Kudos to Oyashira (did i get that right?) for figuring out the issue.

It was a date issue with leap year hard programmed to be 2010 and every 4 years after. I think Sony has 2 ways of fixing this;

1. Major recall - which probably won't happen
2. Firmware update to handle leap year every 2 years

Best case scenario, the problem will right it self in 2 and a half hours when it reaches 12 midnight GMT when the internal clock rolls itself over to March 1, a date that exists.

It should just be a firmware update as it's a glitch in the GameOS...Linux via Other OS isn't affected. It's odd that the Slim models wouldn't be affected...unless there is a new clock chip in the Slim that uses alternate code in the firmware.

Hopefully not, but no one can give a firm confirmation if any data will be lost. Find out your GMT time (East Coast is -5) subtract that from mid-night. We may all find out what happens by then.

For me that'll be around 7:00 PM EST. If I'm not posting any further on here, that means my PS3 is working again. If I'm back, then it's still broke.

I also wonder if a firmware update is NEEDED to fix the issue if it might require updating via a USB storage device after downloading it on a computer? That would CERTAINLY suck for millions of people to have to do that.

I don't think that's needed, it should be able to do a network based update.

The only reason I could see a firmware update being required would be to provide an automatic work-around in the case that this RTC problem happens again.

Good news? We're back up.

Bad news? Any games you played yesterday may have erased you trophies.

I just lost all trophies from Dragon Age, MW2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, White Knight Chronicles.

Trying to see if I can get them back.

I did, that didn't resolve it. I had to start the game and check trophies again and they were back.

Steps to get your trophies back;

1. Start up the game
2. Exit the game
3. Resync your trophies with PSN

You should be good to go.

Unfortunately, any game you might have attempted to play during the problem (for me WKC) that had new trophies not yet synced with PSN may be lost.

Luckily that is only 1 bronze trophy that I think I can do again with a second play through... maybe. Makes me angry, but losing 1 trophy is acceptable.

Yeah I'm sorry, but the blog update and twitter page is kinda useless....says the same thing we already know. Just fix it.

"Luckily" I was on call for 24 hours yesterday and missed all the shinanigans or else I would probably be hella-pissed to lose a Sunday of gaming.

So now after reading everything I just decided not to even turn my PS3 on until this thing is cleared up.....which I hope is freakin' SOON.

But people need to stop blaiming Sony. It's not like they saw this coming or planned it...but they should be working around the clock to fix it.

Who do we blame? Microsoft? Nintendo? Ourselves?

I'm sure we are all certain this was not intentional, but Sony is responsible for not catching the problem before it occurred.

I work in the QA department of a software developing company. Testing our product against leap year is on our list of manual and automated tests. If a bug makes it out to the general public, our company does not shy away from who is at fault - it is very clear who did not do their jobs - our department. Granted some issues will slip through, but we don't say it wasn't our fault. We learn from the experience and make sure to be more creative in our tests.

It is Sony's fault. Its a bug int he firmware they wrote, so obviously somebody missed this when they were programming the calendar.

Im not upset with Sony, but it is their fault. Shit happens and it was an honest mistake. It seems like they are working pretty hard on fixing it ASAP, so its not that big of a deal.

I wouldn't normally blame anyone for this .. **it happens, right? Unfortunately, in this case, Sony was aware of the problem early on.

Think about it gang. Sony releases the fat system years ago. Then they release the Slim model. A bug appears yesterday that affects ONLY the fat systems ... the slim models are totally unaffected. That means that Sony had prior knowledge of this bug in the OS, fixed it for the new Slim models, and kept mum about the issue to the early adopters.

Why would they do this? Certainly, it wasn't intentional to lockout a portion of their installed user base. I think they just didn't know how to address the issue, and decided on a "wait-and-see" approach to the situation.

It probably will be fixed ... but really, my faith in corporate America's interests in the satisfaction of their clients went south years ago. I come from an old camp of thinking ... you purchase something now, twenty years from now it should still work...

.. not so. Not anymore.

Not being able to play my PS3 for 24 hours is not the concern - at least not my concern. What does concern me is the possible data loss. Being that I am on my 3rd PS3, I have already lost hundreds of hours of game save data and irreplaceable photos and videos.

I don't necessarily agree with people who are going after Sony with pitchforks in hand, but I can see their frustration with people out there who are so blind by fanboyism they can't see their faults. Love is blind. I like Sony products, but I acknowledge they have issues. I hate Microsoft, but I acknowledge they have useful, if not good, products.

