PSXE Poll Update: Many Early Adopters For Heavy Rain

Although we heard plenty of skepticism surrounding Quantic Dream's newest project, it seems the majority of our readers were already sold on Heavy Rain even before the overwhelmingly positive review scores arrived.

We were hardly the only ones to heap glowing praise atop the revolutionary title in question, and while a lot of you said that feedback helped, most say they were all ready to snag Heavy Rain on day one. This probably shouldn't be too surprising, as we covered the game very well over the past year and there has been plenty of information flooding the Internet for months. For those who were really interested, you likely learned everything you needed to know quite some time ago, although we heard a lot of, "damn, now I'm definitely getting this game!" after we issued our review. Despite our 9.5 score, I told you towards the end of the analysis that Heavy Rain isn't for everyone; that if you lack the requisite sensibility and sensitivity, and you simply aren't interested in artistic, storytelling and atmospheric achievements, you'll likely be bored. But we've got a lot of readers who represent the exact right audience for this game.

It comes out on Tuesday, if you need the reminder. Moving forward, we want one simple answer from you: God of War III or Final Fantasy XIII? The two mammoth titles come out within one week of each other next month, and we'd like to know - if you absolutely had to choose - which of these immensely promising titles you would purchase. We know plenty of you are planning to get both but we're asking you to make the tough choice... Which is it?

God Of War 3 over Final Fantasy XIII for me. I'm buying both but already I expect GoW3 to be epic and FFXIII to be a "mild disappointment".

I paid $54 for Uncharted2, but there wasn't anything out at the time wanting my money. With both GOW3 and FFXIII releasing so close to each other it makes perfect sense to buy the game that's going to take up more of my time and wait to buy the other game when it's cheaper.

Just to let everone know GOW III was said to be about 18-20hrs. I know it's not the 50-60 SE has reported FFXIII to be. So the argument still stands that FFXIII will be more bang for your buck play wise but these are the report game play lengths.

You make a point Mich. I think that same point factors into FFXIII too. Every FF game before it has said to have about 30-40hrs of story but they all end up giving me 100+ playthroughs the 1st time around. GOW1 and 2 both gave me multiple play throughs but never more than 12hrs the first time through for either one.

Yea that's how I feel, every FF that I have played (X, X-2(ok maybe not 100 hrs on X-2) and XII)(working on VII and VIII) has given me about 100 hrs, I really slow play these games anyway because I just don't have the time. I have made multiple play throughs of the GOWs but first times were easily do able in a weekend.

Anyway I am gonna be getting both on DAY 1.

If you're an RPG fan, depending on how good the game is, those 40-50 hours could be 40-50 pizzas. However, if it's not such a great RPG, as some early reviews are suggesting, those 40-50 hours could be 40-50 cabbages, which still would be be better than 18-22 hours of GOW3 if you're not a fan of the hack'n slash/action adventure genre. Clearly, LV is an RPG fan.

Me? I'll go for GOW3. I wanna see how far Santa Monica pushes this generation, not how far MS has held it back.

Oh yeah. And I forgot to add, even if you're an RPG fan, if the game doesn't turn out to be such a good RPG, and misses the mark on being a good action adventure, those 40-50 hours could be 40-50 rotten cabbages, which is still worse than the 18-22 'cabbages' found in GOW3.

Remembering when naughty were talking about they're train level in uncharted 2 and how they spoke about how noone ever really made a real moving train going through the level.I was amazed, but seeing the recently released GOW3 trailer and seeing kratos fighting in real time a boss on a moving titan i had no words.

Uncharted 2 anyone?

I may wait a bit on Heavy Rain. Its not that i don't want to get it. I'm still trying to get my focus back on WKC before Final Fantasy XIII. If i don't beat that game before it comes out, it will unfortunately take a back seat to FFXIII.

Heavy Rain Collectors Edition.

Also have preorders on FFXIII and Ultimate God of War Trilogy. Not missing either.

But, if I had to choose between one or the other (Ben, you've started one helluva debate round here. Fortunately it's with mature readers, unlike IGN's and Gamespot's readers), I would have to go with God of War III. (or Ultimate God of War Trilogy)

Why? It's shorter and therefore fits in better with my uni and 2 jobs. And the developers of GoWIII haven't come out making disappointing announcement after disappointing announcement.

