Sony Addresses Freezing, Crashing Issues With Heavy Rain

It's easily one of the best games of the generation, but a few people have complained of freezing and crashing issues in Heavy Rain.

These complaints have reached Sony, and a developer has responded in a thread over at the PlayStation forums, where troubled players have described some of the problems they're experiencing. At first, it was believed that these issues were directly related to the patch that recently released for the game, but that doesn't appear to be true. The developer does say not to shut off the system if the screen goes black; he says wait 5 minutes before doing anything. The post he made to the community reads:

"Hi folks, this is just to let you know that the issues reported in this thread and elsewhere are being looked into. We're currently trying to establish any common factors for people who are experiencing game freezing so if you are having trouble please be as thorough as possible with regards to your PS3 setup - are you using a launch version of the console or a brand new slim, playing in standard or high definition (I'm not suggesting that these are potential causes, just making the point)... any information you can give may help to find where the issue lies."

Sometimes, the game may take a bit longer to save than normal, but this also doesn't mean the game has crashed so be patient. As of now, they're working on gathering in more information concerning the issues at hand, so they can more easily address the problem with a future fix-it patch (perhaps). They do say the freezing hasn't been rampant; it has only affected a small percentage of the PS3 owner population, so that's good news. Just from my side, I'm on my fourth play-through and I've never had the game freeze (I have the new Slim), and we've only heard a few scattered complaints from the readers. It definitely happens, but it doesn't seem to be a prevalent problem, as Sony says.

I had an issue with Jayden at the nightclub where I couldn't move. When I first got there I looked at his thoughts and then couldn't do anything but look around. I stopped the game using the games menu and hit continue.

I was able to get the exact same results a second time. A third time, I was able to move by avoiding looking at his thoughts until after I moved the character.

I didn't report the issue as I was able to work around it.

I agree this is one of the best games of this gen.

I had an issue too with Jayden in the club. The camera wouldn't change automatically when it was suppose to. I had to restart the game for it to work. Other then that problem I didn't have any other issues.

I haven't encountered any of these issues. But anyway, I was buzzed when I found out who the killer was. I'll be starting my 2nd playthrough tomorrow.

The issue I had was with Jayden in the hotel. While the scen played through, I could still move around and stuff but his character, more specifically his body and clothes were rapidly blinking and would stretch or move. Moved to the next scene with Shelby, and he was doing the same thing. So i decided to go to the main menu, and the text was rapidly blinking too.

I just turned off my ps3 for a while, and when I played it next, it didn't do it anymore.

Playin on my launch slim, Ive experienced freezing twice and a black screen after the begining of the next screen right after the killer reveal. Turned off ps3, turned back on, then loaded chapter. It worked, thank god.

yep same here got the black screen when it changed players happened twice i waited for a while but nothing happened so i just turned the ps3 off and it worked fine next time round.But other then that WOW what a game!

That kind of stuff was like hitting a brick wall. The game is so great that sudden freezes felt completely out of place. Fallout 3 froze constantly, but visually, it wasnt that great to begin with. Bugs didnt seem so out of place there.

The 360 definitely has it's fair share of game issues, too, however with my 60 gig ps3, I only remember having screen freezing in one title (R&C:FTOD), and it was fixed with an update/patch.

With my 360, it use to happen even more for me with Ninja Gaiden 2, but I've heard it happening to other recent titles, too, like with Mass Effect 2. However, it's even more nerve-wrecking when it happens on my 360, because I've been told that is suppose to happen more often when your system is on it's way to red-ringing.

I will agree that there are some personalities here that are just as egocentrically rotten as the most rabid xbots, but overall we have a very fair-minded community.

Although, I don't agree the 360 is w/o game issues, and especially not more so than the ps3, I will admit I like the 360's vibrancy in color display, and the tradition style, polish, and level design of Nintendo first party games are timeless.

