Zipper Interactive Defends MAG's Potential Greatness
MAG hasn't received super high scores from the critics but Zipper Interactive isn't fazed.
The developer held a Massive Action Game event in London recently, which involved the Americans vs. Europeans. The first round went to the Europeans but the Americans struck back in the second round, resulting in a tie. And according to Games Thirst, MAG producer Scott Rudi told Jeuxvideo that his 256-player online extravaganza is the "greatest multiplayer shooter I know." Yeah, there might be a bit of bias involved but he goes on to back up his proud claim:
"It relies on three essential elements which are persistence, talent and leadership. We believe we have managed all aspects [of] the game and we hope you enjoy it. With our command system, we want to reward the most seasoned players. This is optional. It is imperative to become a commander, players who want to become but cannot because the others already perform this function, will have to wait for another party."
We admit there's some semblance of uniqueness to MAG (beyond the huge number of participants) but at this point, it may be tough to convince gamers of the game's superiority with reviews hovering in the mid-7s. At the same time, we have to remind everyone that a game like this needs time to develop; it needs time to find huge numbers of players, and let's not forget that updates and fixes usually come quickly during an MMO's first days. And yeah, this is indeed an "MMO," in every sense of the word.
Stay tuned for our MAG review...

Here's a link to their blog detailing the updates/fixes. Trust me and take my advice, READ IT!!! You wont regret it!

On a side note, this is a perfect example of FPS genres over saturating our industry and how they continue to kill innovation. Yea MAG might be a FPS but it's a MMO first and foremost. People need to realize that they can't go around playing this like any other FPS a la MW2. Sadly, this game could have been so much more but wont because of the mindset that people have already. They think that it should be played like a run and gun. That's like trying to play Demon souls like FF; it just wont work. Hopefully this game will eventually reach it's potential and earn it's spot in the limelight. Wake up gamer, we're kill the industry!

Looks like I will be canceling my mag reseration(I haven't picked it up yet) and use that money on mass effect 2. Judging by it's reviews we might have a serious Game of The Year contender. You guys should really consider reviewing the game.

This game has huge potential and considering its an MMO needs lots of players. When people see the recipe for this game and realise its a delight when played, they should enjoy it.
I will say this though in a sort of agreemant with you. The game is very iffy. I understand why it's gotten the bad or so-so reviews. But what lies underneath those scores is a solid game for the MP fan and FPS fan. The reviews I've seen (mostly on metacritic) do say it though it has faults, it does excell as a shooter, so...

thats the problem with MAG its a heavy based team game, you have to fight as a team, travel as a team run on your own and you will last 2 minutes.
but there is nothing i wont say forcing but enticing players to do what there suppose to.
i almost wished zipper did force people to do the objectives that way MAG could live up to its full potential.
i wish they would say if you want to cover camp, sit in one spot and snipe people off and not do any objectives than sod off and go play MW2.
its just infuriating when your the only one on your team doing the objective, and even more infuriating to see such a good game spoiled by poor management.
another prime example of developers making a brilliant game than destroying it with something so silly, small and simple.
if i had one cent for every millionth time that has happened id be the richest man in the world!

every game i played during the beta i would go to base A to try and take it over and i would get my a$$ kicked because its me V 32 enemies.
so i would go to B thinking all my team mates are there but nope.
i dont know what they were doing, maybe busy blowing up gates but there was no one on my team doing the objective.
out of the several weeks i played it i had maybe 10 games where i found a good team who worked together, helped each other out and had a leader who knew what he was doing and uses every one of his abilities perfectly.
when that happenes, when everything falls into place NO game is more fun than MAG.
but sadly its very, very, VERY! rarely that happenes.
maybe im being too hard because it was a beta and more people will be playing it now, maybe ill give it a try in the drought months.
now theres far to much to play, i need to finish mass efect 1, 2, bioshock, GOW collection and thursday the AC2 DLC comes out.
MAG could of not came out at a worse time since were not getting it till the 14th of feb, ill be busy playing dantes inferno, bioshock 2 and AVP by then.

What i hate is people passing on it because of graphics. Really? a game that main focus is on massive player vs player battle, which has been iterated a million times, and you pass because of a graphics. Nevermind the smooth gameplay and lack of lag, at least from what i played. as long as its graphics is a bit lower than MW2, which isnt that impressive compared to killzone 2 and uncharted series, they pass. Its their loss.

Give MAG time (at least 2 weeks), let the community will develop, then judge it. Besides most of the reviews I READ (I talking not just look at the score and moving on) state that MAG is worth your time and has a lot of potential.

Anyways, from what I've heard from beta participants, and what I've actually read in the reviews, this game sounds _really_ good. Unlike MW2, it's not for everyone, and will require persistent players to develop some social skills, but that's exactly the type of gamers I'm looking to run with. The reason, time and again, I'm happy with my PS3 (and the PS2 and PSX before it) is that Sony makes games for gamers, and makes different games for different gamers - Halo is a mass-market shooter, whereas MAG is shooting at a niche in the shooter market, albeit one I very much want to be in. Sure, it means that in the long run there'll be less 12-year olds trying to be heroes, or folk that just want to run around doing the solo thing, but that won't have me losing any sleep ;).
The only gripe with it that I have is that it doesn't launch in Australia until February 11, so I'm stuck running through Dragon Age again. Although this is no bad thing ;).

I feel that alot of fellow psx readers are very skeptical about this game. MAG's visuals and audio can never be compared to MW2 or KZ2, they are way inferior. Time and time again, I said that you guys cannot play MAG the same way as those two games.
I trust that Ben or Arnold here will give an all round well written review for this game. I believe psx will give it a fairly good score and help change people's perception towards this game.

I played for several hours last night and it is an absolute blast. The game play is smooth, the graphics don't suck, and the action is intense.
I have never had the feeling while playing an online FPS that I was in an actual war. This game gives me that feeling. What makes it special is the communication. No longer do you have to hear 12 year olds cursing like sailors and talking trash. You hear people trying to accomplish the goal. Sabotage is a blast.
I didn't play the beta, but I have several friends who have and they said it is immensely better.
BTW, you will have the chance to "prestige" so to speak once you reach level 60 and can change factions. But, whatever faction you pick is the one you are with until then unless you want to start over.

I believe Ben suggested socom at launch was 5 moving to around 8 after a period of settling in.
MAG's 7 at launch, is it a base indicator, and extrapolating, might it be possible that it could attain more of an 8-9 after bedding in?

The innovation in a console game to allow for leaders that have to earn it and for the ongoing 'Shadow War' that will change the way the life of the game develops (supposedly) and the 256 people in the same room. Over the next year or so we will see games that take from this and improve on it.

I haven't reached the level where I can participate in a 256 player battle so I can't comment on that. But, I haven't seen any lag in the other modes.
The shot in the a55 and run for 5 minutes is just not true. While it takes maybe 10 seconds on avg to respawn and maybe another 10 seconds to get back where you just got killed, I hardly think 20 to 30 seconds tops is 5 minutes. It makes you rethink just running in there and actually communicating to form a strategy.

a) not enough money :(
b) don't want another game to dominate my life
c) saving for GoWIII and all of the other fantastic games coming out soon
In my opinion, Zipper just chose to release this game at the wrong time, although I'm sure it wasn't their fault. It's hard to compete with Final Fantasy XIII and GoWIII, even if they are coming out later.
