Report: PS3 Enjoys "Increasing Worldwide Market Share"
Sony's "It Only Does Everything" PlayStation 3 campaign, combined with stellar exclusives and the all-important price drop, has resulted in a definite surge around the globe.
As reported by Industry Gamers, Research and Markets has released a new report that deals with "the growth trends of video consumer devices, including gaming consoles." According to the results, the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 in Europe since June 2008 and furthermore, Sony's machine "is also steadily increasing its market share in all other regions across the globe, including in the North American market." And although the 360 still sells more in this region, PS3 sales have been rising quickly (up 44% over the holidays) and SCEA senior vice president of Marketing and the PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, insists that some day, the PS3 will reach and surpass the competition. As for all the console makers, the report says the Americas should remain the largest through at least the next few years. However, although the PS2 continues to sell in less established markets around the world, sales have certainly fallen off in the major markets like the US, UK and Japan. In other words, it seems clear that the transition between PS2 and PS3 is essentially complete in the most important regions.
It's good to see the PS3 continue its upward swing and provided the exclusives continue to resonate with critics and gamers alike, it seems inevitable that Dille's claim will come true at some point in the near future.

If either Sony or Microsoft manages to gather another 10 - 20 million gamers, it'll be the end for the other one. One advantage for PS3 is that their motion controller is similiar to Wii. Awesome games like Monster Hunter 3 would never be Wii exclusive.

Or just buy a new slim! ;)
Sony's always been great with me, sorry blankline.
btw, just a little secret my buddy had the same problem. He called Sony and complained his head off and got a free game (heavenly sword) along with his replacement PS3. i hate to do that for Sony's sake but as a consumer we got's to watch out for eachother! ;)

All Microsoft was doing was riding the FPSs bycicle
Once people realized how good other genres were, they started to shift to ps3 (where there's more QUALITY in variety)
The console itself caters better for v-games. The other console was just a hungry machine:
-cheap DVDs
-RROD
-DLC milking
-etc.
It was never really the real HD console
blu-ray for ps3, just like DVD for ps2 will keep the console on top

Xbox fans, instead of asking "What other genre can we play?", they ask "What else can we shoot?"
This is why Microsoft writes those checks out, they hinder the potential of PS3, by time exclusivity then port down to PS3. Gamers will think Xbox is graphically superior. I was so glad that last year, Uncharted 2 claimed some face for Sony with their superior graphics.

But seriously, there are really quite a few factors in the mix, all leading to either the xbox or the PS3 finishing 2nd (or 1st! gasp!) in hardware sales. After we see the effects of Natal and Arc (or whatever), we will get a better picture of the situation. Sony is gobbling up market share in all regions and is now selling more than the xbox even in America! If Microsoft does not stop this trend with Natal (or something else), I would say it's definitely possible that the PS3 will overtake it sometime in the future. But then, Microsoft may release a new system before that can happen, so they can "win" the generation just in the nick of time. We have to wait and see.
I apologize for the long read.

I think instead of making it $249 for PS3, Sony will bundle the Arc+camera for $299 instead in Holiday 2010. It will draw more attention, and make it simplier for consumers.

Plus $100 dollars for the Arc + EyePet bundle sounds like a rip off. Eyepet and the camera sells for $60. I don't think the Arc will be $40 bucks. The Arc needs to be selling for $20-30 to stay competitive, considering that it needs the $40 PSeye to work.

HA, better than that, I'd like to think that Sony's now using some mighty Paul Bunyon sized lumberjack boots with stainless steel spiked soles.
I wonder how long before MS feels the Earth quake under their feet from the getting-ever-closer rumbling footprints being made by one mighty mean SOB of a superior gaming console?

I'm glad that Sony rather spend the same money on developing new games rather than buying exclusives. In the end, it'll be a stalemate and it'll be hurting the industry. No PS3 gamers can't play the most common multiplatform game because they became exclusives and same for XBox gamers.

Sony's said that they will be making a console profit of 15% (~$45) by 2011. To me it just makes sense, that they have room to cut $50, and still make ~$13 of profit per console.

Is if my imagination or is White Knight Chronicles getting crap reviews for being a JRPG? Looking at the majority of games to get moderately high reviews recently they are pretty much dominated by the more excessively violent, gorey and dark (in theme) type of game, and the western RPG style.
I understand that JRPGs are not to everyone's liking, but the kinds of review score this is getting for some are normally reserved for true drek. I mean, Diner Dash has a better metascore for crap's sake.
I still have to get my copy, but no amount of poor reviews are going to convince me that WKC is not superior to Diner Dash...
Anyone with some play time under their belt who can make me feel better about my purchase? Any reviews not from IGN, Gamespot or 1up?
Why let a reviewer that doesn't enjoy traditional JRPGs review a traditional JRPG just so they can dump on it?
*sigh*

To me, I dont think FFXIII will be the best RPG of this gen, but I'm sure the Western Reviewers will be forced to give it an upper 9 because it's an FF game.

