PSXE Asks: What Do You Want?
By now, we've come to know hundreds of excellent, loyal readers who have turned our Comments section into something really special. And because we know how much you value that interaction with us and your fellow members, we want to give you new ways of enhancing that interaction.
You guys always seem to respond to things like this; when we handed out MAG beta codes and only asked you to upload a wallpaper or two, we received around 750 submissions in the span of 48 hours. This is just one example of your dedication and creativity (some of those wallpapers were personally made), and other examples have been when big articles get hundreds of comments in a matter of hours. It seems as if you're begging for another way of expressing yourselves while at the same time, hanging out with all the friends you've made here. Well, we just started thinking about this...you know how GameSpot has those user blogs where you can put up all sorts of stuff? We're considering something like that; you know, where you guys can post up everything from user reviews to personal experiences with your gaming and entertainment. Maybe you even want to review the latest movie or Blu-Ray release. Maybe the latest CD. Maybe your new car. Maybe you just want to rant about something that totally ticked you off, and you need to vent to a sympathetic crowd. Maybe you want to share your latest wallpaper or theme creation with everyone and get feedback. The best part? What you do will actually become part of the site, viewable by all.
Basically, not only do we want you to have more ways to interact with one another, but we also want to give you plenty of options to create user-generated content that's all your own. Maybe you disagreed with one of our reviews or maybe we didn't get to a review, and you want to step in and provide readers with your own views. All you'd have to do is log in and utilize certain aspects of what we anticipate being an expanded UserCP. But before we start this up, we're asking you flat out: what would you like to see and do? When you log into PSXE in the future, what do you want to do besides read and comment? I was going to do a poll, but this type of thing needs actual verbal (or typed, whatever) feedback. Let us know and we'll get to work. :)

I would also like more data on the User CP, especially PSN IDs (for those who dare to post them).
A feature I mentioned earlier that would be great is the ability to use the Recent Activity page to jump to the article (as you can on Joystiq), so that we could quickly find our old comments to see if anyone had responded to them. It's the only thing that's better on Joystiq than PSXExtreme.
I don't even have time for the Forums, much less user blogs. :)
p.s. I'm accepting Friend requests from anyone whom I can recognize from PSXExtreme.

Would be good to to see/have:
1] Robust user rating system for all active user contributions in the future; with the highest rated user generated content linkable from the front page of the website under a special section. Similar to your "Latest Update" panel you have, but listing highlighted and highly rated comments, blog posts or reviews
2] As in point one - I think users could/should generate blogs and user reviews; however the way the user contributions are pipelined, checked and validated should be looked at carefully before anything is permitted to be posted live and made available to the general public. Strongly suggest PSXeXtreme employs (where possible) a system of validation before anything can simply be posted up. I don't know if its practical but it may need a system of editorial validation to retain a certain standard of quality.
3] Contributers rating list - PSXeXtreme may want to consider the idea that brand new members may not be permitted to post user blogs or reviews immediately after joining. A system should be considered whereby a member would have contributed a certain amount of content - say in the comments section or the overall length of time spent on the site - before a threshold is met that would permit that user then to submit more content in more areas across the site. This again is to sustain quality and help new members grow within the community where a certain level of trust is reached between the user, the site admins and the community at large.
4] Audio CD's, Movies, Blu-Ray release reviews are a possibility no doubt, but this user generated should be separate from the general information used in the game section of the website. Again, the idea is that if user generated content should approach the level and quality we have come to expect from PSXeXtreme then there would need to be some admin review and validation before some of the content is released.
Alternatively, if the purpose is purely as a form of expression by any individual then one would have to accept the possibility of misinformation and inaccuracies to be evident within some of the user generated content posted. Not necessarily a bad think; just depends on the quality standards the site wants to maintain.
Some control and validation here may need to be implemented overall...
My thoughts on the matter for now :)

To be honest I would just hate to see things get to crowded though so as long as you guys keep the site as clean as you run it now (which is quite the feat) then im sure additional user generated content would be a welcome addition ^_^
P.S: I would love a list of avatar images to choose from already on the site ^_^ I navigate this site from my phone due to a lack of pc's at my place and getting a nice size image is a pain. I know its trivial but the avatars speak volumes about the users and I would love to see what you guys could do in that regard ^_^

It would also be cool to have a place on the cp to show not only all the games we own, but what games we are currently playing. Then we would need a way to see who else in the community is playing/owns it. That way someone who's looking for a good PSN friend can look up users according to their tastes.
You don't need to do themes for me unless it's on the cp. The news feed needs to stay white and uncluttered so it loads as fast as possible.
Finally Ben, thanks for allowing us to give you feedback like this. Means a lot.

