Taste The Past During God Of War III?

God of War III marks the end of the trilogy, which means the entire story of Kratos should be wrapped up with a pretty little bow. ...okay, maybe the bow will be black and dripping with blood, but you get the point.

However, what if you're new to the series or you missed one of the previous two entries? Or even if you played both, you may have forgotten important parts of the plots, leaving you a little confused entering the third entry. Perhaps this is the reason why SCEA will be including a recap of sorts in GoWIII; as revealed by a Spanish source as noticed by Examiner.com, SCEA will get you all caught up at the start of GoWIII. According to SCEA's Stig Asmussen, this recap is indeed designed for new players to insure they're not in the dark, and he also hints that such flashbacks won't be entirely in video form. This means we might actually replay portions of the older games and I'm suddenly reminded of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night...remember when you played as Richter at the start and fought Dracula? So maybe we'll do something similar when GoWIII kicks off. This probably isn't a bad idea, especially considering that any finale to a series is pretty ineffective if you're not familiar with the entire story.  We're not talking about long and involved role-playing plot lines but that doesn't mean the story isn't satisfying.  It's dark and quite engaging.

We certainly appreciate the thought but then again, we also hope they don't harp on the past too much. This may very well be Kratos' final adventure and we want to see as much new stuff as possible!

I like that idea, but imo any true GOW fan should play all of the past two entries in February before GOWIII is released.

Being a diehard GOW addict myself, I totally get what you're saying, but the average guy would just want to play the thing without any fuss. The diehards have way more fun with it though ;P

I hope the replay of God of War 1 & 2 isn't too long. I would like to play fresh fights and stories in God of War 3, not old ones.

Although it is interesting to see the same fight with more polygons than the God Of War Collection.

Recaps ... who cares about recaps. I wish they wouldn't do this. They didn't have to recap Star Wars for me to enjoy Empire Strikes back. Just let new gamers play an awesome game. Then they can think "damn, I should pick up that GoW collection and see how this all got started."

Previous scenes/stages from an earlier game in a series being used in the most recent game doesn't automatically make it a recap. Proper editing of these moments can allow for greater feeling and emotion. Sure you've played GOW and GOW2 but I doubt the emotion you've felt from it's most brilliant scenes hit's you the same as when you play it.

Adding certain scenes, if done correctly, can enhance your gameplay of the newest product.

True, but Asmussen IS calling it a recap, followed by "may not be entirely in video form" which Ben then points out "we might actually replay portions of the older games."

To ME, that's not worth it, and sounds like a cop-out to make the game longer using old material. But I suppose they know what they're doing and GoW never disappoints.

I do think however, that people will be upset if they finish GoWIII in eight hours and two of those hours are old material.

Good point, can't disagree with that. I'm sure any addition from previous games was made not to lengthen the game but add to the story, at least I hope. Either way I'm renting this game, FF is where it's at.

I know what you're saying Alienange. Some lame TV shows do a "last week on...." recap that last a minute or so, and it just comes across as padding. But as the Administrator said, hopefully they won't drag it out too long.

This is the next exclusive I'm looking forward to most.

Sounds like a good idea. I just started GOWII yesterday so I should be pretty refreshed on the story. But playable flashbacks are awesome.

This reminds me when I saw the second Matrix movie. I was with a friend who hadn't seen the first one. He had no clue what the hell was going on. I imagine the experience for him was crap (more so than it was for people who saw the first movie).

Definitely recaps are good. Even if it's just 10 minutes covering the plot, or reminding the people who hadn't played in a couple of years.

Recaps are a terrible idea. Anyone that plays or watches a sequel before playing/watching the original deserves to have the experience ruined.

LV is right. If you havnt played previous entries or seen previous movies in this case, its your there own damn fault. Yes they do deserve it to be ruined!

I have a feeling with GOW3 this wont be the case. Wether you have played the previous 2 or not this game will be absolutely amazing. The recaps will be a welcome addition, assuming it doesnt take away from the original scope of GOW3. Basically I'd be un-happy to see GOW3 become a decent length game with 1-2 hours of recapping of the first 2 games. When t could have been much longer minus that stuff. I highly doubt this happens though. My guess is it will be implemented very well.

Without a doubt seeing The Matrix Reloaded before seeing the first one. I wouldn't be friends with anyone that hadn't seen the first one (especially around my age).

BTW do you refer to Aliens as Alien2? That's always annoyed me :(

ive got a bad feeling kratos is going to die in this one.
i really hope that does not happen because it breaks the indestructible feeling of the game, without kratos i cant see GOW continuing and having the same epic feel.
kinda like what insomniac did with resistance 2 they really pissed me off with that.
take all the good parts about resistance, through them out, take all the bad parts and bring them over and theres resistance 2.
honestly insomniac were you even listening to your fans?
i can picture the meetings now.
"what gameplay changes can we make to resistance?"
"well, these parts our fans really liked about the game especially the weapon wheel."
"the weapon wheel?"
"yes, coming off our forums the fans really liked the idea of it, being able to switch on the fly."
"ahhh so theres our answer, the weapon wheel is out, rinse, and theres our new game."
"GENIUS! see sir, this is why your head producer and im a mere messenger boy!"
"yes, i know now back to your duties"
"YES SIR!"

Kratos dying. LOL. That's as likely to happen as being stocked by Eva Longoria. How about we stake a wager? Ben, here's a suggestion for a new poll. Will Kratos die in GOW3?

id take ya up but all my cash is going to games ATM.
not to mention TAFE is sucking me bone dry.
though, think about it there finishing off the series, this is suppose to explain why there are no more greek gods.
suggesting they got wiped out, surely if there finishing the series and finishing off the gods surely kratos got to go too.
if he survives than its not really the end of the series, kinda a half resolution.

They could easily kill Kratos. Everyone continually forgets that there are 10 undocumented years of service to the Gods in Kratos' past after becoming the "Ghost of Sparta", this was touched upon in Chains of Olympus. They could make several games in this time frame even if they kill him at the end of GoW3.

"I believe the implementation of the recap of the first two games of this series is a good idea. It gives people that only owned an original Xbox last generation, and until recently only had an Xbox360 this generation, but now have bought a PS3, the ability to witness what they had previously not experienced since they were without a PS2."

It was a difficult undertaking but I fixed it. Where is my cookie?