however, i havent done any quests yet and i think theres around 50 of them, so that would keep me busy for a while. but when you do choose to do the quest solo, you are doing it solo with just your avatar character. i kinda hoped you can bring the other story characters with you though but i guess its supposed to be online quests.
there is just one thing that i dont like about the game though. you can reach the level cap and still not master all 8 of the skill sets. and you need to master all 8 sets to get the trophy. they do give you a chance to gain more skill points and reallocate the ones you had but it requires you to reach lvl 50 multiple times, which means a lot of level grinding after finishing the game. i'm not sure if its true but i keep hearing that you cant master all skills at once for one character and the trophy will only unlock for your avatar skill sets. if you arent really trying to get trophies then this is no big deal.
ohh, and you only get to have 3 people in your party unless theres a "guest" party member joins which you cant control. i would've prefered a 4 person party since beating down those giant monster can seem like its taking forever. i dont remember how many people ffxii let you have. and 2 giant knights beating up a handful of regular and giant enemies is awesome, hahaha.

Obviously, it does not surpass the graphic prowess of Uncharted 2 or even Killzone 2. This is expected being the game originally released about 2 years ago in Japan. The primary graphical issue is with the textures.
A pet-peeve I have with the game is the language selection when you first start up the game. You have to select your language every time you start the game. That's just sloppy design.
The real issue I have is with editing the combo system. Every time my party levels up, I have to go back and setup the command system all over. After doing this for 4 party members over 8 times each so far, it is becoming a tedious task. Which ultimately has placed the game back on the shelf where it is now collecting dust.
I don't particularly care for the fact that I cannot save my game at anytime. Why would this be an issue? Well, as I stated before; every time you level you are going to want to adjust your command options and combos for your character to make use of their newest skills. If you haven't had a chance to save yet and are on your way back to a save point then end up dying - all those changes are GONE. This has already happened to me once after spending 30 minutes setting up new commands. The game hasn't been back in my console since.
The story telling is weak and very shallow. I still don't fully understand what exactly is going on and I am easily 8+ hours into the game already.
If none of these issues are of a concern, then I think you will enjoy WKC. Had the game been released 2 years ago, I would be loving every bit of it - minus the constant reconfiguring of the command sets.
WKC has just got me more interested in Heavy Rain and FFXIII. I need a game with a good story that is told very well.
Thanks, Naughty Dog. You've ruined every other game out there! :P

as i said, i never did any of the quests which could be why it said 100 hours to complete. plus you can rebirth multiple times in order to master all 8 skill sets. I'm going to start working on the quests after i finish the game but i really want to do them offline by myself with the party in the story. i dont think i can take out those giant monsters by myself with my own avatar add to that the time limits with quests.

all open world sandbox style games sell like hotcakes, especially the gang styled ones thats just peoples interest.
you look at the sales of eyepet, i can literally count the copies sold at my local EB on one hand.
im willing to bet planet earth, and every living soul on it that 8 days or the getaway 3 would of sold at least 15 times better than eyepet.
sony just looked at the wii and said yes i want a slice of that pie.
their forgetting they dont have the family and soccer mom image that ninty has.

I mean, really, you bounce along making baseless claims of astronomical failure rates of the PS3 Slim. Personally I've not read reports to suggest this anywhere, and haven't heard legions of PS3 Slim owners on forums complaining about their PS3 slim dying on them.
An ex/ps3 gamer indeed, lemme guess you 'defected' to the 360?

The Good news? I took my old beast apart and got it working again so I now have two PS3's, but without searching youtube videos to see how to fix it, I probably would have just tossed it. I wonder how many others have run into this problem.
Also I don't trust my new slim that much, I've already had it freeze up and need system restores twice since I bought it.
Why doesn't anyone build anything to last anymore? I mean I've still got an original PS1 that works and my launch PS2 is still going, How many people 10 years down the road are going to be able to say that their launch PS3 is still going strong? Does quality not matter anymore in the name of "new and flashy"?
That being said, even with these problems that left me a bit frustrated, I would still chose a Sony product over the competition.

BTW, you could probably have got Sony to fix that 80GB system for about half the price of a new slim PS3.
As for your question about how many will still have their PS3 still going strong 10 years after getting it? A question and a guess. First of all, how many people have many CE devices that are still working like they were on purchase day, 10 years later? Especially complex devices like the PS3 which is more analogous to a PC. I have one PC that still works and is 10+ years old, but it's in a bit of a dilapidated state and only works because I'm geek enough to keep it running and it was a Compaq server class system to begin with. I'd guess that by the 10 year mark, at least 50% of the original launch systems will still be operational - assuming that their owners take care of them and clean the optical lens from time to time. I'd also guess that the mortality rate for 10 year old PS3s will be greater than that for 9 year old ones, or 8 year old ones, or 7, or 6, or 5, or... Like most CE products the older the device, the greater the chance of failure.