The personal review stuff for movies, games, and ect. sounds really cool.
Maybe a clan area for planning and setting up matches, the usual clan stuff.
This idea isn't so much for the sites members then it is to get more traffic through here, but how about having a YouTube channel or some kind of FaceBook integration and FB group page.
Whatever you guys do I'm sure it will be great.

Also I'd like to have a profile where I can show off my games, as Alienage said, and something like recommendations of other users that have games that I have.
Another thing that i'd like to see in your reviews is a "fun" and a "length" part, where you can see how much time you'd have to spend to complete the game, something like what RPGamer has.

Also, the user profile here should have a spot for including our PSN user names so we could hook up and game together if so desired.
An easy way of making contact with a user privately here, without having to post on the comments page, would be welcomed as well.

Have no idea between an 8-track and a blu-ray.
Only thing I am angst here on the site is the scrolling for the comment box. Not much of a complaint. Um, but I'd also like notifications. If someone left a comment on an article instead of going Indiana Jones for it.
All in all. I love the site. Time I stop just browsing and start contributing :)

only ps3 game i have ever played thats constantly changing the gameplay up.
for once the 2nd level does not feel like a repeat of the first, the 3rd level does not feel like a repeat of the 2nd and so on and so on.
i really enjoyed the switch in the middle of the game, and seriously did not see the ending coming.
i would not be surprised if there is a haze 2, since the ending is heavily hinting at one.
though it wont be for a while because free radical are working on crysis 2 and thats not going to be out for probably another year.

What I want is reader second opinions on reviews. For example, certain reviews on this site have been less detailed then I expected concerning some key issues. Some of us can get pretty obsessed over some titles, and could offer some valuable information to the community.
I know that you guys sometimes cannot spend the neccessary time to review (for example) a 100 hour RPG that requires the time to cover everything, but someone such as myself might.
Just a thought.
But as I stated some time ago, this is my PS3 site of choice, and I visit it daily, and honestly speaking, it's near perfect!

Perhaps we didn't think things through. However, it seems that it was obviously a joke that was not funny and defied logic. He thumbed the original poster down and thought it'd be funny to "pretend" to give his email. And, if someone was going to be spammed with hate mail, why would they post their email address to begin with?

more themes, especially ones by psxe users would be great.
i could see the user space/blog idea, but it would have to differentiate itself from just becoming a forum.
also, one more feature you could do is a feature analysing the best of the psn recently. often i've no idea where to start. it is a little frightnening.
another brainwave; clan matches etc etc. i often wanna organise friendly games in less 'famous' online games.
if there would be a way to communicate, maybe in the user areas/blogs, about setting up races in any said racer, battles in any said shooter, co-op in any said awesomely amazing uncharted 2 and spec-ops of mw2 etc etc. that'd be great. just some ideas.

After getting a 24hour emergency maintenance call from LimitedVertigo, I took your computer apart & upon closer inspection.....
it seems you were just missing a few keys on your board.
But no worries, after a slight system tweakage, 3 rolls of Duct Tape & a case of SuperGlue, I was able to fix it, just as good as any Windows 97 refurb unit.
See....all fixed now, looks better already, huh?.......
sorrymykeyboardsbrokenandicanttypeit@sorry.com
BTW, twas just a minor 11 second fix, so there's no labor charge on the repair bill on your service call this time.
But the bill for materials comes to$18,247.99.
Sorry, but we don't take checks!!!!
Sooo....how will you be paying this, by cash, charge, or 1st mortgage on your home??????

That being said, I personally would like PSX to maintain something MUCH different from the likes of IGN, GameSpot, etc.
My advice is to keep the site content-focused. Don't put in a whole bunch of ads and (I've touched on this before) between-page ads that make browsing the site here a headache (the other ones sure can be).
I know that ad revenue is how everyone actually gets paid. I also know that the more in-your-face the ad is, the higher it will pay. It's not my decision to make; I just hope you guys can find a balance for ads that doesn't impede the experience of PSX.

Nobody should be concerned about the site losing its focus or identity. It should still look very much the same...only with more in the way of user interaction and user-generated content. We're just trying to figure out what works best, and the best way to implement it.

As far as adding other topics to the site, id rather you just stick to gaming, just improve relationships with dependable sources so we get the most up to date info and the other gaming sites come here to see all the latest. greatest.

Sorry my idea has got nothing to do with interaction, our own reviews and all, am satisfied with you and Arnold's reviews. Remember we already have folks who suffer from the 'I only read the heading not the whole article' syndrome, dunno if they'll find time to read user reviews.

