What If Final Fantasy XIII Fails?

Very unsettling, as to your question about what would happen if XIII flops, either in expectation or sales or both, one with a level head would assume that SE would go back to what worked so well and what sold so well (Namely a massive, exploratory world with towns and turn based battle).

However, we are talking about Square Enix here, they have lost whatever made them great in previous generations, I feel that they would only pull even further away from what works and try even more risky things to "advance" the series into the future. In this endeavor, should they choose it, they will inevitable fail and I too will mourn the death of the greatest series of all time.

I don't think that Final Fantasy gets better with each sequel because the game's storylines aren't connected. But in all fairness if it was a continuation of the same story it wouldn't have lasted this long. I haven't played FF XIII yet it might be awesome, but if it doesn't do to me what the 1st cgi cutscene overlooking the Midgar reactor did it will fail to me, if there's nothing in it to rival the excitement of my first summon it will fail to me. This game's greatness will be measured in the two ways all other games are: Sales (Modern Warfare 2) and/or the Player Enjoyment Factor (MGS4 was one of my fave's) This game will sell amazingly because it says FF on it, but will the story become one of our favorites ever? That's the real value of a game how much joy you get from playing it IMO, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Ha, ya been pretty busy with papers and work this past week. I even missed the whole PSN error fiasco. But I'll be damned if I miss a little FFXIII conversation.

Little story I thought I might share. I called Gamestop earlier today to see if they would match the deal Amazon has for their pre-order(I knew Gamestop wouldn't but I enjoy Fuc$ing with them). The employee told me they couldn't but they had their own great deal (ya right). Bring in any used game they're still taking and they will give you an additional %50 for the game towards your purchase of FFXIII. The guy goes on to explain (as if it needs explanation) using various 360 games. I informed him I'd be getting it for PS3 and I was sticking with Amazon. He then finishes the conversation by telling me if I change my mind to stop by with any 360 games I have.

It won't fail financially... It might fail expectations though. However, maybe not... afterall, most of our expectations have diminished after all the recent news. But from a financial point of view... I too huge a fan boy... if they wrote "Final Fantasy" on a napkin, I'd probably buy it. My patience is starting to wear thin, though.....

I, for one, will be waiting to get FFXIII used or off ebay. Therefore, my purchase of it will not count. I know plenty of others that are going to do the same.

I could see it falling short of the sales expectations but I doubt it since the Xboxers will swarm the stores to get their hands on yet another former PS exclusive.

I really, really, really, hope that it doesn't 'flop'. If there's one thing that's going to make SE become just like every other western RPG developer it's that. Not to say Western RPGs are the devil or anything, but coming from a company that has traditionally been one of the best JRPG suppliers in the world i pray that SE doesn't take that turn.

Bots are already claiming that the 360 version is going to sell better then the PS3 version due to this much ado about nothing PSN/Fat PS3 error.

Im certainly expecting Final Fantasy XIII to be worse then i could have imagined but i hope im wrong and it turns out to be a huge surprise. Hopefully some of this negative press will be a blessing in disguise. Lowering my expectations so that when i actually play it i love it. I hope that when i start playing it i go "hmm, wonder what all the fuss was about, this game is just as great as any Final Fantasy."

I hope that it doesnt flop at all,this is a gem of a series. I still cant grasp why they are leaving the heart and soul of this series behind when it had such a cult of followers that would put in huge hours for the sheer enjoyment of playing a master piece.

I don't like Final Fantasy games. There, I said it.

I dislike the turn-based gameplay, the silly animals, and the annoying voices. I hate the convoluted and poorly designed plots. I can't stand the character's CGI noodly hair and their stereotypically anime physiques. I hate how you can barely discern which people are males and which are females.

If I walk into a bar with Kratos, I know we're gonna have a beer and hit on women. If I walk into a bar with Cloud, he's going to have a cocktail and talk about his mother all night.

You know, if you haven't ever finished one of these games - and you haven't, considering you hate them so much - how exactly can you know anything about the plot and whether or not it's "convoluted?"

I've played most every major RPG known to man. I know good writing and good storytelling. While FF always has a few holes, the franchise has ALWAYS represented excellence in video game stories and character development. You may choose to accept that fact or not.

well the only FF I have beaten is 8 and while there are some male characters who look very much like women (laguna) and some weird plot points (nearly every character in the game has "amnesia") it was still a great RPG experience. Though I'm a much bigger fan of the Persona series myself

Ben makes a good point, if all you can follow are the simple FPS plots then I suppose something complex and original might seem convoluted. If you don't like anime art that's fine, lots of people don't but FF fans do (and have little trouble telling the difference between the men and the women, *hint the women have breasts*)

And FF dropped turn based after X-2.

