Sony Zeroing In On Fall GT5 Launch?

When we saw that GameStop had pushed their date for Gran Turismo 5 all the way back to November, we were plenty surprised and even more disappointed. Then we learned of the official delay for Japan.

So the question is, when will it arrive? You've probably heard any number of anticipated dates from dozens of sources but right now, a fall release for the US and Europe is becoming increasingly more likely with each passing day. Could that November placeholder date actually be more accurate than initially believed...? According to GTPlanet citing Spanish website Canaria Al Dia, Sony seems to be aiming for a fall launch at this point. It's what CEO Of Sony Entertainment Portugal, James Armstrong, told the site during a recent interview and although the translation is a little broken, you get the gist:

"We believe that launching the product this fall, before Christmas, but not yet decided. I do not rule that uses the MC but I doubt it. ‘GT 5′ is a great hope for Sony, a very important game for the company, which generates much income. We would have wanted him out before but we think the priority we are giving it our best. I’m very confident in this game that we launch this year and help us consolidate PS3 as the console that is large."

It's unlikely we'll see an end to this little drama before spring. Racing fans were disappointed to learn of the delay; the hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusive was supposed to release in Japan in March. But now, that ain't happening and we can only guess when North American and European gamers will get a shot at it. Of course, they could certainly use a big holiday release for the PS3 and it's not like we don't have enough games coming out between now and May. There are several huge titles to keep us occupied but even so...we kinda want this date.

I think they put it off to long, that killed the buzz a little, you can only tempt and take away for so long before excitment turns to resentment. Plus in my opinion, the demo showed the driving was very weak, looks really good though.

gran turismo is a franchise that has a huge following so loosing some buzz from casual gamers wont really matter. Everyone expects perfection with every gran turismo game and they're definitely getting it.

GT doesn't lose steam
It's a series with really dedicated fans

No matter how long it takes to release, its costumers know the product will be of the highest quality possible at that time.

GT3, best racer at that time. GT4, best racer at that time. That'll remain true when GT5 comes out. Simple as that

You cannot classify the time trial as a demo. It was a contest and as such, I guarantee that PD made the driving a little more loose than what you can expect from the full game.

I would be very surprised if the end result is anything but satisfying for everyone that loves GT.

Does the full game really exist? Almost sounds like a ponzi scheme for video games... Release a demo (or time trial if that suits your fancy) get investment and interest and then disappear to the Cayman Islands with all the money...

Just kidding of course, but one has to wonder with all the delays what is going on. I can understand being a perfectionist, but NOTHING is perfect. They'll likely release it and then patch it anyways shortly thereafter.

This is the game that was supposed to bitchslap Forza and show everyone what a REAL simulator is. Its lost a little of that flare after being pushed back so many times.

Yes, a ton people are still going to buy it, i dont think they've lost any sales, but they did lose all the hype and buzz.

The demo showed the driving was weak? BUZZZZ***** : Wrong. The demo only showed how "professional" physics have become even more realistic than those in GT5P. It takes alot of control and skill to pilot a car at its limits around any track.

it may have gotten "uncharted like scores" but comparing the two games, uncharted wins no contest. scores are like loyal final fantasy fans, they dont matter anymore. i mean halo had some high marks to but compare it to other games, its pretty average. reminds me of an article that compared ODST vs Uncharted 2. score given, at least on some aspects of the game, on visual i think favored ODST but we all know which is the better game.

Damn, that will be close to a year since they first told us "We can release this game anytime"
By then the 2011's will be out.

(I sure hope they at least get my shiny new 1959 Ford Edsel & 1968 Corvair in there by that time).

I thought it'd be released alongside 3D TV's, I forgot which season those were supposed to start being manufactured heavily. This should be a holiday game, so that The Last Guardian could squeeze in sometime June-Sept. Hopefully.

I don't think that they know. It's almost like they finished the game in late summer last year and then delayed the launch for marketing reasons and then realized that they had to update the cars because of the delay, and then Sony asked for 3D, and so now they are reworking the game for 3D and adding in the up to date cars.

I'd hope that they launch along side the 3D TVs from Sony, it's be a great selling point for both.

good reply Banky, anybody who dismisses GT doesn't really have their crash helmet on straight. GT lets you drive the finest cars and the finest cars day in and day out. Not even the wealthiest princes can do what you can do in GT given how much money you would burn on plane transportation for you AND your car among many other expenses like fresh tires, fuel etc etc etc. GT lets you do this virtually for a small fee.

I know a lot of people who are waiting to get GT5. It is in fact the reason they have a PS3 already. Frankly, I find it embarrassing that these people who saw the PS3 and thought "GT in HD!" have had to wait four years to hear that Sony is "not yet decided" if it's coming this fall.

This whining is uncalled for. GT is a series of perfection.

If they want to give us quality....let them.
At least they're not pushing it back while cutting a "whole game's worth of content" like Final Fantasy XIII did

PS: There was never an official release date for GT5 in North America/Europe. So it was never delayed

I would much rather hear about delays rather than have them come out and say they had to cut the game in half and will release the rest as DLC.

Could you imagine:

"In GT5, you will get 600 cars and 50 tracks. We will then release the other 400 cars and 30 tracks as DLC packs that will hit at a later date"

Well I will be patient and wait for it to be released.

