God Of War Composers Rock Darksiders Soundtrack

The time has come for action fans to make a tough decision: Darksiders or Bayonetta?

Both promising titles launch today and although Bayonetta has had the early review edge for some time, the first few scores for Darksiders have also been impressive. Furthermore, it seems to be geared more to the God of War followers while Bayonetta might satisfy those who have adored the likes of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden in the past. One other thing Darksiders has going for it: a kick-ass soundtrack. Composed by award-winning musicians Cris Velasco (God of War series, Clive Barker's Jericho) and Mike Reagan (God of War series, Conan), this music assortment should be dark, heavy and oh-so-very-fitting. According to the press release, this soundtrack features "60 minutes of original music composed by Velasco and Reagan and was recorded with a full choir at the world renowned Skywalker Sound Studios." Vigil Games audio director Jeremy Robins added that this score "not only encompasses a character as epic as one of the four horsemen, but helped define it as an IP." It's almost impossible to overstate the need for fantastic music in games these days, especially for projects that require a heavy dose of atmospheric flavor and attitude. The soundtrack is always such a big part of the action.

So today, make your purchase decision carefully. Both games are technically classified as "action" but as you've likely already surmised, they're quite different from one another.

It's Darksiders over Bayonetta for me and it's certainly true that music plays a huge part of the entertainment value in a game. Hiring this talent is certainly a move in the right direction.

You've got to be kidding me. They hired the people that did music for GOW, big woop. That doesn't make me go OMG I NEED this game anymore than if it was my favorite artist. A game lives and dies on its gameplay, not the background music.

Music IS important. You can have a great game, but lousy music will drag it down and make the whole experience irritating.

I'm sure some folks here can name a few games they've played, where they've decided to mute the volume and play their own tunes.

Also, if music in games weren't a big deal, PSX Extreme wouldn't bother with articles like this.

I never said music wasn't important. I'm simply saying it doesn't make or break a game. I'm pretty confident when I say ALL OF YOU would still be buying GOW3 even if it had the My Little Pony theme in the background.

Well I think corny or bad music can break a game.
And FFVII without all it's amazing soundtrack and theme music would've totally changed the impact it has on me now.

The atmosphere and fun you have playing a game will totally change with music.
That's why I don't like playing my own music to games that allow it, the composers made what they want us to hear - kinda ;)

Can't see myself getting Bayonetta at all, holding onto my redundancy money for the Heavy Rain, Dantes Inferno, WKC and a few others coming out soon. Don't know enough about Darksiders, we gonna be getting a review on that one?

Darksiders for me, i don't want to support developers that are sloppy enough to do a crappy port. Not that i will be getting either though, like world said i need to save my money for better titles.

I agree with you there Jimmy, I rather not have the game than have the downgraded form of it. Apart from possibly gettin teased by Xbots, you also prolly are buying something that truly isn't worth $60. I'm surely not supporting Bayonetta. I guess I am happy that Sega ported the game over to PS3, but shouldn't they have enough experience with the hardware by now?

Not sure if you are directing that toward me or not, but let's not go running around on my opinion. You have no idea why I'm not buying this game, and it's not really worth it to explain. So grow up. Before you direct that at me, think for a second, like I said, you know nothing as to why I'm not buying it. Bayonetta will be a much better game. I just happen to like that style of gameplay.
And to be on topic, for those who may say something, cool that the God of War composers are getting into other things, but I dont think it'll make this game any better. I'll wait for the better game God of War 3 when that drops.

Geez, carrying around this PC baggage sometimes gets heavy on this site!

IMO the genre is what determines the importance of the music. Games like RPGs or story driven games like Heavy Rain rely on the music to draw the gamer even further into the game, I get that. Games like GOW3 I really don't see the music playing a big role.

I'm all for gaming music, I own dozens of soundtracks. PC gaming soundtracks too Ben!

BTW I'm all for GOW3 with the My Little Pony theme, a boy can dream.

Got to disagree Vertigo, the music helps get you amped during the battles. Imagine slaying hordes of a-holes with no music whatsoever. Most people don't even realize the role music plays in their favorite games because it feeds so seamlessly into the experience that they don't even know it is making it more enjoyable.

When you're rollin through town in a convertible do you wanna play Low Rider or some crap from Hannah Montana?

and thats kinda worrying, well i dont believe them but if they are true.......
i never agree with reviews, according to reviews bayonetta is a 9.5 where i would say 8 is being generous.
ill wait till ive finished darksiders, but seriously if bayonetta is better than it O BOY! am i going to be disappointed.
its going to take more than dantes inferno and GOW3 to fill that void.

Easy choice for me as I was never that much of a fan over either Devil May Cry Or the Ninja Gaiden games so looks like the Darksiders for me it is then.

May look at Bayonetta when it's down in the reduced bin further down the line, too many good games coming 2010 cant afford them all this year like I did last year.

I have never been excited about either of these games. They just don't seem that entertaining.

Maybe someone can convince me otherwise after they've played them.

But for now I'll stick with UC2, MW2 and ACII....they all have alot of life left in them.

Yeah. Music is more important in games than some people make it out to be. A game functions at its best through the collective efforts of many elements. Gameplay, controls, cut-scenes implementation, pacing, character design, dialogue/monologue, enemies with high AI, background, and of course music. A game isn't really great unless it balances out most if not all of these elements and more. Uncharted 2 did a lot more than some people may think. It might have been visually stunning but there is a lot more to that game than people may realize.