Hey Ben I definitely agree with story telling excellence for FFX (the only one I actually played from start to finish) but not all FF have this.

As far as I'm concerned FFIII on the DS (Almost finished it but don't see much of a point) had barely any story at all. So definitely not all FF have excellent story telling.

I have unfortunately played many games, which in the end, I have not ended up liking that much. I don't see how that would be so hard to believe.

"Convoluted" implies that the plots are UNNECESSARILY complex, coming across as forced and silly, which can certainly apply to a FF story. It's one thing to have a deep, witty, well thought out story that makes sense. It's another to pretend to be clever because you've left gaping holes in the plot.

Seriously, it's as if they're winging it half the time, making things up as they go along.

Honestly though I think it is strange how little people do read nowadays. Especially people in their early twenties or lower. I was recently having a conversation with a younger lady and a few of her friends at the school library because I was reading a book. They wanted to know what class I was reading it for and I said I was just reading it and the reaction was astounding. Blank stares and frightened expressions all around. Turns out they don't read anything not assigned. Then I became frightened.

Most all the articles posted here about FF13 seemed to be scewed ever so slightly in the negitive direction, and even being overshadowed/downtrodden by GOW III. Its something I have noticed. I hope that the review doesent show any bias. That being said I agree with Ben almost 100% of the time in reviews, I think he is spot on. But I will be taking his review of FF XIII with a pinch of salt.

I have never played any FF game before and have 13 on pre-order and look forward to giving it a go because it looks sweet.

I think you should take the review with more than a grain of salt and not question the integrity of a great game journalist and reviewer honestly. If Ben gives it a 6, which I doubt but for the sake of it all, then I will hold that as the deserved score. Just because you think it looks sweet doesn't mean that it will hold water to what a Final Fantasy game should be and since you have no prior FF experience I think that someone who has tons of experience with the franchise has a better perspective than your preconceived notion. Not to be rude or put too fine a point on it.

This is where PS3 lacks: media. Not much good press going for them (not enough IMO). And not much exposure. For example, if I go to gamefaqs.com to look for a guide, and the game happens to be multiplat; I won't see the guide on the PS3 section. More likely than not, its based on the XBOX. Whattup with that???

Honestly I feel as if FFXIII is the drastic departure you are referring to. FFXII was really good as far as graphics, sound, combat and even the weird story about a little queer boy. FFXIII looks to be off it's rocker. I'm certainly in no hurry to get it. Stupid bird in his hair ... *mumble mumble*

It's true, the battle system in XII was a bit jarring at times. More than once I found myself wishing they'd pull the camera back so I could see what was going on. Turn-based used to be so good for that, you know, seeing all the action.

Honestly FF13 could fail this generation but we really can't say till the game is released.

I read an article on how much xbox has to install on their tiny harddives its amazing, 3 disks and 18.3Gigs wow thats amazing, I know ours is much more 38Gigs but at least PS3 have the room, my friend is like wow now i need a new xbox HDD I said why not just purchase a PS3 since a Xbox HDD is overpriced anywase u my as well have a console that is meant for this game and it's 1 disc instead of 3 I think I almost have him sold ;)

I never really played VI but i believe a lot of people do like it. I was just making a point that Square enix will probably make remakes of games that arent what people want. I'm making a comparison that people would rather have a remake of VIII than IX. As for me, i would like a remake of 8. imagine how great the graphics of that would be like the balamb garden and such. Especially since you actually use that to travel the world map.

critical side, well one could argue it already has failed.
it has not been getting glowing reviews, especially for a FF game.
but on the financial side?
IMPOSSIBLE!
if the last few years in this industry has taught me anything its that brand name alone is a stronger selling point than anything else.
developers could turn out crap and it would still sell millions, halo ODST, GTAIV or COD MW2 are 3 perfect examples of that.
EB had a preview games night at the Imax and tickets for that sold out in like 12 minutes!
figures, here i am for the last few years begging for a cinema reveal like this, so they finally do one and it just happens to be for the one game i dont give a sh*t about.

In a way, I hope sales are significantly less than expected.

I hope the sales of the GotY edition (which includes all the dlc) is a massive hit.

This should then send the appropriate message to the developers and publishers.

They lost it....

