ESRB Rates Tecmo Bowl Throwback

Say the title "Tecmo Bowl" to a veteran gamer and his face will likely light up with a huge nostalgic grin. And although that new entry for the Wii will miss PlayStation 3 owners, it seems Tecmo Bowl Throwback won't.

The ESRB is always a good source for discovering new unannounced titles, and that's where we find the aforementioned game. It's coming to both the PSN and XBLA and although we don't have a date, we have the expected description. It sounds exactly like our old-school favorite of yesteryear:

"This is a top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the "Tecmo Bowl Champion." Some of the football highlights are depicted in animated cutscenes (with better graphics); a few non-football highlights depict cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops while dancing. And a jumbotron screen displays a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage."

EA tried to give us something like a next-gen Tecmo Bowl with Madden Arcade last year, but it really didn't cut the mustard and we kinda miss the original classic that started it all. And whether you played it first on the Nintendo or the GameBoy, you will never forget using San Francisco to toss long TD passes from Montana to Rice (and intercept nearly every pass with Howie Long), or using the unstoppable tandem of Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen on the Los Angeles Raiders. Man, I can't wait to take a trip down memory lane with this one.

lol, I know I lit up when I read the title of this article. A total classic. Maybe I will get it for the memories.

I'm not sure which game pisses me off more. Super Contra or Tecmo Bowl. Both games reward any attempts made to beat the game by cheating it's ass off in hopes of defeating you.

Super Contra, oh man what a shame, Contra had so much promise and it died after the very first game.

I enjoyed Contra3 for SNES. Contra was my bi*** as soon as I bought a turbo controller.

Was a little too young when this one came out. (I'm 23 now). And it wasn't overly popular outside of USA I'm guessing, or Japan from my knowledge. (Madden and Superbowl games are only mildly popular here in Australia. Rugby League 3 on Wii is coming out and will be HUGE here though!!!)

But even I love classics with good mechanics (Mike Tyson's Punch-Out comes to mind), so if a demo of this goes up, I will definitely be trying it out. Old-school nostalgia is such a great thing.

And to think, the 13 and 14 year olds have only played 2D games like Littlebig Planet and New Mario Bros. Wii. It's a shame that most only understand great FPS's over each other. It's good for them to expand their knowledge with old-school appearances from Mega-Man 9, Mario, Sonic Mega Drive (or Genesis) collection. Good to learn where the greats began and how video-gaming has evolved to what it is now.

Kids and Teens need to learn that FPS's aren't the only dominating genre. Long live the Action Platformer!!!

Wow, Tecmo Bowl used to be one of my favorite NES games. Contra, Double Dribble, Excite Bike, Paper Boy, Zelda, Metroid, and Punch Out were my favorites too.

I remember going to The Wherehouse to buy Tecmo Bowl and they had a special where you would get a 10% discount for singing a verse from any song. My neighbor and I played that game to death, and then some. Loved that game. Day 1 purchase, definitely!

That was part of the rules. It had to be a known, published song. No wonder they got bought out by Blockbuster.

I loved me some Tecmo Bowl. I still play Tecmo Super Bowl 3 a few times a year. Hopefully this remake will be better than the one the DS got a few years ago.

Tecmo Bowl. The memory of the Cabinet factory Tecmo Super Bowl tournaments that I worked at are still fresh in my mind.

Good stuff, and day one buy for me.

Tecmo Bowl is far and away my favorite sports title of all time. I used to love running for 500 yards with Bo Jackson or tearing you a new one with Jerry Rice. It doesn't get much better than side winding down the field as your rival desperately tries to shoe string tackle you and missing every time or out jumping DB's during the flashy cut sceens. The memories I have connected to this game are among some of my favorites and I'd love to pass that on to my kids, so you can say this is definitely on my radar.

As much as I loved playing this game with my friends growing up, I don't believe the experience will be anywhere near the level it was then.

Some titles can withstand the test of time, some don't. I have a feeling that as great as Tecmo Bowl was, a revival of the old 8-bit classic will not live up to other classics such as Zelda, Metroid, or my personal favorite "Tetris" from the old NES days.

Man oh man! I loved that game. The better part of my early high school afternoons were spent playing delicious Tecmo Bowl (I know, I'm old). Mmm mmm good. This is a welcome addition.

Up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right, a, b, a, b, select, start is ingrained into my DNA at this point.

Stay classy Tecmo...
