MAG Is A "Tipping Point" For Gamers To Buy A PS3
There are plenty of reasons to own a PlayStation 3 these days, outside of the awesome exclusives that launched last year: we're looking at God of War III, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, The Last Guardian and more in 2010.
Ah, but Sony says we shouldn't forget one more. It's Zipper Interactive's uber-ambitious MAG, the game that shatters previous FPS multiplayer limits by allowing up to 256 players onto one massive map. Slated to be launched on January 25, Sony says this one will be a "tipping point" for many consumers to finally break down and buy a PS3. They also confirmed the UK launch date of January 29 (mainland Europe gets it a few days earlier), but they clearly want to make a statement. As SCEE UK product manager Phil Lynch told MCV magazine:
"MAG is a very important IP for us and definitely a key exclusive for PS3. MAG is a real statement of intent for us to engage fans of FPS games. With the successful Resistance along with Killzone 2 and now MAG, we feel we are a viable choice for gamers looking to get that much more from their console. MAG will definitely be one of the many tipping points for those who haven't got a PS3 to get one this January."
Lynch goes on to say that Sony's sales expectations for MAG are high, primarily due to the success enjoyed by similar titles in the recent past (several of which he mentioned in the quote above). He believes the FPS genre has become "much more accessible to everyone," which is probably true. Furthermore, the "unparalleled scale" of a game like MAG should result in plenty of curious and eager gamers who want to see the next step in the online multiplayer boom. Well, our hopes are high, too.

So with that said online only games will work. I know the socom franchise is pretty big but still...

its very apparent though that it has become cool to hate MAG, I blame Xbots, and MW2 but I put over 100 hrs into MAG I know what I'm doing, how long did all you haters play; once, twice, 2 days. Not long enough to learn a beta with no tutorial.

Sadly, that experience is, or was as I haven't loaded up the current MAG nbeta and am going on my experiences in the previous more closed one, a very rare one. I must have played thirty or forty ,matches and it happened to me only twice that I really recall-and I'd remember if it had happened more because it was a great thing when it did?
the issue, sadly again, is down to those playing MAG in ways that the developer didn't want or intend. It's clearly a result of so many people who like shooters liking COD way too muchand, for god knows what reason, thinking what works in that game works in this one too! We had it with the COD babies(and by that I do NOT mean anyone who really likes COFD at all!)crying about the "broken" KZ2 controls which, in fact, were amazingly good, gave a feeling of weight , heft and realism to the guns you used-and they cried about it because they couldbmn't just play it like COD nd get winning-they refused to learn a new skill and besides that failed to imagine anyone else might like a challenge(unlike themselves)and that it actually helped give KZ2 it's own special identity.
It's a similar thing with MAG as people think they can just run and gun or camp the way they do in COD and in MNAG that doesn't just hamper their progress in game but also spoils the experience for others wanting to take their orders and finish their FRAGOS which makes the game incredible rather than a confusing mess which it can deteriorate into quickly with people trying to go all lone wolf on the squad.
Hopefully, MAG won't suffer from too much of the rubbish it gets now(again with comments online that because it doesn't play exactly like MW2 that it's not right in som way-some gamers just won't accept that sometimes, just sometimes, a game just isn't one they're going to like unless they put the efffort in. MNAG isn't a game for the selfish gamer anyway and MW2 definitely is with it's million perks and killstreak benefits, no it's a strictly team based game feeding into the wider onscreen conflict and byond and Zipper NEEDS a lot of gamers around who "get" the game to make it workable. I'm willing to support MAG to the hilt. I'm a TF2 player and have to say that MAG is just as good in it's own way and better in some when it falls into place as, imo, it's a really fair game that rewards clever and skillful teamwork and gameplay from a gamer and his/her squad and platoon.
Honestly, if you liked Socom(through the years) or TF2 and enjoy communicating/listening to your CO and squadmates there's a magical experience to be had in MAG, seriously, and to me it's something far better and more rewarding than MW2 can dream of(as well as being far less buggy and laggy than that online mess even as an ambitiously sized beta!).
Will it sell like Sony imagine it will? Not in a million years but over time if it gets the tight community it deserves for it's amazingly special good moments then it could well be a good seller if a slow burning one as word gets around the Socom massive that it's turning into the game for them as players and squads and brigades start to earn their stripes and understand it perfectly.
No game on console has ever risked as much on growing a strong and committed user base-and it demands gamers actually think a little about their shootr and people aren't all either used or into that imo as they know and think they're good at COD and don't want to learn anything new.
Whatever, I fear lots of the knockers of this game are wrong and that it's actually the gamers not trying or not getting the game how it was intended to be played that hurts it. When people are playing how Zipper try to guide them into playing it it's a better and mopre appealing, more intense and more satisfying shooter than I've played in a long time.
I do think, if one thing could be altered to help this it's the controls(not that they're bad in any way at all)as they're more floaty and COD/Halo like than I thought they'd be(though not the auto-aim pick up and play end of that spectrum but more the generl feel of them in game)and a more studied, slightly slower turning character with heavier aiming would have suited the game more by encouraging people to think more carefully about their shooting and getting more in tune with the goings on around them-but what do I know?
In short then:won't sell a lot right off the bat but deserves to succeeed as a slow burner as the community gets to grow and understand more of what makes the game tick for each other and we lose those who were always going back to COD anyway! Seriously, those few special games are som of my best moments in my gaming life and i'm 37 and was gaming as a 6 year old and have never ever stopped gaming for any time at all in between!

