United Arab Emirates Bans Heavy Rain

Darksiders couldn't survive the rating system of the United Arab Emirates, and neither can Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain.

As reported by Kotaku, Sony has confirmed that the PS3's newest exclusive has been banned in the United Arab Emirates, obviously due to the adult content included in the game. Sony provided Kotaku with the following statement that sheds some light on the situation:

"The UAE's National Media Council (NMC) has banned Heavy Rain on PlayStation 3. Heavy Rain has an 18+ PEGI rating and has been conceived from the earliest stages as a genuinely adult experience. This means that it deals with strong content including blood and nudity, but treats this content in a mature and sensitive manner. The game is not intentionally controversial or sensationalist, and all the themes and content are consistent with what consumers would expect to see in a mainstream Hollywood thriller."

They say what Quantic Dream's David Cage has said in the past, that there is no gratuitous, pointless content in Heavy Rain; it's all part of the storyline and most all the nudity can only be seen via player choice. However, if you happen to live in the region in question, these bans don't appear to be strictly enforced in the UAE, so you just might have to search around a bit for a copy of Heavy Rain. For our part, we're still waiting to see if there's any backlash here in the US due to the potentially offensive content but we're hoping the naysayers have grown up a bit 'round these parts.

Wow, it must be tough living in a country full of children. This isn't Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt here, it's an adult rated game focused towards *gasp* adults. They ban it because it has adult content? Adults can't even view adult content? Don't mind me, I'm just a little confused at this stuff.

Well, I mean I understand all of that. But I don't understand "why" it's like that. Maybe "understand" isn't the right word. It's just so odd how different things can be between countries. Especially when it's about ...video games? Nothing that should really be that important anyways, but it's banned.

Because religion is a powerful thing, especially to the oppressed and uneducated. If you keep people in fear and don't allow them to gain outside knowledge than they will continue to do as you say. The best thing the States ever did was take god out of schools.

Ben, I'm really sorry about this, I know you don't like religious debates on PSXE, but I will not stand and watch my religion being bashed like that.

@Jawknee,Zemus and anyone else:

I'm a muslim, and what you have said is extremely offensive. To call a religion "primitive" just because it doesn't agree with you, doesn't follow your norms or culture is illogical, uncivilized and unacceptable. There is a legit reason why Sharia laws are the way they are: they benefit every person in the community, and the community as a whole. And to call ANY religion primitive just for the fact it is a religion is illogical as well. And it's hypocritical to call a religious figure of a religion a foul name and then go and claim you're civilised.

Like I said, our laws, exist for a reason. In this case (nudity), it's not about being "afraid" or whatever BS reason you came up with. Men are sexually aroused at the sight of a woman's body, no matter what the context. That's just the way men are. Men get aroused, and that affects their judgement and mental functioning when it comes to decisions. Ever wondered why there's a stereotype that men think with their "rod"? Not only that, it allows objectification of women. All our laws have a reason to them.

@ Wolf

Islamic countries base their laws and social norms on the teachings of a random guy from thousands of years ago that supposedly was numero uno with god.

THAT's PRIMITIVE

It has nothing to do with whether I agree with it or not.

You mention that the laws exist for a reason. You're right there is a reason, it's called oppression and restriction. That's the problem with religion, it likes to tell people what to do and why to do it. Religion is NEVER about choice.

If you honestly believe it's okay and current to restrict common everyday choices people make than you're the type of person I can't stand. People that allow it to continue are just as bad as the people that enforce these terrible laws.

@ Jawknee I would ordinarily never get involved in this religious banter on a site like this but you have absolutely crossed the line. A. It is a game site (not that you commenting on religion is totally off topic in this situation) B. The manner in which you went about it is just plain wrong. Islam is something that is practiced TO VARYING DEGREES! Just the same as christianity or any other organized religion. Some countries are ruled by extremists and often times not much to the delight of their citizens. In other cases there are Muslims living in more free countries that don't practice all of the facets of being a muslim. It is a location and personal based decision. While some of the practices of being a Muslim seem controversial to us in the free world, it doesn't give anyone a right to rush in and condemn a religion or act like a superior person merely because you can't grasp why something is indeed the way it is. I think you should never say such ignorant things again. This is coming from a 20 year old male here in the states, never been baptized and do not practice or believe in religion but I know damn well enough to know when enough is enough. It wasn't right.

whilst middle eastern contries are a lot stricter, Islam is not the kind of religion your describing. I am muslim (if you haven't guessed) and i am gonna get, and play heavy rain, and i am not going to jail or hell. Middle east may be strict, but it is not Islam, it is the politicians.

