Alpha Protocol "Goes Beyond Fantasy And Space" On June 1

"The Espionage RPG" has been operating covertly for a while, refusing to launch until its good and ready.

Well, after a delay or two, Alpha Protocol finally has a new official release date. Today, Sega has announced that Obsidian Entertainment's promising choice-driven RPG - described as "fiercely original" in the press release - will be on store shelves for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on June 1. With an experience similar to that of watching an episode of "24," this adventure should feel intense and action-packed, with a "new level of modern day realism." You will have to discover the terrorists who shot down a passenger airliner with a missile, and depending on your decisions, the course of the story can change dramatically. Who will you befriend and who will you eliminate? As rookie spy Michael Thorton, we will have "unprecedented control over the development of his abilities and interactions with other characters." Said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing for Sega of America:

"The wait has been worth it. It is time for an RPG to go beyond fantasy and space. The genre needs a shot in the arm, and renowned developer Obsidian has delivered. Alpha Protocol will be the absolute best it can be, and we look forward to revealing fresh aspects of it to the community in the upcoming months."

That's a pretty strong statement and we're hoping Alpha Protocol will make good on his promise. If you're convinced, feel free to pre-order at GameStop; doing so will net you the Exclusive Assault Pack, which features exclusive weapons and ammo like the UC Regulator high damage shotgun and the Rittergroupen Grizzly high accuracy rifle. For more info and media on the game, head on over to the official site.

What a gomer... anyway I'm all skeptical about this game. I wonder if this is devved for everyone or if we get stuck with another poopy 360 port from Sega. My issue is that an RPG set in the real world just doesn't sound all that interesting. But I'll hold off judgment, the delays probably don't bode well though.

Wait, shouldn't Obsidian be hard at work on my Fallout New Vegas? Get it done, then work on this...thing.

This is really the only thing I've read about this game, but it seems promising... I'm not sure if it'll be worth my $60 right when it comes out, but that's for the reviews to decide.
I'm all about something original.

I was sort of excited about this, but then they delayed it, and my excitement dwindled. Right now it's at zero :)

Anyhow, I'll check out the review if and when it comes out. Who knows, might be good.

Maybe this game will get non-rpg players into the fold at least.

I hope this is good, but I've hated everything Sega has had their name on this gen so far. Sega has not been kind to the ps3, but I really hope they get their spit together because this game sounds awesome. I love the idea of mixing genres as I think it could lead to some pretty awesome things down the road, Fallout 3 did a good job of balancing fps/rpg I thought and so did 2k in the Bioshock games, but they shouldnt have to throw the fps element in there to catch our attention. I want to see games that don't need fps in the title to appeal to people, they need to drop that safety net as I believe that ship has run it's course

I'm not understanding the concept.

come to think of it I have no idea if it's first or third person, but I'm assuming the RPG elements will consist of some kind of leveling system.

I don't believe a game should be labeled an RPG just because it has some sort of leveling system.

The freaky thing is that even RPGs are getting rid of basic leveling systems.

Everything is becoming a gross perversion of itself. Pretty soon I'm sure you, Worlds, will put down your sword and pick up a gun and still try to call yourself a ninja.

sad times we live in.
sad times.

The old genre distinctions need to die. A game should have whatever features it needs to be the best version of itself it can be.

@aaron I didn't play Valkyria Chronicles, I'm assuming it's a RPG based on what I've read. I like RPG's so I'd probably like Valkyria, but it's also exclusive to ps3, most multiplatform efforts by Sega are better on the 360 or just crap games, so I'm guessing we get ports.