By the way Ben I tried to sign up a long time ago but the link never worked for me and it wouldn't let me use the same email. I had to use my work email just to get in today and would like to cancel this so as not to get in trouble with "big brother". Let me know if there is something that can be done about that.
Sorry for the long post, been waiting awhile to talk to this highly intelligent community.

So what you will end up with is a big clan doing everything right, playing against some individual players getting their A$$ handed to them.
Doesn't sound great to me.
And I definitely don't think that this game will see consoles.

They truly replicated the atmosphere from a real war, which is easy death. That is also the reason that makes the game boring. There's a sweet point in the amount of players where the time to death is just right. Although it really set the bar for technical advancement, but they really overdid it in the game.

If not, then MAG just might anywhere as big as they think, once people get tired of others that aren't carrying out orders, again, & again, & again.

I think Sony should try to revamp the Socom series. Maybe a Socom 2 clone with polished graphics will sell quite well.

I just dont know why, but I think the scale of the game, and the potential of the game really draws me. This open beta has the Sabotage map which is 64 players and we keep playing over and over again. Surely those new comers to this game will feel bored and thought this game got no variety. See thats the problem, the 64 players map is not the only game mode offered by the public beta. You guys need to hit lvl 10 in order to qualify to play Domination mode which is the 256 players map, thats the time you guys can see whats the real meaning of Massive Action Game. Everything is so havoc and crazy and thats the best part. The whole point of the game is teamwork really. Even one squad can cause the whole team to lose. For example, when playing 128 or 256 maps, each squad is responsible for its own bunker. If one squad sucks, and let enemy blow the bunker, then that area of the map will become the weak link already. Thats where enemies all start to come in and take out other bunkers from behind and then it starts out a chain reaction, where they will take down the AA batery, the gates and other important stuff. For me, thats how I appreciate the game. If every single person in the game knows what they are doing, and follows orders, this game will be super intense. But of course, its impossible to get everyone to work together.
I know this game the animation and graphics are way inferior compared to KZ2 or MW2, but for me, its more of appreciating the chaos of the war zone, and feels more like real life war, where everything is just crazy and havoc. In most games, in the background you will hear like bombs and gun shots, but those sounds are all fake in the sense that the sounds are generated by the game itself, but not players actually doing the sounds. In MAG, every gun shot, or bomb sound you hear, is the actual sound of players firing their gun or throwing bombs. What zipper is trying to do is to let players immerse themselves in a battlefield, to experience the craziness and epicness of a real warzone where you have bullets flying around, enemy bombers dropping bombs, players parachuting in and most important of all, working together as a squad, as a platoon to win the war. What zipper intends on doing is providing us an experience as close as to a real war.
I know alot of you guys might not have reached lvl 10 and decided to give up on the beta. I understand the 64 player map can be boring over and over again. Thats what happened to my friends as well. But when they got into Domination, their perception towards the game totally changed. They were overwhelmed by the epic scale of the war, the intensity, and the importance of working together. This game can no way be played the same as MW2, in fact it requires more skill to play MAG than MW2, one of the reason is if you want to win, you need to move your ass around, you need to work together with your squadmates to achieve certain objectives and you need to follow orders. You will most likely not win a game or have the most kills by just camping.
Overall I love this game, whether eventually I will get bored with this game or not, remains to be seen, depends on how the developers continue to support the game with DLC or not. As for now, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but not without a few moments of immense frustration though. haha.
However, I hope you guys would give MAG a second thought, try to understand the experience that Zipper is trying to provide us. It is a very ambitious project by Zipper but it is by no means a bad game. There are alot of flaws in this game, but I believe Zipper will rectify them with patches, by receiving feedbacks from the community. Yet, this game has really alot of potential. This is the first time any game developer has attempted on doing anything like this, so I hope you guys could at least try to support it. By doing so, we are actually helping to drive the gaming industry forward by encouraging developers to innovate. If games like MAG or Heavy Rain are actually great games but falls short of sales expectations, game developers will be reluctant to take risks on developing new IPs or they will be afraid to create innovative games.
For starters, it might get frustrating at first but just give it a few try to adjust to it then should be fine. But if you guys really don't like it, then I guess MAG just doesn't suit you guys. Honestly, I don't expect alot of people to like this game though. I can only advise to be patient while playing this game and to follow objectives.

