Sony Santa Monica: "This Is Not The End Of God Of War"

Forgive us for lambasting you with frequent God of War news but with the development team speaking out on a variety of topics, we're seeing a ton of worthwhile headlines.

The most recent piece of info involves the future of the franchise. As some of you already know, God of War III marks the end of the trilogy, as SCEA has revealed in the past. However, we also know that GoW is far too massive to simply abandon; Sony will most certainly want to keep benefiting from these installments well into the future. So the question is, what is the team planning to do? Well, we receive an interesting reply from Sony Santa Monica Studios Director of Product Development, John Hight, who spoke about the days after GoWIII in a GamerVision video interview. Firstly, he clarifies that this third entry is a direct sequel; it starts right where the last title leaves off. Secondly, he talks about taking advantage of the PS3's power and mentioned the dynamic environments, like the Colossus level. Thirdly and finally:

"This is not the end of God of War. This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're going to continue making God of War games, we're going to be very careful about what we do. We're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted..."

It'll be interesting to see how they continue to pursue these games. Will we get a new hero if Kratos' story is complete after GoWIII? Will it still feature Kratos, but in a completely different type of environment? Really, you can change almost anything in the cosmetic realm as far as we're concerned but don't go switching up the gameplay. It's so unbelievably awesome...don't mess with that, please.

Sony need GOW to push future console sales. I think the next GOW will be on PS4.

either way we know these guys at santa monica will continue to make kick ass GOW games.

Let's just hope it doesn't get absurd like some other game franchises.

Another GOW on the PS3 seems extremely unlikely to me. Let's look at the facts shall we.

1. GOW 3 is being released in the FOURTH year of the PS3's life-cycle.
2. Analysts are expecting the new PS in 2012.
3. Sony will be expecting something GOW related for the new console.

But maybe you're right, perhaps they could make another within two years, are even abandon the new PS initially.

I've just looked at the poll to the right and realised how many brilliant games that are coming out in the next two months! I need MONEY!

Screw what analyst say, like you said lets look at facts here. The earliest the PS4 will drop is prob 2013 and that's LATE 2013. But even that's hoping. That would make it seven years old which isn't that bad being that they did the same thing with the PS2. Plus. GoW launched in like Sony's 5th or 6th year and still released another on time. The reason for the long dev process for 3 was because they had to get used to the new sys, engine and essentially start from scratch. However, now that they have a great engine, all they really have to do is optimize is like Naughty Dog did for Uncharted, and look how grand U2 looks. Santa Monica Studios is not like others. What they say, they deliver as always. This is true from most 1st party devs, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Santa Mon, Guerrilla Games (one of these devs are actually 2nd party but it still counts). Trust me another will drop before PS3 is over and believe you me, its going to be EPIC!

We will. GoW2 was released late in the PS2's life span. A new GoW won't take as long to develope now that they have the engine they need.

FWIW Uncharted = Nov 2007
Uncharted 2 = Nov 2009

also Resistance = Dec 2006
Resitance 2 = Nov 2008
R&C FTOD = Oct 2007
(R&C FQFB = Aug 2008)
R&C FACIT = Oct 2009

and GOW = Mar 2005
GOW II = Mar 2007

In other words, there's no reason to believe a new GOW game won't be released by March 2012, which would be before the PS4, even if it does arrive in (Fall) 2012.

p.s. It'll be a Kart racer. ;)

I think they have time to release another God Of War on PS3. They have the engine already, & the hardware experience. Glad to hear this though, God Of War has a huge fan base so this is good for Sony.

I don't know when the future God of Wars will be on the timeline, but as long as they are as badass as the originals, (and exclusive to the Playstation) I'll definitely buy them

The only thing I do not want to see happen is GOW turn into a Halo-esque offering where they let the name alone carry the game and stop pushing the series forward. I honestly don't see something like this happening as the Sony business plan and ethic differ greatly from that of Microsoft. All the same it would be a great tragedy to see something of that nature transpire.

the GoW collection had a short film (extra in GoW 2) where it shows that Kratos did have a brother who didn't 'make the cut' to be in the spartan army. Maybe they'll make a game around that character (who seeks revenge on Kratos).

if they dont want god of war to be ruined/polluted then the first thing they need to do is stop the film. Hell, hollywood will never get the game to movie formula right because all they care for is the name and brand recognition it has among gamers, casual or hardcore.

yea. well isnt Dantes Inferno like GOW3 i mean its soo close to it that its almost taking the whole concept of that 'one and only style' of GOW... its a pretty cool game and all' but it sure is like GOW. If there is to be another GOW I think it might be his Brothers story the one who got sent to Hell and turned into haydes Ultimate Warlord 'It talks about this in GOW2 they where seperated as children and his brother was cast-out and ended up going to the underworld' now unless he is in GOW3.. then idk, but that would make for a good continuation of the franchise.

I'll be renting it at the very least; like I said before, it's a game you want to love. The concept of the layers of hell has always interested me as it does many others, and the gameplay is solid enough. Should be pretty fun, but I'm already going to spend upwards of 200 bucks on other games this year.

