth bragging about.

*pumps fist in the air*

That's the Naughty Dog I've always known!
They pushed the ps1 and ps2 to really great limits. Jak 2 and 3 still look freaking amazing...(such animations/worlds.....)

Anyway there's years worth of beauty left on the ps3!

Well we all see the nice graphics at the end of PS2 cycle are at least twice as good as the release titles. If they can optimize the use of the cells, it'll be a huge advancement for them. That is what the true definition of what design is, to maximize the efficiency.

Nobodies itching for new hardware. It takes an eternity for devs to put out games as it is, you think I want to spend a fortune on another system?

We've had only 1 GTA, 1 RE, 1 MGS, 1 Tekken, 1 SoulCalibur, 1 SFIV, 1 Burnout......GOWIII isn't even out and so is FFXIII,GT5.....Wow! I'd be shocked if we see PS4 in 2012, then I'd call the PS3 era the shortest and most messed up generation ever.

No kidding. It would be called the generation of promises. The PS3 has loads more to offer. Give devs some time. Look at Dragon Age. Game in development for years. Bioware hasn't even had a chance to really try out the power of the PS3. Many other devs are in that same boat.

Uncharted is kind of the flagship IP now, not just for ND but Sony too. I hope it gets many many sequels and never stales out like Tomb Raider.

What they have to say about the hardware just makes me feel all warm and gooey inside.

Haha! I didn't notice that but it makes sense now. It was a deja vu moment for me but couldn't tell where it was from. I wasn't curious enough to look it up. Good on you mate! You just made my morning. And for the record, I don't care what anyone says, AC2 has fantastic voice acting.

huh, ill be first on that list.
but working for naughty dog is a pipe dream, they have not hired new people for a long, long time.
only the best of the best get the pride to wear the dog badge.
one of the most amazing things in games, they brought something new to the genre, the train level has NEVER been done before.
and to top it all off, they did it in only 2 freaking years.
try to top that quantic dream, polophony digital, GG and so.
thats why naughty dog will always be the best development studio, because not only do they strive for perfection every single time.
they also do it in record breaking time.
reading gameinformer yesterday, they had a interview with stig for GOW 3 and apparently they have been working on that for 4 years.
imagine what naughty dog could create, given that time frame.
what i would like to see ND do, is create a uncharted psp game linking uncharted 1 and 2, spend 2 years or so making that.
than come back spend 4 years and create uncharted 3, a goodbye letter to the ps3.
id love to see ND create a open world espionage game too, i think they would be the perfect development studio for a new cop based open world game.
like true crime on the streets of LA, that was a good game just lacked enthusiasm and a talented development studio.
lob it onto NDs shoulders and watch it take of to the moon!

Uncharted 2 is so sweet, that I had to cutback on playing it so that I can savor each level that I complete. I'm in no rush to finish this game.

Because of this, I will hold ON to my PS3 until the end of it's 10 year life cycle unlike it's predecessor. With so much effort put into this console, I'm not so sure if I want a "next-gen" console.
