First GoWIII Review: Perfect Score, Best Game Ever Made

You won't be seeing reviews from North American sources for some time yet - not until the embargo date is up - but monthly magazines need more time and hence, review leaks with scans of the pages in question are common.

And although we can't confirm this to be true, the first God of War III review has found its way to the Internet; it's from the European publication, PSM3. You can view the scans here (there are only spoilers if you can speak French); it appears to be the complete review. They gave the game a perfect score because - as they say - it's quite simply the best game ever made, and there's no arguing that point. You know, we'd almost be surprised if it was anything but God of War. There were critics who made that very same claim when each of the previous two installments arrived, and that's because they were so freakin' amazing. Therefore, to hear that GoWIII is once again one of the best interactive pieces of software you will ever play is hardly a big shock. While March will feature both SCEA's masterpiece and Final Fantasy XIII, we get the feeling that most PS3 owners are already sold on one, while they're kinda on the fence about the other. If you're "on the fence" concerning Kratos' latest adventure, we suggest doing a bit of online research; by the time you're done, your keyboard will be inundated with drool. Gross, yes, but still true.

So there's one review. Count on seeing more pop up here and there over the course of the next few weeks. We, of course, won't post ours until it's allowed.

It may not be some people's personal all time "favorite," but if these scans are to be believed, the overall quality of the title makes it the best ever made. I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

There's a difference here

MANY agree that Halo isn't even the best in its genre. So it's impossible for it to be the best game ever made.

However, with God of War, you could very heavily argue that it is the best series in its genre; action/adventure.

And GOWIII being the latest, it wouldn't surprise me if turns out to be one of the top 10 games ever made

That's just GOW quality right there. Having played 1 and 2, I can only DREAM 'bout how jaw-dropping this game will be.

Yeah, I don't really like to say that there's just one "best" of a entertainment medium. I can't just give a "best film of all time." I have to separate my favorites into categories.
So I'd agree that calling this the best Action game would be more appropriate.

I highly doubt that. Shadow of the Colossus holds that title for me. I don't see GoW3 stealing that title. Especially seeing as how the first two didn't impress me.

I'm pretty sure hardcore action adventure aficionados will find this their favorite game. But for me, that spot is reserved for the greatest RPG of time. For this generation (of course), has yet to hit me. So far, it's Folklore. I'm hoping another game will take it's spot before this year is over.

But yeah, already pre-ordered GOW3. Gotta make sure I finish GOW2 first though.

I'd have to agree with you, Folklore is simply the best RPG so far. We know FFXIII will replace it but great nod to the gem that is Folklore. Thumbs up for that one, just2skillf00l.

As for GOWIII, with each release it sets the bar. I'm not surprised it was given this mark simply because the demo is AMAZING. I figure if a demo can keep me entertained for so long there's no denying the perfect score.

ugh critics are gonna be way ott about this game.

Obviously it cannot be the greatest because to do that, you'd have to have every genre touched upon, every aspect (story, gameplay etc) perfected to universal acclaim. That is a near impossible task and GoW is not liked by many.

I don't like it because its essentially a button masher with a cheesy blockbuster storyline. However, i do respect its production values and awe at it's set pieces.

Even without playing God Mode the game is built around knowing combo's and learning how to defeat each enemy boss.

Prince, if you don't dig it that's cool, but I doubt that critics who know how to critique a game are going to be ott (off?) about the game. Reviewing it should be pretty straight forward actually, at just 10 hours they will be able to finish the whole thing before reviewing as well.

Although my french isn't perfect, I didn't read any where with in the article saying it was "the best game ever". That was written in the title of the comment posting the link. But it was written: "Forget the demo, which made you almost pity, forget all (games) that you wanted to have up until now, because even the great Nathan Drake will shake/stumble"...In the conclusion, under where its says "No god, no master" it also said, "it transcends all genres and the video game."

Also, besides mentioning some weapons we haven't seen in the demo, it's a pretty much spoiler-free review.

Sorry chil', i like to give my OPINION and then reason it.

And to Line (which sums you up), then you must be surrounded by other sheep. GoW is a mixed bag, has two ends but no inbetween. I dislike mind numbing games like that usually but respect it from a technical standpoint, and enjoy games that challenge my way of thought in every aspect like a complex story ala Silent Hill 2, games that require logical thought ala Broken Sword or Braid, new genres like Heavy Rain, games that require ol' school skill ala Demons Souls...

I despise mind numbing games like CoD, a beat em up, GoW or something like that UNLESS they have something else....like Timesplitters as a FPS for example.