I think Sonic1899 implying that you were a fanboy was unnecessary, but I also think preference for a particular console doesn't automatically indicate fanboyism.

And do you think they should take shots? No. I opened this page to read about Heavy Rain, not for some poster to compare consoles. And even though there's people here to take shots at the 360, it's passable since THIS IS A PLAYSTATION SITE. Xbox sites take shots at the PS3 too, but as long as that stays THERE, it's all good.

Great game, luckily I haven't had any problems (KNOCK KNOCK * the sound of me knocking on wood*). Its good to see that they are looking into these issues so that people can enjoy this game for all it truly is.

I will be starting my second play through tommorow.

I don't have it yet but this is good to know, I wouldn't normally wait 5 whole minutes to turn off my system after a freeze. I probably won't have any issues though because whenever people have some massive problem my 80 gig partially BC fatty dodges it like Neo in the Matrix.

Say Ben, if you are playing on a slim what did you do with your old chubby lady?

I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to do when the slim freezes other than eject the disc and reinsert it. The system then resets itself instead of me forcing it to quit by holding down the button.

No, it doesn't have one. It's in constant standby when not in use.

Edit: I use a surge protector on all my electronics, so constant standy is no big deal really.

I traded in the old fat one for the Slim when GameStop was offering $150 in trade for the older systems.

It was the original 60GB with the PS2 b/c but I have a PS2 Slim hooked up all the time, anyway (and PS2 and PS1 games play better on it).

i had some problems of sound synchronization and some freeze on the mall scene. i think it was because i installed the game an played right away, but when i restart the game i didn't got any more problems, until now everything is fine great game still haven't finished.

I had a ton of choppiness in the first chapter the first time i played through, but after that it has been relatively stable. There have been a few little quirks but nothing like the 2-3 second pauses and skips i had the first time around.

I'm four hours in and loving it.

I did have one bug to begin will. I walked down the stairs in the house, took a wrong turn half way down and proceeded to walk through the wall and up into the clouds.
Needed to restart..

Absolutely loving the game though. Cried after the car accident at the start. Having two kids makes that sort of thing hard to take.
The intro scene is outstanding.

Had to take a break. Want to savour the first play through. Can't rush it!

Just finished my first play through...

Head in the clouds! This has been my most immense and immersive video game experience in 25 years.

Heavy Rain deserves all its accolades and praise. The depth of connection you have with these characters is amazing. The pressure that builds up knowing that one lapse of concentration can kill them off is just superb.

Everyone who plays will have their own experience. I've now got these questions that are floating around my head. Need to play through again to make up for the my mistakes the first time through.

Congratulations Quantic Dreams. Heavy Rain is outstanding. I want all my non-video game friends, parents and brother to play it now... Spread the love!

Still having my ps3 repaired in play n trade!!! Man im still pissed! of all the times my ps3 couldve broke down!! im getting this game though def. when i get my ps3 back, ill get the game with it!!

Currently, I don't own Heavy Rain, but glad to wait until all these issues are sorted out; in fact, I won't buy games typically on launch day until they have been out a little... this is to judge from reviewers and the community at large how the game is and how it is performing.... so far I have never had an issue with any game on my launch 60GB model... and no problems with the actual hardware either, it has been smooth running from day 1.

I hope my luck holds out :) Sorry to hear some of you are having problems, but it is not surprising... these titles are big and complex...

this drove me absolutley INSANE! last night.
waited all freaking day looking at the clock and it honestly felt time was going backwards. finally got out of tafe and raced to EB to pick up my copy than raced home only to be greeted by a painfully long install than the very first scene of the game the audio kept dropping out than 5 minutes later froze.
than every single time i booted up the game, it froze in that exact spot.
cost of game 120 dollars.
time spent trying to play game 3 hours.
progress made in the game, roughly 10 minutes.
but having the pleasure of spending 3 hours straight screaming your bloody head off PRICELESS!
for worry free enjoyable gaming theres the PC, for everything else theres the PS3.
god this is seriously driving me NUTS!
sony, for GODS SAKE HIRE SOME PROPPER QUALITY ASSURANCE PEOPLE!

