God Of War III Eats Up 35GB Of A Blu-Ray Disc
Size and space is always a big deal for video game developers, which is why many first-party studios for Sony are thankful to have the Blu-Ray disc on their side.
According to a recent Tweet by SCEA Director of Technology Tim Moss, the upcoming God of War III uses a whopping 35GB of space on a Blu-Ray disc. Following the remark, he says, "thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays," which isn't surprising in the slightest. If A developer utilizes both sides of a Blu-Ray disc, they can jam up to 50GB of data on there, although according to The Lost Gamer, new techniques may allow a developer to put 33.4GB of space on one side of a piece of BD software. Over the past few years, we've heard many developers talk about the benefits of the Blu-Ray disc over DVD, and for a game like this, any extra help for the designers has to be appreciated. The final product should be both beautiful and even revolutionary from a technical standpoint, and one has to assume that the Blu-Ray disc has played a significant role in the game's excellence. This, combined with the power of the PlayStation 3, should allow GoWIII to shine brightly.
We'll let you know if that demo will hit the PSN this week; if it does, you can bet you'll see some hands-on impressions. You'll get some of those for the Yakuza 3 demo in a day or two, by the way.

Square-Enix spent way too much time making pretty CG movies and not enough on gameplay, hence the deleted content and huge time delays for release.
If FF Vs XIII can go the way of GoWIII by using in game cinematics over Hi-Res CG cutscenes, they might save some space and free up time to concentrate on gameplay.
I only hope they have learnt their lesson from the whole 360 transfer debacle. FFXIII might have been a test for them to see quality, reception and sales numbers from a major multiplatform FF release. FF Vs XIII may fix this.
Square-Enix still have a chance to redeem themselves. I just hope they don't screw up the second time round.

Please not I have not played any FF game so that is a purely un-educated opinion on it's use in the FF series.

This has been a great week for the blue Ray format. First, Capcom admits they had to cut Lost Planet 2 down due to dvd9 limitations. Then we start to see evidence of just how much of a difference blue Ray and the Cell has made in Final Fantasy XIII. (the Xbox version looks like it's running on the FFX engine) and now this.
It amazes me how no one who still advocates the use of DVD9 for this gen of gaming can never answer these two questions.
1. If dvd9 was good enough then why did MS back HD-DVD?
2. There's no denying Blue Ray greatly enhances our movie watching experience, why wouldn't it do the same for gaming?
Blue Ray FTW!

MS only pushed the industry forward with Xbox Live, which is an internet and software thing. When it comes to hardware, MS really is quite terrible.
Imagine in a perfect world if MS decided to introduce Live on Playstation 2 instead of joining the console war. Playstation would have the best of both worlds, great Blu-ray, Cell powered body with fantastic online functionality all in one delicious package. There would be no flame wars between the Sony and MS lovers. Friendly gaming and social gatherings would exist around the console. Halo 3 would've looked like Halo Reach now, and Halo Reach would look even better on blu-ray. Lost Planet 2 and FF XIII would not have had to deal with storage limitations. The community boards on IGN and Gamespot would not be overrun with little whiny Xbots screaming "My 360 can frag the PS3 to the moon!!!". The competition will be friendly between Sony and Nintendo.
All is well. (Anyone like to take a guess at which book I got that from? Hint: Last 3 words)

Blamed it on Capcom, never the Xbox. One guy went as far to say that it proves the PS3 is holding the Xbox back. i cant remember his reasoning, it was too dumb to even comprehend let alone remember.

DVD = faster.... for now...
I heard that more info can be compressed onto a DVD because it has a faster reading speed over blu-ray.
For example, the 37 or so GB of data from God of War 3 might be able to fit onto 3-4 360 discs (heaven forbid 360 gets their paws on it). This is because there is far less compression on a blu-ray disc which means far less time decompressing for the PS3. So God of War 3 could be compressed from 37 to 20 GB and placed over 3 discs.
Take Halo 3 as an example. The 360 disc might read 7-8 GB of data on the disc, but if transferred to blu-ray and PS3, might take up 16-20 GB of space on the disc. This does, however, leave another 30 GB or so for Bungie to play with.
All in all, Blu-ray was a gamble on Sony's behalf, but it paid off for them in the end.
As Xbots argued 3 years ago: "Who needs Blu-ray? It's an expensive add-on to the PS3 and serves no different purpose from DVD. Gears of War beats anything the PS3 can achieve and it only needs DVD. Screw Blu-ray, 360 FTW!!!"
... oh, if only I could see the look on these Xbots' faces now...

though makes you wonder what konami did with MGS4 to full up the full 50GBs and they were still complaining it was not enough.
i really dont get them, they bi*** that 50GBs was not enough, than create their next game multiplatform.
if 50GBs is not enough how the .... are they going to handle 9?
looks like your going to need a large HDD if you want to play konamis next game, because everyone knows you cant play 360 games off the disk.
well that is if you want your drive, disk and your ears to last more than 6 months.
honestly the only sound effects missing are the 3, 2, 1, WE HAVE LIFTOFF!

Anyways, I got the demo, when they were handing em out through mails n such, but I ordered the GoW collection a couple of weeks ago, and I just remembered, I got a demo voucher for GoWIII from that one too, which I can't use, since I got the demo already.
Making a little game outta this.
So for those of you who haven't gotten the demo,
reply to this comment, with your best argument why you should get tha voucher, and the code goes to the one with the best argument of course. Through mail or Playstation or something.

...there's a misconception here about "Dual Layer" and "Dual Sided".
God of War 3 is Dual Layer, which is two 25 GB layers on one side of a disc.
Dual sided would mean there was a layer on each side of the disc.
DVD9 is dual layer, DVD18 is dual layer, dual sided. However DVD18 is rare, and generally not used because it's more difficult to handle dual sided w/o scratching.
A dual sided, dual layer Blu Ray Disc, could fit 100 GB on it, but I haven't seen anyone make these yet... and I hope I don't, I hate dual-sided discs.

I have pretty much decided that I am a PS3 fanboy.
Not the annoying type mind you, but the type who will reward exclusive developers with my cash. PS3 exclusive is where the games I feel as a consumer deserve. No HDD missing or media storage problems there what-so-ever..
I was close to trying the 360 again, but after reading all the FF13 and Lost Planet news, I believe a 360 will never get the honor of sitting next to my Slim.
It's only year four in the PS3 lifetime, and the obvious advantages are really starting to come through.
I am positive that MS is afraid to see what 2011 looks like when it comes to PS3 vs 360 games.
