SOCOM 4 Announced, Teaser Trailer Debuts On GTTV

Before MAG, Zipper Interactive was a well-respected developer of the critically acclaimed and popular SOCOM franchise. Well, looks like they haven't been sitting on their hands after completing the 256-player MMOFPS.

As revealed over at the PlayStation Blog, Zipper has announced SOCOM 4; the game is currently in development and will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 this fall. They're not quite willing to divulge all the details just yet - i.e., setting, squads, etc. - but they can say that a "militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country." You are part of the Ops Com and your mission will be to command an elite 5-man squad, who must stop this nutjob's insane agenda before he does something rash. You've got only six days and the clock is ticking, so you had best make good use of your time. Yes, this is a single-player campaign but of course, the bread and butter of this series will also return in fine shape- it's the 32-player multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Units forces ever. If you want to get a peek at the gameplay, you'll need to tune in to GameTrailers TV tonight at 12:30 a.m. EST/PST; they'll have a debut trailer for you to feast your eyes upon. Lastly, Zipper wants to let you know that they're not putting MAG behind them; they will continue to support it with updates and more content "for a long, long time" and just because SOCOM 4 is part of their lineup now, that dedication won't change.

So get ready to lace up the boots and move out once more this fall. SOCOM is back!

i agree - it was a let down. but only in the sense that it was another fps. the market seems to be over flooded with them right now. with all the brilliant, original games coming out (heavy rain, mod nations racer, etc) i was hoping for something fresh and new that would make me say (again!) "hell yea! it's great to own a ps3!"

I don't know why they don't just take Confrontation away from Slant 6 and make it better. It's solid now but if Zipper were to add some more materials and fix some server issues it would be even better. That being said, I am looking forward to a new Socom, especially with Zipper at the helm.

A lot of people have started to hate SOCOM thanks to Slant 6, but I'm choosing to believe that Zipper will produce a solid game.

Just read more from that other site who shall remain nameless. (it's in the PS blog link) Colour me excited!
Sounds like Zipper is really doing some nice stuff on this one. It will be interesting to see what they name this one. Since Confrontation was Technically #4. But if Zipper chooses to keep this new one as #4 then it's kind of like an apology for having let slant 6 ruin a good series..lol

Jungle battles, mountain battles, beach battles, giant cityscapes! And though it's a shooter, it's not a FPS it's typical SOCOM TPS with tactics included. Looks like I'm going to need to start a new PSX clan in the forums in a few more months..lol, Who's in?

I've been a long time fan and disliked the Slant Six PS3 version. I had it at launch and have heard they have improved it massively since launch. I was gonna revisit the game until I was gonna get MAG, but with this announcement I'll definitely be waitin on Socom 4. I've heard rumors for the longest now that it was in development buy then they announced MAG, but low n behold it stands true, YES! YES! YES!

I loved the SOCOMs on the PS2. I'm a little weary of this announcement due to the series track record on the PS3, though Zipper back at the helm is good news. They better be making this game from scratch, game engine and all. I don't want to smell any of that Confrontation stench on it.

Zipper is building it from the ground up though I read that they might be sharing some of the server structure for MAG, which is fine by me considering it is quite impressive to have that many ips without much lag. Besides they wouldn't use Slants engine considering they are a different company and if the pictures are in game the character models are different.

What a weak "surprising sequel" hyped up by GTTV and everyone else. I knew Keighley was hyping us all up just to let us down...SOCOM 4? No thanks. Was hoping for some Killzone 3, Resistance 3, or even Motorstorm 3 but instead got SOCOM 4? This isn't surprising or exciting...how lame

I'll definitely be grabbing KZ3 and R3 day one no doubt. This will be the year of PS3 exclusives that blow other exclusive titles away. Uncharted 2 led the pack then, MAG, WKC, Heavy Rain, GoW3, GT5, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Socom 4, Infamous 2, and maybe Twisted Metal PS3! Wheew, my wallet is already feeling the pain from the titles I just caught up on, looks like it'll be another 6-9 months of hurt. Sony is finally bringing the games and pain to MS and Nintendo. I'll be getting Alan Wake on 360, (Gears 3?!) and if I still had a Wii, Metroid: Other M and Mario Galaxy 2 would be my only buys unless a new Zelda makes it this year. Man I need more time and money... defintely more money lol.

