Sony: Heavy Rain Risk Lessened Due To Faith In Developer

As we all know, releasing any new IP that has huge expectations from both the publisher and gamers alike is always a risky situation.  It's the way of business.

And according to CVG, Sony understands that Heavy Rain is a definite "gamble" but at the same time, they also believe it could represent a revolution for the industry. The game has already received a couple review scores but apparently those sources don't believe in respecting embargo dates... Anyway, the Sony product manager for Quantic Dream's inspired vision said it's all about having faith in the team:

"Being Sony, I suppose we have a little more luxury to take a gamble on more original and innovative IP - and Heavy Rain definitely fits that category. I suppose the risk is lessened if you have faith in the team behind the game and David and Guillaume and the guys at Quantic Dreams have really impressed, not just in terms of their back catalogue - Fahrenheit - but also in terms of the tech demos they showed in the run up to Heavy Rain."

In addition, she said they'd really love it if Heavy Rain snagged some much-appreciated recognition (provided that recognition is warranted, of course). She added that there "feels like there is a real groundswell of anticipation from gaming communities and trade alike," and they'll be interested to see what happens. We actually do respect embargo dates so we won't say anything until February 10, but we suggest being around for that day...

I have faith in this game turning out to be a system-seller, if it is promoted enough, & in the right ways. MAG being promoted on ESPN was/is genius, & the same adult crowd should be aimed at with Heavy Rain's advertising.

And why would sports nerds be interested in Heavy Rain? ^^

It should get some proper advertisement though, yes.

That right there is the reason I bought a PS3. Sony has always delivered the most diverse library of games since the original Playstation. They keep taking gambles, and gamers keep winning.

I just wish this game would come onto the market as a sleeper hit. The more hype I read about it the more nervous I am. I don't think it's going to live up to the unrealistic expectations many people have.

Have to agree with you there Alienange! I am still skeptical; we will have to see how Heavy Rain plays... not entirely convinced I will enjoy this type of game-play mechanic and interactivity...

I can see where they want to go with it... but I need to wait to see what the reviews say...

I second that. I liked it better when we were seeing something about the game like once a month. It seems like it is an everyday occurence that we are hearing about the game.

I will still get it on day 1 but I bet alot of people will be waiting to hear from friends and sites like this one.

@www....
I was there for that and I think KZ2 lived up to the hype for the most part. Once they worked out the bugs it was a great experience.

I think KZ2 had to run up the hype wagon just because it took them so long to create the game and it was "dubbed" the Halo Killer by many.

I realize that QD wants to get the word out about this game to as many people as possible but they aren't really going up against any other games as this really is a whole new genre. I am really rooting for this game and QD. As I have said before....if done correctly, Heavy Rain could be special.

This kind of risk is what David Jaffe talked 'bout some time last year when talking 'bout his relationship with Sony.

It has always been their motto.

ps1 is a testament to such risk taking. There was SO MUCH experimentation during ps1's generation. And probably even more during ps2's generation.

Heavy Rain will deliver

There's no such thing as a system seller trust me. There's just awesome game that sell fantastically. The reviews has been 90s on Metacritic so far. This game is going to be awesome and is going to get awesome reviews even if just offline. The game play looks awesome the graphics look beautiful. The replay value looks endlessly. Heavy Rain screams success and master piece. I'm buying this game day one no matter what. This an awesome gamble for Sony corp division SCE. BUY IT PLEASE.

just had to add this.
today i was reading the latest issue of OPM AU and they had a preview of heavy rain and the writer repeatedly called david cage, david jaffe.
honestly dont these people proof read their articles?
how humiliating!
anyway.
releasing a new IP is always extremley risky but if it works it paves the way for sequels to come, IPs certainly can be more beneficial than sequels.
i cant wait for heavy rain, i always really enjoy games with such a in depth complex storyline and heavy rain fits it to a box.
i cant see it getting too much praise though because of the pain in the a$$ controls, everything a QTE and apparently the first few hours are so boring they induce a coma!
i can see heavy rain being a love hate relationship, its going to be one of those games a few love but many hate kind of like assassins creed.
it wont be a instant hit where everyone loves it like GOW, kinda sad because i cant see this getting the recognition it deserves.
than developers will reflect on that and will be reluctant to follow suit because HR did it and it did not pay off for them so we wont do it.
we need more risk takers in this industry, people who dont take risks dont know how to live life.

I think i'll enjoy it the most because since playing Indigo Prophecy (If you havent played this game already I strongly suggest you do!) I've been looking for a game that I could liken to the way it captured me and made me feel like I was a controlling factor in the story, not merely a pawn in a set of events that gets thrown a multiple choice question every now and then as if he controls the pre-determined story, but as if the story was constantly evolving each action having a different effect on the outcome (not as vaguely as Fallout 3). I can still remember the terror I felt as I was racing to clean up the blood in a diner bathroom because my character had stabbed a fellow patron in the back with a butcher knife as a cop nonchalantly strolls toward the restroom! The consequences felt real and since then I've never experienced a game that felt that unique and original they were trying to show the world something remarkable back then but now they have the spotlight and I cant wait for the show. 0 risk here Sony I loved Indigo NOW GIVE ME HR! :)

I belive in them and i think the game will be ground braking and they can count on me they one buy for me i like the way they see things and risk to bring up a game like this they are not interested just in making money and recognition they want to teach us something with they games they want to tell a story and with this vision they donĀ“t need to worry...

Im glad that develops take risk with Sony because that just benifits us ,the gamers.

i'm really intrigued by this game. at first i was one of the sceptical people who thought it would be a sh** QTE game, but the early reviews have been optimistic...gamesmaster uk gave it 90+%, whilst it gave FF13 only 85...which semi-confirms my fears that the latter is going to be quite a disappointment =( bring back hironobu sakaguchi!

I'm not worried about this game. I know it will deliver. It will hands-down be the greatest single-player experience I've ever played through on the PS3 for the genre. Maybe it's the only of this genre on the PS3? Whatever the case, this game will prove to show the world that the PS3...only does everything and that the core gameplay of some games can amount to more than just violence if there are artistic developers out there with a vision.

Of course there's nothing wrong with a little unrestricted violence once in a while. That's why we have titles like Dante's Inferno and GOW3. (Rips off Helio's head in GOW3 demo) Yep nothing wrong with it, he just respawns on the next playthrough, see. To get his head torn from his body again. God...that's harsh.

Never got to play this game. I don't have a ps2 anymore so Indigo Prophecy will have to wait forever or until I get lucky and they remaster it for the PS3. I've only heard great things about this title and I'm sure it lives up to the reviews.
