GoWIII Striving For Visual Quality Of Killzone 2, Uncharted 2

Whenever you set the bar, you have to expect that others will use that bar as a measuring stick for their own projects.

The projects don't really even need to be related; just ask God of War III director Stig Asmussen. According to CVG citing a recent OPM interview with Asmussen, he said Guerrilla's excellent FPS, Killzone 2, served as definite inspiration. In fact, he added that he'd like GoWIII to be "talked about in the same way." Not surprisingly, he added that Uncharted 2 also managed to "raise the bar" yet again, so if you think the God of War team hasn't been taking cues from the best of the best this generation, think again. Said Asmussen:

"I think we were really scared about [God Of War 3's] visuals up until E3. When we did our press release back in March, we felt pretty good about it. But then we see games that are raising the bar like Uncharted 2 obviously did, and Killzone 2. I think we just need to make something that, you know, people will talk about in the same way. It's a different game, but we'd be happy at that point."

Yeah, well, based on what we've heard from those who have gone hands-on with the final product, GoWIII may once again up the visual ante; it could indeed be the best-looking game of the generation, perhaps knocking Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 off their lofty pedestals. Then, when Gran Turismo 5 releases later this year, will we once again be seeing a game that strives to be called the "best looking title of the generation"? The more developers continue to push themselves and each other, the more we'll all benefit.

From some of the video I've seen of GOW III, they look like they will give U2 and Killzone 2 a run for the money.

Bigrailer: I, too, recommend Heavy Rain. I was not particularly eager to play it (haven't played a game like it before, and I didn't expect to be much of a fan of the genre), but after trading in Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, and InFamous (which I platinumed, and played through like 5 times), I got my copy from Gamestop for 33 dollars and some change. And after playing it for few hours last night, I don't regret it. Very unique title, and worthy of every ps3 owner's library.

Gotta agree with World and john...

@ LittleBigMidget - All of those games are worth more than GoWIII man...you can't trade that many games for just 1 game.

@ Shams - Same thing man...How could you trade in Gear2 and inFamous just to get 1 title for 1/2 price?? I agree that Heavy Rain is great, but I still can't see getting rid of 2 good titles just to get one for 1/2 off.....just my opinion though.

Yup, SvenMD. I understand. But, I'm not really much of a collector, and I played the games to death (though I'm sure I could've continued playing inFamous many more times, but I had to find a reason not to). I'm sure I'll use Glyde in the near future, to get potentially more value for my games.

I'm somewhat tempted to get GOW3 even though I haven't played the first two. I bought the GOW Collection about a week ago, but I can't really get through it.

Is it too difficult or are you just not interested? If it's the former you should try an easier difficulty. The story is terrific, the gameplay and battles too. World class pacing and presentation.

Logix - I was in the process of running through the GoW Collection before Heavy Rain came out. So far they are good. I think the first game starts off kinda slow and the story picks up in the middle and at the end.

Now that I beat HR, I'll start running through GoWII, which is better than the first so far.

But I couldn't recommend picking up the 3rd entry in a series without playing the first 2...just not a good idea.

This Asmussen guy is brilliant. I really like him. He doesn't want to just make a game so he can get a paycheck. He wants to make a game that people will talk about and be proud to own. That's what gaming is really about, good games and good conversations about games.

yes i completely agree! I read an article in a recent game informer about GOW3, and he had mentioned that he (and the rest of the team) strive to make the game for the consumer. Going as far as how they do the battle system. He said something along the lines of learning the moves, and as you do, learning how to use them in different situations. They basically throw a move at you for you to learn and after you do, the next boss you face, that move will help you out in some ways. he also went ton to say that this happens through the whole game, and by the end you should have the battle system down, and then they will throw the whole sink at you!

That to me is a developer looking at the small things. I mean a battle system is a battle system, but to go out of the way to help get the player through it, and make it so certain moves make the game easier or atleast put Kratos and Athenas blade's at an advantage in certain parts is great to me. Otherwise your just button mashing, and Athena's blades are just thrown around. No doubt still causing mass amounts of damage though! ;)

Seriously. Listen to him. He sounds like a man who's speaking from the game developer trenches. Like he popped his head up from down bellow to let us know that they're doing a really great job in keeping up with the competition. We're all sitting here thinking, yeah, whatever, you're game is king buddy.

It will be very interesting to see the final product and compare the graphics to KZ2, U2, and Heavy Rain, this is always the excitingest time in a Sony console's life: when the devs finally push utilize the hardware to kick it up a notch cuz it only gets better from there.

I drove by Gamestop today and they had two huge GOWIII posters up. I bet the bots hate that.

without trying to sound like a fan boy. Its funny cus alot of people are saying this is the year of the 360. Articles continue to put out posts containing the 5-6 (not sure exact number) exclusives the 360 will get this year. Saying things like its gonna be a huge year for the 360 (yeah compared to last year maybe lol) but for the industry its really not. But Sony has already released almost that amount up til' now, just this year! I dont get it.

Dude, just import one, since that'll save you like half that price or sumthin, unless your government does that import tax thing, then I'd say, wait for a bundle. To me, it's worth it, got my PS3 for 500 euros a couple of years ago and I'm still lovin' it. So I'd say, get em anyways, go rob a bank or a gamestop or sumthin(ok, if you do that, don't tell anybody you got that idea from me)

It will definitely go over the Uncharted and Killzone bar.
I don't think it should be compared to GT5 though, seeing as that isn't a heavily action packed game, with lotsa stuff comin' at you, except for trees and walls or sumthin, when you suck at driving games like me, except for burnout, can race like a mothaf*ckr there.

Yeah, I'm kinda strange now I think about it.
I suck at those cod type fps' not so much at resistance, nor do I suck at 3rd person shooters. I suck at realistic racing games like Gran Turismo, don't suck at burnout...
Anyways, can't wait for God of War, something I definitely don't suck at, at least not at the first two...

From what I understood from reading the French PSM review, in the graphics and technical department, "forget U2, and forget all other games that you wanted up until now".

Sonnatine, another member here, was also saying, according to that review, they've totally redone that section that was in the demo. So, I think it is safe to say Stig Asmussen has made good on his goal, and perhaps superseded it. I'll, of course, wait for psxextreme's review.

The rest of the world including Japan and all Europe arrives after 3 days of the American release date. Yeah I am proud that we Americans are LUCKY with the greatest action adventure game of all time. Sorry!!!!!

What are you talking about?? I saw at gametrailers.com the first 21 minutes of God of War 3 fully developed and easily beats Uncharted 2 and killzone 2 out of the water. It's just mind blowing!!!!!! God of War 3 pushes the Ps3 to the max. I am not KIDDING go watch for yourself. God of War 3 KING of GRAPHICS. MIND BLOWING!!!!!!