Everybody seems to forget that there are 10 years of servitude to the Greek Gods that Kratos went through between becoming the Ghost of Sparta and the first game. This time frame has only been touched upon in the PSP game, so there's plenty of room there for many more games.

If you remember in GoWII, right before you go through the gauntlet to get to the last sister of fate (one of my top ten favorite moments in the game) there were three paintings that foretold of a possible future. From the standpoint of GoWIII these are coming true.

Very, very cool news. I'd love to see some spin-off titles. For example, how about a game where you play as Ares and it shows you how he received the title of God of War? Of what about a prequel where you play as Zeus and it goes further into detail of he became the Lord of Olympus. There's so many different scenerios!

Dude, if they do that they wouldn't have much room to create something new, because those stories exist and are part of the Greek mithology.

Zeus became the Lord of Olimpus cause he and the Gods won the war against the Titans. His thunder was made by the three Cyclops. And he and his two brothers divided what they won between them. Zeus the skies, Hades the underworld and Poseidon the seas. It's all on wikipedia if you want more info.

What they did with Kratos was take all the myths we know, but shapping them as the liked. Since nowhere in Greek mythology exists a Kratos (tough Kratos mean strength in Greek) they could do whatever they wanted with it.

If they do what you propose, then it'd just be another greek mythology title, cause they would be recreating what we already know

By entering Kratos into the mythos of Zeus and his "family", Santa Monica Studios have already changed the original mythology. Who's to say they couldn't tweak Zeus and Ares' back-stories? Even if they were to use the original mythology with the gameplay elements of the 'God of War' series, it'd still be awesome and tons of fun.

About an hour ago I was randomly lying in my bed listening to some music when I thought of all the articles and commotion surrounding GOW, not saying I'm not really hyped up about the game, but reading all this feels like we all have it in our PS3's right now, even though it's still friggin 2 months away and I kind of don't want to read about it, because every time another rumor or fact comes out it feels like the game is coming much closer, much faster than time can tick.
So please Ben no more articles. (You know I'm just kidding, just make sure to be the first to tell us any good news, like where to buy the European ultimate trilogy edition) But really it's still 2 damn months...

If anyone has seen the documentary series "Clash of the Gods" you get a good idea of where they could take these games. Though I'm sure everyone would prefer Kratos returning, I'm not sure that he will. Though I suppose they could just start a new trilogy with him, they never said it was the end of Kratos just the trilogy.

I secretly hope that they'll end Kratos' story with GOW3 and go out with a bang. If they drag it out too long it will stagnate and that would kill a tiny part of me.

Kratos is a bit better then just cool,biiiiiiig understatement.Kratos is a bad motherf*ck*r not to be Fu*ked with by man or God or he'll rip your b*lls and feed you them as he tears your frickkin head off all while mean muggin you with his 1,000 yard stare.Am actually a cage fighter and my real name is Ulises Rocha,i figured i have a Greek name and Kratos is so bad @ss that my fighting name is Ulises The God of War Rocha it sounda awesome when the announcer says it.

Although I don't know much about Greek mythology, or who they would use, I'm figuring that they might go the same way Assassin's Creed 2 went....just make it using a different figure.

Maybe just ditch Greece and go with Roman mythology (wich is similar) or Norse mythology, etc and so forth. I could see that happening.

Nice idea and going by that logic if they go that route, it could be possible that Kratos gets a new main weapon. Seeing that he got the Blades of Chaos from Ares and then the Blades of Athena. Would be interesting to see what they could come up with.

no, they need to stick to greek mythology.
if you watched the making of GOW2 docc you see kratos has a brother somewhere.
50 bucks says the next game will be based off him, because im 99% sure there going to kill kratos off in this one.

i have an idea hopefully santa monica picks up on... how about a game that tells about kratos' life, in DETAIL, before he became aries' servant. remember all the battles he was in in the still pictures in the first god of war? and maybe how he came to meet his wife? i don't know, just pitchin ideas. hopefully i don't get thumbed down for it

yea, if theres 2 IPs that i really want a sequel for there heavenly sword and haze.
loved heavenly sword especially at the end where you get really powerful and theres so many enemies on screen.
i doubt will ever see something like that again, it was completley utterly amazing!
i really want a heavenly sword 2.
shame ninja theroy own the IP rights, and they dont want to do a sequel for it :(

I played the demo and I was shocked. At the end when you fly the Kratos I was like actually moving, I was so into the game. Great game can't wait for it ti release!

No they don't but what Sony need for future success is talented internal developers like Polyphony, Naughty Dog, etc. In fact its my hope when it come to Polyphony that they move beyond Gran Turismo and promote Tourist Trophy as their new flagship franchise.

as long as they keep everything exclusive to PS3 and future consoles and keep with the gameplay I'll continue buying this series. Just switched my preorder to the GOW III Special edition watched some of the documentary and it was great so I would like to watch the rest.

seriously, as if sony are going to end one of there most popular series after only 3 games.
it would be like ninty ending mario, or M$ ending halo only after 3 games its not going to happen!
where i am a believer of its better to go out with a bang, than stay around to see your game go stale.