For example, if a user writes a good review about GT5, and he says he likes RPGs like Dragon Quest, I will know that, since I like Dragon Quest, I will most likely like GT5. But if another user writes a review of GT5 saying that it is bad, and he says he likes 50 Cent the videogame, and I like 50 Cent, I won't buy it cause we have similar tastes.

I know that this is not about the user contribution but I want to bring this up for your consideration.
I've always been thinking that PSXE looks a little anonymous.
I think it's sad that the brilliant reviews, features and editorials are hidden under those blue categories in the left side of the page in column after column.
My idea is that you make PSXE look more like an online magazine.
A little like a newspaper with big pictures and headlines and then there could be user comments and new user submitted content on the frontpage too.

@ Ben. I have to admit that I don't watch videos on PSXE
Please make the videos section better.
1 - The whole process to just get to the page with the video is way to much work for me and also seems cluttered.
2 - Another thing is I don't need to know about the size, the dimensions or the system (what IS the system?) of the video.
Smash that video up in my face with the description besides it and a rating bar so I can tell other users if this video is "One to watch" and I will be more than happy to watch my videos here again!

Maybe a section where we can add hints or cheats for each other if we get stuck etc. I know sometimes you guys post walkthroughs and hints etc but sometimes the odd game has not been there and I have had to go off elsewhere if I ever really get truly stuck. Although im sure there is a place for this on the forums I always forget to check there for hints though.
@Contraband good idea about linking the PSN accounts up I only have Dillon at the moment I should add more people from here and the forums too.
Am I the only one who is not connected to the net all the time on my PS3 ? With my PS3 being across the room from my PC the ethernet cable is not always plugged in as I need to move around my room so a lot of the time I always appear offline anyway even though im sat at or by my PC lol. I know I should be online to get updates for games etc. I tend to get them when I play and forget the cable has been left in.
Apart from that Ben I love the site as it is pretty much. :)

Make the thumbs up and thumbs down on comments meaningful in some manner.
Bring through a forum group for user reviews and allow the thumbs up/thumbs down like on the Amazon user reviews where readers can indicate if it's useful to them or not.
I actually enjoy the site as is. It is thankfully free of the un-moderated nonsense that you see on so many other news sites in their comments sections. Whatever you do, don't change that.

Is there a possibility for readers to post news?
I mean, as Qubex mentions, there will be a need to moderate these posts. I ask this because there are many users on this site, some interested on certain aspects of gaming or games than others. These people may find news about their preferred area faster than psx (although admittedly rare). This may be due to people living in certain time zones (UK is about 8 hours ahead i think), or even plain obsessiveness (clicking refresh on a specific site every two seconds :P ). certainly this would make psxexteme an incredibly swift and helpful site.

2. Keep up the good work on the NEWS sections. They are the best around.
3. Instead of thumbs up or down give us ARPEES or MUSHROOMS.
4. Admit MW2 is the game of the year on PS3.
5. Girl gamers are cool. Girl gaming journalists suck, especially if they are like JESS the XBOX FANGURL from IGN. The staff you have here is fine. Gaming male nerds tend to want to kill each other over this issue.
6. Finally, you guys should post an apology to Infinity Ward and take them out to dinner over your gaming sacrilege.
love always,

Gamespot had RE5 background when it was just around the corner, the same goes for DA:O and UC2.
But hey, it's the content of PSXE and made me love you guys so much. So even if you don't put background it's fine but it'd be nice if you do.

I would love podcasts on gaming on this site. Maybe just weekly, or even monthly since it's not exactly profitable or anything and just for fans for the most part.
I would love to read user blogs on different topics, maybe even have blogs and sections on upcoming gaming events (Borderland tuesdays? No? Okay ...what about some online Uncharted 2 that we can set up via these blogs in some ...easy to use way)
Just some quick thoughts that have probably been mentioned.

Nothing makes a community feel more closely knit than having regular members contributing and bigger and better ways. Also would be a nice little tidbit for the aspiring journalist's resume.