Mistakes happen. Bugs slip through. I understand that. What I don't like is people saying "it's not Sony's fault". People need to stop taking blame away from where it's due. Sony screwed up. Simple. Sony can fix it. Simple. By no means is this -not- Sony's problem.

Sony is fully aware that this needs to be resolved quickly and have it swept under the carpet before it begins to effect their bottom line.

I like how some people (not here) sing the praises of (insert preferred console here) until some small unfortunate oversight (that in all likelihood will be resolved in 48 hours) occurs, then said console manufacturer goes to #1 on the s***list. The exception to this rule is the Xbox 360 fanbase, they apparently have enough money to throw into replacing multiple consoles and the brain capacity to pay for their internet twice. AT LEAST NO PS3's YLOD OUT OF THE BOX

The Slims and Fats have different firmwares, probably developed by two separate teams who share code repositories. The Fat team probably missed something that only affects the hardware the Fats have, and that fix wouldnt have been shared because the Slim team wouldnt bother looking at stacks for hardware only the Fat has.

It means no such thing. The real time clock is hardware not software. If there is a problem in the RTC used in the Phat models it can be fixed by firmware. However, that absolutely does not indicate that Sony had any prior knowledge of this. In fact, the fact that the RTC has an issue and they did not fix it in firmware already indicates that they had no idea that this was about to be an issue.

The RTC used is probably an off the shelf device, the same as it is in virtually every other computer system that uses a RTC. IBM had a problem with RTCs in their PCs years and years back (pre 2k) that did something similar to their PCs then.

But the thing that you and everyone else needs to understand is that the fault probably doesn't lay in the firmware it's in the RTC hardware.

you wont lose all your trophies, as soon as they get the clock fixed the trophy system will no longer have a problem with the date and will function properly it has been stated all around the web that this will not be a problem, however if you do manage to somehow play a game with trophies or update system or save data there could be unforeseen problems with this new data.

Well my Borderlands trophies literally vanished but I knew they'd be backed up elsewhere. Signed into Playstation.com and it says I have 80% of the Borderlands trophies hmm ...pretty sure I had 86% before since the new dlc. Everyone might want to give that a check and see if anything looks funny to you guys. Thanks for the updates Ben, nice to have you lookin out for us fatties.

so by tomorrow ill have my slim and my bc 60 will be up and running

i know i know< i could have told the guy what the problem was but how does that benefit me?
after all he was the one that rushed it onto craigslist! right?

in borderlands, i completed my fifth mission in new haven last night, and no trophy unlocked. im wondering if that trophy is just gone now until i do a second playthrough, or if it will sync up when they fix this issue. glad i was tired when i got out of work last night and only played for 45 minutes.

Well, at least Sony is trying to fix the problem, unlike M$ forcing you to buy another console....

Yeah, I noticed the problem as well, but I thought it had something to do with my PS3 running out of space in the HDD (I only have 15 GB left out of 79 GB)....

Anyway, hope this get fixed ASAP because this bug facked up my Silent Hill Homecoming Save States....

LOL, you're correct, MS does consider the RROD a minor bug (despite creating a 33% mortality rate in their first half dozen Xbox360 motherboard revisions). So if that is a minor bug, then a single day outage because of a buggy real time clock must be so insignificant as to be unrecognized.

I can't blame them jawknee, they have to have SOMETHING to do besides lie about how bad the graphics suck in Uncharted 2, Cry because MGS4 didn't come to their console, and B**ch about not getting a game with a "predictable story" that's "nothing but QTE's". We might be doing the same thing if we were the laughing stock of this generation with RROD, M$ banning modded consoles (which I agree with), paying twice for internet, and not having many good exclusives in 2010. The xboxers need to pick on us because theyre bored and they know how much longer our exclusives are and how much better our exclusives look than theirs (It might be capable of better graphics, but dvd9 means no room for all that wonderful looking information). Rediculous. They even admit in the article it doesn't have to do with the PSN, but with which SKU you have (older phat models). I remember when LIVE went down for at least one weekend a couple years back during Christmas holidays, and there was no such headlines, despite it affecting all users. And now, it hasn't even been a couple days, and the problem isn't even affecting all users, and they say PSN is dead. They wish, right? Ridiculous.

Xbox Live went down early last year near the same time. With XBL now being slower than before, a failure rate over 50%, 'exclusive' games that aren't even exclusive (you can buy L4D and ME2 on pc) a disk format with limited capacity, and being forced to pay $50 a year for a service you can get for free, do you REALLY think the xbox 360 is that much better? Please explain why I shouldn't sell the one I have for a few PS3 games?