In my eyes, Santa Monica studios have far more of my respect than Square-Enix. Square-Enix feels like it's losing touch with its roots and its fanbase.

HMMM, let's see now.....

A game that I'd be knowingly rewarding this developer for butchering up a now-handicapped game, just so it can satisfy MS's huge learning curve of lesser disc-abilities. And both the Developer, SE, & MS can make double profit on the stolen DLC.

Or

Should I reward a 1st party developer that puts their "ALL" into the the game?
At 35 GB's of disc space used, that says it all.

Ok, I think I'd have to go with GOW just because I won't also need to buy the CSI game just to track down all of that purloined content that Ali Baba & their 40 SE thieves have game-napped for future pieces of gold & other valuable trinkets.

Ok fine, as likely that it is that I will try both, especially after seeing an imported version of FFXIII played at my local GameTraders (it looks great!), it is MORE likely that I will BUY God of War 3, especially after that recent trailer. It should be known that I have never played a FF and only tried God of War 1 once but I am still excited to see both of them finally launch. The most interesting thing for me to see will probably be review scores between the two, and then sales numbers of God of War versus FFXIII and then FFXII PS3 numbers the 360 version especially given that a major exclusive launches for the PS3 a week later, the PS3 version is supposedly better in a few minor ways, the 360 will have an exclusive bundle and that it used to be a PS only series.

I'm noticing a ton of FFXIII hate on here. Not sure if it has more to do with them choosing to support MS as well as Sony or because there is a younger crowd on here and I'm assuming they're more into mindless button smashing gore. Might contain minor spoilers:

-No towns
-No exploration (just dungeons/fight areas)
-No shops (you buy from the menu)
-They force you different characters throughout the whole game. But you can't switch them. (they let you switch near the end of the game)

That's not a jrpg to me

-There are towns in the game, just not very many. I believe three.
-There is exploration near the end of the game.
-This has to do with your first point.
-Yet again they open it up after the halfway point.

You say you're a die-hard FF fan and yet it sure seems you're trying your hardest to find reasons to not enjoy the game. Now you're complaining because certain features aren't accessible till near the end of the game. FFX was linear as hell yet no one complained. If MS wasn't in the equation many of you complainers would be silent.

@Limited... nope, not specifically, rather this title... The unfortunate truth is if FFXIII sells well, it will encourage Squeeeeeenix to continue supporting multi-platform titles rather than go back to their roots and produce titles that made me want a PlayStation in the first place... that is how impressive their early work was when they were exclusively with Sony...

Let us be honest here, with the PS3 probably surpassing the xBot this year, or early in 2011 (at the most), what is the motivation for PS3 exclusive developers to expand onto rival competitor hardware creating disdain and disgust amongst their loyal fans?

supporting this title in the xbox might encourage them to make more games multiplatform but buying it on the ps3 will give them reason to keep VS exclusive. If they see the numbers are there for ps3 owners in NA they won't need to cut a deal with MS.

speaking of heavy rain ben whats the plot like?
every review i have read is really picking it apart stating there are massive gaping holes ruining the storyline.

this will never happen, but it would be really cool if this was the best selling game of the generation.
if a game needs to sell well for the sake of the industry its this.
im sick of the mundane old same old games, thats why im so excited for heavy rain because finally i can pop in a game and truly say i have not played it before.
we really need more games like this, but no developer or publisher will have the cahones unless heavy rain sells through the roof.

I will definetely go with GOW3, much like dancemachine. In Santa Monica I trust, & knowing in the back of my mind that Naughty Dog & Insomniac helped with GOW3 should be enough to assure anyone a purchase is worthy. Plus the game takes up 10 more gigs than Uncharted 2. How bad can that be? It makes me wonder how fun those 50-60 hours can be without bluray, & on a DVD disc.

We can count on God Of War 3 being the best game the PS3 has to offer, just how God Of War 2 was & is thought by many to be the PS2's greatest game. Santa Monica is known to push a console's hardware, Square Enix accomodates for DVD9, & therefore don't do us PS3 owners justice.

So FF beats it even if you play through it just the one time and play GOW up to 5 times...

Still totally getting both anyways... everyone who's into games should too...