depends what you do with your computer, and how old it is.
if you have a new powerful rig like i do than yea its a hell of allot easier than it is on the ps3. i dont have to worry about downloading a frigging patch every time i want to play a game.
if you have a older PC or start playing around with the clocks and stuff, well thats a whole different kettle of fish.

my husband finished the game with no problems at all hes on his second go at it, but I have a launched 20gig and whenever theres any issues with games freezing ect.. my console always seems to miss it (knock on wood)

@ ____ not sure what you're talking about with the download of the game it only takes 10 mins Bioshock was hell of alot longer. and why is the cost of the game 120? if you have issues take it back to the store for a new one? and PC gaming has it cluster F***ks as well

Anytime I hear people complain on freezing ect.. and because it's a low majority of people I look into a few things did they mod their console cause updates tend to not work properly when you do that sorta thing, do you clean u're system is it well ventelated look back at the manual. Not saying these two things are the issue but sometimes they are somewhat the cause of the issue.

I havent got the game yet, i need to get myself a job first and heavy rain will just screw with that. i mean 22 playthroughs to get all endings. thats gonna take a chunk out of my gaming/personal life.

yea the install not download.
and its got nothing to do with the system its the game.
i have a funny feeling it has something to do with the way the game is installing onto the HDD because before install i could go into menus, sub menus no problem without delay.
now it takes 3-5 seconds to load a menu, or sub menu.
and to load the game takes a freaking long time!
cant believe this, my most anticipated title for the year and i cant even play it!

Why don't you take a bit of advice from the PC world and uninstall and reinstall the game data and patch?

Also, I would be interested to know what video card(s) and OS you are running in this rig of yours.

9800GTX+ and windows 7.
im waiting till the DX11 cards come out, but probably wont buy one for a while.
nvidia are yet to announce a price but some sites have pre orders set at 600 for the 470GTX and 800 for the 480.

I've been playing the game on my 60 gig, and I only experienced one crash thus far. And I don't think it had anything to do with the game itself.
My PS3 (just this model, my original, not my slim) was actually running extremely low on hard drive space, and all my games with an autosave feature would crash whenever they came to the next save point. But as soon as I finished transferring some major files, 'Heavy Rain' began running perfectly as it had before.
I'm sorry to hear that some are encountering such difficulties, as I was just thinking last nite how a lot of people won't 'get it', but it still performs like a dream. Obviously not true for everybody.

well i just finished the game and before finishing it, the game froze when madison was in the hospital... all i did was just quit the game and restarted it again (wanted to finish the game badly) and boom!!! i came through :D

i had it freeze 1 time on top of the motel after making a decision it locked up. this is the only time ive had an issue. restarted and it was fine. i am now on my 4th play through. god what an experience. it could only be better if they made the killer somebody else on different playthroughs.

Just picked up a copy from Gamestop, tonight. So far, I've played until after the Shelby fight, and no problems except for audio muting out for a second, or less than that (when the father was taking out the plates for lunch in the beginning). I have a 60gb model (Feb 2007 manufacture date), playing at 720p, in full RGB Full Range (HDMI), Super-White on.

I'm liking the game. More movie than game, yet in some ways, more immersive than a movie. When looking for Jason in the mall, for example, hearing the father's breath shortening, I could not help feel the same anxiety, with the physical symptoms, resonating in myself. Sure, I've been sucked in to a movie, but not like that, and can't say I ever experienced that in a game before, either. Wonderful.

you know what, i just read that gamekicker.com gave heavy rain a 4/10. their reason, the game wasnt interactive enough and it was more of a movie. guess the guy is one of those gamers that prefer mindless run and gun vs good story.

