ESRB Rates Tecmo Bowl Throwback
Say the title "Tecmo Bowl" to a veteran gamer and his face will likely light up with a huge nostalgic grin. And although that new entry for the Wii will miss PlayStation 3 owners, it seems Tecmo Bowl Throwback won't.
The ESRB is always a good source for discovering new unannounced titles, and that's where we find the aforementioned game. It's coming to both the PSN and XBLA and although we don't have a date, we have the expected description. It sounds exactly like our old-school favorite of yesteryear:
"This is a top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the "Tecmo Bowl Champion." Some of the football highlights are depicted in animated cutscenes (with better graphics); a few non-football highlights depict cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops while dancing. And a jumbotron screen displays a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage."
EA tried to give us something like a next-gen Tecmo Bowl with Madden Arcade last year, but it really didn't cut the mustard and we kinda miss the original classic that started it all. And whether you played it first on the Nintendo or the GameBoy, you will never forget using San Francisco to toss long TD passes from Montana to Rice (and intercept nearly every pass with Howie Long), or using the unstoppable tandem of Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen on the Los Angeles Raiders. Man, I can't wait to take a trip down memory lane with this one.

But even I love classics with good mechanics (Mike Tyson's Punch-Out comes to mind), so if a demo of this goes up, I will definitely be trying it out. Old-school nostalgia is such a great thing.
And to think, the 13 and 14 year olds have only played 2D games like Littlebig Planet and New Mario Bros. Wii. It's a shame that most only understand great FPS's over each other. It's good for them to expand their knowledge with old-school appearances from Mega-Man 9, Mario, Sonic Mega Drive (or Genesis) collection. Good to learn where the greats began and how video-gaming has evolved to what it is now.
Kids and Teens need to learn that FPS's aren't the only dominating genre. Long live the Action Platformer!!!

Some titles can withstand the test of time, some don't. I have a feeling that as great as Tecmo Bowl was, a revival of the old 8-bit classic will not live up to other classics such as Zelda, Metroid, or my personal favorite "Tetris" from the old NES days.