Now please, go back to reading Harry Potter and the Forrest Of Embarrassment and i'll get back to the complete works of the romantic poet and visionary, William Blake.

I have been a fan of PSM since the 1990s.
I can definitely tell you that these guys are reliable. They've never rated games in any way that shows bias.

Two tidbits I found interesting in the French article Ben refers to:
"Fighting the Titan Chronos makes Shadow of the Colossus look like a mini game."
"The passage shown in the demo has been completely redone in the full game, technically it has nothing in common with it."

On a personal note, I only regret this is not a turn based game...

I am the other way round I am sold on GOW3 I was as soon as they said it was being made. I am on the fence over FF13 I may buy it I may not buy it I still have not made up my mind about it yet.

It doesn't say it's perfect, it says that "if perfection exists, this title is its virtual incarnation". The author also says that the game "transcends video gaming".

the last time I heard a review label a game as "greatest game ever made" was ON THE BACK OF THE FFVII CASE!! and it rightfully deserved that title IMO.
I thought the demo was pretty stellar. will probably get this game after all.

the demo ruined it for me, i hadnt played the first 2 so i got the collection a fortnight ago and begun from the start, i got halfway through the first then downloaded the GOWIII demo, i was blown away and when i went back to the first game, it was nowhere near as good and i now have no motivation to play it, so i watched some story synopsis vids on youtube to catch up with the story, ready for GOWIII

I'm by no means saying GOWIII is not going to be worthy of praise, but best game of all time, is just jumping the gun alittle too much, i mean there have been much more "meaningful" entries into the medium over the years. As fun as GOW is, does it really enrich our lives? Has it made you think thoughtfully about something you otherwise wouldn't have? Yeah, maybe something doesn't have to do that, and those things that don't, dont get labeled best ofs. Like Halo...

GOW will fu**ing rock yes, but it's a hack and slash epic action game, not the 2nd coming.

MGS4 was epic, no question. And maybe even more epic than U2. But my impression was U2 was the more entertaining game, because it was more action-oriented, and of course was designed to be. Graphically, it also obviously excelled over MGS4. But for around $25 new at Gamestop, you won't find a better deal than MGS4. Well, besides the Orange Box (I hate Valve too, but come on, who doesn't love Portal).

It could be the best game ever made, but that would depend on want we call "game".
I do think the GoW series are extraordinary, but I'm incapable of playing them, sadly. The gameplay of constant fighting bores me. It's annoying really. But I love watching my best friend playing them and I'm looking forward to watching GoW III quietly drinking a beer.

As for the best video game ever made ? I'd go for Tetris...

when will reviewers get it through their heads that they cant say things like that?
its pure speculation because as the saying goes one mans garbage is another mans pulp puree.
they can say it in opinion but than they have to state so.
for me the best game of all time is crash bandicoot, but than i know many people who hate the game to death.

I felt a stong agreement vibe coming from that editorial, Mr. Dutka. We all felt it. Im thinking that reserving GOWIII was a good move.

I got access to GOWIII demo but I don't even want to touch it, because I want to go in fresh and experient the final product.

O you better play it brotha. It's so good you'll play it over and over, and every time is a new journey. The battle system with all the new weapons is absolutely excellent, and as long as your not a button masher, theres a ton of new combos and moves to satisfy any one.

Can't say im surprised, this is a huge game, and Sony, Santa Monica knew they had to make it the best. In my opinion the engine alone is gonna b well worth witnessing! I cant wait!

Respond to World's comment about best game not being your favorite game.

Best game is also subjective as is a favorite game. Simply, if we take a vote here at PSX listing every game ever created and then asking which one is the best. The vote will definitely not be unanimous. How can you truly choose a best game, how do you determine which game is the best? Is it by genre, by what means can you find the best game? I'm pretty sure there are people out there who would say MW2 is the best game, heck, it might even win this hypothetical contest, so tell me World, how do you determine "The Best Game".

Yeah, the most epic game, it will surely take the pie. For best game though, that's like trying to compare LittleBigPlanet and GOW3, there's no way you can do that. If any finds a way, I'll be posted.

GOW3 & HR are both GOTY to my Eyes LOL ...

i can't read the article from PSM3 for will spoil everything, i will take it on your notes but not surprised.

i agree with those saying that 'The Best game' concept brings confusion, for my part, i believe in a 'best game of this category till then,, yeah i know too long LOL .. let's say it's one of the best games!

i don't care which game win which title... L’important c'est d'y prendre plaisir avec.
