Ubisoft: New Ghost Recon Must Be Better Than MW2

Ubisoft is expecting to have a big year but they also know that in order to emerge victorious, they must wow the crowd.

A highlight in Ubisoft's third-quarter 2009 financial update, Ubisoft says their "next big game" for 2010 is the new Ghost Recon; Ubisoft France CEO Geoffroy Sardin spoke about it during an interview with GameKult. He says the company expects the anticipated title to be a "blockbuster" but in light of recent releases, he knows it must compete on a high level. Said Sardin:

"The technological advances and competition are pushing us to do better. When you look at the excellent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in terms of content, multi and buzz, it needs to be level, if not much better. We therefore take the time to refine that title. But we have seen, played and it's just crazy."

Slightly broken translation there, but you get the gist. We're still not even sure what this game is called - it could be Ghost Recon: Predator - but we do know that titles like Advanced Warfighter have done very well in the past. It's odd that Sardin compares it to Modern Warfare 2, though, as Ghost Recon is always a third-person shooter. Perhaps it's more of a comparison to the military setting and an overall striving for high quality on Ubisoft's part; we just hope they'll make an official announcement some time soon. Man everybody and their mother keeps saying their game will be better than MW2. Honestly that wouldn't be hard to do, I think they just want those kind of sales ya know?

i wish these developers quit trying to mention MW when they're makin games. all they have to do is let the game speak for it's self. guerilla games made a FPS (killzone 2) far superior than modern warfare IMO without trying to immulate. they let they're masterpiece speak for it's self and it's one of the best fps ever made. these companies are havin an identity crisis ugh. no game no time soon will have the massive success as MW. these developers need to realize that

That makes no sense whatsoever. If wasn't that hard to do, why wouldn't we see a million games better/equal to MW2? Obviously, the money is there. Any developer would see that it "wasn't that hard" and they would throw a game out there to raise the stakes and get in on the serious cashflow.

My whole point is that you can say you don't like a game or whatever, but it makes no sense when you make a comment as silly as the one you put forth when it comes to a game that is one of the best-selling games of all time. If it were that easy, it would have been done a hundred times over. So far, it hasn't. You might say, "What about KZ2?" Let's say that game is equal to MW2, (which I do not say at all, won't get into that part right now), why don't the numbers prove this? I understand that some games don't have quite the funding as others, but we're talking about a MAJOR difference in profits. It's not a minor difference. (Don't factor in the multi aspect of MW2, just pick one console and compare the nubmers.) The entire formula put together by IW is almost impossible to beat. Even Treyarch couldn't do it with the same engine! It's a LOT harder (almost impossible) to beat the formula MW2 uses. It just is.

its not really about hate, its about how many far more superior games are being ignored because of the hype or die hards pushing for MW2. Frankly, MW2 has gotten boring for me. I'm already looking forward to the next game.

Yeah, there a few better games than Call of Duty, but I wouldn't say that as a complete package there are 'many far more superior' than it. there might be alot with a deeper story, lots with a longer single-player and a couple with nicer graphics, but when you put all that it has together, very few would come close to what it has. All of those things add up to an appealing formula for many people. Just because I bought the game, some of my friends bought and the fact we play the games online mode often doesnt mean we wont be playing Heavy Rain, GT5, Red Dead Redemption and so on.

Maybe there are some better games out there that will be ignored by the masses playing Modern Warfare 2, but thats their loss, but it doesn't matter because they are already playing a game they love. Sure other developers and games will probably suffer but Infinity Ward made a great game that can be enjoyed in alot of ways and thus sold well, they have achieved what every other developer wants, to be at the top of the charts, with great reviews and everyone else now comparing themselves to Infinity Ward. You should't be upset at people for buying a game they like, it's their choice and I reckon it was an alright one. Every other developer would love to be in Infinity Wards shoes right now, with massive sales, people loving their game and critical acclaim.

Something tells me if it were another game in Modern Warfare 2s position there would be very little problem from some of the people who visit this site.

What about critical acclaim? Don't critics tell us which games are good and not good (among other things). What was the overwhelming response from critics? Does that have anything to do with quality?

However you measure quality, Modern Warfare 2 turns out to be a quality game.

To me the Call of Duty franchise could never be a Metal Gear Solid or Grand Theft Auto, I would put it somewhere between the great and the good on my personal list, But I'll give credit where it's due, and just about everything says that Call Of Duty:MW2 is owed some credit and respect. When another game, say FFXIII drops to HUGE sales, great critical acclaim, all the other developers liking it, people are bound to stay away from some other games for a while, should I assume that game is or isn't quality?

It is owed credit and respect, but it is still not a massive chore to do better. I enjoyed the game, briefly, myself. But the AI, the graphics, and the gameplay could have been improved up and weren't. And critics are just there to help you make purchasing decisions. They are human, and susceptible to hype as well.

I still don't understand where you're getting the whole "it wouldn't be that hard to make a better game than MW2" idea from. You also said that IW didn't raise the bar at all. Have you seen how many different streaks there are? Have you seen how many new guns there are? Have you seen how many new perks there are? What about Spec-Ops? Are there any other games out there that come remotely close to the amount of quality variety offered in co-op for MW2? Also, people slam the campaign so much because of its length, and it is relatively short, but it's got some cool moments and it was fun. A lot more fun than the bland KZ2.