one other thing, how come FPS is the only genre where we have people commenting extremely aggressive things like, MAG SUCKS!! MW2FTMFWMF!!!11 but this rarely ever happens at all with any other game genre. i may be wrong, but it seems to be a trend, i noticed.
for the record ill be getting MAG, i liked the beta. the raven maps were pretty cool, fighting in the jungle, and i liked the shadow effects. and no lag, which amazed me. should alleviate any FPS urges i get this winter.
but then WKC and SO4 come out...and well there goes all my gaming time :)

sorry sony but i would be more likely to buy a ps3 for Hanna Montana! than mag.
i think there forgetting most people who play these types of games are hardcore PC fans, and this certainly is nothing new to them.
to consoles its a revolution, weve never seen so many players in one game but the PC well they look at 256 and laugh their heads off!
please zipper.
PLEASE! just go back and make us another socom game.

watch a video of MAG it looks so fast paced and fun, watching it makes you want to play it, but playing it does not have the same effect.
i guess it could bring in new customers if they have not tried the beta.
theres a million and one titles they could of released that would of had a much larger impact than MAG.
but theres a million and osyphon filter of socom to name a few.
when people go out to buy a system new IPs are the last thing people going for.
im sure its safe to say 99% of people interested in buying a ps3 has either owned a ps1 or ps2 so they should be fairly familiar in its established IPs.
so when buying a new console thats the first think there going to search for.

And I have to say that it's not just the exclusives either. As a PS2+PSP user and a fanboy, I knew which console I was going to own next, but was the cost was too high, and also the fact there didn't seem to be good enough games for it in general, and that one, compelling game in particular that'd tip me over (now I know how wrong I was). Grand Theft Auto 4 tempted me a lot, but the machine was too expensive back then. Ultimately, it was when I saw the early gameplay footage of Batman: Arkhum Asylum that did it for me.
Cheers to great software, to go with this gem of hardware!

it took me 4 days of 5 hours/day download to get the beta.
on my 512 - 2 Mega Max connexion, i didn't suffer any lag. i still haven't a headset so was weird hearing others interacting, while i was just another human bot in the pack :( ...
but even if i don't really like the genre, i felt like quite interested in M.A.G, felt same for KZ2 demo & now i want to try BFBC2 demo ...
so M.A.G can't be that bad ...
we'll see, i surely hope it works for Zipper, i may try again the beta (if it's working) & decide...
cheers!

Having so many players online at once allows a different style of play because you literally have enough players for about 4 platoons (up to 32 players per platoon) on each side of the conflict. Each platoon can have several squads (4-6 squads of 5-8 players). This allows the platoon and squad commanders on each side to set tactical and strategic objectives. The game isn't a straight free for all shooter, it's truly a squad and platoon tactics game.
It almost seems like a first person RTS game in a way because all the players have to think of objectives beyond their own survival.
I don't think that a game like this has really existed before. There have been attempts, but from my understanding of the game, this is a first. It may take time for gamers to wake up to that. Not only that but the hardcore FPS player who cares more about his KDR than he does his own family will have to completely re-think their approach. They may not even like the more team oriented goals.

I wasnt entirely pleased with the beta, but that doesnt mean I wont enjoy it. People have to realize it is a team based game, and mics are a must. With out communication your setting yourself up for failure! I really want this game, i really do but i might wait til all my roomates can get it also so im not alone. From my experience in the beta, i never got into a game where every one communicated and it always turns into a mess.
But I think playing with my roomates will turn that around! This game has the makings to be great. As I said before it could be the next Counter Strike. It might take awhile to get there, but if gamers realise how massive and the potential of this games longevity is with dlc, and maps, and it being a huge FPS MMO, this game could possibly rule the PSN.

I havent bought mw2 yet and with Bad Company 2 coming and maybe a new MOH, i find no reason to buy MAG, the name sounds kinda dumb, if i dont like the multiplayer, the campaign doesnt offer any better in this kind of games, previews dont look that good and that beta.... is the less expiring point of all (waste of time downloading those 2+ gigs). I could be wrong but i wont find out myself (or not yet), i'll let that part for the people who will actually buy and review this game.
Regarding the tournament, the winning price is great, so bad my country was not eligible and that i dont feel like playing this beta or being good at it. (tell me about and armored core tournament, then i´d be excited as i am with ac5 coming)
