God Of War III Runs Natively At 720p With 1080p Upscaling
In addition to a bunch of new screens, we've got some new technical information concerning the massively anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusive, God of War III.
It was a focal point over at the PlayStation Blog yesterday, where we got several new mouth-watering screens along with the confirmation from SCEA Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein that the game will run at a native 720p high-definition resolution, with the option to upscale to the maximum 1080p. Furthermore, as noted by Examiner.com, GoWIII director Stig Asmussen told an Arabic gaming site that the frame rate will vary throughout the experience. Depending on the situation and the action on the screen, the frame rate will range between 30 and 60 frames per second, which isn't exactly surprising. We already know that SCEA's impending masterpiece has a good chance of once again setting the bar for graphical superiority, most recently set by Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. And by the way, if you're a fan of brilliant visuals, you'll definitely want to check out another PS3 exclusive in February, Heavy Rain.
In case you've been living under a rock on Mars, God of War III will release in March. It should be out only a week after Final Fantasy XIII, though, so the competition should remain steep.

There really doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the two except when it comes to HD DVD or Blu Ray. Apparently when you have a movie using solely blu ray technology, the standard resolution is at 1080p, when you watch a blu ray movie on a 720p set up, it has to scale down. It will accept the blue ray signal but is has to down convert the format to a lesser resolution, therefore robbing of a "true" HD experience.
As for gaming I'm not sure, if the game is set in stone at 720p and can be upscaled to 1080p, then maybe it reacts the same way with a blu ray move (1080p resolution downscaled to a lesser resolution). So if you want to play it at 1080p, use a tv with that type of resolution. IF you have a 720p, use the set resolution.
I mean i can barely tell the difference between the two, you have to be sitting inches away from the tv though.
Please, anyone feel free to correct me hahaha

me and my father have the exact model laptops, only difference is he broke his screen and to save money bought a 720P screen opposed to the 1080P original.
watching bluray movies on my laptop looks much better and clearer than on his one.
switch to a 20 inch PC monitor and the differences are quite clear.

i remember back just after E3 last year stig was asked if the game will run at 1080P 30FPS or 720P 60FPS and he said at the moment we have not got it to 1080P yet, though there is still plenty time so were trying to get it to the 1080P 60FPS.
and they have achieved neither :(
whats the point in having a full HD TV if very few take full advantage of it?
remember the 1080P 120FPS father ken promised us?
3 years after release and we barley have any games that run at native 1080P, let alone one that runs at 60FPS, let alone one that runs at 120.
im starting to wonder if it was just PR talk, as usual.

I doubt it'll ever be 60 fps, unless that becomes the standard, like 720p is the standard. Developers would rather reserve that extra power for extra AI enemy in GOW3 or a much larger scale in the environment.

Well, for starters, most peoples' TVs only go to 720P, maybe 1080i. Much like you indirectly pointed out, most people will buy a 720P TV instead of a 1080P TV because they are cheaper. Usually said people don't feel the need for a 1080P TV since the average consumer doesn't notice much of a difference between 720P and 1080P, except on large displays. Those large displays have only recently become affordable for the average consumer.
Besides that, there many people who don't even want HD. Upscaling is just fine for them. That's why Santa Monica will offer upscaled 1080P instead of native 1080P. Why do all that work for such a small audience who can truly appreciate it?

every single TV i have looked at recently and theres allot because im thinking of getting a new one for my room.
every single TV these days is 1080P, a standard 32 inch would set you back 700 AUD depending on the brand.
a cheapie no name brand would cost you 500 and there still 1080P
im a little worried on the graphics side.
GOW 1 looked amazing for its time, GOW2 came out and blew everything away it looked better than some ps3 games for crying out loud!
i dont see the jump in GOW3 that we saw from 1 to 2.
and as far as im concerned santa monica are the best developers out there, if they cant do 1080P 60FPS than who can?

720p represents 1,280 pixels displayed across the screen horizontally and 720 pixels down the screen vertically. This arrangement yields 720 horizontal lines on the screen, which are, in turn, displayed progressively, or each line displayed following another.
1080i represents 1,920 pixels displayed across a screen horizontally and 1,080 pixels down a screen vertically. This arrangement yields 1,080 horizontal lines, which are, in turn, displayed alternately. In other words, all the odd lines are displayed, followed by all the even lines.
1080p, on the other hand, represents 1,080 horizontal lines displayed sequentially. This means all lines are displayed during the same pass. 1080p is the highest quality HD display format.
Visually, there is very little difference to the eye of the average consumer between 720p and 1080i. However, 720p can deliver a slightly smoother-looking image, due to the fact that lines and pixels are displayed in a consecutive pattern, rather than in an alternate pattern. Now when comparing 720p to 1080p it's a tad bit more noticeble but really you would have to have very good vision or a good trained eye to see a difference.Maybe if you had two tv's exactly the same running side by side then you would notice and you would still have to look for small differences.
Hope all this helps.

Sorry ffrulez, gonna have to give you thumbs down on that one. Since the 360 made SE cut out a BIG majority of the original content, I can definately wait for FFXIII. GOWIII, however, is a PS3 exclusive and a LONG awaited trilogy of the GOW series. I agree, however, that FFXIII will be pretty good. Just not as good as it could have been...

I wanted Native 1080p, but this will suffice. Either way it going to look amazing. The fact that the fps don't dip below 30 makes it amazing considering theres supposed to be upwards towards 50+ enemies on screen, sweeeet!

also, whoever only buy one of them is because they dont like the other genre, NOT because one game won over the other.
so the point is -- there is actually no competition between GOW3 and FF13.

but for those playing PS3 using LCD Monitor, and sit like 30cm from screen, the difference between 720p, upscaled 1080p, and native 1080p is very noticable

btw why always blame X360 for something not good happened on FF XIII?
you PS3 and X360 owners should be gratefull with the multiplatform quality.
We pc gamer, often got bad port for multiplatform game. and we not blame the X360 or PS3. its all up to the developer.
