Sony Doesn't Regret Keeping God Of War II On PS2

God of War II launched for the PS2 in March 13, 2007, nearly four months after the PlayStation 3 landed in the US. At the time, many wondered by Sony didn't wait to put the much-anticipated sequel on their new console.

The question is, after having to wait over three years for another God of War to finally end up on the PS3, does Sony regret their decision? Wouldn't it have made more sense to produce such a groundbreaking title for the powerful new system? Well, according to Sony Computer Entertainment's senior vice president of product development, Shuhei Yoshida, he says there was plenty of internal debate on the issue. In speaking to Game Informer, Yoshida spoke about how developers could really take advantage of the PS2 after five or six years of becoming familiar with the hardware. Said Yoshida:

"We had a lot of debates about it, actually. I always firmly stood by keeping it on PS2. Many people, including marketing, suggested that maybe it should be moved to PS3. What I believed was that God of War II would be the best-selling and best game of the year. We had always seen that, at the launch of a platform, the developer has to spend a lot of time becoming familiar with the platform and software tools. Technical issues take up a lot of the development, perhaps leaving less time for really polishing the game. Towards the end of a platform is when you see really great games, after developers really begin to understand the hardware."

He went on to say that he believed the Santa Monica team could "complete their vision" on a console "they totally understood." At the end of the day, Yoshida says the company has never regretted this decision; after all, GoWII may very well be the best game in the PS2's vast library (or at least in the top 5) and besides, would you have wanted to risk a sub-par sequel on a brand new piece of hardware the devs weren't totally checked out on...?

Keeping GOWII on the ps2 was the right thing to do, especialy with how the ps3 launch turned out. The game is just too good to have limmited it to those "wealthy" enough to own a ps3 at that time. Now that the God Of War Collection is out, I think we have a pretty good idea of how GOWII would have been if released on the ps3... eons ago in computer years

A good point, though frankly if God of War II had launched on PS3 you'd better believe I would have found $600 SOME where ;)

You can't argue about the quality of God of War II -- one of my all-time favorite action/adventure games, right there with Symphony of the Night. It would have been exciting if it had launched on PS3 instead, but considering how steep the learning curve has proven to be with PS3 -- it took a WHILE for genuine blue chip releases to start hitting the streets -- we can safely assume it would look nowhere NEAR as great as God of War III appears to be.

I think PS3 would be in a better place now had they had maybe their single biggest franchise available within a year of it's launch. But from a game quality standpoint, no qualms at all with what Sony gave us.

Definitely was a better decision keeping it on the PS2, especially since those initial PS3's all had backwards compatibility. GoW Collection on the PS3 was also a great idea.

I actually haven't played this series yet, and almost bought it last year. Now that it's all one 1 disc and redone to 720p, well you just can't beat that.

Would you believe I had to read that sentence three times to just figure out what's wrong with it? Man I'm getting old, or thick, or old and thick.

It was definitely a good thing, lets look at the figures.

Sony PS2s sold at the time = about 110 million
Sony PS3s sold at the time = around 2-3 million maximum?

Yup, getting to 5% of PS2 owners would earn them more than all the PS3 owners at the time.