(almost) all good ideas so far, so keep up the good work!
A few random gray-matter thoughts on what I'd like to see..
#1.
If we go to an additional user content, then make a more rubust profile page that everyone has to fill out first.
That will do a couple of things.....
#1-A You're showing everyone that consider yourself a real part of the PSXE family & you're willing to let others know a bit about you & you're gaming habits, likes, dislikes, etc, etc.
#1-B. If you can't be bothered to take a moment of your time just to fill out your own profile, then you surely don't have the time to post either.
#1-C. And then surely you shouldn't be allowed any of these new extra privileges that will go along with it.
#2.
Some sort of community bulletin board
#3.
A monthly random raffle of swag/game/game codes/ etc, and awarded only to youralready faithful, loyal, readers/commenter's who have been here awhile(and the reason I say that,is that there's nothing worse than seeing a brand new reader with only 1-2 posts keep on getting all the goods like in the past, cause I believe the vast majority only post to win & then don't bother to come back once it's over with).
#3-A. Newcomer's with less than (X amount) of posts, over various threads(not just the raffle threads)should be excluded from any raffle until they've shown us that they're not just here to pick up freebies here.
#4. Utilize that "10 points" system you have now for each comment, into something more meaningful.
Some thoughts on it.... for example:
For every 500 or 1000 points(or whatever amount) on the plus side, the site gives out something, or does something tangible for that poster(maybe an award???).
In the same token, if a post gets deleted, that 10 points is deducted from the overall amount.
And if there's a certain number of post violations that cause at least 50 points(or more) in deductions, then that person will be barred from it(or for a set period of time).
#5. Some sort of rolling, real-time, "comments" counter.
It would help show how productive to the site you've been by how many comments you've actually made over time. Every time you posted, it would click up by 1 number each
It would sit right there on the right side of your username like this.
Example:
World 1683
BikerSaint 447
Etc, etc,
Just my 2 cents
(Not that I'm expecting any change back, LOL)

No offence here, but..
About that third point - I would also like to win stuff. Everybody wants, but you can't just hand out goodies to the most contributing people. That wouldn't make a lot of sense.
I've been here reading the news since I bought my first psp on launch (now I have a ps3).
But it was first after a long time I made a user and even longer before I felt I had the balls to post my own thoughts on things. That means I haven't posted a lot.
Now I'm in the danish army and have been there for 5 months (reading psxe through rss-reader on my iphone) and looking forward to 3 months before I'm "released to the civil life" again which means - few comments.
Should my loyality to PSXE through 4 years be rewarded with nothing because I haven't posted a lot.
That's nonsense.
Hand out gifts as you want but think before making such decisions.

No offense taken, but in the same token, I think you need to keep re-reading it because I'm not sure exactly what part you didn't understand????
Now, I know that I may not have a way with words, but I think it's stated perfectly and it would make for a sound policy against a few freeloading leeches that have only come here & posted just to mooch freebies, with no intention what so ever to contributing anything(in any other threads) towards this site's future.
BTW, when I suggested #3, I didn't mean someone like you, or in your case.
Personally, I'd have no problem with you winning anything here because at least I can see you've post in other threads than just free raffle threads, so you're showing us you want to be a part of PSX's community, and not just trying to do a snatch-& run job on the PSX like a few have done in the past & then never to be heard from ever again.
I'm speaking of those all those brand new 1st poster's who only post in a raffle thread.
And by doing just that, they show us that they're only interested in quick-grabbing freebies & not becoming an asset to our little community here.
In my opinion, they're nothing more than freeloading parasitic fleas that are a hindrance to this site and it's community, and we certainly don't need them because they won't ever contribute even 1 single solitary thing to this site's existence and/or it's future progress.
The only thing it does do, is to hinder the site by diminishing the chances of all of the "real" contributors here from being able to receive a well deserved prize.
But with that said, I still believe that any new poster's should have an X amount of posts in first(whether it's 10, 25, 50, etc) in "VARIOUS" threads before they're even under consideration for any raffles.
And that way, it will cut down on all the fake site-posting moochers "who are only in it, to win it".
Also, I understand what you're saying about your 4 years here but, anybody who may have been reading at this site for years before they actually signed up(just as I did too), shouldn't count either, and not until they've actually signed up & made some posts first. Any "lurking" time before actually signing up just shouldn't count.
EXAMPLE, I've been reading here for a quite few years myself, but hadn't signed in till about a year ago, then introduced myself in 1 thread & started posting away in many other threads. So my "actual time" here was last year once I first posted, & not either of the other 2 years prior in my "lurking" mode.
If they're either not signed up(guest mode only), or have signed up but not posted anything, then please tell me how have they contributed anything what-so-ever here?
And FYI, I NEVER stated that only the "Most" contributing members should win, I said "ANY" member's, after they've had x-amount of posts(and that x-amount would be by decision of the site's owners &/or administrators, not made by me)
So Just as you can see here, I not only have been, but I still am, thinking very clearly before posting my thoughts(not decisions)
I hope this helps to clarify my take on it.
BTW, even though your in a different country, I am one in full support of the military, so I'd like to say..."thank you for your service"
Saint

