PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Owners Lukewarm On MAG

It was one of the most ambitious and anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusives of the generation, but it seems that most of our readers aren't overly excited about it.

As most critics have noted, the game is hardly a masterpiece right out of the gate but as we indicated in our review, the game's future potential is absolutely off the charts. It has a few issues but few that can't be fixed by future updates and patches and besides, online projects are more like living, breathing experiences that continue to grow and expand over time. It's why I believe that by the end of this year, MAG will be one of the finest online games available. But for the time being, most of our readers aren't interested at all, while many others are planning to wait for a while before diving in. Only about 1/4 of those polled were definitely going to buy it this past week when it launched, but I suppose that's not exactly surprising. Personally, I think it's an excellent addition to the PS3's library of exclusive titles but right now, it's hard to call it a "must-buy" unless you're really into that genre.

Moving on to this week, we want to know how many of you have lost faith in Final Fantasy XIII. The hugely anticipated RPG has gone through a veritable gauntlet of negative and questionable press over the past month, and it seems that many gamers - even long-time fans - are suddenly very suspicious. The question is, has all this reversed your decision to buy the game, or are you merely a little concerned? Are you at least going to try it or have you decided to pass on to something else, like White Knight Chronicles? The latter launches this week, by the way. Vote away!

Wasn't really interested in mag mainly cause 1. its all multiplayer and 2. its a war fps.

Definitely gonna get FF13, its a day one buy for me!

Never been interested on multi-player only games, but I'll probably bargain bin or buy2, get 1 free it later, just to put into my collection like Warhawk & all the other MP only games.

Multiplayer? FPS? Around these parts those are big no nos.

From what I've read about FFXIII, it's not a day one purchase at all. I can't wait to hear what people are saying about it three months down the road. This one might get worse player reviews than X-2.

Will wait for psxe's review of FFXIII
Though, based on what's known I don't even feel like I wanna get it. Seriously, they really BROKE what I loved 'bout FF...

While it still has story, it doesn't have everything else I like 'bout FF. ANd don't get me started on the character designs (appearance wise)
----

Can't wait to get my hands on WKC!!! Did you guys watch the latest vid for that baby!? Building towns, EXPLORING the crap out of the game. Even some online for those who must have onlines in all their games....

Seriously though, I can't wait. That game might be the first true jrpg game we get.

The Final Fantasy games haven't been the same since FFX. When they decided to make FFXII the way they did I lost my anticipation for any upcoming games, but I still intend to play every one of them. Why? They are RPGs made by Square-Enix, and considering the small amount of RPGs this generation who would seriously turn down a game by one of the better developers?

Building towns was in their earlier classics, Dark Cloud 1 & 2.

They're bringing their use of the term "Geo" back - like Georama and GeoNet ;)

I'm not really big on online competitive FPSs. I get tired of the lobby, death match, lobby, format really quickly.

MAG seems like it's really different though. I really like the MMO aspect to it. The three factions battling for real time control of areas on a map is awesome. The battles are actually worth something important, not just kill/death stats.

Still haven't picked it up due to time and money constraints, but I'll get to it one day.

Still waiting for your review, although FF XIII will probably be a day one purchase for me. It was the reason I bought a PS3 in the first place, back when third parties made exclusives and the word of man was worth something... I still can't find what is suposedly wrong with a game that is more like FFX than FFXII...

You have to get used to the thumbs down. I have noticed that some people 'round here like to thumbs down but cannot click reply and articulate a response as to why they disagree.

Maybe they haven't learned to type yet. It is alot easier to click on the thumbs down rather than learn all those crazy symbols on a keyboard. Such is the life I guess.

I too will pass on MAG for the time being, but maybe down the line I will get it. I think an online only game (which I'm not into really) would still be the best way to go for an online experience because the online portion of other games just seems to die out as soon as the game gets a sequel.

Still getting FFXIII day one because well, it's FF! My hype for it is %0 thanks to the negative press but I need FF anyway. Even the crap that was FFXII was still a great game. WKC will come at a cheaper price point for me even though it may be the better purchase.

Right now I'm biding my time on a rental of Darksiders until Feb 9th when Dante's Inferno arrives to rock out and absolve me of my true action slashin needs.

MAG will need to grow, like LBP did.

I just wish these games (Warhawk, SOCOM, MAG) would include better training modes (e.g., bots for local matches) so noobs can ease into the game. I don't want to hurt my team because I don't have my settings optimized or because I don't know the maps yet.

Warhawk eventually added something, but WAY too late.