For me: None of them. The reason for why I am such a grumpy old tart is mainly because I have never played either of their predecessors (other than GOW and some FF game on PSP, bought it on psn) and neither of them was even remotely my kind of game. I fear GOW to be far too railroad for my liking (as was the PSP gow), and the hit-the-right-button-sequence kind of "fighting" against bosses are just so mindnumblingly silly.

When I read that this same button-sequence-tactics were used in Heavy Rain it fell out of my to-buy list immediately.

Beamboom, that is understandable... but railroad or not... it supposed to be a journey, an adventure... and the first play through is really the best because everything is new and fresh...

"Humpty Grumpy sat on wall...
Controller in hand he had a great fall...
He slashed, shot, and swung an iron ball...
Humpty Grumpy fell off the wall"

"With this and all Kratos did not stall...
He challenged Humpty Grumpy not to call...
Yelling and shouting he struggled to call...
Humpty Grumpy ain't no God of War..."

Q!

"make.believe"

It was an "attempt"... but definitely not perfect! :) For a rushed 2 minute effort... yhea, it was supposed to be tongue and cheek :)

Now that I read my comment again, "Squenix" actually sounds like a breakfast cereal. That makes it even funnier.

The only problem is that Squenix is high in fiber so Kratos will have to take a break from the action to visit the 'little boys room'. That is gonna put a damper on the game my friend.

I don't Kratos eats sh** for breakfast. They should put kratos on a Wheaties box. "Wheaties the breakfast of Champions and Gods"

If I absolutely had to choose, I'd go with FFXIII. I'm still very much on the fence about it, but I feel that even if all the bad stuff I've heard is true, it would still be worth a purchase. GOW will certainly be a fantastic game, and I'm sure I'll own it before the end of the year, but FF will have a much longer campaign and be much more story and character driven.

Actually, I believe it was moved again, this time from April to November. Apparently Sony wants to release it beside their motion sensor controller. I'm not too happy about NA getting it a whole year after everywhere else.

I feel like an jerk because I just cannot seem to get into the GoW series. I did enjoy the psp version, especially for the cheap price that I got it for off PSN. But I rented the collection to try them out and only played the two originals for maybe an hour each before I lost interest. It's a beautiful game, just not my style I guess. Hell, I only played the GoWIII demo for about 5 minutes just to see what it looked like.
Of course, I'm seriously considering just renting FF unless I see some great reviews come out here in the US. It is a sad day for me because EVERY FF has always been a day one purchase for me. I have really high hopes for XIV. I've never gotten much into MMO, but that's because my computers are always outdated.

Easily FFXIII for me. GoW3 will be a rental then I will probably pick it up when the price comes down. I really enjoyed the first two but never bought them for more than $20 each and the price was right considering the amount of gameplay I got out of them.

I'm gonna have to choose GOWIII simply because I don't like Square any more. I don't like to reward developers who won't just release there game and tell anyone who doesn't like it to go to hell. I Santa Monica doesn't have to come out and defend it's game because they made it well enough. If they were under attack for there game I'm pretty confident they would just tell those critics to go to hell.

Ben -

My wife (who is on the fence when it comes to gaming) was so impressed with your Heavy Rain review, she told me that she doesn't want me to play the game unless she is there watching it.

I am still in awe over this.

This could be the game that swings my wife into gaming!!

Bravo Ben!!!

Will do sir.

She has already watched the demo, and knows the game comes out tomorrow. Heck, she reminded me of it this morning! LOL

Can't wait!! 18 years of trying to get her to get into gaming, and Heavy Rain looks like the one game that will finally do it!!

Just pre-ordered Heavy Rain(Took me long enough..). I was already planning on buying the game before the reviews came out. Although the review here was a great read. Always enjoy your reviews here.

As for the next poll. I am getting Final Fantasy XIII over God of War III. Only because I love Final Fantasy, actually looking forward to XIII(Despite all the hate, I've still been a fan), and I've never really gotten into GoW. Not sure why, but I've been trying to finish the first GoW and it just doesn't click with me. Most likely because I am playing it now, instead of when it released(Silly me). I own all the GoW games to date, but haven't had the desire to finish the first one. I can't really say if I'll like GoW3 without finishing the others I guess. It all comes down to personal preferences. (Yes, I know I will get thumbs down galore for not being a die-hard fan of GoW. But I mean no harm and I am only sharing my opinion.)

I hope both games sell incredibly well though. :)