It doesn't matter if it is online or not. If the system has the bug it is affected. A friend of mine doesn't even have internet and he cannot play any games and his clock reset to 1999. Best not to play anything until the issue is fixed.

A firmware update will not fix this.
Unless the internal bios clock fixes itself which i really hope happens.
Nothing short of removing the bios battery or flashing will fix this problem so no this will not be fixed in 24 hours if the internal clock does not right itself.
If for some reason it does not we will all be sending them back for repair something which Sony can ill afford.

They can create a work around. Update the PS3 OS to expect leap year every 2 years rather than 4. This way when the invalid leap year date arrives in 2014 and passes through an invalid date of Feb 29 2014, the OS will be able to handle it.

In laymen terms; As of now the internal clock is trying to tell the PS3 to use a date it hasn't been programmed for. So program the OS to accept the date. It's not a fix, but it's a adequate band-aid.

So, the problem is with the internal clock and the internet? The internal one thinks that this is a leap year which results in a crash when it syncs with the internet, if I'm reading it correctly.

Has anyone tried removing the battery from the board for a minute and then replacing it?

@JP...This cannot be true. There are people that have systems not connected to internet and they are still having the same issue. It is a code error on the earlier models.

I believe some of the early posts hit the nail on the head. The ps3 had a meltdown due to an error in the code that has to due with leap year (or in this case, lack thereof).

@Cavan..The only way to update will be to download the update via PC onto a flash drive.

Hey guys;

Remember, some firmware updates are required before accessing the PSN...

PSN access is not needed to initiate a firmware patch. Now, if the PS3 does not have an internet connection the PC method will be needed to prevent the issue from happening again.

i dont mind my ps3 being out of action but all my data on heavy rain has gone missing, heavy rain trophies, the heavy rain dynamic theme and my heavy rain dlc, nothinge else got affected, which was weird

I think it's time they replaced some personnel at Sony. Between the firmware updates and their bugs, and now this - the quality is sinking beneath the level I deem acceptable. I paid a premium price, I expect a premium product.

Have any of you guys seen the recent articles? Now when I google news PS3, I read articles claiming that 'PS3 owners are now moving to Xbox' and 'PS3 FF XIII will have less sales' all because of this downtime. WTF?? When Xbox Live went down last year, there has hardly anyone taking it that seriously; now that it happened with PSN the PS3 is a bad system? I don't understand people anymore :P

Simply put....the code error was for this year. Going by early posts, the code was entered to tell the PS3 that leap year was in 2010. Using that logic, you would think we would have had some sort of issue in 2008 (the last leap year) but I don't remember my PS3 skipping from Feb. 28th to March 1st.

IGN is calling it 'the biggest system blackout in the history of video games'. give me a break. alot of ms/xbox industry folks were waiting for something like this since they're watching PS3 finally out pace the Xbox in both sales and game quality (ps3 exclusives at least). people forget about the Zune new year's eve blowout last year, which wasn't console related but a spectacular MS screwup as well. Stuff happens. I have a 40GB Fat model and didn't happen to turn it on yesterday but was hoping for some Dragon Age this eve so will make sure i turn off my WAP before powering on ol' fatty and disabling the Wi-Fi on there for now.

Arguably the inextricable link between the games and the PSN is not always a good thing.

Also, if Sony can brick a PS3 with a firmware update (I had that happen to me once way back when) hopefully they can fix it with one.

It does seem to temporarily remedy the problem, but is it worth voiding your warranty to get a head start on a inevitable solution just mere hours away?

Even if your warranty expires, Sony has the right to refuse repairing your console if the warranty sticker has been voided.

The PS3 been out since 2006 and this is probably the first major thing to happen to it, while at the same time an average Xbox 360 fanboy is playing on his third of fifth Xbox 360 because they keep burning out on him and as for Wii fanboys the last time that group sat down and play a Wii game from start to finish was probably "Mad World".

And I would remind the 360 friendly press that their beloved console is still suffering from error and burning out issues.

half my themes corrupted, clock set itself to 12/31/99...you cant even manually set it to that date.
dont attempt to play a game with trophies, as it will delete the trophy data. luckily i didnt try more than one game, lol. also, all my downloaded psn games have no owner.

that www.us.playstation.com/dearplaystation thing was pretty weird too huh?
it said something like
"enable flash and/or javascript and stop wasting my time"

Its a programming thing. When invalid dates are passed through application, the application will revert to a default date. In this case the default date is 12/31/1999.