I will be passing on "MAG" for now and going for "Battlefield Bad Company 2" :) As for "FFXIII", as I have never actually played a Final Fantasy game I probably will not start now... however I appreciate greatly the artistry and work that has gone into making them. They seem to have been a superb series for the Playstation brand and many millions of gamers world wide have enjoyed them; what more can Square Enix ask for... generally a job well done... wouldn't you say?

If I want to get into the RPG scene it may be Demon Souls' or WKC, or maybe both.

On Wednesday I pick up Uncharted 2 for $45, new :)

cant say ive lost faith in either FFXIII or SE because i never had faith in either.
but reading that article last night saying there was no towns because its too hard really pissed me off.

seriously lifes hard get use to it.
you have to grab it by the balls and boss it arround otherwise it will do that to you.
seriously i would NEVER dream of saying that i would get fired on the spot.
SE are the laughing stock of the industry its really not fair that they sit on their a$$, turn out crap and make millions when there are hard working developers out there loosing their jobs.
SE sit there and turn out sh** and make millions, where other developers like pandemic or sony london studio produce some decent games and suffer heavy losses.
its a cruel industry thats for sure.
extremely fu**ed up when shi**y lazy developers like SE or red octane make millions releasing crap, but than great hard working developers are getting laid off.
i really want to become a game developer so badly im starting a course next week.
but seeing sh*t like this really puts me off it!
release good high quality games and you should be rewarded not the other way around.
why are red octane and SE getting paid millions to release sh**?
just goes to prove my theory.
release a game of a well known IP and it cant sell poorly.
honestly they could make a game of a dog eating grass and it would sell millions as long as it has the FF or halo name slapped onto it.

MAG has been overshadowed by the Battlefield Bad Company 2 release that comes out in a month for me. BFBC2 will fill my need for multi-player online thrills for the rest of the year.

FFXIII will be picked up later in the year, maybe when it is a little cheaper and I have time to dedicate to the story, not played any FF games before,or games of this genre really, so I have just started to play Chrono Trigger on my DS.

playing MAG this past weekend sucked, i was always stuck with low level guys who thought sniping was a good way to level up quickly. i think the RAVEN faction got a lot of these modern warfare morons. I actually played one match where my entire squad had no mics, all lower levels, and all snipers. I was the only one on my squad capturing the objective. my solution, i kept killing them until they moved or switch loadouts. as the squad leader, it had to be done, lol.

I suppose its a point of view; But I don't see why we all should have a "right" to be catered for in every poll submitted.

The way I read the question is that it is trying to gather opinion from those who were looking forward to the game, in the past, but now may be wavering.

If we had an option like "Never cared anyway". It will not be productive to the question's goal.

I think MAG will have a hard time winning hearts and minds of gamers.

The reason being that an average FPS fan is a person who doesn't really care for teamwork. And that creates a problem with them being told what to do and where to go. On one hand a person like this wants a bigger, badder battlefield (more players at once and stuff), but on the other it's beyond them that in order to succeed in that sort of environment you have to work as a team.

Your average FPS works a bit like snowball fight - there are two teams but it is pretty much chaos. And MAG is like a proper military operation. But in order to appreciate that you need a bit more mature approach.

Take care.

You have some good points there but I'm hoping there are gamers out that actually realise how the points system works. I seen squad leaders not setting up fragos or squad members not even making attempt to go to way points.
It'll be interesting to see how the players and game evolves.

Personally i don't know what anybody is talking about here in relation to those who don't like it, provided you like shooters. This game is awesome and i never played the Beta. I own and Love COD6 and while its different i keep the same methods in both games, whether my team have mics or not i work with them. They might not cover me, but i cover their backs i track when and where they get killed.

One thing i really love about this game is being able to hear people with mics who aren't in my squad through the screen while i listen to squad through my mic. This lets me hear enemy positions as well as sometimes funny banter. And the way the sound balancing is done it sounds very realistic.

Like any shooter, this game is what you make of it. There are alot of Snipers and i am one but given i/we payed 60+$ for the game we can play the game ANY way we want short of glitching and lagging(lame methods) just as you can use the great assault rifles and LMGs the makers give you.

Ive done some online and my only issue is negligible. I love the online lobby and MMO style. The customization is pretty awesome while not quite as indepth as Rainbow 6 Vegas1/2 its still fairly good. Updates to play will come in time and resolve any issues you have with the game. If you like shooters then it ought to be impossible to not like this that just by the measure of its player group size allowance makes for the most realistic "war experience" save for strapping and up and actually going.

Mag is an awesome game, just as COD6 is. I own both...im happy.

"One thing i really love about this game is being able to hear people with mics who aren't in my squad through the screen while i listen to squad through my mic." - provided they're in audible distance of course.

