EA: "Major MMO" Will Launch Some Time Next Spring

As more people flock to online multiplayer games, MMOs should - by default - become more and more popular.

And it seems EA will provide us with a big one in 2011, although they won't put a name to the hype just yet. As reported by Joystiq, EA CEO John Riccitiello said the company is planning to launch a "major MMO" in the spring of 2011. This came during the publisher's reduced earnings conference call yesterday and it already has everyone thinking: could this be BioWare's massive project, Star Wars: The Old Republic? The official site has plenty of info if you're not up to speed just yet, and it's definitely a game that will appeal to all fans of the legendary movie and game franchise (just don't confuse it with a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic II, or something). On the other hand, they could be referring to either APB or Need for Speed: World Online, two projects that have yet to snag the industry limelight. We'd almost like to think it's one of the latter two titles, just because we had hoped to see The Old Republic some time this year.

Either way, we'll have to wait for the announcement; whatever it is, EA is banking on it to do well next year.

If The Old Republic doesn't release this year, does that mean we have to see the whole Bioware team dressed up as Jedis at E3 again?

I don't quite understand the definition of MMO. Does MAG qualify to be an MMO? or is it only RPGs?

MMO is massively multiplayer online. MMORPG is that in an RPG sense. MAG does qualify as an MMO just not an MMORPG. Anything where a massive amount of people are playing on the same server simultaneously is considered an MMO it just so happens that most if not all the MMO games out at the moment are RPGs

Isn't also a persistent world (playfields, server side) one of the characteristics of a MMO? And personally I'd thought that it would have to be more than 255 players to qualify for that title. I'd assume thousands, but then again I've only got experience with mmorpgs.

I'm sure they'd love to get a "World Of Warcraft"-type MMO game succeeding on the consoles. That game is huge on the PC.....could you imagine the cash flowing in from a decent one on the consoles?

We were promised Free Realms but we're still waiting.

Those of us who have tried Free Realms can tell you you're not missing much since it's primarily for the younger crowd. And it's been done before on consoles. Phantasy Star Online was a fairly decent title. And is still playable on Xbox, PC, and Gamecube.

Yeah no kidding. Cooking and dog training doesn't exactly make a thrilling MMORPG, but that's my point. Being such a simplistic game, why don't we have it yet?

I really want to see an mmorpg with real time battle. Like in Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 2. I love DAO and am aboot halfway through my second playthrough, but I'm kinda bored of the whole attack and watch till the battle is over. If Demons Souls was an MMO that style would be PERFECT.

Demon's souls would be amazing as an mmorpg.

OMG imagine a Kingdom Hearts fighting style MMORPG on tha PS3, yeah, awesome. Probably doesn't fit this MMO though, seeing as it is not made by SE...
Would be cool though, in my mind at least.

i would only play a demon's souls MMOrpg, or that DC Universe in development. And the service better be free, or at least cheap.

Gotta pass, I hardly have enough time or money for all the great SP experiences. I'll get into MMOs when I win the lottery and can sit on my can all day at home.

World,
Damn, if I ever hit the lotto, I'd build a humongous gaming hall & widescreens hooked-up to consoles, running all along the walls.

And then I'd wrap my dream house all around it.

*sigh*

The thing is I honestly struggle with is where do people find the time to sit for hours and hours on MMO titles... is it really true that some just don't have lives and play day after day on these titles.

I struggle to find time for a couple of hours of gaming a week, if that...

M!

meh, just give is star wars the force unleashed 2 already!
im probably the only one who enjoyed the first one, very good game except FAR! to short.
hopefully this time they make the game 10 times longer, take weapon customization and force skill customization to the extreme, add many more combos, maybe have a few different characters to play as.
or even have it as 2 player online or offline co-op.
i LOVE! army of two, only because of its co-op mechanics.
i mean you can pick up a shield and get your friend to hop behind you and pop enemies off with his shoty.
i mean come on why has no other shooter copied that yet?
here i was thinking shooters have evolved as far as they could.
thats what killzone 3 needs, a team based system like army of two.
but seriously developers WTF ARE YOU WAITING FOR!
the amount of ps3 games that support co-op is laughable!

Well supposedly Rebellion is making it though no official news has been brought to light as far as I know. But if they do as good a job on Aliens vs Predator as I think they will, then Battlefront 3 will be well worth the wait. And I still play Battlefront 2 on my PC as well.