Okay, here's my take on this whole mess. When someone says that they're going to reveal a sequel, the first things that pops into people's heads are familiar characters. Here is an example of what has happened: "Nathan Hale?!?! Kick ass" "Gabe Logan maybe? Awesome!!!" "Oh, Nameless Navy Seal guys...........zuh?" I'm sure that the Socom games are good (sorry, never touched 'em) but it's not something that you want to build suspense around with a secret reveal. You do that with games that have characters and a plot. My humble opinion, tis all.

yes i am gonna cry it feels orgasmic i have been waiting for this for the longest i played my heart out with all other socoms but this i cant wait for best online ever omg don't know what to say i can keep going on forever this feels like heaven i have been waiting for this since combined assault the confrontation spin-off was alright but this is zipper they know how to make the socom i do feel kinda bad for slant i wonder what they r gonna do know but who cares about them this is the real deal there is no stopping this is great. the 1 one online tactical modern true shooter is gonna be back thank u sony and zipper this has made my day ima follow this all the way till it comes out i feel happy don't know what to say. i am happy this is game of the year for me . cant wait for all the weapons they will introduce . hey if they bring back vehicles or don't it will still be great socom works great with both vehicles and no vehicles. this is the announcement many have been waiting for i did not expect this at all didn't think this was going to be announce i thought it would be something like resistance 3 which would of been great also but not as thrilling as this has been. wow i do hope they make a collectors edition also that will make it even greater. just want to say thank you to zipper interactive and sony for this great news this game will definitely make me keep coming back for a long time. lol even confrontation makes me keep coming for more imagine what this will do this game is a must buy no matter what if you have never tried a socom game trust me its addictive the skill that is needed for such a game as socom. the community the skill all will coming back I can not wait to redeploy again this fall. i can not wait for the many that dissed socom confrontation to start coming back into the beast that will be socom 4. i cant wait to see how the game turns out. with all the possibilities of the ps3 now compared to two to three years ago I know this will play great since zipper was able to make a good looking alright game with MAG with the 256 which was a really big feat imagine what they will be able to do with jsut 32 players. oh and zipper makes so many maps compared to slant six's sorry as excuse of just a couple of maps. i also hope they remake some of the old maps also. i am glad zipper is back at the helm of this franchise this will be so big that its gonna block out the sun. i am glad it will becoming out this fall. the good part is they did not announce the game 2 to 3 years before because they probably knew the anticipation would kill many. i am glad we only have to wait like seven to ten months. I know many are excites as me but i want to say to the many vets who have played socom with me over the years from socom 1 to socom confrontation and thank you for providing the best online community ever made trust me people if you have not played with the socom community you will see us as the most dedicated and hardcore players on the planet. there are people that are mature there are rarely any immature idiots since socom has the best kicking system on the planet. socom with this new sequel will break new grounds and barriers. I am also glad they are bringing the single player portion back this makes me even happier since they know how to make a great single player experience. I do hope they bring that epic co op from socom combined assault which i still think had the best co op to date. that team of four experienced players versus a hardcore AI was so fun in combined assault. i am so happy owning my ps3 now with this coming this game will justify a purchase trust me you will not regret it zipper knows how to do the know how in video game development with the most balanced game developers in the planet they know how to make maps and guns balance. I just want to say one last thing buy this game when this comes out. SOCOM for ever . see you all on the battlefield.

I guess we can at least be thankful that there are periods in there somewhere.

And we don't like capital letters unless the whole word is capitalized...but only sometimes...

If this was an award show the music would have started long ago, we would be in a commercial break, and you would have been taken off the stage by security to the middle of the desert and shot.

Remember the enter/return key on your computer. ;)

I don't think there's much Socom hate, just that some of us were expecting something else.
Good for the Socom fans though, also another great addition to Sony's already impressive lineup.

"cant believe how much socom hates coming out of you people."

Once again Mr No Name, your nonuse of anything to do with actual english makes a typical sentence sound like filth. I would say socom would hate coming out of people. Let me fix that for you.

"can't believe how much Socom hate 'is' coming out of you people"

There now, isn't that better. It is called the english language. Learn it, live it, love it.

jesus christ when did the internet turn into a home for english teachers?
obviously the kids arent keeping you busy enough.
ive always said teachers have the dream life, big pay checks, 10 weeks holidays per year, getting paid to sit on your a$$ and talk.
dont get much easier than that.

Big pay checks? Teaching is one of the lowest paid professions on the planet.

I'm trying to figure out why Zipper would even bother with MAG. If they were planning on releasing SOCOM 4 in the same year, why not just give SOCOM the 256-player online multi? I can't see it being a really good idea for both titles to come out in the same year. SOCOM is more established so there's an excellent chance that MAG will lose a lot of its players to this. I hope they know what they're doing.

exactly what i was wondering.
i think they wanted to go down a different story route, it would be hard incorporating the shadow war into socom.
i really hope its not NPCs though like its sounding like, im hoping for another navy seals game.

Was hoping for some un-announced game that I wasn't expecting.

I am excited for SOCOM 4, but I would have liked to see something new, or some type of now exclusive game.
