PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 sales in Japan

  On Sunday, Sony touted the shipment of 1 million PlayStation 3 consoles in the North American region, a goal they met before the closing of 2006. In the article I had estimated the shipment numbers of Japan to be between 500k-600k units. Indeed my estimate was pretty spot on.

   Famitsu (courtesy of Enterbrain) has published that from launch until the end of December, 466,716 PS3s ended up in the hands of a customer, meaning somewhere in the region of 600k consoles have been shipped to stores.

   The cheaper, and novice accessible, Nintendo Wii went on to sell just shy of 1 million systems, totaling: 989, 118. Meanwhile the Microsoft Xbox 360 continues to perform poorly, having sold 290,467 consoles for all of 2006. Of that number, 100k units were sold solely in December, with the launch of Blue Dragon.

   In case you're wondering what the importance of Blue Dragon is: it's the creation of former Final Fantasy director, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and his Mistwalker studio. Moreover, the game's art was done by Akira Toriyama, of Dragon Ball Z fame. A recipe for success, indeed, in Japan.