Finally, someone please show me what KZ2 does better than any of the FPS games already out. I've yet to see any of it.

In terms or graphics and atmosphere, the lighting, wind and environments, I thought Killzone 2 was definitely the leader of the pack. The weapons too in that game were great, although the rifles weren't particularly original, it didn't matter because they were all so fun to use and looked and sounded great. I often shot at walls just too watch the point of impact glow red. However in terms of story telling and gameplay I didn't really feel it did anything that other First-Person games, like Call of Duty, couldn't do equally as good or better.

MW2 is a great game ,but I wouldn't consider it the best fps,its the most popular.heck I got the game because of that.all my cuzins and frens were getting it.When they try to make their games better than the one on top that only give us the benefits of an awesome game.

My key's to success is simple. Give the gamer options.

I love Hardcore TDM, and that's all I play on MW2. Others do not like that game mode.

IW recognized the inevitable and gave a multiplayer experience for every variety.

I would also like to see the next Ghost Recon offer larger matches. If MW2 has a fault, it's the fact that the team deathmatch is STILL 6 v 6.

I totally agree - MW2 might have a mediocre single player, but they give you a ton of options in multiplayer.

Also the new spec ops is quite fun with a friend that knows what they're doing. I mean it's fun as hell to be in the AC-130 bringin' the rain, while your friend is running around on the ground.

And there are hours of MP game types for everybody. And while it may not be new, the ability to level up both yourself and your weapons and perks will keep people coming back.

MW2 would be nothing without it's online gameplay. If MW2 had been only about single player...it would be just another FPS and sales would have been average. But, Activision gets the picture and realized that ONLINE gaming is a huge draw, especially if you give hundreds of thousands of people new objectives and rewards. Add to that, DLC, and you've got a game that has longevity and a fairly dedicated following. In order for Ubisoft to capture that market, they need to really figure out how to capture an excellent if not better online gaming experience. Give xbox and sony equal treatment, dedicated servers, and plenty of DLC and patch support and you might have a winner. I know...but a person can dream can't they.

that's why tech booming is good, im sorry, but MAG... 128 on 128. i think that slightly beats 6 v 6. best part is, it starts 8 v 128 (your part of an 8 man team, and could potentially fight any of all 128 players, you might see two teams only and fight only 24 players for 5 minutes or something) which becomes 16 v 128 (16 squad versus potentially all 128 like before) and that continues to double til 128 v 128. EPIC strategy.

I agree with World, it has to be the sales they are concerned with. I mean, are sales more important than critical acclaim? I don't believe topping MW2 game play wise, or plot wise will be hard to do, MW2 screams MEDIOCRE. Honestly I don't believe MW2 set any bars higher, if any FPS shooter did, it was Killzone 2.

Remember MW2 does have a few third person view MP modes. Personally, I couldn't get into that view (for MW2).

Also, I'm one of those that doesn't really care for TDM, I prefer other objective based MP modes like domination and capture the flag. I'm sure IW, through the telemetry they receive, will drop some MP modes and think up others.

Considering GR has always been a third person shooter, i think ubisoft is aiming in the wrong direction.

As for sales maybe they want to achieve that, and as far as being military based i get the point. But really MP FPS' are what everybody is looking at. Not saying thats right at all, becaus UC2, and all the Socoms, and even previous GR' have all been great, or atleast faired well.

Developers should always aim higher than their competition.

GR's SP campaigns have always been decent. With MW in mind, it's the MP that needs to be amped up now.

Sweet! Maybe I will get around to finishing the first one before the next one comes out. The MP experience is what is really goint to take this franchise to the next level. If they can make that work, I would use the MP as the demo.

@Ben,

Ghost Recon isn't all third-person. It's actually mainly first-person. The only time you're in third is when you're in cover.

On a side note, never was a huge fan of this game because of how much camping is allowed with the cover system. Now, before anyone flames me and says that there is major camping in MW2, I know that is a huge issue with that game, but this allows you to take it to another level. You can see people without having to look around the wall. At least in MW2, you HAVE to peek around the corner and if the enemy is fast enough, it gives him the chance to hit you.

With that being said, my brothers always get into this game and I will probably get it to play with them. It's technical and it adds a different pace.

i played rainbow six vegas 2 online which is basically the same thing, correct me if im wrong. All i saw was a race to the highest point of the map and just camp that stairway, even on team deathmatch.

well your not setting a very high benchmark there ubi.
i seriously hope its 10 times better than MW2, and im sure it will be because i really enjoyed GRAW2.
but screw GR, i want a new rainbow six game.
every shooter i play just makes me want to go back and play rainbow six vegas.
if it was not for bioshock, that should of got GOTY.
O and the darkness, i loved that the death scenes were so creepy!
what happened to the sequel?
i remember hearing something about it like august last year and nothing since then.
no official announcements, no teaser trailers, nothing.
just a rumor that its in the works, i mean come on the first one was such a good game how cant you release a sequel?
guitar hero, halo, all the crappy games get sequels.
but the pure gold games like BLACK, the darkness and others are left out in the cold.
its a travesty! i tells ya!