I however think there is more to this fall release than most people think. Maybe they are doing it to give GT the best chance at GOTY as possible. Have a look in the past couple of years... How many games that releases early in the year won GOTY? I don't it was a lot of them. Most of the GOTY winners released after June.

Well I can be completely wrong don't actually have the statistics with me but it should be interesting to find out.

This year however there is a VERY strong possibility that GOWIII will take that honor and it will be releases in the first quarter of the year as well...

@scarecrow I completely agree with you, if they need to perfect it fine with me and my husband we would rather have a game that is in 100% working order than having glitches..
U're also right on the release date we never had one I know it had a pending for spring 2010 but it was not a solid date so I don't see a delay at all.

My hubby has plenty of games to tie him over till this releases and I would personally rather it be released later cause I don't have the cash for this at all plus it would make a great birthday gift for my husband in the fall.

sorry PD i was super super SUPER excited for this but when you have a string dangling in front of my face for years, slowly moving it closer and closer. than move it back every few months i get the shits and loose interest.
they could release it tomorrow for all i care im still not buying it.
sony just lost a sale of a ps3 too because my father was going to buy one for GT5 so were not fighting over my ps3.

Although the game will drive PS3 sales, it still makes more sense to launch the game in a larger install base. it'll probably be around 45 million PS3 by this Holiday. So that is a great plus.

Godsman, good point... my personal opinion is that there should be something like 3-6 million units sold. I would be surprised if it sold more than 8 million units, but there is always that possibility over the longer term. I hope I am not being too "short sighted" :)

I`m siding with Robochic & Scarecrow here. U guys seem to want a mediocre game to be released now. Granted, it's been a while since they started working on it, but that should only be a good thing, as consumers we get the better product. & also the point Scarecrow makes, that the game hasn't had a release date for NA & Europe. Why are we getting mad here, if the delay was only for Japan? Maybe they want a simutaneous release later in the year, since it worked wonders last year with Uncharted 2? I never thought I'd see the day that consumers complain that their product is being worked on & perfected too much...

Oh & about Mass Effect 2 receiving Uncharted 2-like scores....all the more reason for Bioware/bioware to announce it for PS3. Plus the fact that it sold 2 mill first week.

Ho Hum. I moved my preorder money a long time ago. So now we're looking at MAYBE a year after the statement of "we can launch this at anytime"? Guess that was a stretch.

I hope this is a genuine delay to make the game better(although a delay for 3D would be horse crap IMO) and not just a postponement to time the market for GOTY chances.

Some people are forgetting the fact that after GT5 releases that there is a likely chance that they wont ever need to purchase another Gran turismo until like...Playstation 4.Agree with scarecrow about PD trying center GT5's release around perfection & i totally understand since this isn't just some random[Madden or smackdown vs raw]yearly release.It is mother fudging gran turismo,the flashship racing game of this generation!

Personally I believe that Polyphony would have been better releasing the game a year ago, and then offering a yearly upgrade to the latest version for a nominal $10 fee over PSN. By waiting so long, I think they have dampened enthusiasm for GT5. Since they can deliver incremental upgrades via PSN, this would seem to be better strategy than forever waiting for perfection. WHen GT5 was first announced for PS3 that was more or less the intention. They were going to release the base game with a small number of cars and tracks and then provide more cars and tracks through the PSN along with incremental upgrades to the functionality. GT5 Prologue was supposed to develop this way as well. Though I think that trying to do that along side developing the full game provided more distraction from working on the full game than it was worth.

Well, it is large. Just look at the great hulking thing...oh, wait, the slim is not nearly so large and hulking...

I love the way that the translation left his remarks. It's a more literal translation and less of an interpretation, so we can all get the meaning more directly. Clearly he thinks that GT5 will help propel the PS3 into a leading position against the 360...either that or it's simply going to crush the opposition with it's sheer size and bulk.

I dont really care when its released, i just want a date so i can plan accordingly. IF its not out until Nov im going to pick up a copy of Prologue, but im not going to do that in case they announce it will be out in early summer or something. THey are hurting themselves and their customers by not committing to anything.

As much as I'm disappointed in this delay, it may be a smart move by the guys at PD. This is lots of time for the hype to have died down from other racing games (ie Forza 3) When the game finally launches, hopefully there won't be too much competition in this genre at that time.

On the other hand, I'm starting to feel like when the game does finally launch it's going to be renamed Gran Turismo 5: The Duke Nukem Forever Chronicles....

I love you guys but for the sake of my health,I keep having to skip through more than 3/4 of the comments (I usually read all) on GT5 articles. Ben's a machine and isn't going to stop even if it kills me ;)

All I can say is once again I'll can't want when it releases and I'll once again lose all my friends. I don't get pissed off at delays, which I'm grateful for.

Well said again Banky, i dont get pissed at delays, especially since i still love GT5P. Dammit, i have to do some SERIOUS racing after work. We have High Speed Ring @ 800pp points this month with worldwide servers allowing international competition = the real world of GT :)

Sony would be insane if they let this game slip into 2011. Unleashing this beast during the holiday season is going to give the PS3 an unbeatable weapon to bludgeon the competition with. With respect to the creators, who clearly have the admirable desire of getting as close to perfection as possible, GET IT DONE.