i was at my local game crazy a couple of hours ago getting them to break street date for HR by a couple of hours (which they did). this guy comes in as im reading over the back of heavy rain. he says "that looks good i want that" i asked if he had a ps3? he says "no but itll be better on my 360 anyways" i laughed a bit, i said "no, it wont, its a ps3 exclusive" so he goes "well f*ck that game then anyways" then gives this typical microsoft fanboy rant, "360 all day baby 360 allll daaay!!" at this point im laughing my nuts off. then he says ..............wait for this its funny sh1t....." at least ive got god of war 3 to look forward to next month" i lost it at this point im like hysterically laughing at the fanboy antics. the funny part is that the know_nothing employees are looking at me funny like they didnt get why i was laughing at all. i dont think they knew they were exclusives either. but they damn sure knew All about splinter cell conviction and halo reach and alan wake. gamecrazy used to be pro ps3 but now there just as bad as gamestop. and i told them that by the way. sorry to go on but the people on here are the only ones i know that would get a kick out of such a story.

about the gamestop store at my area... there was actually a girl that's heavily dedicated at her job. i think it must've been approximately 30 minutes when we were talking about the games that are coming out.i started it with the fps games that are coming out and the desire of getting trophies with fps games like fallout 3, and then i changed the subject to the rpg's by saying that demon's souls is very hard.... so she recommended me dragon age and included a comment about the sex trophies and then we went to god of war III. so she recommended me the dante's inferno game to pass the time.

"Mass Effect-4 will only be on Sony's PSP" next year.

Then get the store's defibrillator all charged up, & press both paddles up against his ears ASAP.
And that way, you'll be 100% ready to jump-start his brain that's just flat-lined).

thats BS. Absolute BS. Without religion we'd still be killing each other. You think people could enforce laws and stop murder if they didn't fear a higher power. Yeah, religion itself may be BS, but it's done a hell of a lot of good. These extremists are tarnishing everything for the muslims out there, but even christians do the same- Ireland attacks not too long ago. The fact is that modern law was allowed to be created because of religion, and without it there wouldn't be much of a civilisation, let alone an entertainment industry.

Pedophiles, or deranged insane people do go on from being orphaned nomadic sheperds to becoming leaders of millions, introducing arts & sciences, social welfare, human rights to all races, creeds, and genders (even hermaphrodites), and socials classes, and even animals, to the world, long before women were even allowed to own land, and long before a Martin Luther King. Despite being a 'ruler' in charge of nations spanning larger than most empires have in all of the history of mankind, only within a time spanning 40 years, you can see his house to this day. It was no palace, unlike those who followed after him, spreading malicious propaganda from which you've gotten your "facts", like the "Omayids" and the "Abbasids". He lived an austere life, a selfless one, attested to by history, such as through perspective of the Romans, and Persians.

I have my proof, thank you very much. And since the time of that proof, I thank God, I've never had a doubt. The questions is, do you have yours? Do you have your proof, such that there is no God, no test, no judgement, no after life. Because, if you do, then we both die, and there indeed is nothing...Well then, and I've got nothing to lose. However, if there is something after...something to be prepared for, well I'm already better off. So Good luck to you, too.

But I'm not a betting man. I'm about certainty, and I thank God I have been given that beyond measure.

They should, if they don't I'm going to lose a lot of respect for them.

Okay I got tired of you guys mentioning you'd start a thread in the forums so we could debate in there so I went ahead and did it. The thread is called: "The thread that takes the place of the article about the UAE" and you can find it in the off topic forum on this site.

I went ahead and made an opening statement.

Okay, unfortunately, I just had to delete every post from the time it started to get out of control. I know a lot of you put a lot of thought into long posts and everything, but I've already warned against this. Limited has a link up in the forums; go there and discuss but I will ALSO be watching it closely there. The hostility could get crazy.

And I would hate to think that just because you all know my schedule - which you clearly do - that you'd abuse that knowledge and derail Comment threads while I'm not around. It takes me a while to sort through the mess before I do news and I don't need another chore.

You're all valued readers but please don't do this again.

I honestly thought Shadow was around. Things clearly got out of hand. I sorta made up for my wrong doing by putting up a thread in the forums.

You weren't the only one who participated, and I'm glad you made the thread.

In the future, just make the thread and put a link to it if you want to talk more about the topic. That would help a great deal.

Yeah, I've noticed I'm actually quite surprised at the turnout thus far for the thread.

It was all Worlds fault, I suggest some form of punishment for him.

I won't give them the opportunity to do it again.

And anything at all related to the argument will get deleted. Sorry, but we have to stick to the comment policy, which was violated about seven million times here.

Ben , I think your bias is pretty conspicuous right now . If some of the stuff still posted in this thread was said about your country or religion , you would have IP banned those people .

I didn't even read the posts; there is no bias. There will quite simply be no religion wars in the Comments section.

I'd follow that. Although I don't know if I like the idea of it been run by a man wielding a sword. ;P

I can just imagine some of the commandments though,

"Though shalt have no other controller before me."
"Though shalt enjoy games with pixelated mammaries"
"Though shalt not covet thy neighbours trophies"
"Though shalt teabag thine enemies"

We Pastafarians not only allow for nudity in video games, we encourage it.

We'd rate the game as "MH" for "must have".