Definitely. While Heavy Rain may have less interactivity than the average game, giving it a 4/10 isn't doing justice to the product at all, simply because it accomplishes what most games (or movies) haven't been able to do. Like I said, the level of immersion was such that when I was looking for Jason in the mall, my mouth actually started drying up! When I was playing with my kids, I felt a virtual sense of joy. When I cuddled with my wife in the kitchen, I got unexpectedly, erm, 'excited'. When I was questioning victims as a detective, I felt sorrow and empathy and cautiousness. The experience is incredibly vicarious like none other I can think of.

And for what the game lacks in interactivity in terms of necessary, immediate control inputs, it makes up for in terms of influence over outcome and consequences. While most games end with a single finale (or with slightly varied couple), and progress as a linear, and immutable chain of events, this one has a plethora of endings, not to mention a variety of possible intermediate outcomes.

I've also heard the same criticism worded another way, reducing the game to basically a 'choose your own adventure' novel. While this is true, one can also reduce all hack'n slash games to 'pin ball machine games', all online shooters to virtual 'tag' or 'paint ball matches', and all turn based rpg's as 'card games'. But we know, that wouldn't be doing justice to video gaming as a legitimate medium of entertainment and art.

My game only crashed once so it wasn't a big deal for me. But I did find it little odd that when I play the game it already downloading patch.

Good to know I'm not the only one with these freeze problems. I own the 80gig B/C MGS4 bundle version. I wonder if the percentage of people having this issue is really all that small?

Last night, I ended up having screen-freezing during the FBI guy's first investigation scene (after Blake left the scene, and I was happening to question other officers). I tried ejecting and rejecting the disc (as I used to do with launch titles), without hard-rebooting the system, then the screen went black, and the sound cutting off totally. I was careful not to restart the ps3, and after about 30 seconds, the ps3 restarted it self.

It happened only once, but I recommend to others, whether this happens with this game, or during a system update for example, don't try restarting the ps3 immediately, if the screen goes black. Since, if the system is either stalling or delayed while loading, restarting the unit will brick the system, which I'm suspecting happens to the majority of users reporting bricked systems. Black screen happened to me exactly once before, during system update 3.01, I believe, except that it lasted for about 10 mins, after the download and install processes.

Edit: I meant "ejecting and reinserting the disc", not "ejecting and rejecting the disc", and by "launch titles", I meant R&C:FTOD, which isn't a launch title...

Game hasn't crashed on me but the one thing that's getting on my nerves is the walking. Like when you walk into a room and for some reason the character will walk back out or head into the wall or walk around in a circle once. Not sure if glitch or not but it does it a lot.

It's funny that we all have about 1 freezing issue and they all come at different points in the game. I finished my first playthrough without a problem. Then when I went back to retry some scenes it froze during The Lizard trial.

Very weird, but still a fantastic game. Dont let a couple of freezes bother you. Everyone needs to play this game. I love going back to see the alternate endings.

I wonder if any one could help me out? I would prefer to play the game with French audio, however it will not let me select any thing other than English? Any idea as to why this is?

I had a few audio drops in the beginning chapter, and a 2-3 crashes max, i just restarted my ps3, i did take their advice but it didnt come good. I'd say all up though, they came out well, some ppl are really crying wolf with the bugs and glitches which are being reported, it really isnt that bad.

I had the game freeze up on me twice during my first playthrough. Did ruin the mood a little as it happened at times I was fully engrossed in what was going on but after a quick reboot was good to go again. A few audio quirks as well but nothing to take away from a great experience. I wouldn't say it's much of an issue overall, I do get nervous whenever a game freezes up on me though wondering if my machine is about to brick itself.

hey guys iv a weird problem my version froze when i was ethan in the house with shaun i tried to sit down but it froze so i turned it off but then my PS3 wudnt turn off and it took me ages to get the console to even recognise the disk. i eventually got it working but now its happened agen wen i was throwin the boomerang in the park...any ideas?? hope yas can help
