SCEA On Dante's Inferno: "We All Wanted To See It"

There's little doubt that EA's Dante's Inferno is very much like SCEA's God of War franchise, but neither side views this as a bad thing.

Last year, when a reporter told an EA designer that their new action project looked an awful lot like GoW, the team member didn't balk in the slightest. He said the studio is flattered that people see it that way; after all, God of War is one of the most revered and popular franchises out there. They have never once hid the fact that SCEA proved to be a big influence for the Inferno project, but how do the SCEA guys feel? Well, they have no problems with it and in fact, they're pretty big fans of EA's new action extravaganza. According to CVG citing the UK Official PlayStation Magazine, God of War III director Stig Asmussen had some nice things to say about the competition:

"We've been intrigued about Dante's Inferno. This is my favourite genre, and the more people that are making [these games] the better. And this is a really rich story they're building on, it's very interesting. The day that the demo came out we were trying to download it on PSN at midnight. We all wanted to see it."

So no, SCEA isn't sitting behind closed doors in the office, plotting a dastardly revenge plan. They're not twisting cliched evil mustaches and cursing EA to hell because they "stole their ideas." That just isn't the case, and we're glad to hear it; we need the developers to be professionals, after all. And stay tuned for both the Dante's Inferno and Bioshock 2 reviews...

after wanting to buy Dante's Inferno but hearing and reading slightly underwhelming things about the story and pacing, I'm actually thinking about picking up the GoW collection, since I've never played the first two, and getting GOW3.

I really enjoyed Dante's Inferno. The fight with Cerberus was epic. I''m glad I picked it up. Some parts of the game seemed out of place but for the most part the game-play was solid and fun. Gotta go through a second play-through to unlock the rest of the holy attacks. I'm glad that it was a very challenging game and at some points you had to die. Anybody who can go through this game without dying is truly a beast.

my favorite boss battle has to be the 2nd one, the one with the judge of the dead.
the finisher is so brutal i literally fell off the sofa when i saw it.
the final boss battle was LAME!
so disappointing, what a crappy way to end such a epic brutal game :(

Love this game, the year is young but it's the best thing I've played in 2010 and the replay value is there too because there is more stuff coming down the pipe in the form of online multiplayer that I might actually care about.

The story, settings, and action was better than the previous two GOWs and I can't wait to see it expand with the sequel. After watching the special features you can see how despite using the GOW formula for battle, they broke with many conventions and did things never done before to make it the wildest adventure they could. The reviews were very unfair to this game.

Calling it a GOW ripoff would be a massive mistake, like calling KZ3 a MW ripoff. Best action game of all time for me, after GOWIII is released it will still be the best action multiplat of all time. Looking forward to the review. Totally exalted.

I'd like to open this up to the down thumbers to explain why what I said was disagreeable. If you don't like the game that's okay, but what was disagreeable about my post? Is it because I meant KZ2 not KZ3? C'mon don't be scared.

I think there are a lot people that just don't understand thumbs-down is not for disagreement, but for marking a comment as blatantly inflammatory, as opposed to being 'wrong' or differing with one's own opinion, or even from fact.

In the case one has a differing opinion, or fact, one responds and lists the counter-points, or facts. At least that's how it is in my mind.

In the case of people voting who's right in a debate, for example, one simply has to use a 'thumb-up' do indicate their vote. But for most people, a thumbs-down simply is a "boo-hiss", especially for those who find difficulty in articulating thoughts or feelings.

After playing the demo for Dante's Inferno then the demo for GOWIII I knew waiting for GOWIII would be more my cup of tea. My opinion was solidified when I played through the first level of Dante's Inferno at a friends place. Something felt off while playing and I think, for me, it was the fact that the controls weren't as fluid as I'd hoped.

I like this game to some extend, eg story wise. However My problem with this game is that there should have been more original elements in terms of combat instead of ripping off others and better character acting. I was a bit interesting in getting the game until I played the demo and thus I youtube the whole thing. Some of the character's acting and what they do is just plain BAD! an ok game.

I agree, and it's just silly. Many games use the exact same format as other ones, DI just happens to be the first to use the GOW format after them (Provided you don't attribute it to Darksiders, which is kind of a hybrid and isn't a tenth as good as DI)

Dante's Inferno and worth owning. I just completed it not even 5 minutes ago and am ready to do the entire thing again. The only thing about this game that resembles GOW is the fighting mechanics. The story is VERY original and it's a beautiful game that has some serious gross moments. No glitches and it doesn't get stale. Every level of hell is unique with some intense challenges. This game beyond a doubt outranks the first 2 GOW titles. They were great but this is greater. Do not let the biased reviews fool you. I have GOW and am getting part 3 but there is no reason to choose between these 2 games. Get them both.

"Only that resembles GOW is the fighting mechanics."

What about the box-pushing, the wall climbing, and the puzzle solving? What about the enemy designs? See, even though it is GOW reskinned, I'm not dismissing it for that reason. The reason why I'm waiting is, generally speaking, I don't like playing the same kind of game back-to-back. One kind of gets jaded for a bit. So if I had to pick a game of the two, it would be GOW3. I'm sure i'll get around to playing Dante's Inferno some time, but I don't want to spoil my appetite before dinner, if you get my meaning.

DMC4 was cool, but the battle-mechanics seemed to feel tacked on, rather than feeling original and solid as it did in DMC1, and DMC3/se. However, I have only played Bayonetta's demo, and from what Arnold has said, the loading times for levels, and item selection are nearly game-breaking on the ps3 version.

it was quite impressive since it was the first car to have 100HP.
it was the first car to have a engine in the W shape because it was using 2 4 liter V8s which gave it its W16 heart.
and if i remember right it also was the first car to use 4 turbo chargers.

World,

You got balls for saying that. Dante's Inferno makes GOW1 and 2 look boring. I agree with you. DI was much more entertaining IMO. With GOW1 and 2 I felt like just pressing through to the end. GOW1 and 2 did have better puzzles but for some reason, I can't admit in my heart that GOW1 and 2 were better games. They just didn't do it for me.

Kratos is truly the epitome of a badass but that doesn't make a game for me. GOW's story seemed lacking and no I didn't feel sorry for Kratos, his fate was caused by his own barbaric and pathetic actions. Calling on Ares to bestow upon him the power to smite his enemies. Well Dante tells Death, "I will redeem myself". Dante took responsibility for his actions while Kratos still murders innocent people on a whim. Take the characters and compare them. Dante is without a doubt the more interesting of the two.

Yeah, I pointed that out in a later article. However, I'm mostly talking about Kratos's character and the storyline. I think it's fair to compare storylines from games of different generations. I'm not talking about graphics, I'm talking about character development. I think it's a fair comparison when talking about it this way.