Ohh and given what we paid for the game(s) we can also camp as much as we want. Sorry, i just hear too much whining about this in COD6, camping is just another strategy, and one that is used in actual warfare when you need to hold down roads or areas. Those who wanna camp? Break out your tents, canned beans and brewskis, make it an all nighter ;)

Mag is truly epic in size. My buddies and I put in a 12 hour run this weekend and went through all the emotions. Our best match was domination where we were attacking and we were having trouble getting C. Our squad leader asked for someone to go back in the map and grab an APC so we could get it close and use it as a respawn point. We captured C with about 2 minutes left and it it proved to be the tipping point as we ended up winning with just seconds left. You just sense it, 128 players jumping up and down giving high fives, while another 128 were like"holy shiznit we f'n lost, how?". I also managed to make 6 new friends while playing and now have a clan of 10 players. This game is not perfect but it is fun as hell. SVER FTR.

by the way I like your reference to rainbow six cuz that was what this game reminded me of with the strategy concept anyways. You know like when the bunkers are tearing your guys up so someone orders smoke on the bunker to blind them long enough for you to flank it.

Ya rainbow had good strategy but like all shooters most people would just run around like kids with water guns. I don't use the smoke enough.

It's far from flawless but a little disappointing that more people won't give MAG a shot but comment about how crap it is without even playing it. Each to their own I guess. The game has so much potential.
As for FFXIII, this was gonna be my first ramble into the FF world but think I'm gonna go for WKC when I get back home in June instead.

MAG sounds like a whole lot of fun to me -- I just have way, way too many other games to play right now. Big ones I've been looking forward to. I'm still not finished Uncharted 2, I'm still playing through the Left 4 Dead 2 campaign with friends, Mass Effect 2 is being delivered this week, and Bioshock 2 comes out in a few weeks! I really hope I have a chance to circle back to MAG at a later date. I am just the worried the online community will have simmered down by then and the truly HUGE matches will be all but extinct. Hope I'm wrong about that...

I loved the beta and I wish I could buy every game that I think "looks cool" but these days I gotta be very picky about games because I'm living from paycheck to paycheck...if I'm lucky. Sometimes I don't have money at all so unfortunately as much as I'd love to buy MAG and many other titles...I have put money aside just for White Knight Chronicles cuz I've been waiting forever for it!

I think that the phrase "so gay" used in a disparaging way needs to be added to the list of things that are covered by Godwin's law. As soon as someone's level or argument descends to that, the argument is over and they have lost.

Honestly, that expression is so cliched now, and yet it's used so very, very often by online gaming urchins with a level of maturity that matches their shoe size.

In conclusion all I can say to the OP is your post is a big bucket of fail.

You think maybe you could dumb your post down so the OP can understand what you said. I think you have confused the poor guy with all the multi-syllable words.

Break it down for him Sesame Street style and see if you get a response from the poor guy.

Hi Kids, thanks for reading. Today's reply was brought to you by the letter's F and I. Let's try using some F and I words to describe the OP's post. I for intolerant, and illiterate, and F for frightening and fail.

Now, let's try a sentence using our words and the letters of the day.

The original post was an intolerant and frighteningly illiterate bucket of fail.

Normally I would not indulge just in case the OP wasn't a native English speaker. But, the last line of their post removed any doubt about the poster's use of language, maturity, and state of mind.

Never really got into final fantasy, had a scratched FFVIII as a kid that kept freezing in some cave but am interested in FFXIII and even more;Final fantasy versus 13.

How come if you say your not getting MAG now you get loads of thumbs down lol ?

A game comes out and it is not going to be everyones type of game. Not everyone is a Final Fantasy nut, or a Modern Warfare nut etc. Everyone likes different things. I also noticed people getting thumbed down because they have said something along the lines of I may get this at some point. WHAM thumbed down whats that all about ?

Just curious to see whats making people tick these days ? Could they be fanboys jealous as they cant get it on other consoles ? Who knows anyway let the debate continue. :)

i had to thumb you down just because i can. Luckily some of us still live in a free country where we can do things without explanation, we can say what we want wether it's right or wrong without the elites telling us how they know better and forcing us to conform or explain. sorry I just had to go there for the sake of going there.

it's all in good fun so don't take it personal, and if you do than that is your right, atleast for now

MAG is a phenomenal game in my book, that will never get the respect nor following it deserves.

As I type this, I am Level 18 Sniper, who is close to becoming a Platoon commander.

I also do not use a mic very much, but being a good listener is just as important in my book. Alot of players with a mic communicate well.

Plus, as long as the FRAGO's are set, most the people I come across are really decent with my "silent type" approach.