oh, you mean from the site.
just keep the news coming and im happy.
O and how about some TV reviews?
im tossing up between a sony 46 inch XBR(because the 55 inch is close to 8 grand) or the sony Z5500 series.
the XBR is almost 1800 bucks more but uses LEDs, where the Z5500 has 200HZ motion flow instead of the standard 100 HZ.
o and not to mention the XBRs are 2 years old besides the LED tech, the Z series is brand spanking new, and icing on the cake the XBRs are imposable to find because sony stopped making them 4 months ago because the new model is releasing in april.
i would wait for those but there going to be even more expensive, more than 8 grand? impossible!
and the TV im replacing is not going to last till then, ill be surprised if it lasts till the end of this month.
curse sony and there shoddy TVs!

and the samsungs are dam expensive and dont really look that good, not to mention they only have 1 component input where i need at least 3.

Please let me change my e-mail address.
Game Database. I'm not sure if you can or not but the ability to add what games you own into some sort of game lists is a big reason and sometimes the only reason I visit some gaming sites. What I also sometimes like about vgc or gamefaqs is that users can add or update games in various ways. Set up is key here though. Finding a pleasing design layout is crucial for me.
Maybe add the standard comment tracker (you should be able to go to every comment you made) as well post count.
I don't know how many visitors you get now but I think there'd be a lot more if there was a real Home Page with the latest news, a few of the latest videos and latest forum posts. Make it even easier for people to get tho basic things on your site.
I think with the ideas you guys have that you're on the right track. If those are implemented I can surely see the site growing.

You guys use vBulletin as your forum software and haven't figured out the importance of a Remember Me checkbox yet?
It's extremely annoying to have to log back in at random intervals, it's probably the main reason why I don't comment as much here (also the fact that anything after the first 25 comments gets little if any response.)

It's just given me an impression that there's no point in commenting because even though the reply may be attempting to start a debate on the article, it's left unanswered.
Regardless, that was not the main point of my comment, but I'm glad I was able to amuse you at any rate :)

I like the simplicity of the site but an overhaul could take this place to another dimension.
It gets a bit busy at times especially thru iphone or Bloomberg.
You could try out diff formats on the community and run one of those polls on them.
The ads on the right tend to creep over the text when resizing.

#1-More psp news including updates of what's new in the homebrew scene. I know pirating is an issue but there's also some great homebrew games and applications that have come from it.
#2-Quote/post of the day being displayed somewhere on the main page
#3-Video reviews
#4-PSN store updates and PSN game reviews
#5-A review for 3rd party peripherals
#6-A weekly top 5 list
#7-A retro PS1 and PS2 round up...like posting up a review of an awsome game that came out 1/3/1999 =P or developer interviews of them looking back at what it was like for them creating the game

But that actually brings me to my suggestion/ request:
Is it possible to have the forums and the comments section directly linked? As in, when an article is posted on the main page it is simultaneously posted in the forums and all comments left on the post are also replies to the forum post.
The reason I ask is because some of the comments threads go on forever and develop into very interesting discussions that I think a lot of people like to get involved in, but after a few days the article is bumped off the main page and the discussion dies with it. It would be great to keep these conversations alive and accessible. I think it would also increase interest in the forums themselves.
Anyway, it was just a thought. I know www.MMORPG.com does it this way and I really like it.

This way, we don't know exactly which comments they're thumbing up or down, but we'll know the user is a troll when we see that they gave out 564 thumbs down and 2 thumbs up.

Another idea I had was for some type of petition service.(Thats the closest thing I can relate it to). Lets say that we as PSXExtreme users feel very strongly about a particular project that we would like to come to fruition. We can get together as one and communicate with a developer and or publisher or even a manufacturer and make some sort of class action request. Who knows maybe we can institute the creation of something big someday. You never know what can happen when great minds get together.

2) Comment tracking ... I go crazy trying to see how people respond to certain comments or questions (like facebook i guess)
3) Community rewards ... why not use positive posts and comments (thumbs up or likes) to increase member status (like a game) or at least for fun profile related "credibility"
4) Podcasts ... doesn't need to be an hour long but a few short minutes of vehicle rants or dating stuff or whatever what add a great personal touch
5) PSX-expo 2010!!!! :)

To expand on the comment section the site could use the points we get for some odd reason? and spend it on some virtual stuff the only thing I think of right now.
Smiles can be used which could be epic, maybe spend points on emoticans