I hope that sony comes out with a backup device that works like Apple's
"Time Machine" that automatically backs up ALL of your data every hour.
I think that would be a nice feature to have.

It appears this glitch only occurs on even numbered years that don't have a leap year, which means Sony has another 4 years before they have to fix the problem....

... or 4 years from now they just let the same thing happen and offer a fix within 24 hours lol.

Ok I do believe that things are back up.

Before I found out about this whole calender thing, I was playing Borderlands online with friends. Got booted off the network, figured there was a problem so I continued to play single-player. After getting off I put in Darksiders (waiting for GoW is killing me), but it wouldn't play. Looked at my trophies and found my trophies for DarkS gone.

Long story short, sycnd the date via the internet and sycnd my trophies and everything is good. Party on.

For those wondering, fat ps3s thought they were on Feb 29, which of course does not exist so they freaked out and stopped working. At 7:00pm EST (aka 20 mins ago) GMT rolled over to 00:00 March 2. Time is calculated based on variance from GMT, so where i live (east coast USA) time is found by GMT -5:00. Now that GMT is March 2nd it can subtract back to Mar 1 instead of the non-existent Feb 29.

As a big shock to all of us, the world did not a'splode without our ps3s on for a few hours.

Bugs can pop up from any number of causes. I've only done a little programming in my life, but there can be several obscure lines of code that dont bother each other until very specific criteria is met, and that might be the case with the fat PS3. It may be the "10" in 2010 that causes a problem with the way the dates add up... There are really too many variables to get into, but im sure theres some line of code hidden deep in there that hates Mar 1 2010, lol.

Well, nothing wrong with my 80gb(4usb) model so with my 160gb I played on those today and nothing happened to them. Only thing I noticed was my 160gb took 5 seconds longer to sign in besides that nothing wrong at all.

That Yahoo article is still up...and they were overreacting like everyone else...Come on guys, this is Sony we are talking about. It took what? Half a day to get this issue resolved? And this was the first major PSN crash ever? Sony provides quality, people. Quit trippin.

I have as much love for Sony as anyone else here but they didn't have anything to do with the issue getting resolved. They just had to wait out the time warp just like the rest of us. Back to gaming people.

Just went back to caressing my sweet fat 60 babe, & her condition is back to 100% stable and fully functioning.

So now that our short trial separation is finally behind us, she's purring right along once again to the rhythm of my fingers as they stroke that sensual controller of hers.

I did have to diddle around with her skeletal structure a bit though, but I only found that she had come down with a couple of irritating, though minor, quirks, resulting symptoms apparently due to that 24 hour bug bite she received I suppose.

All of her major organs, including her trophies, games, & saves were fully functional, and still had an excellent heat-beat.

But a few of her other vitals were slightly elevated.
Her biological clock was off a bit, her EKG was reading 4/1/2010 4:13AM(should have been 3/1/2010, at the time of 8:17PM) but her time's arrhythmia was probably just due to all that prior non-rem sleep now catching up with her over-clocked system.

Also I had to also go & strip her body bare of her old original plain-Jane frumpy-housecoat looking PS3 theme.

Now she looks simply stunning after coaxing her back into her more form-fitted & sexier KZ2 outfit once again.

(So, in my best Honeymooner's voice).....

haven't tried but I also sleep all day so this really didn't make me to upset, it made me more scared if it turned out to be a non fix issue.

I don't blame Sony Sh*t happens I have been a happy launched console customer from the beginning I would be more ticked if they were like another so called company where the failure rate is ridiclous and they try hiding the issue but Sony came right out and said they would get it fixed in a timely manner they could of just ignored and told customers to deal with it and not give us updates or a reasoning behind the issue, so before you start pointing fingers just be thankful you have a Company that cares about their customers and have a reliable console having one issue once in a blue moon I would rather have, having issues all the time where you are constantly taking u'er console in for repairs on a regular basis I defently do not want, so i applaud sony for getting the issue resolved in a timly manner and not dancing around the issue like other companies I won't mention.

i knew there was a reason why i bought a slim.
now only if i could find all my saved data back, i was almost finished on burnout paradise, turok, dmc4, unreal tournament 3, midnight club LA.
so close to reaching the penicle, but so far.
and my bloody external HDD went belly up on me too, actually come to think of it i better do another back up.