The FF process was a process where the dev team focused on ONE game, and ONE game only.

With FFXIII, they're also linking it to FFXIII Versus....

They're also releasing it on another console

They're not even focusing on a story. They were probably more focused on making the game for "Americans" more than anything*

They really need to go back to making a game based around a explorable world full of predicaments. And a party of heroes which MAKE sense

Haven't played FFXIII, but I really can't see these characters "making sense," together....I will probably never get over how horribly designed (appearance wise) these characters are

From the "little" we know about Versus, yes, that's all that's hinted at so far.

They'll have to link the world CONCEPT at some point (the problems/conflicts with the Coccoon worlds, etc.)

They say that they have "no singular aim" but what does that really mean. The comment seems to make everyone automatically see the worst case scenario. Have we really gotten so used to a state of minimal change? Besides... they might just have the games play like Kingdom Hearts games (I enjoyed those controls). There can be good that comes of this. We just need to believe in Square-Enix because I don't believe that they have ever "truly" failed us...

I'm sure it won't fail financially but as a Final Fantasy game it already has failed. From what SE has told us it sounds more like a modern action game than an rpg. Its just action battle system, linear story, no towns, no mp.

Yup its not FF, its random action game # 446,234,324.

I don't think it's possible for it to flop. Too many devoted fanboys who will buy it no matter what; too much name recognition, and the graphics are really pretty. And it's the first game of the franchise on this generation of platforms. I'm sure SE has already recouped their development costs and are well into profitability just from the Japan sales alone.

If it were to meet with negative critical and fan response, SE has already demonstrated that they'll just blame it on us stupid Westerners not being able to understand it.

I don't see this making any difference with FFXV - if this game does well, they'll change the next one anyway. If it doesn't do as well as they'd ideally like, they'll just say there's even more reason to change the next one.

it wont fail, being mulitplat will ensure this, it might not live up to expectations, but for sales, am sure it will still get around the 8 million mark, which is pretty fine going if you ask me. (considering it already has sold over 2millions in japan alone)

Based on the pre-order numbers I think it's safe to say that FF XIII will be successful.

It is interesting to see that Battlefield will sell more units on both consoles though.

These are pre-order numbers for the week of February 20th and for the US alone.

It's not a set in stone, but it looks like Battlefield will end up selling more units on both consoles.

Japans sales will probably help swing the overall totals though.

Basically, the US preorders show:

BF2 (360) - 435,916
BF2 (PS3) - 314,047
FF XIII (PS3) - 295,498
FF XIII (360) - 119,090
*via VG Chartz

The pre-orders aren't set in stone, and the numbers ar for the US only. But it's a safe bet to say BF2 will end up selling better in US and EU (probably).

The Japan numbers should help to swing the overall totals though.

how well did ff XII did in comparision with say , FFIX or FFX? in overall sales?

i think thats the last game that had any kind of real exploration, 12 was a huge departure, with even less minigames even though it had the massive monster hunt thing going on, i have to ask , does leaving rpg elements behind has worked for sales in the past and the continuation of the series?

this is the FIRST multiplataform of the franchise, but has a steady decline of the FF sales on the last few games really is enought to warrant the decision for multiplataform?

what do you think?

Interestingly enough, Final Fantasy 13 is number 2 on Walmarts bestseller list while God Of War 3 is number 3. Of course we are talking preorders but that surprised me. Check it out for yourself if you doubt. If Final Fantasy 13 doesn't meet and exceed expectations there will be a LOT of disgruntled gamers out there including myself.
Oh and #1 is Battlefield Bad Company 2 and I KNOW that's just ONE source and doesn't make it a global thing.

Final Fantasy XIII hasn't even been released. Yet, I do feel like the hype regarding its release has fizzled among forum users. It would've been a much bigger deal if it was an exclusive game.
Speaking of exclusive games...could we please get some more information about...

What "WorldEndsWithMe" states is absolutely right on the button!!! After FF VII, SE has been slowly pulling away from True Turned Based, Vast Areas to Explore, Great Story, etc. They sucked in Enix and are ruining them as well. SE Focus is now more Action Oriented, with "some" RPG Elements. In fact, except for graphics, they are no longer distinguishable the any other Action/Adventure game. SAD...

Well the JP version did beautifully(and it is, i have it =]). but if the US/EU version failed, Microsoft would be strung up by SE. Square Enix didn't want it to go on 360 but MS promised that'd it have good sales on 360. thats why you see so much FFXIII-360 advertising.
